Joy to the World. Children’s faces lighting up with joy. Expressions and wishes of joy. They’re all prevalent during the holidays.
But when we say “joy,” what are we really talking about?
To Dr. Joti Samra, part of joy is feeling happy, but joy is broader than happiness.
The Simon Fraser University adjunct professor of psychology explained that joy is a more lasting state, a sense of inward peace and contentment, the sort of calm that exists even during negative events such as being stuck in terrible Friday afternoon traffic.
Happiness, on the other hand, is more fleeting and more tied to external forces, Samra said.
“Buying a new pair of shoes
may bring a short-term sense of happiness, it’s not going to be joy in the same way.”
Kids experience joy all the time, without knowing it.
“Children are often in a state of joy and it’s because they’re present, they’re living in the moment, they’re not focused on their worry about the future
or concerns about the past,” she said.
“They’re enjoying their moment now.”
And during the holidays, when stress abounds, Samra said she encourages her patients to think about
what they value in their lives and how they can foster that.
“Because the $50 gift is going to bring a temporary state of something, whereas if you can step back and think about what is the spirit really about, it’s about our experiences with people we care about. That’s what sticks with us,” she said.
“Those memories are what bring more lasting joy and contentment in our life.”
Meanwhile, marketers have long recognized the power of the word “joy” in its efforts over the holidays.
Lindsay Meredith, marketing professor at SFU, said some words have connotations and “attitudinal hooks” that are very deep.
“What you’re doing is you’re looking for those key trigger words that are going to evoke the attitudinal response you’re looking for,” Meredith said, noting advertising campaigns are often put together with much thought and market research.
Joy is a word that makes people think of Christmas, which has spiritual connotations.
“It’s one of those words that’s probably farther away from, if you will, the crass commercialization of
Christmas. It’s one that does double duty,” he said.
The word’s evocation of the spiritual side of the season “gives it a certain protection from the commercial side” but at the same time, it can be used very effectively by marketers promoting the joy on kids’ faces while receiving presents and the joy of giving.
However, the effectiveness of the word is really only at this time of year.
“It’s part of its power. If it is an iconic image hooked to a particular issue, the birth of Christ, that means it holds a very special, very, very targeted position, if you will. To that degree, it only makes the word truly useful and applicable in the context of Christmas,” Meredith said.
“You’re not going to see this [word] flogged heavily in August.”

My first grandchild Oliver brings me absolute joy. To see his face light up upon seeing someone special to him, or to watch him discover this world that we live in is very special. Every little ordinary thing fascinates him, and I get to see the world through his eyes. Last Christmas was his first Christmas, so he was too young to enjoy all the festivities, but I am looking forward to this year as our family celebrates Christmas together. It will be joyful!
—Diana Mumfordformer school trustee
I know it’s a cliché, but seeing Christmas through my children’s eyes brings me joy. Watching them light up is truly amazing. That for me is the true meaning of Christmas.
—Rob Lamoureux, presidentBurnaby Firefighters IAFF Local 323
What brings me JOY at this special time of year (and all year round) are the little things or, more specifically, the little ones: children! Their desire to ‘give’ rather than take is heartwarming and contagious. I’m always blown away by the selfless and creative ways Burnaby students band together to support those who are less fortunate in our community—and abroad—with charitable, youth-led initiatives. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Peter Julian won’t be trading long flights to Ottawa for ferry rides to Victoria.
The member of Parliament for Burnaby-New Westminster announced Thursday he won’t be running for the leadership of the BC NDP.
The top job in the provincial opposition was vacated when Adrian Dix announced in September that he’ll be stepping down after he was unable to turn his party’s apparent advantage in public opinion polls into a victory in last May’s election.
Julian said he consulted with federal and provincial colleagues as well as his constituents before reaching a decision with his wife on Tuesday night.
It wasn’t easy, he said, as the feedback he got was equally divided about whether or not he should put his name forward as a candidate. Ultimately it came down to where he can have the most impact fighting to improve the lot of working families, he said.
“The reality is we all want to go where we can provide the greater good,” said Julian.
When asked whether he’d be
throwing his support behind any of the candidates who have expressed interest in the leadership job but haven’t yet announced their intentions, Julian said he’s leaving that door open.
“I think there’s going to be a vibrant BC NDP leadership campaign with lots of exciting candidates,” said Julian, who was first elected as an MP in 2004.
“It’s going to be an exciting time for renewal for the BC NDP.”
The party will choose its new leader at a convention in May.

