We Are Rovers
Good afternoon and welcome to Burroughs Park for today’s Emirates FA Cup match between Great Wakering Rovers and Heybridge Swifts.
Both teams come in to todays game of the back of a defeat.
The two teams have not meet in this comeption before and Rovers havent had a run for the last few season but they are hoping this season will be different.
Welcome To Burroughs Park
Hope you Enjoy the game. Dan Ellis Club Secretary
THE ONLY problem with pre-season predictions in print is people remember them. Sometimes they even cut them out and keep them. Some get stuck on a dressing room wall and used to create motivation or a siege mentality.
Of course, a correct pre-season prediction is worth its weight in gold. If you’ve delivered your tips in late July or early August and they come off by the end of April or May, then you can take your lap of honour.
It’s part of the new season fun. Who has signed well? Who looks to have strong foundations from last season? Who might drop off?
This season that has been harder than ever. The majority of Steps 3-6 didn’t kick a ball from November onwards last season, Step 2 stopped early, with just the National League’s top flight completing a full campaign.
So it’s difficult to quite know how teams will come back. How players will return after missing so much competitive football. But, even when a full season has been completed, predictions are just that. Guess work!
Because if we knew what would happen, then there wouldn’t be much point in all turning up every Saturday.
The opening weeks are always fascinating. Most teams fancy their chances of having a special year, believing they can be the ones fighting it out even when no one else thinks they will be.
Just ask Sutton United. Not many expected Matt Gray’s side to be in the title race. Outsiders for a play-off place? Sure. But not leading everyone else and lifting the championship.
Yet, last week they were at Cardiff City in the EFL Cup as they embark on their first ever season in League football. It’s quite a story.
And this season will throw up many more. Every league has its fancied sides, the big spenders who ‘should’ be in the mix. But every league will have some who come from nowhere, where everything falls into place and it they really do have the season of their lives.
Like Hornchurch last season celebrating FA Trophy glory under the arch. There can’t have been anyone in the country who foresaw that happening.
This weekend the Step 1 clubs are getting underway to make it a full Non-League house.
The FA Cup is in full swing, crowds are up, goals are flying in. It feels almost normal again.
There may be some bumps in the road this season, Covid hasn’t gone away and a glance across the fixture list shows the pandemic is still having an impact on postponements.
But, after a long absence, it feels good to be inching back towards that routine. And the normality of all my predictions falling flat on their face by the end of September! Enjoy your game…

The club was established in 1880 as Heybridge Football Club. After joining the Mid-Essex League they won Division One in 1908–09 and again in 1911–12. The club subsequently became members of the Essex & Suffolk Border League and were runners-up in Division Two (West) in 1919–20. The club won the division the following season, before finishing as runners-up again in 1921–22 and 1924–25. They later moved up to Division One and were runners-up in 1928–29. The club went on to win the division in 1930–31, earning promotion to the Senior Division. The following season saw them finish as runners-up in the Senior Division, as well as winning the Essex Junior Cup.
After World War II Heybridge returned to the Mid-Essex League, winning the league and the Division One League Cup in 1946–47. In 1949–50 the club joined the Premier Division of the South Essex League, but left after a single season. They returned to the Mid-Essex League and were champions of Division One (now the league’s second division after the creation of the Premier Division in 1949) in 1955–56, as well as winning the Division One League Cup. The club later rejoined the Essex & Suffolk Border League and were runners-up in the Premier Division in 1965–66. After finishing as runners-up again in 1969–70 they were founder members of the Essex Senior League in 1971. They finished bottom of the league in 1973–74, but were runners-up in 1980–81 and then won three consecutive league titles between 1981–82 and 1983–84. Following their third title the club moved up to Division Two North of the Isthmian League.
