SIX OF THE BEST The ‘RLR Motorsports 600 Sportsman Elite Championship’ might sound like a bit of a mouthful, but there is an awful lot going on in these races. Not only is there a hotly contested main championship, but there are also two completely separate championships contained within the events. Modern supersports machines are just so good that there isn’t a vast difference between the times a tuned Formula 600 bike turns in and those which can be achieved by a talented rider

on a well set up standard Superstock 600 machine. In fact, the Superstock 600 contingent did such an amazing job of matching the race times of the Formula 600 contenders last season that it was almost a no-brainer to put the two categories together to create one Elite race - and boy has the racing been fantastic right through the field! We have some real top quality riders in this championship who have acquitted themselves very well at British Championship level such as Dan Hegarty, Sam Hornsey, Aaron

Walker and Dan Harrison, as well as top real roads competitors like Dan Kneen and the fastest woman around the TT Mountain Course, Jenny Tinmouth. You might think that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for young up and coming riders to compete successfully against that level of competition, but we have some very special riders coming up through the ranks who are doing themselves proud in this respect. Let me introduce you to:- SIX OF THE BEST.

DANNY MURPHY is a 20 year old university student from Rochdale in Lancashire. Danny was a real prospect in the karting world, but just couldn’t afford the ever increasing costs in four-wheeled motorsport, where it can cost as much as £15,000 just for a space in a team awning! Being determined to carry on racing, he switched to two wheels in the Aprilia Superteen Championship at the end of 2008. Prior to his first race at Pembrey, he had only had half a day on the bike at a karting track in Preston and two hours instruction from Ron Haslam at Donington Park. In 2009 he contested the whole Superteen Championship finishing up as runner up in the Nitro Challenge and 5th overall. For 2010 Danny decided to learn four-stroke power in the Aprilia RRV450 challenge and he had some excellent results and set several lap records, ending the season in third

place. 2011 was a mixed year, which began in the BSB Superstock Championship before Danny realised he needed more track time than the BSB timetable gave over each weekend in order to set up the bike. He came back home to Thundersport and has set out his stall to win the championship this year before moving back into British or European competition next year. The number 123 Yamaha is no stranger to the sharp end already and we expect great things of this likeable young man.

BLAKE WOULDS is a 20 year old warehouseman from Bourne in Lincolnshire. His Yamaha may not be the most up to date model, but it’s set up nicely and this kid sure knows how to make the best of the package he has. Blake began his two-wheeled addiction after seeing his dad race and he talked him into taking him on the Ron Haslam Race School at Donington Park aboard a humble CBR125 Honda in 2007. In 2008 he entered the ACU Motostar Formula 125 Championship, but eventually discovered that the Aprilia Superteen Championship was the place to be. In 2009, Blake got aboard a Honda RS125 GP machine and began to get some decent results, putting together a good run in 2010 in the Thundersport GP3 series. A growth spurt during that season made fitting onto the diminutive machine more and more difficult as the season went on though. Late in the season he made the jump to an Aprilia RRV450 and all of a sudden he found himself comfortable with his machine for the very first time. Results started to come and by late season he was ready for the next move onto a 600cc machine. So far he has had some frankly inspiring results and his sole sponsor Putoline Oils must be delighted with the progress he has made. His next move looks likely to be onto a 1000cc machine as his riding style is very much suited to steering the bike on the throttle. Expect to see the number 19 Yamaha amongst the front runners for the remainder of this season though.

CURTIS WRIGHT is a 21 year old Triumph factory quality control technician from Stoney Stanton near Hinckley. Curtis has been riding bikes since he was three years old, when he hijacked his brothers TY80. After several years riding in youth motocross events he saw the Red Bull Rookies Cup advertised after a MotoGP event and, unbeknownst to his parents, he filled out the paperwork and applied. His first ever ride on a road race motorcycle was at the age of 14 during the Red Bull Rookie selection process at Valencia that year. Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t selected due to his lack of tarmac experience, but the bug had bitten. He and his dad invested in a Honda RS125 and he was soon racing as regularly as he could afford at Mallory Park, Darley Moor and Donington Park. The advent of the Thundersport GB Championship in 2008 gave Curtis the opportunity to visit

other venues and he quickly developed his skills. When he started working for Triumph the 675 Daytona was the obvious choice of machinery and he has managed the transition to four-stroke power very well indeed. His aim this year is to win the Superstock title and be as competitive as possible in the Elite Championship. Eventually his ambition is to progress to British Championships and go as far as his abilities will ultimately allow. Perhaps the Red Bull Rookie judges will see the error of their ways when the white number 74 is on top of the standings.