Some people say the magic ends when you come to learn the dark truth about Santa Claus and realize there isn’t some beneficent old man manufacturing toys in the polar cap’s winter darkness.
It can be disappointing to later flip over your Santa-delivered toy and realize it was stamped out in China at 10 cents a unit and marked up by 1,000 per cent at the mall where mom and dad bought it.
Speaking of malls, you might feel the fool for having told all those Santas with the clip-on beards and pregnancy pillows your materialistic wishes in the belief you were getting an exclusive with the big man.
And then there was the waiting and wondering on Christmas night, when you
strained to hear the sleigh bells or pitter-patter of rooftop ungulates patiently waiting for the next delivery.
You’d wake up in the morning after having failed to catch him in the act and your stocking would be stuffed full of surprises! And when you’re at an age when the number 100 may as well be 100 million, you’re not skeptical he was able to circumnavigate the globe, passing through 24 time zones, and 200 nations in that time.
Does Santa visit the Republic
of Vanuatu, too? I’m sure that he does, sweetie. Now open your presents.
Yes, the magic of Santa might be gone now that you’re all grown up, but that doesn’t mean the magic of Christmas has to disappear.
For me, the most magical part of Christmas begins late on the eve of Dec. 24. The mad commercial rush is over and every last-minute shopper has gone home with either their hasty present or their guilty shame.
A quiet descends over the neighbourhood, over the town, over the entire country. The streets are empty. Families are together.
The magical part is that everybody stops the madness and insanity that is everyday
life for a good 24 hours and, like air escaping a balloon, decompresses, relaxes, and simply enjoys the moment.
There is a peaceful hue that surrounds us and for a brief time we forget about work, we forget about the news, we forget about the banality of sports, and we remember why we’re really here.
We remember, beyond the great social construct that is our post-industrial 21st Century iCivilization, that what truly matters hasn’t changed since the dawn of intelligent life on Earth: Family, love, and friendship.
Adrian MacNair is a reporter
for the South Delta Leader.
Uncommon Sense: The magic of Christmas
’Twas the week before Christmas and the bars, they were hopping
hoping to catch patrons who’d finished their shopping.
When all of a sudden, what should appear
but B.C. liquor law changes for much cheaper beer.
Old Mrs. Claus — or Premier Christy Clark —
said “Happy hours for all, kids in pubs — what a lark!”
The chorus was merry, “Common sense!” went the cheer,
let’s have another round of that much cheaper beer.
And the tots on the bar stools, their eyes all aglow,
were sipping their milk with parents in tow.
“A small whiskey chaser with my brew,” Dad did sing,
while dear, gentle Mom shouted, “Singapore Sling.”
Then as soon as the clock sounded the chime,
the kids and their parents knew it was time.
They hopped in the Caravan while slipping a fiver
into the hands of their designated driver.
Then we heard the brood exclaim as they drove out of sight,
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

