Wireless ConnectivityD-Link unified solutions bring robust, stable and secure wireless access to businesses. The latest generation of Wireless AC and N access points offers seamless connectivity, self-healing mechanisms, traffic segmentation and centralised management to achieve a wireless environment as productive and secure as a wired network.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)D-Link’s unparalleled range of PoE switches are designed with functionality and robustness in mind. From unmanaged, plug-and-play solutions, to PoE modules in high-end chassis switches, D-Link offers features like Time-Based PoE to centrally cut off the power when not in use, and the new 802.3at PoE+ standard, to provide extra power to the next generation of network appliances.

Video SurveillanceTraditionally, CCTV cameras, video recorders and sensors have been a separate part of a business’ subsystem. IP technology applied to surveillance brings flexibility, unified management and comprehensive image recording and indexing to modern networks. With a complete range of IP cameras and Network Video Recorders (NVRs), D-Link can offer the solution that best matches your business needs.

Aggregation NetworkAggregation Networks distribute traffic from an Access Network across the business. Routing, filtering, WAN access processes, and access to resources like network storage, all therefore take place at this level. D-Link offers flexible and robust solutions with Layer 2+ and Layer 3 managed switches, ready for the next generation of IP networks.

Core NetworkThe Core is the backbone of any big business network, and is therefore the most critical ‘component’. High availability, resilience and fault isolation are important factors if you are to avoid critical disruptions. D-Link has the technology to ensure that the core processes run smoothly and meet your business needs.

IPv6-ReadyAs the range of IPv4 addresses has been depleted, IPv6 is being deployed in an increasing number of organisations such as Internet Service Providers (ISP) and international data carriers. Therefore businesses need to build the migration from IPv4 to IPv6 into their Network strategies to ensure that they are able to benefit from the advanced services that only IPv6 can offer. Most D-Link aggregation switches are certified ‘IPv6 Ready’ and are capable of being integrated into current and future networks, protecting both your investment and IT budget.

Bandwidth Management & Traffic Filtering and AnalysisWith the surge of data, voice and video traffic, the business network is under increasing pressure, so IT administrators need to ensure that traffic is prioritised and network resources are utilised properly. D-Link offers the tools to optimise your network and avoid disruptions and bottlenecks, such as bandwidth management to a high level of granularity. D-Link has SafeGuard Engine technology too, which protects the switch from unexpected traffic peaks or virus outbreaks, and sFlow compatibility to analyse network sessions in great detail.

Network StorageAs business data grows and new technologies like virtualisation become more widely implemented, effective reliable storage is of primary concern. D-Link’s range of Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices ensure that all your important data is easily accessible yet protected from unauthorised access. RAIDtechnology protects your content from disk failures and additional services such as FTP and File Server provide secure access to your data from the Internet. For businesses with more complex storage needs, D-Link’s Unified Storage Appliances provide advanced features like consolidation, volume snapshots and virtualisation, with a range of devices that are certified ‘VMware Ready’.

10 GigabitWith an increase in network traffic, Gigabit technology has become a bottleneck at the core portion of the network, which is where 10 Gigabit switches come in. To ensure that the core can provide the services and features needed at the lower levels of the network, 10 Gigabit uplinks can also be deployed on Gigabit switches. D-Link offers 10 Gigabit technology in both switches and copper/fibre modules in a wide variety of Layer 2+ and Layer 3 devices.

xStacking TechnologyD-Link’s stacking technology provides resilience and high availability in the form of high-speed, dual-ring stacking solutions that can work around a hardware fault in milliseconds. Faulty hardware can be hot-swapped and replaced without impacting the rest of the network, minimising downtime and ensuring that critical processes are not interrupted.

30-SECOND LAYER GUIDE

Network switch technology operates on a ‘layer’ basis to ensure total interoperability. Here’s our quick guide to what the layers mean...

Layer 1The Physical Layer, which governs how the network hardware fits together and its assorted electrical /optical specifications. Responsible for the transmission and reception of raw data streams via physical means.

Layer 2The Data Link Layer, specifies how network traffic is shared and data moved around. It’s here that Ethernet switches mostly operate, forwarding traffic based on the universally implemented MAC address of attached devices. In other words, the formation of the data connection between two or more devices.

Layer 3The Network Layer, at which the IP networking protocol works. It’s here that routing is done, based on the Internet Protocol address information. A Layer 3 switch can, therefore, route traffic between networks.

