So although Shakyamuni “died” and entered “final nirvana,” we can also understand Buddha as still active in the world, whether as Amida Buddha or as Buddha activity manifesting in the world. IN THIS ISSUE

Our main observance in February is Nirvana Day, which can be understood as Shakyamuni Buddha’s memorial service. When

put in these terms, it makes me ask myself, “Was Shakyamuni Buddha just a regular person like you and me? Or is Buddha something bigger?” Ultimately, I think that Buddha can be understood in a variety of ways. There is something to be said for the idea that Shakyamuni was simply a regular human being, albeit someone who had a profound spiritual insight into the true nature of reality. For one thing, this carries the implication that the insights that Shakyamuni gained can be attained by anyone.

At the same time, “Buddha” can also be understood as the truth itself. If we look at it this way, then Shakyamuni Buddha can be seen as truth manifesting in our world. This could help us understand the idea of there being more than one Buddha – individual Buddhas like Shakyamuni, in addition to more “cosmic” Buddhas like Amida, or even an idea of Buddha as beyond conceptual thought – truth itself – this is sometimes referred to as the “Dharmakaya” or “Dharma Body” Buddha.

So although Shakyamuni “died” and entered “final nirvana,” we can also understand Buddha as still active in the world, whether as Amida Buddha or as Buddha activity manifesting in the world. Maybe this is the best part – if we find that we cannot perform on the level of Shakyamuni or have the spiritual awakening he did, we can still encounter the truth in our own lives, in the actions of others or maybe even manifest it ourselves.

In gassho,Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge

Continued from page 3experience our entire church com-munity coming together to share in this wonderful tradition. Thank you to the Youth Club, OBWA, Momi-jikai, Dharma School, Gakuen, and Jr. YBA for their many contributions and support of mochitsuki. Many thanks to Don Kaneshige for his leadership of our mochitsuki, to Jean Kawata for leading the prep- aration of the anko prior to mochitsuki, and to all the mem-bers of our Sangha, and friends our Sangha, who volunteered their help to pick up the mochi rice, purchase ingredients, wash the rice, prepare the anko, and, of course, prepare our delicious mochi.

Many thanks to Koda Farms for their generous donation of the mochi rice. We are deeply grate-ful to the Koda family for their continued support and we also would like to express our apprecia-tion to the Koda Farms staff for their graciousness during our annual visit.

I also wanted to say thank you to the many volunteers who par-ticipated in the temple clean-up on December 23rd. And, I wish to ex-press my appreciation to the Board for being responsible for the soba refreshments following the New Year’s Eve service and many thanks Steve Terusaki for chairing this event.

Again, all the best in the New Year!

BUSSHIN FEBRUARY 2013

Happy New Year to all! The first half of December

was a busy month for the Dharma School and for the church. The 3/4/5th grade class chaired the Fam-ily Dharma Service on December 2 and did a fabulous job. The 1st and 2nd grade class chaired the service on December 9, Bodhi Day and they did a fabulous job, too! We all en-joyed the wonderful skit and video prepared by the Jr. YBA/Senior High Class for Bodhi Day. We have lots of talent in the Dharma School!! Then, Dharma School students came out to help all the church members with Mochitsuki on December 16. Lots of rice flour, but mostly on the mochi!! Thank you to: Henry Abrahamson, Martha Castro, Kelsey Hirota, Rachel Hirota, Grant Kamita, Glenn Kamita, Garrett Kamita, Alex Lang, Joshua Lang, Bryant Lee, Cynthia Lee, Mia Li, Emiko Masamori, Keiko Masamori, David Medina, Kiyomi Nomura, Mayumi Nomura, Sydney Wong, and their parents. We also had help from friends Sasha Gordon and Lanae Wong. Let me know if you forgot to sign the attendance sheet and I’ll add you to the list!

Thank you to the Dharma School families and students who

came out to help clean the chapel and the altar area (Naijin): Kiyomi and Mayumi Nomura and their Dad Ron Nomura; Martha Castro and her Mom Donna; Grant, Glenn and Garrett Kamita and their Dad George; David Medina and his mom Hiromi Yoshioka. Your help was much appreciated.