COMMENTRe: Mayor gave Robert Burnaby short shrift (Letters, NewsLeader, Dec. 11)
Robert Burnaby was an assistant to Colonel Moody in 1858, given the responsibility for mapping part of the Lower Mainland area. As a reward, Moody named a lake after him. (Moody also named Lulu Island after a 16-year-old travelling showgirl, Lulu Sweet. Her gravesite is unknown.)
Robert Burnaby had nothing to do with our city, aside from the lake being named after him. He didn’t settle here and he didn’t make any contribution to our history.
Shortly after his stint as a bureaucrat in Victoria, he returned to England.
In 1892, Burnaby was incorporated as a District Municipality and the founding citizens decided to name our city after the most significant local feature, Burnaby Lake. It was not named after Robert Burnaby, because nobody knew him, knew who he was or had any logical reason to name the municipality after him.
History is about truth and I simply stated the truth as
garnered from years of reading about Burnaby and talking to our citizens.
Mr. Stratichuk may not like the facts, but he has to accept them. By the way, Robert Burnaby’s letters during his five-year posting in B.C. do nothing to establish any greater connection with our community or our local history. Mr. Stratichuk is wrong about that too.
Our city efforts and expenditures on preserving our history and heritage are among the best in the country. If Mr. Stratichuk is interested, there are many opportunities, online or through our archives, for him to learn about the history of Burnaby and the importance of truth and accuracy in telling our story.
Mayor Derek CorriganBurnaby
TAKING OWNERSHIP“Is it my job to feed my
neighbour’s child? I don’t think so.”
That was the gist of the headline-grabbing response by federal Industry Minister James Moore to B.C.’s record on child
poverty. His comments claiming that child poverty was a provincial matter—not a federal one —triggered a backlash and he apologized.
Juxtapose the minister’s jurisdictional argument against helping the 1 in 7 Canadian children estimated to be living in poverty with the actions of students in the Burnaby School District.
In the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, Burnaby students thought globally and acted locally, banding together in a grassroots show of support to raise $44,000 for the people of the Philippines. The student-driven campaign was an example of shared leadership and social responsibility at its finest. And although Canadian compassion has always been too big to be confined by our borders, as the old adage goes, charity does indeed begin at home.
Efforts like this leave little doubt as to whose “job” it is to care for the young, hungry and vulnerable in our own backyard: everyone’s.

A Burnaby couple has been charged in connection with a fraud investigation, say North Vancouver RCMP.
The detachment’s economic crime unit began investigating in November 2009 after being contacted by the owners of a North Vancouver business, Unique Real Estate Accommodations Inc.
The owners of the real estate rental and property management company alleged that the previous financial controller had misappropriated a large sum of money. North Van RCMP focused their investigation on the former controller, who had worked at the company from May 2007 to November 2009, and his wife, who had also worked there as an
accounting assistant during the same period.
The lengthy police investigation determined the total loss to the company is about $360,000.
On Dec. 17, the suspects were arrested without incident in Burnaby.
Arthur Wong, 50, is charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000, while Jessie Wong, 44, is charged with theft over $5,000. Both are Burnaby residents.
The suspects were released from custody on $50,000 bail, and ordered to surrender their passports, have no contact with the employees of the company, and not be employed in a job that requires them to handle any money, in any form, that is not their own.

Thinking of someone I love brings me joy, and I assume that is what Christmas joy is about when people are thinking of Jesus the Christ, who brought peace to the world, and encouraged people to prefer love instead of fear for the sake of peace.
—John Schwermer
Being able to give and see the happiness that it brings to people. Friendship and honesty, generosity and will to help, happy children and loving parents, and peace in the world.
—Anna Terrana
To me joy is the rush of seeing salmon returning to spawn in our local urban creeks. It’s the excitement of patrolling Byrne Creek in the cool, fresh air, amidst the blazing leaves, hoping to see salmon, and the immense reward when you find a few. Joy is the awestruck face of a child who sees a huge, colourful salmon in the creek for the first time, along with the realization that it’s nearly in their back yard.
—Paul CipywnykByrne Creek
Streamkeepers Society
Joy comes from marvelling at the beauty, complexity and vastness of nature, and realizing there is more than our short stay on earth. Joy comes from being pain-free after a period of ill health. From doing a good job, and from doing things that make the world a better place, and from being kind to people. Joy comes from teaching someone and being there to witness the moment that they “get it.” Joy comes from laughing and making others laugh. Joy comes from getting through a difficult year and finding strength and resilience that I didn’t know I had.
—Cathy Morton
During this hectic period of our lives when the kids are very small and there is always something to take care of, and often somewhere to rush to, it can be stressful trying to balance everything. Therefore, something I’m more conscious of that makes me happy is when my husband, my young kids, and I all sleep soundly, wake up happy, and our family is not feeling hurried or stressed. That’s the equivalent of winning a Mommy Lottery.
—Isabel KolicBurnaby Heights