Layer 4 - 7As you move up the layers more and more information about the data inside the packets and ultimately the applications involved becomes available. It’s at this level that applications like web browsing occur, but that’s beyond this guide.

WHAT'S A MAC ADDRESS?

In networking terms, MAC has nothing to do with the eponymous Apple computer; it stands for Media Access Control and is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications on the physical network segment. Every device (computer, printer, IP Camera etc) has a MAC address so that a switch knows where to direct traffic.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

What is PoE+?

How can PoE be Green?

Power over Ethernet allows a single cable (usually referred to as a CAT5/6 cable) to provide both data connection and electrical power to any PoE-enabled devices such as wireless access points, network cameras or IP phones.

PoE essentially passes electrical power along with data on Ethernet (LAN) cabling to compatible network devices, thereby negating the need for power outlets in proximity to the devices being powered.

With PoE you only need one cable for both power and data so wireless access points and Video Surveillance cameras, for example, can be installed without having to run power to inaccessible places such as ceilings or roof spaces. You can also protect such devices from outages, by adding a central Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), and both monitor and manage energy consumption centrally – perhaps even switching devices off when they’re not needed. Support for PoE can be added to existing networks but, if you’re serious about it, PoE-enabled switches don’t need additional wiring and are easier to manage. Either way, check for support for industry standards, both on the switches and networking devices you want to power.

What is the PoE Power Budget?

The PoE Power Budget is the maximum amount of power that a switch can provide to all the devices connected to it. If this is exceeded, then devices will not function correctly as they are not receiving adequate power. In order to choose the right switch, the overall power consumption for the network must be calculated. This can be done by adding up the maximum power demand of every device you intend to connect to the switch.

It is essential to consider the current and possible future power requirements of your network; over-specifying the power budget of a switch in the first instance will result in higher initial costs but could save time and money in the long run.

The original IEEE 802.3af-2003 PoE standard provides up to 15.4 W of DC power (minimum 44 V DC and 350 mA) to each device. Only 12.95 W is assured to be available at the powered device as some power is dissipated in the cable. The updated IEEE 802.3at PoE standard, also known as PoE+ or PoE plus, provides up to 25.5 W of power.

PoE+ is beneficial for devices that require more power, such as Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras, thin clients and video phones. It also expands PoE functionality to a wider range, making it possible to power a larger number of edge devices from a single PoE port.

Using D-Link’s integrated time-based PoE functionality, it is possible to automatically shut down ports which also shut down the devices on a predefined schedule, saving power and money, and increasing security.

PoE devices can transmit a Discovery Protocol that informs the PoE Switch of the actual power required by the device. If the power is less than the default (15.4W for PoE or 25.5W for PoE+), the PoE switch acknowledges the request with its available power and modifies the power budget accordingly. If the requesting powered device exceeds the power budget for the switch, the port is either powered down, or the port remains in low-power mode.

Benefits of PoE

Reduced CostsWith PoE, only one cable – a simple CAT5 Ethernet cable is required to be routed to each device instead of two (data and power), so fewer power adapters or outlets are needed. In large organisations this can bring a major cost reduction.

FlexibilityA PoE-enabled appliance can be installed virtually anywhere, without the need for AC outlets. This provides flexibility and scalability in placing all the network equipment (switches, wireless access points, and IP cameras) in the most optimal locations instead of locations only where power is available. This also enables better network designs.

ReliabilityPoE infrastructure enables centralised power management that provides back-up with an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) to the devices and all the distributed PD networking devices; even during power failures this ensures the reliability and availability of powered devices.

Network ControlNetwork administrators can control and monitor devices using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). Devices can be powered down when not in use or if there is unauthorised access, which allows for increased security.

Add to, Move or Change the networkPoE-enabled switches enable network additions, moves and changes to be accomplished faster. They allow the network to be more flexible and accommodating to changing business and network requirements.

Centralised Power ManagementManaging a PoE-enabled switch via a web browser or by SNMP, enables remote networking devices to be easily reset or shut down, saving the time and expense of dispatching a technician.

SecurityShutting down unnecessary PoE network devices when no one is at the office ensures better business security.

Eco-FriendlyAs with security, shutting down unnecessary PoE network devices can also save power and money for a business.

IP Cameras

There are several types of IP cameras – from a basic box camera to an outdoor pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) to a heated dome camera, and each one has a different power requirement. Basic outdoor IP cameras have a power consumption of about 7 watts; however, additional features require additional power, so an outdoor PTZ device with IR night vision will require significantly more power than an indoor static device.

IP Phones

IP phones are commonly connected and powered by PoE. A standard IP phone will consume around 4-7 watts of power whereas one with a backlit, colour screen or even video conferencing capability will use substantially more.

Wireless Access Points

Due to their placements, wireless access points are typically powered using PoE, but different types of Wireless APs have different power requirements. For example, dual-band concurrent APs require more power as they broadcast on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies. The latest Wireless AC technology delivers wireless speeds of up to 1300 Mbps on the 5 GHz band with enhanced coverage so can benefit from PoE+’s additional power.

SFP stands for Small Form-Factor Pluggable, and refers to the transceivers used to connect networking devices such as switches or routers to fibre-optic or copper cable in order to expand a data communications network, often over several kilometres.

Generally speaking they are hot-pluggable, meaning that you do not need to power-off the device when plugging or unplugging the cable, and operate at up to Gigabit Ethernet speeds. For faster connections, Enhanced SFP, known as SFP+, offers rates of up to 10 Gbps.

BACKBONE NETWORKNetworks are typically designed around a high speed core or backbone network to which servers, Internet gateways and other shared devices are attached. Individual users aren’t connected to this directly but through so-called edge switches with high-speed (usually Gigabit Ethernet) uplinks to the backbone.

FIBREFibre optic cabling can be used to propagate network signals at high speed over much longer distances than with ordinary UTP copper connections. Some implementations support signalling over several kilometres to link buildings together, although fibre will always be a lot more expensive to buy and install.

NETWORK LAYERNetwork products are developed according to a 7-layer model to make it easier to produce hardware and software solutions that will work with others from different vendors. Most switches are designed to communicate at Layer 2 (L2) but in order to route and manage traffic more intelligently, switches able to inspect packets at Layer 3 (L3) and above are also available.

POWER OVER ETHERNET (PoE)Technology to enable DC power to be delivered to a network device using spare wires in the UTP network cabling. With current standards PoE (802.3af) can deliver up to 15 watts and PoE+ (802.3at) up to 30 watts.

QUALITY OF SERVICE (QoS)Refers to the ability to guarantee bandwidth and other performance characteristics on a shared network, for example, to make sure general data communications don’t interfere with Voice over IP calls. A variety of protocols are employed - look for 802.1p and 802.11e.

SNMPSimple Network Management Protocol – as standard protocol used to centrally manage switches and other network devices. Requires specialised SNMP management applications and consoles such as D-View (D-Link's SNMP Management Software).

STRUCTURED CABLINGNetwork cabling designed, installed and certified to conform to a common standard. Category 5e (Cat 5e) or Category 6 conformance is required to support high speed Gigabit Ethernet networking.

UPLINKNetwork switches are often deployed using a cascaded model with users connected to switches via 10/100Mbps or Gigabit ports. These switches are, in turn, connected to faster switches at the centre of the network typically using Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports. It’s common therefore to see switches with blocks of user ports plus two or more Gigabit “uplinks”.

UTPUnshielded Twisted Pair cabling is the standard wiring used to build a local area network. It is made up of pairs of coloured wires inside a single flexible PVC sheath. RJ-45 jacks fitted to the end of UTP cables are used to attach devices to the ports on most network switches.

VLANShort for Virtual LAN, VLAN technology allows a switch to logically separate the traffic passing between particular groups of users and networking devices.

xStack Layer 3 GigabitStackable Managed SwitchesDGS-3630 Series

The DGS-3630 Series Layer 3 Stackable Managed Switches are designed for medium to larger sized businesses, large Enterprises, and ISPs. They deliver high performance, flexibility, fault tolerance, and advanced software features for maximum return on investment. With Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 and SFP ports, 10 GbE SFP+ ports, advanced security features, and advanced Quality of Service (QoS), the DGS-3630 Series can act as core, distribution or access layer switches. High port densities, switch stacking, and easy management make the DGS-3630 Series suitable for a variety of applications.

The DGS-3630 Series switches include the Standard Image (SI) software, and for additional func-tionality, they may be upgraded to Enhanced Image (EI) via a separately ordered license upgrade. The Standard Image provides core SMB and SME functionality, such as L2 switching, entry-level routing, L2 multicast, advanced QoS, Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM), and robust security features. The Enhanced Image includes all the features from the Standard Image, and also supports full L3 routing for Enterprise integration, including OSPF, BGP, VRF-Lite and L3 multicast.

