Upside-Down BY REV. HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE
THE ORIGINS OF OBON ARE somewhat obscure – there are texts
in Chinese, but even the meanings of
some of the terms have various expla-
nations. The one that resonates with
me explains the Indian term ullambana
as “hanging upside down.” Although
this has often been understood as one
of the tortures of hell, instead I have
learned that it refers to our normal view
of the world.
In other words, although we think
we know so much and rarely question
ourselves, in actuality our view is very
often upside-down. This is samsara. The
arrogance of the ego. The allure of the
secular world. The skewed values of a
capitalist society. Without Buddhism,
we go through life without question-
ing these things – our stubbornness
grows and grows, and we spend our
lives chasing after material items hop-
ing that they will bring us happiness.
Obon gets us to face some of the
contradictions of life. How can these
memorials – Hatsubon and Obon – be
considered a Gathering of Joy (Kangi-
e)? Whether we have lost a loved one
this past year or many years ago, in
the midst of our sadness and loss we
hear of the deep joy and gratitude that
the Obon Service and Dance express.

I WANTED TO START OFF THIS month by thanking the entire Sangha
for their dedicated eff orts, with sweat
dripping from everyone’s brow, in
making this year’s BCO Bazaar and
Food Festival another success during
one of the hottest weekends we’ve
experienced this year. I take my hat
off to each and every one of you and
especially for those who took the spe-
cial eff ort to make sure everyone was
staying hydrated. We also extend to
the victims of heatstroke our hope
that their recovery was speedy and
without complications. For Kathy and
me, it took more than a half a week
to recover from the two-day event.
I know many of you felt the same
way. I would like to acknowledge our
appreciation to all of the donors who

AUGUST 20172
WITH THE BAZAAR, THURSDAY, June 1, was our only meeting day for
the month and it turned out to be a
day fi lled with enjoyment as we were
able to host a special surprise guest
on that day. What was to be a lunch
invitation for a few of us, turned out
to be lunch with Scott for us all since
it happened the Momiji group was
meeting that day. I think most of the
members recall Scott Morishita, a
former church member for many,
many years who after college worked
down South for a time and then trans-
ferred to Chicago, Ill, having accepted
a government position. He had been
an employee in Chicago for the last 17
years and now is a young retiree.
Scott was unaware that the Mo-
miji kai group was meeting on that
particular day, but it all turned out
to be the perfect day. After yoga
exercises with Patty Hirota, and
lunch we had asked him to comment
on his trips and he willingly obliged.
Scott has taken an interest in travel-
ling and had just returned from visit-
ing the great country of Greece. The
same group had also taken a cruise
to several islands, with the fi rst tak-
ing about 2 1/2 hours from Athens,
Hydra being the fi rst and the larg-
est of the three islands they visit-
ed. He said the islands were charming
but then they all begin to look alike
after seeing one, which I thought
was interesting. We also talked about
living in Chicago as it seems we hear
about all the problems being faced
by those living in the city but Scott’s
picture of the city is truly beautiful.
I, myself, have not visited the city in
many years, but according to Scott
it is quite beautiful. His description
of the city makes one want to visit
the city again. I know everyone truly
njoyed the impromptu discussions
and felt it was a day well spent.
We hope Scott will visit us
again soon so we can again enjoy
such discussions.
TECHNOBUDDHA CELEBRATED ITS10th Anniversary as the annual con-
ference was held on the weekend of
April 28-30 at the Jodo Shinshu Cen-
ter in Berkeley. Approximately 75
young adult Buddhists from the age
21-39 demographic explored beyond
the simple scope of “good vs. evil”
or “right vs. wrong” dichotomies. As
“The Gray Area” theme for this mile-
stone event suggested, not everything
should be viewed in “black and white.”
Berkeley native, Reverend Mat-
thew Hamasaki (Central California dis-
trict), returned to his hometown as this
year’s keynote speaker. Reverend Matt
acknowledged that it is easy to view
the world in “good and evil” or “right
and wrong” perspectives, and that
our individual egos are the cause of
this “black and white” framework. One
example to illustrate the Gray Area
concept was how evil characters such
as The Wicked Witch of The West (The
Wizard of Oz) and Malefi cent (Sleep-
ing Beauty) have recently had their
stories told, thus making them more
sympathetic. In this world dominated
by Christianity, an individual’s behav-
iors and beliefs are intended to either
earn a reward (get into heaven) or
avoid a punishment (hell); Buddhism’s
view is that our actions are intended to
learn or gain an understanding about
something.
Of the 9 diff erent workshops
off ered, the Taiko & Mind workshop
was my “end on a high note” after the
Escape Game, which followed the Sa-
cred Circle and Ethics & Buddhism
workshops that I chose to visit. I have a
new affi nity for Taiko drumming thanks
largely to the WrestleMania 31 entrance
that featured a Taiko performance
before WCW (World Championship
Wrestling) legend, Sting, emerged
from behind the curtain en route to
the ring for his fi rst ever WWE (World
Wrestling Entertainment) match. The
Taiko & Mind Workshop, led by Cal Rai-
jin Taiko from UC Berkeley, was held
in the underground level of the Jodo
Shinshu Center parking lot; this result-
ed in a pulsating atmosphere. My only
challenge was trying to show a happy
expression on my face as I played the
2 lines of “Matsuri” that we all learned.
It feels only natural to have a serious
look when beating a loud drum, so my
“Kiai!” (non-beat shoutout) was a sim-
ple “Hey!” I cannot remember the last
time I played a Taiko drum, so it was
fun to revisit this hobby.
As one of the Foods co-chairs for
this conference, I want to thank the