Growing up, we celebrated Christmas on Dec. 24. After supper my father would sneak into the living room, turn off all the lights except those on the Christmas tree, and ring a little bell to let us know Santa had come. The door would open and there was the tree, and all our presents perfectly wrapped. And my father with an ear-to-ear grin watching as we absorbed the magic of the moment. Now on Christmas Eve I dim all the lights and ring that little bell, and stand with an ear-to-ear grin as my heart fills with joy as I watch my two daughters experience that perfect moment.
—Peter Cech
What brings me “Joy?”In my experience, “Joy” is not
brought, it is found. And after I wrote that last
sentence, I paused and looked out my window waiting the next few words to come and wow—what an amazing sunset! The clouds are shades of gold and the sky that amazing blue, “sky-blue pink” my youngest brother used to call it. And I felt “Joy.”
Joy is there in the small things of everyday life. Joy seems to come unexpectedly and yet it is there all the time. Waiting for me to notice. For me to be open...

It brings me joy to gather with family and friends during the holiday season but also throughout the year. With such a busy work and volunteer schedule, I appreciate taking time for a rest in the security and comfort of home but to also share this home with others. I feel joy when my husband and I invite and host international students and when we invite neighbours and friends to share family meals.
—Antonia BeckBurnaby

Christmas gives me joy to have my family with us for the holidays. Over the past 10 years our three children have been attending university in eastern Canada and it has always been challenging getting everyone together.
The uncertain weather, airline schedules, exam times and lots of trips to and from the airport created a high degree of stress that only dissipated once everyone was safely at home.
Christmas is a time for family and I have lots of very joyful memories of our annual Christmas homecomings.

Man died following September incident in North BurnabyWanda [email protected]
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIOBC) has cleared Burnaby RCMP officers involved in a case where a 27-year-old man died while in police custody in September.
Toxicology results found the man had potentially toxic levels of ecstasy and methamphetamines in his system when he died.
The case started with an incident just before 6 a.m. on Sept. 18 in the 4200-block of Cambridge Street in North Burnaby.
Residents of a home called 911 saying an unidentified male was breaking into their house, punching a window and slamming his head against the house in the process, said a report by the IIOBC. One of the residents said he had “maced” the suspect who then walked away down the street, followed by residents of the house.
When Burnaby
RCMP officers arrived, they found the suspect, who was bleeding heavily, identified him as someone they had dealt with before, and called for an ambulance.
The first officers on the scene put the suspect into the back seat of the police car without handcuffs.
When two other officers arrived about 10 minutes later, they told IIOBC, the initial officers were interviewing the residents of the house at the curb to determine what happened. The witness officers checked on the condition of the suspect and found him unresponsive.
The officers called for a more urgent response from paramedics, removed the man from the car and began performing chest compressions on him before the ambulance arrived and its crews took over.
He was taken to hospital where he died the next day. The IIOBC did not release his name due to privacy concerns.
While the final autopsy report is not yet complete, preliminary autopsy results say the
immediate cause of death was an anoxic brain injury resulting from a lack of blood
and oxygen to the brain, the IIOBC report said.
There was no
evidence of trauma, apart from multiple lacerations on both the man’s hands, and no
evidence of relevant internal or external injuries.
Toxicology results revealed ecstasy and methamphetamines in his blood at levels “where toxic effects have been reported.”
“There is no reason to believe that any of the involved officers acted in an unreasonable or inappropriate fashion or that any police action was the cause of the affected person’s
medical distress or subsequent death,” the IIOBC concluded.
While the first two responding declined to provide voluntary statements, the IIOBC’s investigation included interviews with two witnessing officers, civilian witnesses, records of the original 911 call, medical records, police radio communications and video from a neighbourhood security camera.
