  • INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTIONThe Vikings lived around AD 700 to

AD 1100.They came from the three

    countries of Scandinavia: Denmark,

    Norway and Sweden. During this

    period many Vikings left Scandinavia

    and travelled to many other

countries such as Britain and Ireland.

The word 'Viking comes from the

    language called Old Norse and

    means A VIKING RAID.

  • Fast ships for raiding and war

    Longboats.

Passenger ships- slower and wider- the

    KNORR.

The Vikings could jump out of the ship

and start fighting, and then make a quick

    getaway if they were chased.

  • A Viking ship was built beside a river. A

tall oak tree was cut to make the keel.

The builders cut long planks of wood

for the sides. They used wooden pegs

and iron rivets to fasten the wooden

    pieces together.

  • A Viking ship had one big square sail

    made of woven wool.

In some ships, the mast for the sail could

    be folded down.

Ships were sailed by sails or man rowing.

A STERN, a big oar at the back of the

ship, used to steer the ship.

A longboat had room for 40-60 men.

  • Vikings sailed close to the coast

    whenever possible, watching for

    landmarks.

The Vikings invented a kind of sun

compass to help find their way.

At night they watched the stars.

By watching birds or even the colour of

the water, an experienced sailor could

    tell when land was close.

  • Longboats:Have dragon

    heads and tails.Have shields and

    oars.Used for war and

    invading other countries.

    Can float in shallow water

    Viking longships could sail in

shallow water. So they could travel

up rivers as well as across the sea

  • Throughout the Viking Age, there were

many battles between the Vikings and

the English. In the 10th century the

English reconquered much of the land

held by Vikings. In 954, they killed Eric

Bloodaxe, the last Viking king of Jorvik.

After Eric was killed in battle, the Vikings

in England agreed to be ruled by

    England's king.

  • Fun FactsVikings in the East saw people playing chess, and took the game home with

    them.

Viking ships were the best in Europe. Besides the longboats used for raiding and

war, they had special fishing boats. For long-distance voyages, they built deeper,

    broader ships called knorrs.

Around 500 years before Christopher Columbus discovered the American

continent, Vikings had visited its shores, landing in what is now Canada in around

    AD 1000.

By 1000 AD, some of the Vikings settled in northern France, where they

    were called

the Normans, or Northmen, and the area where they settled is still called

    Normandy.

Here they also converted to Christianity.