This approach allows I.T. managers to deploy a lower cost L2/L2+ solution today, and upgrade to a L3 solution in the future if networking needs change and a full dynamic routing solution is required.

D-View 7 NetworkManagement System

The D-View 7 Network Management System (DV-700) is a comprehensive standards-based management tool designed to centrally manage, in a consistent manner, critical network characteristics such as availability, reliability, resilience and security. Flexible and versatile, D-View 7 uses cutting-edge web technology to provide a comprehensive software toolbox that can be accessed without the need to install separate software.

Flexible ArchitectureD-View 7 is organised into a server-probe architecture, which simplifies data collection across complex networks. Monitoring and configuring multiple devices at remote locations, across the Internet, or using Network Address Translation (NAT) methodology is no longer an issue. With D-View 7, remotely deployed probes will automatically tunnel home, allowing for the management of devices that cannot be directly accessed using standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). When a device is selected for management, D-View 7 probes will relay the command to the devices and then report back its data to the D-View 7 server.

Simplify Network ManagementD-View 7 supports various predefined configuration templates which help users easily manage multiple devices. For complex configurations, D-View 7 also has the ability to deploy Command Line Interface (CLI) scripts across multiple devices simultaneously. This allows D-View 7 to support a wide range of configuration features and virtually any device as long as it supports CLI settings. With a highly customisable scheduling system, D-View 7 allows users to assign tasks to be issued in off-peak hours or any other planned-maintenance time frame. Users thus have peace of mind, knowing that routine maintenance tasks and configurations will be automatically managed and monitored by D-View 7’s event notification system. D-View 7 also supports periodic tasks which can be run daily, weekly, monthly or to some other set schedule.

Manage Third-Party Devices

Enhanced Trap and Syslog Analysis

Network administrators can customise the SOID and related information of virtually any third-party device to let D-View 7 identify and manage them. D-View 7 can then check the health status of those devices, issue CLI commands, and undertake the standard management and monitoring. Combined with the new D-View 7 graphical dashboard, network administrators can get near-real-time feedback on the status of their network.

D-View 7 also functions as a trap and syslog server which can collect all of the trap or syslog data from multiple devices across a network. This gives network administrators a centralised place to collect important data, which can then be searched easily from within D-View 7. The advanced search system lets network administrators set keyword combinations, and generate alarms based on events that are reported in the trap or syslog feature.

SFP/SFP+/XFP Transceivers

Media Converters

D-Link’s Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) and 10 Gigabit Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP+) Transceivers help to achieve long-distance data transmission and high-speed communication with single-mode fiber, multi-mode fiber and copper cables. These modules can be easily installed into compatible switches and media converters; please see the switch and media converter comparison tables for relevant compatibility.

Media converters act as the link point to join copper and fiber connections together, in other words to connect 10/100/1000BASE-T copper to fiber (or vice versa) in order to enable exceedingly rapid network data traffic at enterprise level. They act as a useful conduit when expanding a network, as existing copper-cable-based switches do not have to be replaced but can be expanded upon into a fiber network through the use of a D-Link Media Converter.

D-Link Wireless Solutions for SMBA Connected Workforce is a More Productive Workforce

Why Choose D-Link?

Advantages of D-Link Wireless Solutions

Everyone expects wireless these days. Once a ‘nice to have’ feature, wireless capability is now widespread among businesses of all types and sizes. Mobility has become essential to support flexible working and helping businesses to stay nimble and competitive.

But in many cases wireless networks are failing to deliver as well as they should. Businesses often struggle with patchy reception and sluggish data transfer. Increased use of voice, video and surveillance technologies across networks often stretch wireless bandwidth to the limit and beyond. Many wireless networks remain unprotected against security threats such as rogue access points.

At D-Link we recognise that wireless has to be reliable and secure for business. Our latest generation of wireless products offer seamless connectivity, self-healing mechanisms, traffic segmentation and centralised management to achieve a wireless environment as productive and secure as a wired network. Robust enough to be deployed at the very core of your network, they give greatly enhanced reliability and coverage, and include advanced security features to keep you completely safe from intrusion.

