"I'd think of my style as eclectic; a fusion of ideas and

inspirations from those around me, the art I admire, and of course what has graced the runways

during fashion week…"

So it was New York Fashion Week …one of my favorite weeks of

the year (probably THE favorite to be honest…) With a vanguard of

newcomers and top designers, new fall/ winter lines, and the stunning

people that fill the streets of New York for all these shows and parties- I

mean, who isn’t enamored with it all?! I love how a week of fashion,

press, and parties can bring together so many people. From fashion

icon and "it" girl Alexa Chung sitting front row, to those at home live

streaming the most anticipated shows on their

computers... NYFW bonds us in celebration of its

aesthetic marvel. This season I

saw innovations pieced

together to bring a little zing,

bang and pop to the upcoming

fall and winter. Well, what a

week...

THE ZING of the week was the

assortment of patterns that were marking

wraps, jackets, skirts and even shoes. The

runways were filled with organic takes on

contemporary orientalism and ethnic prints.

A few especially caught my eye…

Radiating designs were balanced with

simplistic crème and black in Mara

Hoffman's crop top and skirt set.

Tadashi's fitted jacket embodied an

oriental cutout pattern, highlighted with

pale yellow under-toning the blue. Then

Alexander Wang, using his heat activated

leather, pushed yellow through paisley overlay. I

loved how intricate standouts were paired

together for such dominating looks.

The runways were also dashing with vivid and

imaginative prints. Designers used these prints

to emphasize silhouette through the use of

popping color. Clover Canyon, always

embodying an adventurous array of line and

shape, did so especially. Their silhouettes were so

bold and standout. I loved how they

continued the pattern onto the

matched skirt, or top. Desigual,

another vivid and ethnic brand,

brought a wave of flamboyant

energy to every look with

paisley nudes swirling into

bright orange and green ovals.

I'm inspired by the use of these

brilliant colors in the drear of the fall

and winter seasons. These designers

were integral in reminding us of what

is to come in the future months…

I know that some

favorite pieces in my

wardrobe feature exotic

patterns of some sort.

While mixing such

individualized patterns

together seems a little

crazy for some people, I

think it is super cool. I remember

pairing my classic Burberry print scarf

with my blue ikat coat (and wearing

that combo nearly every chance I had).

I loved it because patterns play on each

other and release expressions that a

solo pieces couldn’t rock alone. So be a

little risky and pair some unexpected

combos together…you never know

what may work!

TRIMS! I love morphing two stand

alone pieces into an omnibus

design. On the runways this

season I saw the use of animal

features combined in exotic

pairings. Fur and feathers acted as

the standout trims alongside

structured vests and leather skirts.

Georgine used fur for the cuffs on

sleeves- a inimitable spin on the classic

muff. And how about the feather ruffle

on the vest by Peter Som or the use of

the feathers added to make coattails by

Milly? Novel.

Trim isn't always the addition of feathers to a

coat, or lace to the edge of a top…but can

be found in the small details that embellish

outfits to perfection. The horizontal striped

socks I spotted on models at the Hache show

really inspired me to reinvent my footwear

approach.

Wearing a simple knit sock with my cutout

combat boots or 1461 acid pink Doc Martins

previously were standard fare for me. But after

noticing how the socks at the Hache show were

took the plaid dresses to such a cool edge, it made

me want to explore what socks could do to

my clothes. Now I've branched out to

thinner cotton patterned socks.

Stripes, sharks, daisies-- just to

name a few favorites. They vamp up

the cool factor of my shoes and

add a mercurial edge to any outfit.

So how am I going to make those previously

mentioned feather trims appear in my

wardrobe? First I thought of the trims that I

loved and wondered how they could work

for everyday ensembles, or a night out. I

took a simple pink shift from Nasty Gal

and sewed champagne ostrich feathers

on the bottom. Now this isn't some

Disney poof gown, it’s a contemporary

take on the flapper dress. When I wore it

out, the dress was just different enough

to stand out from the crowd of tight

body cons, but mainstream enough to

have others ask me to borrow it. It was a

complete success, and for a flare, I added

some of the extra feathers to a pin in my

hair. I've already thought of other dresses I

have that will definitely be visited by this

feathery trim…

Ralph Lauren

The POP of this season was really… well…a

zip! Zippers truly created the lines of some of the

best tailored suits and jackets I have ever seen.

These bonded fabrics enhanced the

strength of the outfits they were worn

with. I love how Ralph Lauren paired

traditionally elegant suits and jackets

with Dick Tracey cool long trenches.

After all, a trench coat doesn’t have to

be a khaki beige, one can wear the same

design in leather made of black, or white

or anything in between! I especially

enjoyed the clean ivory, white, and bone colors

used by MM6 Maison Martin Margiela,

Parkchoonmoo, Diesel, & BCBG Max Azria…

Skingraft

BCBG Max

Azria The reinvention of the hallmark trench

was not the only type of jacket I was

impressed with... Designers like

Skingraft and BCBG Max Azria used a

mixed media approach to recreate the

composition of their jackets.

Skingraft's metallic gold accentuated the

leather lining, and BCBG Max Azria's

natural hue's complemented it's black

leather. Both designers also

incorporated other materials which

further drew in my eye. FUR! Fur was

genius for these pieces. The roughness

of the leather was paralleled by the

softness of the fur, giving

masculine vibes feminine twists.

These will fly off the pre-order lists

when available….

Slick. That’s the word I think of when I gaze over at a new

jacket. Jackets are the staple of utilitarianism. Jackets of all

assortments can be paired with dresses, skirts, jeans, suits, and just

anything really. But it is the way jackets are used within an

ensemble that makes them so useful…

For me, I love wearing my oversize Calvin Klein light wash

jean jacket (wow that's a mouthful). It can grunge down an outfit,

or be used in an oxymoron fashion- grungy coat

with a cocktail dress?-- yes please! Or how

about my crème leather diagonal zip jacket

that I can dress up with a short a-line skirt, or

down with black high waisted jeans? A

jacket's purpose stretches the look, it

fuses together ideas while standing

alone. So don't go off and buy a jacket

thinking you will only wear it to stay

warm. Invest in a favorite, or find an

archive piece from your parents

closet…after all, that's where I found

my Calvin, and still to this day friends

ask where I bought it…not believing it was

actually from the 80's!

I hate the word trend, BUT I do

love it when past "trends" are

recreated ways that only few have

the confidence to pull off. This

fashion week I noticed the

classic leather boot

extended up over the knee.

My favorite takes were by

Alexander Wang, MM6,

Concept Korea and

Parkchoonmoo, who paired these

skyrocketed boots with flirty short

skirts/dresses. Whatever the material,

whomever the wearer, whenever they

are worn- they give off a turbulent

confidence, which I feel, is so

empowering.
