How It Works: Make a summer reading goal. All rising Kindergartners through 5th graders are eligible. There are 73 days of summer ....how many hours can you read? 20 minutes a day = 24 hours….40 minutes a day = 48 hours. You and your parent complete the Participation Form (below). Don’t forget to set a reading goal. Return the Participation Form to your teacher by June 5th. Rising Kindergartners turn in your forms to the front office. Contact relatives, neighbors and special friends and ask them to sponsor your reading. They can pledge a $ amount per hour OR a flat pledge fee. Use your Pledge Form to record your sponsors Record your hours. Read! Read! Read! Any time during June 12th - August 23rd spent reading counts! The time can be reading to self, reading to a friend or stuffed animal out loud, or being read to by a parent, sibling or caregiver. Collect your pledges!! Turn in your Pledge Form and Reading Logs to your teacher by Friday, August 28th. Drop them off at Open House or any time the first week of school. Prizes! Every child who participates will have their name entered in a drawing just for participating. Want to increase your chances of winning? For every 10 hours your child reads, their name will be added to the drawing again. Three (3) Kindle’s will be given away!!! For BWE suggested summer reading lists go to: http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/beverlywoodsES/Pages/Default.aspx Additional Participation Forms and Reading Logs can be found on our PTA website: http://beverlywoodspta.weebly.com. Email [email protected] with additional questions. BWE’s Summer Read-A-Thon is a brand new Beverly Woods PTA sponsored program designed to encourage our kids to keep reading over the summer. It is estimated that children who do not read daily over the summer lose two to three months of reading progress. Let’s prevent the brain drain by keeping our kids reading! We are hoping to “open the doors to reading” while replacing the front entrance doors (see illustrations on the reverse side). The cost of these doors is $15,000; any additional money raised will go toward further capital improvements to our school’s infrastructure. BWE’s Summer Read-A-Thon - PLEDGE FORMI am a student at Beverly Woods Elementary. I am participating in my school’s Summer Read-A-Thon. This is a brand new program designed to encourage students to keep reading over the summer. It is estimated that children who do not read daily over the summer lose two to three months of reading progress. Let’s prevent the “brain drain” by keeping our kids reading!

We are hoping to “open the doors to reading” while making building improvements not covered by CMS. Our school was built in 1964 and is in need of significant updates. We plan to use the money from this Read-A-Thon to replace the dated front doors of our school. This will enhance the appearance of our front entrance while making our school even safer for our students and staff.