Rev Taniguchi Dharma Award: Rev. Zuikei Taniguchi has served as a BCA minister from
1964 and recently retired from the Alameda Buddhist
Temple (after serving 53 years). He served here at BCO
12 years from 1971-1983, and in appreciation for the kind-
ness and support he received, the Taniguchi family created
this fund for use towards a recognition program for the
Dharma School students. Awardees were Andrew Brown
and Martha Castro.
Nakashima-Masuyama Life Enrichment Award:Funds were established in memory of Mr. Kikutaro
Nakashima for use in developing activities for the advance-
ment of Jodo Shinshu teachings, and to support BCO’s
Life Enrichment Program. For outstanding leadership and
participation in BCO’s Dharma School and Jr. YBA
programs, the awardee was Rachel Hirota.
Rev. Toshio Murakami Sangha Award: Rev. Toshio Murakami served as a BCA minister from 1959
to 1986, serving here at Buddhist Church of Oakland from
1984-1986. He also served as the Bishop of the Buddhist
Churches of Canada, as well as in Australia, and the Bud-
dhist Study Center in Honolulu, HI, before passing away in
2008. Although he only served three years here in Oak-
land, he truly enjoyed his time here, and wanted to “en-
courage and support young Buddhists for their pursuit of
becoming good leaders in the Sangha, community and the
world in the light of Namu Amida Butsu. This is a token of
my sincere appreciation to the great Nembutsu Sangha of
Oakland Buddhist Church.” Awardees were Grant Kamita
and Mia Li.

supported the Festival with gift
cards, monetary contributions, items
for the silent auction, etc. I would like
to especially acknowledge Jon Tak-
agaki, chairperson and mastermind
behind this year’s event. His lead-
ership and organization made the
event a resounding success.
Obon is just around the corner.
Robert Noguchi has been working
behind the scenes to ensure that
preparations are all in place. Work
shifts for the Obon Festival are pub-
lished in this month’s Busshin. Please
review and let the church offi ce, or
the shift captain know if there are
confl icts with your schedule. Also,
if for some reason you are NOT list-
ed, and have the time to come out
and help, your eff orts will be greatly
appreciated. Please contact Robert
Noguchi at <rsnoguchi56@gmail.
com>. There are many areas that
need your help, including the con-
struction and deconstruction of
the yagura and odori area on Jack-
son Street; prep and bbq grilling
for chicken, steak, and short ribs;
and kitchen help for food prepara-
tion and clean-up. We’re planning to
make maki-sushi again for the Festi-
val in response to special requests,
so extra help is needed on Friday to
prep the ingredients; and dedicated
folks on Saturday to roll the sushi.
This is in addition to help for inari-
sushi, spam musubi, chirashi; udon,
curry and of course, rice.
Again, if you wish to honor past
family members during the Obon
Festival, please complete the Obon
Lantern tag request available in this
month’s Busshin, on the church web-
site, or by calling the church offi ce.
We will use tags made in previous
years to hang from lanterns that
will be placed on the wires above
the odori (dancing) area on Jackson
Street. For families who have experi-
enced a recent loss, please complete
the form and allow time for a new
tag to be made. Donations for a new
tag is $35 per lantern; $20 to hang
previous tags. Deadline for Forms to
be returned to the church offi ce is
Friday, July 28th.
As we go into July, plan to come
and refresh your dance steps at
odori practices starting the week
of July 17th; and please calendar
Sunday, July 16th for the Church
Picnic to be held again at Kennedy
Grove Recreation area off San
Pablo Dam Road in El Sobrante. Have
a great summer!
I WISH TO THANK THE MANYSangha members and friends of the
Sangha for all your help and support
at our Bazaar and Food Festival on
June 17 and 18!
This was the second consecu-
tive year with unpredictable chal-
lenges. Last year, you’ll recall that the
Warriors played in the 7th game
of the NBA championship fi nals on
bazaar Sunday and this year, it was the
extreme and unbearable hot weather
that dominated the weekend. It is
our BCO spirit, exhibited by every-
one’s endurance and unwavering
dedication and commitment, that
resulted in a successful annual fund-
raiser.
Thank you to the Bazaar and Food
Festival planning committee and shift
captains for your leadership and
commitment to excellence through-
out the weekend. I continuously heard
from our guests how delicious all our
food items were and how our volun-
teers were so friendly and welcoming.
Many thanks to all the volunteers
who constructed the booths, partici-
pated in food preparation, and helped
with de-construction and clean-up on
Sunday evening, Monday, Tuesday,
and beyond. And, I wish to acknowl-
edge and recognize all who make
things happen “behind the scenes,”
including obtaining permits, dealing
with inspections, purchasing goods
and services, approaching donors for
the raffl e and silent auction items, and
preparing letters of acknowledge-
ment to our generous donors.
It is truly a team eff ort and I wish
to express my deep gratitude and ap-
preciation to everyone for making our
annual Bazaar and Food Festival and
BCO so special!

