Archimedes was assigned to figure out how much gold was in the king’s crown

He needed to know how to find the volume without melting it As he got into the bath one day, he saw the water splash over

the edges of the bath and suddenly understood how to do it. He reportedly ran through the town wearing nothing and

shouting “Eureka!” which means “I have found it!”

THE SIEGE OF SYRACUSE In the year 211 BC Syracucse

was besieged and eventually invaded

As soldiers ran through the city, killing everyone they saw, a soldier came upon Archimedes.

He was drawing circles in the sand and staring intently at them.

When he saw the soldier come near to his drawing he said “Don’t disturb my circles.”

The soldier, enraged, drew his sword and killed him.