D-Link offers unified wireless networking solutions that enable small and mid-sized businesses to create highly mobile, highly productive work environments at a low total cost of ownership (TCO). With products that provide excellent value across a wide range of scenarios, D-Link wireless networks are scalable, easy to deploy and manage, and deliver reliable, secure connectivity, in a self-healing solution.

D-Link wireless solutions are engineered to open standards, making them easy to integrate into an existing multi-vendor wired or wireless infrastructure, giving you the flexibility to build your network the way you want.

• Breadth of options from stand-alone to cloud managed APs to managed wireless switches to unified wireless end to end solutions give you the flexibility to choose what’s right for you.

• Innovation in architecture and design provides seamless roaming via automatic management of RF frequencies, interference and wireless ‘hole’ repair.

• Ease of installation and management with PoE support, unified management, monitoring and update of all APs and cloud management options.

• Networking expertise that comes from over 25 years of design and manufacturing experience in networking, storage, switching, wireless, IP Surveillance and security.

• D-Link’s Wireless Site Survey is the starting point for a successful wireless LAN upgrade or initial implementation. D-Link’s wireless network expertise results in an accurate survey and documentation of the RF (Radio Frequency) characteristics of your facilities. An interview process is the next step to an equipment specification, placement and configuration plan that optimizes coverage and can handle the wireless, application and security demands of your business, now and in the future.

Why Wireless AC?

Why Wireless AC?

Exclusive Use of the 5 GHz Frequency• With so many devices connected to the 2.4 GHz frequency

band, interference has reached a point where it can cripple your data flow and speed.

• The 5 GHz frequency band is less common and Wireless AC uses the 5 GHz band exclusively for its transmission. With fewer devices connected, you get less interference and faster speeds.

Extensibility• Latest Wireless AC improvements have included standardised

‘Beamforming’ that synchronises antenna signals to/from the wireless access point for better Wi-Fi performance and range.

Wider Channel Bandwidth• Previous wireless standards had bands ranging from 20 MHz

to 40 MHz. But with Wireless AC, the band has increased to 80 MHz, meaning a wider band for your data to pass through at faster speeds.

• It also offers non-overlapping and higher bandwidth for higher performance and increased signal reliability.

Wireless AC is similar to having a lane all to yourself...

Wireless AC is like the same number of vehicles going fast on a six-lane motorway

Existing wireless is like vehicles going slowly on a three-lane motorway

AC SmartBeam™ is D-Link’s optimised beamforming technology, which targets devices with weak reception by sending a focused signal to the device. This ensures that all the devices within the network get optimised wireless connectivity, no matter where they are.

Business WirelessEveryone expects wireless these days.

D-Link Business CloudA complete Cloud-Managed Wireless Networking Solution for SMEs

D-Link Business Cloud offers centralised web-based management of wireless access points. Its intuitive browser-based interface enables rapid deployment without the need of extensive setup or configuration. With Zero-Touch Provisioning, cloud-managed access points automatically connect to the D-Link Business Cloud, enabling self-configuration, meaning they can be deployed at a remote location without an on-site network administrator.

The D-Link Business Cloud offers advanced features through the supported access points, such as Band Steering, Load Balancing, Forced Roaming, Scheduled Wi-Fi and Guest Management. The availability of these advanced management and performance mechanisms in the D-Link Business Cloud Portal means that there is no need for the dedicated hardware and RF expertise typically required to tune a wireless network. The D-Link Business Cloud tunes the cloud-managed Access Points’ channel selection, transmit power, and client connections for optimal performance under the most challenging RF conditions.

With an intuitive, easy to use web portal, administrators have a comprehensive view of one or multiple wireless networks, access to reports, current status and performance, network load and bandwidth consumption down to individual clients.

D-Link Business Cloud allows multi-tenant access to the management portal, giving different permission levels to different types of users. This feature is especially useful to Service Providers, who can assign IT specialists to monitor and manage selected customers’ networks remotely, and at the same time still giving customers access to view their own network status.

Ibis Styles Hotel, BrisbaneA great example of an efficient Enterprise Wireless Access Point Solution provided by D-Link and Fredon

BackgroundOrganisation:

Located at the heart of the Brisbane CBD, the 368 room ibis Styles Brisbane features uninterrupted views of Brisbane River and the South Bank cultural precinct. For total comfort ibis Styles Brisbane provides a range of guest services including 24 hour Reception, meeting spaces with outdoor terrace, Wi-Fi connectivity throughout, SmartTV and media panel in each room.

