CHILD HOOD

Andrew Jackson lived with both his parents, Andrew and Elizabeth, and his two older brothers Hugh and Robert. His Father died shortly after his birth. When he was young he felt the urge to pull pranks, curse , and engage in fights. The American revolutionary war had a very negative affect on Jackson’s childhood. He volunteered to fight against Britian at the age of only 13. one of his brothers died of heat stroke. Him and his brother Robert were captured. While in captivity Jackson and his brother got the disease known as Smallpox and his mother freed them with a prisoner exchange. Jackson survived the smallpox. After the death of his mother at age 14, Jackson became an orphan.

ELECTION OF 1824

Andrew Jackson lost the election of 1824 to John Quincy Adams. Andrew Jackson had 99 electoral votes in the election. Most of his votes came from the southern and eastern section of the country.

ELECTION OF 1828

Andrew Jackson won the election of 1828. He had 219 electoral votes. Most votes for Jackson came from the south and the east of the United States.

JACKSON AND A POLITICAL CONVENTION

Before Andrew Jackson presidents were nominated by members of congress. Jackson influenced the right and important of the people and that they should influence who is chosen to be president. By starting a national political convention to do so he allowed the people to have a part in the elections.

JACKSON ACTIVELY CAMPAIGNING

In the election qualifications and voting were changed. Campaigning was between two parties instead of one. Jacksons heroic actions in war made him very popular during the election. He was active in promoting good things and showing leadership.He was also known for promoting the people and having them participate in voting.

SPOILS SYSTEM

Andrew Jackson gave work to political supporters that helped elect a person to office, this was know as the spoil system. States had used this before but Jackson was the first president to adopt the idea in the national government. Jackson thought honest , intelligent people were capable of holding office. He believed loyal supporters should be rewarded. He replaced many people with followers and supporters of himself. Although, over the years he never removed more than 20% of the workers

KITCHEN CABINET

Jacksons actual official cabinet was not productive due to the fact of constant arguments. Jackson realized this and turned to friends and advisors and called it a “kitchen cabinet.” the cabinet played an important role in Jacksons administrations. This slowly went away as the new official cabinet became stronger.

VETO POWER USED BY JACKSON

Jackson used veto power very much. He vetoed more bills in 1 term than all previous presidents combined. He was first to use pocket veto. Jackson definetly used this as a large advantage and made it an advantage.

NULLIFICATION CRISIS

South Carolina did not agree with paying to protect the tariff Jackson wanted. They claimed the right to nullify, meaning they wouldn't’t have to pay the tariff. This would also mean that states have authority over federal government. They eventually dropped this and payed the tariff due to a compromise bill.

TRAIL OF TEARS

Native Americans suffered the most from Andrew Jacksons vision of America. Jackson had a policy to remove all native Americans from their ancestral land. This would make room for settlers and speculators. This did not cause problems politically for Jackson because his supporters mainly were in the south and supported Indian removal.

DISCRIMINATION BY JACKSON

Jackson discriminated against African American and native American people. He supported slavery and tried to rid the country of native American tribes to create space.

INDIAN REMOVAL ACT OF 1830

On may 28, 1830 Jackson signed the Indian removal act into law. The Indians had to agree to move from there land and they did after Jacksons landslide election.

CONCLUSION

Andrew Jackson was a democrat. He grew up poor and became a orphan at a young age. He was supported by southern and eastern sates. He lost his first election but won his second against john adams. Jackson believed in the people and made sure they had a say in the presidency. He established a lot of things such as the kitchen cabinet. He used all his power to an advantage. He supported slavery and Indian removal. He was overall a great president who brought a lot to our nation and should be seen as a influence on presidents now, he has affected the history of the united states in many positive ways.
