Dave MatthewsBorn: 1967 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Formed the Dave Matthews Band in 1991.

Dave Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1967 . Two years after his birth he and his family moved to Westchester County, New York for a job his father pursued for IBM (dmband.com). The family stayed in New York until the early Seventies for a few years when they moved to Cambridge, England; and then made the move back to New York (dmband.com). The source of moving so many places in a short time was the family support of their fathers. He was a physicist, who traveled many places for his work (Harper, Maximum Dave Matthews). In 1977 Daves father passed away from lung cancer (dmband.com), and Dave and his family moved back to South Africa to be with extended family, (Harper, Maximum Dave Matthews).

3Carter Beauford

First member to join Dave Matthews.

Extensive musical background before joining the band.

Known in drumming circles as an excellent percussionist.

A rare version of Halloween showcasing Beaufords talentsCarter Beauford was an older experienced musician at this time with more connections than Dave Matthews.4Boyd Tinsley

-Boyd Tinsley joined the band reluctantly.

-He remained in his own band, The Boyd Tinsley Three, for some time after joining the Dave Matthews Band.

-In the bands early days he was thought to be Dave Matthews.

The next person they approached was violinist Boyd Tinsley. Tinsley was a classically trained violinist who also converted to a Rock and Roll setting (Harper, Maximum Dave Matthews).5Stefan Lessard -Stefan is the youngest Band member to play in the Dave Matthews Band.

-Stefan has his own line of snowboarding equipment.

-Stefan changed from stand-up bass to standard to play in the band.

Almost complete Dave was now seeking a bassist to play with the band. He was exposed to many through his job at Millers but he didnt feel quite right about any of them. After explaining this problem to one of the bars regulars, who also happened to be a bass teacher, the man suggest one of his students: Stefan Lessard. Although Lessard was used to playing the up right bass, he switch to accommodate the band (Harper, Maximum Dave Matthews).

6Leroi Moore-Leroi had a long history of playing many woodwind instruments before the band was formed.

-Leroi was the last member to join the Dave Matthews Band.

-Leroi Moore died in 2008 due to an ATV accident.

On Beaufords suggestion they both approached Leroy Moore, a local Jazz saxophonist to listen to the music Dave had come up with. Leroy Moore (1961-2008) was interested in what he heard and made the commitment to play with the group, (Harper, Maximum Dave Matthews). After Moore had join the group a man named Peter Grisor joined to play the keyboard with the band. He played with the band for a number of years but left as he didnt want to take extended touring trips away from home and left the band before they became a big name (Harper, Maximum Dave Matthews).

7Meaning Behind the MusicMany hardships befell the band including:-The murder of Daves Sister-The death of Stefan's infant child.-The death of Daves Father.

The music from the Dave Matthews Band is often written with deathly undertones. After suffering so many personal loses in the band it is no wonder why the music sometimes reminds up of pain and lose. One of the bands best album Big Whiskey and the Gru Grux King was written and recorded after the death of one of their bandmates.8BAND MILESTONES2004 The Dave Matthews Band played to an audience of over 90,000 in Central Park. 1991 They played their first performance at an art fair.1997 DMB won a Grammy for best rock and pop vocal performance. http://www.davematthewsband.com/#/history

No time to exchange*Again the form changes back into the original melody and beat. There is no variation form the pervious verses. Except on 2:15 the percussion gives a snare hit and all instruments rest while the vocals fills in the empty space: People in every direction. The instruments come back for one beat G and then stop for another voice only space: No words exchanged no time to exchange them.

17Ants Marching: Intro and Instrumentals

0:00-Intro*The first thing we hear in this intro is the percussion. There are three snare hits, followed by the violin and saxophone playing the same notes: G G D, D D G. repeating throughout most of the song. The dynamic for this song is a medium level, with the rhythm is keep relatively the same throughout this piece. After the violin and saxophone play the chords Twice the guitar come in playing another variation of G G D, D D G creating the main melody played almost all the way through the song. 0:54-Small Instrumental*The guitars maintain the same pattern but the saxophone creates a different harmony an alternate solos.1:50-2nd Instrumental*The guitars remain playing the main melody but this time the violin and saxophone get more time to harmonize. Again, they switch off playing and resting but they improvise around the melody more and create a bright sound.3:12-Main Instrumental *While using similar components the saxophone breaks off into a beautifully bright solo. The dynamic returns to its normal level and the guitar returns to the main melody. The vocals come in at 4:26 Lights down you up and die and the music ends on the chord G.