Heybridge were Division Two North champions in 1989–90, earning promotion to Division One. In 1994–95 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 1–0 to Gillingham in a home match that was moved to Layer Road in Colchester. In 1995–96 they finished the season as Division One runners-up and were promoted to the Premier Division. The club reached the first round of the FA Cup again in 1997–98, losing 3–0 at Bournemouth. Another first round appearance in 2002–03 ended in a 7–0 defeat to Bristol City. A sixteenth-place finish in 2003–04 saw Heybridge play-off with St Albans City for a place in the new Conference South, but they lost 4–3. The club were Premier Division runners-up in 2005–06, qualifying for the promotion play-offs, in which they lost on penalties to Hampton & Richmond Borough in the semi-finals following a 1–1 draw.
A Brief History
Heybridge remained in the Premier Division until the end of the 2008–09 season, when they were relegated to Division One North. A third-place finish in 2013–14 saw them qualify for the play-offs, but they went on to lose 3–0 to Harlow Town in the semi-finals. In the 2017–18 season the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the fourth time, losing 3–1 at Exeter City; winger Sam Bantick scored Heybridge’s first goal in the proper rounds of the competition. They also finished fifth in the renamed North Division, reaching the play-offs. However, the club were beaten 2–0 by Haringey Borough in the semi-finals. The following season saw the club finish fifth in the North Division, again qualifying for the play-offs. Despite defeating Aveley 2–0 in the semi-finals and then beating local rivals Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final, the club were denied promotion as only the five eighth-tier play-off winners with the best points-per-game record were promoted, with Heybridge ranked sixth.
HISTORY: Founded as Heybridge FC in November 1880. Played as Maldon & Heybridge FC from August 1935 until 1939. Reformed as Heybridge Swifts FC since 1945.

Born On This Day In Sport
After being the top scorer in the third and second tiers of Polish football with Znicz Pruszków, Lewandowski moved to top-flight Lech Poznań, helping the team win the 2009–10 Ekstraklasa. In 2010, he transferred to Borussia Dortmund, where he won honours including two consecutive Bundesliga titles and the league’s top goalscorer award. In 2013, he also featured with Dortmund in the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final. Prior to the start of the 2014–15 season, Lewandowski agreed to join Dortmund’s domestic rivals, Bayern Munich, on a free transfer. In Munich, he has won the Bundesliga title in each of his first seven seasons. Lewandowski was integral in Bayern’s UEFA Champions League win in 2019–20 as part of a treble. He is one of only two players, alongside Johan Cruyff, to achieve the European treble, while being the top scorer in all three competitions.
A full international for Poland since 2008, Lewandowski has earned over 120 caps and was a member of their team at UEFA Euro 2012, Euro 2016, the 2018 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2020. With 69 international goals, Lewandowski is the all-time top scorer for Poland. He won IFFHS World’s Best International Goal Scorer Award in 2015 and IFFHS World’s Best Top Goal Scorer Award in 2020. He also won the European Golden Shoe for the 2020–21 season. Moreover, Lewandowski has been named the Polish Player of the Year a record nine times.
In 2020, Lewandowski won the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award and the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award. He has been named to the UEFA Team of the Year twice and the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season four times, and is the third-highest goalscorer in the history of the competition. Lewandowski has been named the VDV Bundesliga Player of the Season a record five times. He has scored over 270 goals in the Bundesliga (second-highest goalscorer of all time in Bundesliga history, behind only Gerd Müller’s 365 Bundesliga goals), having reached the century mark quicker than any other foreign player, and is the league’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer. Moreover, he has won the Bundesliga Top Scorer Award in six seasons, most prominently in the 2020–21 Bundesliga where he scored 41 goals in a single campaign, breaking Gerd Müller’s previous Bundesliga record of 40 goals, set in 1971–72.
Robert Lewandowski (born 21 August 1988) is a Polish professional footballer who plays as a striker for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and is the captain of the Poland national team. Recognized for his positioning, technique and finishing, Lewandowski is considered one of the best strikers of all time, as well as one of the most successful players in Bundesliga history. He has scored over 500 senior career goals for club and country.