In the month of January, as we approach HoOnko (Shinran Sho-nin’s January 13 memorial service), we remember and thank Shinran Shonin. “The main reason for con-ducting the HoOnko service is that in our daily lives, most of us are too busy to think of gratitude. There-fore the HoOnko Service provides us an opportunity to do so on the anniversary of the death of Shinran Shonin. At this time, we would once again trace the footsteps of Shinran Shonin with deep appreciation in our hearts and resolve to dedicate ourselves in the service of others to truly make our world more friendly and a happier place for all man-kind.” (from Buddhist Holidays)

One piece of information about Shinran Shonin that our students are learning: How many names did Shinran Shonin have during his life-time? The answer is 7 in his lifetime! His names reflect his life’s journey. 1) He was born Matsuwaka Maro; 2) when he was ordained, he was named Hannen; 3) Zenshin was the name he took when he left Mt. Hiei; 4) Shakku was the name Honen gave him when he studied with Ho-nen; 5) Yoshizane Fujii was the name forced on him when he was exiled;

6) Gutoku was the name he gave himself meaning “neither monk or layman” during his exile; 7) Shinran was the name he took af-ter his exile ended; 8) Kenshin Daishi was the name be-stowed on him posthumously dur-ing the Meiji Period (1860-1912).

So, if I ask you what Shinran Shonin’s birth name was – you’ll all be able to know!

The Dharma School is very grateful to the following members for their donation. Thank you so much!

Grace and David Hara – in honor of their grandchildren’s birthdays (Colin, Jenna and Rya Kwong)

Oakland Buddhist Women’s Association – their gift to support the Dharma School

Mr. Dick Sasaki – in apprecia-tion of his recovery

Gary and Anne Tominaga – in honor of their son Grant’s birthday

HAPPY BIRTHDAY We wish a Happy

Birthday to the follow-ing students born in January:

Kyle Wong, Ryan Wong, Matthew Li, and Joshua Lang

Wishing you all the best!

BUSSHIN FEBRUARY 2013

The Buddhist church of Oak-land expresses many thanks

to Mrs. Tama Koda & Koda Farms for their most generous donation of rice for Mochi Tsuki. Arigato gozaimasu!

Thank you to Tom Tsuboi for fabricating new parts for both of our mochi machines. He had fabricated the part for one, which broke last year, and had also made a spare that came in handy when another ma-chine broke at this years event.

You have a chance to be a winner each and every month if you join the 200+ Club! Please ask any Board member how to join. Every member qualifies for each and every drawing. Proceeds go to the maintenance of the church.

Did you know that at least twice a year, volunteers gather at the Buddhist Church to repair, mend, and maintain the church, apart-ment building, and the Isse Kai Kan? Thank you to our Super He-roes: Doug Izuno, Don Kaneshige, John Minamoto, Aki Morimoto, Bobby Ozawa, Gail Ryujin, Dick Sasaki, Mark Shimamoto, Cliff Yokomizo, & Tom Yokomizo. They changed the chandelier lights in the

main hall, installed CO2 alarms, put new batteries in fire alarms, installed locks, cleaned up the balconies, checked each apartment, and put in light bulbs for exit signs and lights around the property. Please consider joining these gentlemen on the Maintenance Committee!

Let’s give a rousing cheer for the families that came on Sunday, December 23rd for Omigaki (church clean up): Miyumi , Kiyomi & Ron Nomura; Grant, Glenn, Garrett & George Kamita, Martha & Donna Yoshida Castro, and David Medina & Hiromi Yosh-ioka! Please join Rev. & Mika Bridge, Michael Endo, Setsuko Furuta, Karen Hashimoto, Ruby Kuritsubo, May Kleven, Maya & Gary Lawrence, John Minamoto, Sachiko Nakamura, Namie Naito, Robert & Gayle Noguchi, Tak Otsuka, and Carol Thunen for the next Omigaki on Sunday, July 28th, 9:00 am to 11:30 am.

Reminder: Nirvana Day is Sunday, February 17th at 10:00 am. Lady Takeko Kujo and OBWA Members Memorial Service will follow.

TEMPLE TID-BITS

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the temple’s

Annual General Meeting on Sunday, February 3, immediately follow-ing the morning service. This is an opportunity for you to receive the temple’s financial report, hear from each of the temple’s organizations regarding the previous year’s activi-ties, ask questions, and provide in-put and comments. We encourage all Sangha members to attend and to participate in this forum. The New Year’s celebration will follow the Annual General Meeting in the social hall.