very own Rev. Michael Endo and Brian
Nagata represented BCO on the
TechnoBuddha Kitchen Crew in their
new “Nom-Nom-Nom Dabutsu”
aprons, a gift from the TechnoBuddha
committee. And giving credit where it
is due, my Foods co-chair Lisa Hori-
kawa was the mastermind for all the
meals we enjoyed during the confer-
ence, from planning the menu to or-
dering the bento lunches and every-
thing in between. My favorite meal
item was the French Toast Casserole
that we had for Saturday breakfast.
I also want to thank our 2017
co-chairs, Steve Tamekuni and
Kimberly Koga, for all their hard work
and leadership in planning a success-
ful conference. And thank you to the
rest of the 2017 TechnoBuddha com-
mittee for all their work and being
so welcoming and enjoyable to be
around.
In the 13 months since my fi rst
ever TechnoBuddha conference
attended and this year’s conference,
the interactions with my fellow 2017
committee members and non-com-
mittee people too have been so much
fun. A decade of TechnoBuddha is in
the books, but as an awesome country
song goes, “We’re just gettin’ started.”

BUDDHIST CHURCH OF OAKLAND 30th ANNUAL BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT
Dear Members and Friends: The Buddhist Church of Oakland is proud to sponsor its 30th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament to be held at the Berkeley Country Club (formerly Mira Vista Golf & Country Club), 7901 Cutting Boulevard, El Cerrito, CA 94530 on its new date of Monday, August 28, 2017. We look forward to this new month where we have had it during October in the past. We are, once again, offering corporate sponsorships to invite local community organizations, companies or individuals to further participate in the church’s programs including community outreach. Three levels of corporate sponsorship are available. Each level provides corporate representatives to participate as well as opportunities to identify your company or business in our program and at the golf course. Other opportunities include providing a donation that could be used as a raffle or door prize. We also ask you to consider supporting this fundraiser by being a hole-sponsor for the tournament. In recognition of your monetary donation of $100 or more for the hole-sponsor, a sign advertising your business or your personal sponsorship will be displayed at one of the 18 tee areas and will be acknowledged in the printed program. A list of the types of sponsorships and donations are on the second page. In order for your donation to be properly acknowledged in the program, please complete and return the form on Page 2 to the church by August 14, Monday. It is with deepest gratitude and appreciation to the many participants and donors over the years that we are able to continue having this annual event. Your consideration of supporting this event is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Sincerely,
Keiju Terada, Committee Chair Committee Members: Michael Endo, Mary Hiromoto, Eric Ikeda, Linda Minamoto, Edward Mon, Peter Nakaso, John Neishi, Ron Nomura, Jeff Suda, Ted Tanisawa, Gary Tominaga, Janet Tsukahira
