30TH PEACE DAY PAJAMA DAY CELEBRATION

Last Friday, students and staff celebrated reaching our 30th

PEACE Day by participating in Pajama Day. Students

are now working towards earning their 45th

PEACE Day celebration by making sure their behaviors create a

peaceful environment at Brisas. Below is a picture of staff as well as students celebrating when we announced that

we earned yet another peaceful day towards reaching our next goal of 45 PEACE days.

BOOK FAIR BEGINS…READY, SET, READ! This year, the Book Fair is even more important as funding for books for our library continues to be cut each

year. The fall and spring Book Fair is the only opportunity for the library to earn money to buy books to keep our

library the best stocked library in the Kyrene District. The Book Fair is open during the following days / times:

Monday, October 29th

8:00 am – 3:15 pm

Tuesday, October 30th

8:00 am – 3:15 pm

**Pumpkin Walk** 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm Wednesday, October 31

st 8:00 am – 1:45 pm

Thursday, November 1st 8:00 am – 3:15 pm

Friday, November 2nd

8:00 am – 3:15 pm

Scholastic Book Fair flyers already went home with your child and students have watched a video which

highlighted featured books. All classrooms will visit the Book Fair with their library class. Students are

encouraged to shop early in the week because there are many times during the Book Fair that we run out of a

popular book. Books that are in the Book Fair flyer are guaranteed, so if we don't have it in stock, you can prepay

for those books and we will deliver it to your child’s classroom when it arrives. We do restock throughout the

Book Fair and there are always plenty of great choices. Don't forget that you can also donate to your child’s

classroom library or our school library, too. Wish lists of book titles will be posted at the Book Fair - what a great

way to leave a legacy of your child's love of reading!

READ-A-THON’S DJ PARTY & LIMO RIDES All participating students should have brought home their Read-a-thon prizes last

week. This week, 141 students who raised $75 or more will enjoy attending our DJ

party in the Brisas MPR on Friday, November 2nd

from 1:15-2:15 PM; tickets for this

event were included in your child’s gift bag. In addition, 56 students who raised $200

or more will enjoy taking a Limo Ride to McDonalds for ice cream with Sheriff

Winkelmann and Deputy Katsiris on Thursday, November 1st (K/1

st grade at 12:30

PM; 2nd

/3rd

grade at 11:30 AM; 4th

/5th

grade at 1:30 PM); please make sure

participating students return their permission slip forms ASAP. Thanks again to

everyone who supported our Read-a-thon and to Brisas parent, Srilu Viene, who did an

amazing job coordinating this fundraising event.

Help our library keep

the best high-interest

books in our

students’ hands.

MIX IT UP (AT LUNCH) DAY ON TUESDAY

Did you know that Tuesday, October 30th

is also National Mix It Up Day? Our NEHS students

are excited to bring this national campaign to Brisas to help teach tolerance. We will be

encouraging students to “Mix It Up” to identify, question and cross social

boundaries. During regularly scheduled lunch times, students will randomly have their

hand stamped with a different color as they enter the MPR. After they get their lunch,

they will be directed to a table with the same color as on their stamp. NEHS students

will be there to help students use conversation starters to meet new friends or learn more

about somebody they may already know. Students will still be sitting by grade level, but not

by class. If you are interested in learning more about this national initiative, you can visit the

Teaching Tolerance website: www.tolerance.org/mix-it-up/what-is-mix.

PBIS INITIATIVE GOING STRONG Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports is a proven effective approach to support academic and positive

social behaviors for all students. At Brisas, we recognize students daily with our PBIS tickets, which then get

drawn weekly, monthly and quarterly for different opportunities for students to earn rewards for their positive

behavior. This past week, we had a few more September monthly winners who got to be the principal’s assistant

for the day. On Thursday of this coming week, we will be drawing students’ names for our October monthly

drawing. Below are few pictures from last week:

HELP US HELP PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Brisas NEHS and Aprende NJHS will be working together again on a group service project of making fleece

blankets for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. These student-leaders would like to get even more families involved

this year by asking families to help donate fleece for the blankets. If your family would like to help, please

donate fleece cut in pieces 1yd x 1yd, 2yds x 2yds, and/or 3yds x 3yds by November 16th

so that our members

have enough time to cut it before they do all the tying on December 1st. Last year, student-leaders made and

donated 336 fleece blankets to help keep children warm. This year, their goal is to make and donate even more!

Please consider helping them by donating fleece. Thank you for your support!

KYRENE PARENT SUMMIT – REGISTER NOW! How can you help your child have a great school experience? Parents, please

consider attending a night of informative sessions on Thursday, November 8th

.

For only $5, you get dinner, two sessions, and childcare! There are twelve

sessions offered, which include sessions such as Preparing for Middle School,

Getting the Brain Ready for Kindergarten, Working Collaboratively for Your

Child with Disabilities, Preparing for College Now, and more! See the

attached session grid. For even more detailed descriptions of the topics and

presenters, go to www.kyrene.org/parent_summit. If you have any

questions about this event, please contact Amanda Hamm at

[email protected] or (480) 541-1520.

WHAT WAS WITH THE 50’S CLOTHING? Well, it’s hard to believe…but last week kindergarten enjoyed their 50

th day of school by dressing up in clothes

from the 50’s decade. They had a great time, but no worries…we’ll all have the opportunity to enjoy dressing up

in clothes from different decades on January 25th

at our annual Decades Dance. So, parents, take advantage now

of buying a costume after Halloween when most items will go on sale. Your child will be able to choose to come

dressed up in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s or even the 90’s decade for the dance. It’s another great family event!

BRISAS HONOR ROLL At Brisas, we recognize and celebrate the academic accomplishments of our students! Once students are in 4

th and

5th

grade, they begin to earn letter grades, such as A’s and B’s, instead of P’s for performing, etc. Each quarter,

students who receive all A’s earn the distinction of being on the “Principal’s Honor Roll”, while students who

earn all A’s and/or B’s earn the distinction of being on the “Gecko Honor Roll”. The following students have

earned Brisas Honor Roll for the 1st quarter:
