iF We Dig

VenueBarney Simon DateS28 October - 6 NovembertimeTue - Sat 20:00Sun 15:15

If We Dig Deep is inspired by the life and work of Luli Callinicos, a remarkable woman and social historian, dedicated to unearthing real stories of

the people who created and shaped Johannesburg and the country we live in. It is a delicate multi-lingual piece performed by Fiona Ramsay set against the backdrop of student uprisings and a complex societal landscape. We meet unusual characters who lived on the edges of a burgeoning mining town, each with unique stories of their struggles, dreams and challenges, woven together in a common humanity.

Lamento

VenueJohn Kani DateS3 - 6 NovembertimeThu - Sat 20:00Sun 15:00

“Kobie’s work as a director has been winning awards and filling houses in Europe,” says Shirley Apthorp, director of Umculo.

“Umculo is very proud to be able to present LAMENTO at the Market Theatre. It’s multi-layered and incredibly engaging, and somehow both precise and intensely lyrical. You can see why his shows are selling out in Germany, but at the same time what he has created here is uniquely South African. This is a love song to a country that is being torn apart by conflict, and a testimony to its capacity for healing.”

“Johnny Boskak is a rock n roll play, and not just because it opens with a Bruce Springsteen

track. The very name of the play references Koos Kombuis ultimate rock n roll song, Johnny is nie dood nie, and Craig Morris channels roadsters from Jack Kerouac to James Phillips, with every white boy in between who stuck his thumb out on the highway until the 90s became the oughts.” Steve Kretzmann (Critter)

Rashid Lanie is an internationally acclaimed Jazz musician who has has worked with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Madonna , Adam and the

Ants and Yanni. There are many epithets to describe the latest album release by this acclaimed pianist, composer, producer and recording artist. A musical ode to hope is one of them. A soulful tribute to roots and routes is another. But words are ill equipped to encapsulate the elegant exuberance of Forever Hopeful, Lanie’s 5th album of original music.