OverviewD-Link worked with our trusted partners Fredon on this key project to design and install Enterprise Access Points into the new hotel. Fredon is a leading supplier of communications, electrical, data and HVAC services to government, large corporations and the industrial and construction sectors. Fredon relied on D-Link for advice on correct Access Point planning and placement prior to installation. Post installation Fredon relied on D-Link for on-site configuration.

Challenge:

As the ibis Styles Brisbane was a new purpose-built hotel it brought with it all the challenges of a large scale roll-out including meticulous planning and logistics having to integrate seamlessly with technical support and customer training. The speed of deployment was also a key factor.

The SolutionAs a result of the Fredon and D-Link partnership, Access Points were installed on each level of the hotel and a DWC-2000 Wireless Controller was installed into the communications cabinet on the services floor. It was very important to the hotel that all of the equipment installed came from a global brand with an excellent and proven reputation for quality and efficiency.

The OutcomeFredon successfully installed a D-Link solution that covered all of their key requirements. This included being reasonably priced yet comprehensively feature-rich, having a Systems Integrator with local presence, teamed with a reliable vendor, high quality distribution support and service and a speedy delivery of the solution.

Standalone WirelessCentral WiFiManager - CWM-100Central WiFiManager is D-Link’s latest free tool to help network administrators streamline their wireless access point management workflow. Central WiFiManager is an innovative approach to the more traditional hardware-based multiple access point management system and uses a centralised server to both remotely manage and monitor wireless access points on a network. Deployed on a local computer, Central WiFiManager can be easily integrated into existing networks in conjunction with supporting D-Link wireless access points, to help eliminate existing bottlenecks for wireless traffic.

Extendable, Affordable Business Wireless SolutionDesigned from the ground up as a standalone software controller, D-Link’s free Central WiFiManager is flexible, robust, and feature-rich. It comes ready to run with many enhanced enterprise wireless access point features to provide a solid wireless network system for customers who need a centralised management controller. Central WiFiManager can be deployed onto a server running Microsoft Windows1 and can manage up to 1000 APs without any license charges. Central WiFiManager supports a range of D-Link Access Points, as shown in the table on Page 42.

Robust Security and Management ToolsCentral WiFiManager supports multi-site deployment management as well as multi-tenancy management. This allows network administrators to provide different authorities between head and regional offices. Sites can be logically separated with their own configuration, access security, network map, and statistics. For example, a network operations manager could pre-configure APs before dispatching them to regional offices. They can then manage all of the APs on an enterprise intranet, while allowing local administrators to manage only theirs.

D-Link Network Solutions for HealthcareSt Andrew’s Hospital ToowoombaA simple and scalable network solution providing fast and reliable networking services to medical professionals and visiting clients 24/7

D-Link has helped make a very complicated network easy to manage and expand. St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital’s regular expansions always require new networking hardware and thanks to D-Link adding switches and APs has now become a routine and seamless process. — St Andrew's Hospital Toowoomba

BackgroundOrganisation: St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital is a 137-bed, acute care private hospital situated on the northwestern side of Toowoomba. Established in 1966, the hospital is a not-for-profit private hospital and a registered charity. St Andrew’s Toowoomba is a teaching hospital for the University of Queensland and employs approximately 500 staff with over 350 credentialed Visiting Medical Officers and Allied Health Professionals providing services to 24,500 patients annually.

Challenge: St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital required a significant hardware upgrade to maintain their existing networks as well as to ensure efficient and reliable network scalability for their constantly expanding client base and geographical area.

OverviewD-Link hardware was chosen to replace the existing network infrastructure in 2011 and a continuous rolling upgrade has been progressing ever since. St Andrew’s has an excellent working relationship with D-Link whose high level of support means they available to provide the very best, consistent advice and assistance in order to continue developing and maintaining the best infrastructure possible for the hospital’s staff and clients.

The SolutionSt Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital uses a wide range of D-Link products to provide networking services to staff and clients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The critical nature of the workplace requires a fast and reliable wired network. This is handled by a fibre backbone across the hospital site using select D-Link managed switches. More than 25 of these switches are used to provide wired networking across ten acres (40,000 square meters) of hospital grounds. The network also hosts multiple VLANs to provide isolated network access to professional medical tenants and visiting clients.

St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital also utilises multiple D-Link DWS-4026s to manage up to 80 wireless access points, which are predominantly DWL-8600s and DWL-6600s. The wireless controllers ensure operational redundancy as well as enabling simple management for private and guest networks.

