    GETTING THErE & AwAYJakartas international airport, Soekarno-Hatta, is located 35 kmrom the CBD and linked via a toll road. I you require transportrom the airport, there is a taxi rank, or or a more comortableride go to the Golden Bird limousine counter in the arrivals oyer.Upon departure, you will need to pay 100,000 Rupiah (US$10.60)departure tax in cash at the airport.

    VISAS

    Citizens o 11 countries, including Hong Kong, Malaysia, thePhilippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, are able to receivea ree tourist visa or a stay o up to 30 days. Citizens o 52 othercountries may obtain a visa or a stay o up to 30 days upon arrivalrom specied ports o entry (including Jakarta InternationalAirport). At the time o writing these include the USA, theEuropean Union, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea andTaiwan.

    I you are collecting a visa upon arrival you will need topresent the appropriate amount in cash (rom US$10; majororeign currencies accepted) at the bureau located shortly beoreImmigration. For a longer visit you should apply prior todeparture.

    GETTING ArOuND JAKArTAIn Jakarta, taxis rom the Blue Bird Group, in particular Silver Birdtaxis, are recommended and can be booked rom most hotels or atthe airport. These are sae, generally clean and have meters.

    I you have a tight program or are going to out-o-the-way

    locations, it is oten a good idea to book a taxi or the ull day. Thecost is less than a standard hire car and driver. These all have metersand you should round up the are by around 10%.

    DOmESTIC FlIGHTSIndonesia is well serviced with domestic fights between the major

    cities. Surabaya has an hourly shuttle service (rom Soekarno-Hatta) and there are requent services to Bandung (rom HalimAirport). Overbooking is a problem, so it is important to reconrmand check in promptly.

    ClImATEIndonesia has a tropical climate, with a wet season rom Decemberto March.

    TImE/BuSINESS HOurSThere are three time zones in Indonesia. Jakarta/Java is seven hoursahead o GMT.Oce hours or businesses are generally 8am to 5pm, Monday toFriday. A lunch hour is typically taken rom 12 to 1pm. Banks andgovernment departments may close at 4pm.Ramadan: It is worth noting that the period o Ramadan is notthe best time o year or doing business in Indonesia. In 2008, thismonth o asting commences on 1 September and in 2009 on 21August.

    lANGuAGEThe Indonesian language is Bahasa Indonesia. Although Englishis airly well spoken in business circles, at least among moresenior executives, you should establish whether you may need an

    interpreter or any business you intend to carry out in Indonesia.

    SAFETYIndonesia is currently subject to travel advisory warnings rommany international governments. Although these oten err onthe side o caution, it is worth checking what advice your owngovernment is issuing at the time you travel.

    Jakarta is a surprisingly riendly city, but you should still exercisecaution i you leave your hotel or oce building, most o whichhave a strong private security presence. You should avoid walkingalone at night.

    HEAlTHYou should drink only bottled water (this is provided in most

    hotel rooms). Although Java and Bali are considered malaria ree,there is malaria in other parts o Indonesia. I travelling to otherareas, ask your doctor whether malaria exists and what medicationis best to bring with you. In any event, travel insurance is highlyrecommended.

    COmmuNICATIONSMobile phone: Mobile phone coverage in Indonesias maineconomic centres is good. I you bring your GSM mobile with youit will work but the roaming charges are likely to be much higherthan i you obtain a local SIM card. Even on a pre-paid basis, call

    rates are modest and you will also gain a local number (althoughpossibly one with more digits than youd wish or!).Internet: Business standard hotels in Jakarta all have in-roombroadband internet service, which tends to work airly well.

    ElECTrICITYIndonesias power supply is 220 volts, 50Hz. Outside Jakarta,however, it is sometimes 110 volts. Plugs vary but are generallytwo-pin, European type. Business standard hotels will typically lendguests an adaptor.

    EATING, DrINKING & SOCIAlISINGBusiness visitors to Jakarta tend to conne themselves to the largerhotels. The ollowing are interesting stand-alone options.