18Ants Marching: Chorus

1:02-1st ChorusText- take these chances place them in a box until a quieter time lights down, you up and die.*The form changes for the first time in the chorus, the guitar take a traditional chord progression BM, D, G, BM, A. and the vocals harmonize with that structure. The violin offers a change from the main melody to a ascending piece back into the verse.1:36-2nd Chorus Text- take these chances place them in a box until a quieter time lights down, you up and die.*The guitars return to the chord progression, offering the familiar melody and harmony we hear from the chorus last time. 20Baby Blue: Verses

0:20-1st VerseText- Confess, your kiss still knocks me off my legs. The first time I saw you was like a punch right through my chest and I will forever, cause youll forever be my one true broken heart, pieces inside of meand youll forever, my baby be.*The melody continues in the 1st verse. At 1:03 the lead vocals create the main harmony. The dynamic remains soft here increase only slightly when the violins play. The form changes little from the intro and the rest of the song as well as the rhythm, they both suggest to the mind a slow song, with heavy indications of grief or morning. 1:53-2nd VerseText- Confess I'm not quite ready to be left. Still, I know I gave my level best. You give, you give, to this I can attest. You made me, you made me. You and me forever, baby.*The rhythm still remains the same as we go into the second verse. The form returns to the familiar melody and the dynamic also returns to the level it was in the 1st verse. There is still the absence of instruments other than the guitar and violins.

21Baby Blue: Chorus

1:03-ChorusText- You will rest your head, your strength once saving. And when you wake you will fly away, holding tight to the legs of all your angels. Goodbye my love, into your blue, blue eyes, your blue, blue world, you're my baby blue.*In the 1st chorus the dynamic grow louder than ever, and the violins play constantly. Notice, here that there are no percussions and the lead guitar has also gone away, giving way two just the two instruments playing. The form also changes with the absence of the main melody. The rhythm however remains unchanged, and at the peak loudness the violins fade and the guitar goes back into the main melody.2:36-ChorusText- You will rest your head, your strength once saving. And when you wake you will fly away, holding tight to the legs of all your angels. Goodbye my love, into your blue, blue eyes, your blue, blue world, you're my baby blue. 0:24-1st VerseText- we were above you standing underneath us we were not yet lovers dragons were smoked bumblebees were stinging us I was soon to be crazy.*Here we hear the verse melody being played by the guitar come in. The rhythm is more regular and the dynamic remains loud. Lead vocals create the verse harmony and the form of the song has changed in the verse as the saxophone and the violin are no longer playing the main melody. 1:12-2nd VerseText- we're wearing nothing, nothing but our shadows, shadows falling down on the beach sand remembering once, out on the beaches we wore pineapple grass bracelets.*The form changes again to the verse melody played by the guitar and the accompanied by the saxophone and violin. The dynamic remains the same as well and the rhythm here and the vocals again create harmony.2:15-3rd VerseText- we are all sitting legs crossed round a fire my yellow flame she dances tequila drinking oh our minds will wonder to wondrous places.*Another change in form happens here when the guitar changes melody again. Vocals create the same harmony we have heard in the first two verses and the dynamic goes unchanged.

24Tripping Billies: Chorus

0:39-1st ChorusText- eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die 'cause we're tripping Billies.*The instruments you hear in the chorus are the guitar and the drums. Notice hear that the guitar plays a variation of the main melody in the chorus, but still begins with an F# chord and ends on an A. The dynamic grows a little quieter with the absence of the other instruments, but still remain fairly loud. Again vocals create the harmony and the chorus ends with a brief musical interlude.1:28-2nd ChorusText- so why would you care to get out of this place you and me and all our friendssuch a happy human race 'cause we're tripping Billies.*A change in form is once again present as the guitar returns to a variation of the main melody. The lyrics have changed, from eat, drink and be merry, to so why would you care, to get out of this place? The bass guitar joins the harmony to create a slightly loud dynamic, and the chorus ends again with an instrumental.2:30-3rd ChorusText- so why would you care to get out of this place you and me and all our friendssuch a happy human race. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.*The chorus text is sung with both the 1st chorus and second chorus lyrics. The dynamic is unchanged as we head again into the main melody. 3:50-4th ChorusText- so why would you care to get out of this place you and me and all our friendssuch a happy human race. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.*The guitar riff remains the same from the instrumental into the 4th chorus. Another form change brings the violins harmony into softer harmony with the guitars main melody.

25Tripping Billies: Intro and Instrumentals

0:00-Intro*The dynamic starts off loud in this song, and continues all the way through. The saxophone and electric violin play the main harmony of the song. The rhythm is fairly fast, and there is no harmony present.3:03-Main Instrumental*The biggest change of form happens here, while the guitar takes on the main melody played in the intro and chorus, and the violin plays a solo offering a much different harmony.4:22-Instrumental*this instrumental starts off with exactly the same note that the intro played. Both the violin and saxophone are present. The dynamic is a little louder for the songs outro and the song ends on the same A chord, then.