The OutcomeD-Link has helped make a very complicated network easy to manage and expand. St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital’s regular expansions always require new networking hardware and thanks to D-Link adding switches and APs has now become a routine and seamless process.

The Next ProjectSt Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital is currently implementing firewall failover with their D-Link DFL-1660s. Additionally, the hospital’s analogue telephony system is being replaced with VOIP, with the majority of wired devices running on POE via managed switches.

D-Link Network Solutions for Education

“The improvement in performance of D-Link products through the generations has been remarkable, with the current DWL-8610AP providing high levels of stability and speed for our AC WiFi-equipped fleet of 900 laptops. We look forward to working with D-Link on upcoming refurbishment projects and I expect they will be more than competitive.” — Lance McKewen, Director of IT, Downlands College Toowoomba

Downlands College ToowoombaComprehensive, cost-effective Network Solution from D-Link, providing remarkable wireless performance

BackgroundOrganisation: Downlands College is an independent Catholic coeducational day and boarding school for students from years 7 to 12, based in Toowoomba, Queensland. Today it accommodates 530 day and 200 boarding students from all parts of Queensland, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and beyond.

Challenge: Downlands College were seeking a wireless solution to cover the entire campus. This was no mean feat as Downlands has a huge campus with many classroom buildings and five boarding houses.

OverviewDownlands’ involvement with D-Link began in 2009 when they were seeking a wireless solution to cover the entire campus. A D-Link engineer conducted a site survey prior to designing the wireless solution and tendering for the business. After consulting other schools in our area Downlands found that the D-Link solution was comprehensive and cost-effective, which meant they could complete the whole project with the funding available, rather than a partial solution with competitive products.

The SolutionSince starting in 2009 with two DWS-3024 controllers and a DWL-3500AP, Downlands have incrementally upgraded through three generations of D-Link wireless products, including DWS-4026 controllers, DWL-8600AP, DWL-6600AP and DWL-8610AP. Downlands commented that, “The improvement in performance of these products through the generations has been remarkable, with the current DWL-8610AP providing high levels of stability and speed for our AC WiFi-equipped fleet of 900 laptops.”

The Downlands wired network, spanning around 30 separate buildings using fibre links, has been replaced entirely with D-Link Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches. Recently the College’s legacy telephone system, with nearly 200 extensions, was replaced with a modern VOIP system and after a few firmware upgrades, the D-Link switches are coping easily with the voice traffic.

The OutcomeThe backward and forward compatibility of the Access Points and controllers has reduced Downlands’ capital expenditure as they have been able to continue using the DWS-4026s they have had for some years. Downlands was also particularly pleased with what they referred to as, “the excellent pre-sales and after-sales support from D-Link and their local resellers, including site visits from D-Link engineers at state and national levels.” Not only have issues been sorted promptly, but the service has increased Downlands’ own knowledge of the “good and bad” of networking and Wi-Fi.

Director of IT, Downlands College Lance McKewen said, “If we had our time again, we would purchase a higher proportion of PoE switches to power the many APs and VOIP phones. The new DGS-1510-28P and the tiny DGS-1210-10P can be installed in tight cabinets and operate almost silently.”

The next project is to replace Downlands’ long-lived and much-loved TMG software UTM firewalls as this product is end of life. Downlands has purchased the small and quiet DFL-860E and also the larger DFL-1660 firewall for heavy Internet traffic. At this early stage the firewalls appear to be easy to configure and provide extensive optional UTM capabilities for a fraction of the price of leading firewall competitors.

D-Link IP Surveillance Solutions for EducationTAFE Queensland Gold CoastTAFE Queensland Gold Coast Improves Security with a Powerful HD Surveillance Solution from D-Link and BLUi Security Australia

“I would recommend BLUi Security Australia and the D-Link HD IP surveillance solution to anyone who is looking for a security partner that will provide a system that is easy to use and delivers clear, usable surveillance footage.” — Jerome Van Gramberg, TAFE Queensland, Gold Coast.

BackgroundTAFE Queensland Gold Coast had a requirement to upgrade their large number of CCTV surveillance cameras on site due to the low quality of the recorded footage.

The ChallengeTAFE Queensland Gold Coast’s Jerome Van Gramberg explained, “The main issue with the existing system was that the clarity of the footage was very poor. Even though there were many cameras on site, it was difficult to positively identify persons that were on our watch list, making it even more difficult for our security team to respond quickly when these individuals approach or enter our premises. The individuals had to get pretty close to a camera for our security team to see them clearly, which is obviously not ideal.”

The solution needed to provide clear video evidence to help onsite security respond faster.

BLUi and D-Link’s Solution: Powerful, Expandable and Dedicated SurveillanceVan Gramberg and his team turned to security specialists BLUi Security Australia. Understanding that image clarity was paramount, BLUi partnered with IP Connectivity experts D-Link. By employing the use of D-Link’s Full HD IP cameras connected to secured sections of the TAFE’s data network, the new solution provided far better surveillance coverage, clearer images and integrated seamlessly with the TAFE’s existing infrastructure.

Van Gramberg continued, “BLUi Security Australia and D-Link installed thirty D-Link DCS-6513 1080p Full HD IP cameras at our Gold Coast campus and the benefits were instant. Through strategic placement and configuration of these cameras, the onsite security team now have far superior video surveillance coverage on site with fewer cameras in use. The quality of the images from the D-Link cameras and the efficiency of the system as a whole is excellent.”

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast’s new system has also been designed to be particularly flexible and easy to use. It integrates:

• Thirty D-Link DCS-6513 HD IP cameras (expandable to sixty four with simple addition of software licensing) and

• A dedicated surveillance server platform provided by BLUi which in turn runs the powerful D-Link D-ViewCam Video Management System (VMS).

Benefits - Better Surveillance Coverage, Clear, Usable Footage and Easy to UseVan Gramberg added, “I’m delighted to say D-Link’s D-ViewCam software system is particularly easy to use and with the new D-Link cameras, image quality has improved markedly over our previous CCTV system. Also reviewing recorded footage after an incident and backing up evidence to USB is much faster than before. We can now also ID persons far more quickly and effectively and from greater distances than we could before.”

Using D-Link cameras and D-ViewCam recording software, has clearly enabled the TAFE’s onsite security team to better manage security and the transition to the new system has been particularly seamless.

D-Link IP Surveillance Solutions for BusinessThe Avenue Apartments, DarwinA scalable HD IP Surveillance Solution providing high level security for The Avenue’s commercial, retail and residential spaces

“By using D-Link cameras and switching we were able to increase both the number of cameras plus the total amount of storage for greater total coverage at The Avenue in a particularly efficient and cost effective way.” — Michael Bailey, Synergy Managed Services.

In Partnership with

BackgroundClient: Osborne Family Holdings (OFH) are the owners of new, high quality apartments called ‘The Avenue’. The Avenue - Stage 1 consists of 150 new apartments built over thirteen levels with mixed commercial and retail use.

Challenge: The Avenue build presented an array of challenges, mostly to do with sharing residential, commercial and retails spaces. Within the mix of spaces there was a requirement for high level security for The Avenue’s government clients and crèche. There was also the building’s street exposure to manage alongside significant car parking security for residents, commercial tenants and retail visitors. Finally provisions had to be made for the expanding environment and the addition of stage 2 of the build, consisting of another 150 apartments over 13 levels with mixed commercial and retail use and stage 3, a further 200 apartments plus 100 hotel rooms again covering commercial and retail.

OverviewThe Osborne Family Holdings specified a requirement for a high definition IP Video Surveillance and Network Switching solution. The range of cameras needed to suit each individual location and be PoE powered, as well as link up with a camera recording and analytics system. The system also had to provide a scalable storage solution and a scalable camera solution for stages two and three. Finally, The Avenue’s owners wanted one brand to offer both Network Switches and an IP Camera solution with a Limited Lifetime Warranty that included Advanced Replacement.

As a result IT reseller Michael Bailey from Synergy Managed Services recommended a D-Link solution that was installed by systems integration specialists Controlability.

The SolutionThrough Synergy Managed Services, an IT reseller that boasts a long and successful relationship with D-Link, D-Link were able to provide a full end-to-end high definition IP Video Surveillance and Network Switching solution.

In addition D-Link could offer the Limited Lifetime Warranty that included Advanced Replacement, two features that no other IP camera brand is offering.

The Outcome“By using D-Link cameras and switching we were able to increase both the number of cameras plus the total amount of storage for greater total coverage at The Avenue in a particularly efficient and cost effective way.” – Michael Bailey, Synergy Managed Services