TOM MCHALE is a 28 year old self-employed welder and fabricator from Grange over Sands in Cumbria. Tom started riding bikes at just five years of age and was one of the top Cumbria Youth riders until he was forced to take a break from the sport at the age of 12. A fairly lengthy break ensued and Tom returned to racing at the age of 21, still on dirt bikes, but by a trick of fate Tom came to be the owner of an old Kawasaki track bike just over four years ago. An unpaid debt ended up being settled by Tom becoming the owner of the bike and the balance was forgotten. A couple of track days at Oulton Park and Donington Park were enough to convince him that Road Racing was what he wanted to do. His Honda CBR600 may not be the newest bike on the grid, but it suits Tom’s style of pushing the front end deep into corners and squaring off the turns. Over the past season and

a half Tom has forced his way to the front of the field and he intends wild-carding at a British Supersport round later in the season with a view to making a full time Supersport Cup challenge next year. Keep an eye out for Tom on the fluorescent green Honda number 4.

ANDY LAWSON is a 21 year old electrician from Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland. His dad Mike, bought him an MT5 field bike for his 7th birthday and had to take the seat off it, so that he could reach the footrests. He used to ride it up and down the beach, setting off with Mike holding the seat and either returning so that he could be caught, or as was more often the case, toppling over. Andy started racing at the age of 15 on an Aprilia RS125 at Knockhill & East Fortune. He won the Thundersport Minitwin Championship in 2010 and followed that up with a championship victory in the Thundersport 500 class in 2011. For 2012 he has a Kawasaki ZX6 in Superstock trim and he has already shown winning form with some superb rides in every conceivable kind of weather conditions. This is one young man who has that rare ability to get on absolutely anything with wheels and simply go fast. Andy wants to win the Thundersport Superstock 600 Championship this year and then move on to the British or European Championship stage next year. The bright green Kawasaki number 101 could easily go all the way with this extremely talented rider on board.

CONNOR TAGG is a 17 year old from Reading in Berkshire. Connor alternates between working in construction for his dad Chris and taking extra work on marquee erection jobs to earn cash to fund his racing. Connor has progressed through mini-moto, pit bikes and Mini GP before entering the Aprilia Superteen Championship in 2008 for the first time. In 2009 he finished fourth in one of the most competitive seasons the championship had ever seen. He then had a fabulous year in 2010, winning the Supermono-450 Shoot out and beating some of Europes best Supermono riders in the process. He also finished second in the Aprilia RRV450GP championship and third in the Thundersport GP2 championship, making him the most successful rider in the whole series that year. Last year he followed that up with second place in the Aprilia RRV450

championship and he won the Thundersport GP2 championship with four races to spare. His season this year is set out around learning the 600cc Suzuki and developing his career on a four cylinder machine. His results so far have been impressive and he will do his usual trick of getting inexorably faster and faster as the season goes on. The number 100 express is heading for the front of the pack and will be part of the end of season shoot out as usual.

All of these young men and many more in all classes sacrifice the other luxuries in life to feed their need for speed and we look forward to seeing their careers progress, knowing that we have helped them in some small way.

the start/Finish straightOn a Supersport bike I’ll cross the line at around 160mph in fifth gear and be moving to the left of the track ready for the first corner which is the entrance to Gerard’s, the 180 degree right hander goes on for ages. I’ll start to scrub a little speed before using front and rear brakes and downshifting to third gear for the entry to the corner at around 90mph. As soon as you see the inside of the corner you have something to tip in and aim for.

gerard’s - entrancePerhaps the most famous corner in Britain and you won’t find many riders or fans who haven’t heard of it. Crucially the new surface has helped level the big bump at the braking point, which would upset the handling right at the entrance to the corner. It is still there,

but a lot less noticeable and means you can enter the corner much faster than before. The bike is happier and you don’t need to brake as hard, so the front is under less load than before. In third gear I try to stick around one-third of the way in from the white line and hold it there.

gerard’s mid-cornerI’ll wind on the power on as soon as I’m are in the corner and at around the midway point I’ll snick up to fourth gear at approximately 120mph. Keep increasing the throttle up to about 50% as you go through the second half of the corner and again - thanks to the new surface - there is plenty of feel through the bike about what’s going on beneath you. The one thing the new surface does now though, is make your markers harder

to determine. There used to be a surface change and, as you came to it, you knew you were approaching the exit: now you have to do it on gut feeling and have a better understanding of whereabouts you are on the track.

gerard’s exitThe exit is quite difficult as there is a massive bump coming onto the Stebbe straight. This is created by the chicane demanded by BSB and at the join, the distinct bump upsets both the front and rear of the bike. Take that at around 50% throttle and as soon as your bike settles down you can immediately pin it 100% throttle when going for the exit.

“Last year I used Mallory Park as a test track to set up my bike as part of the weekly Wednesday General Testing for competitors and license holders. This weekly General Testing is a real benefit for competitors in the UK and you’ll find most riders from all levels and teams will visit Mallory Park throughout the year to fine tune set-up or test new settings or parts. The lap record on a Superbike is 51.271 seconds for the 1.39

mile circuit – this uses Edwina’s and the Bus Stop but (thankfully) not the special chicane introduced for British Superbikes some years ago. This is a fantastic track with the 180 degree Gerard’s corner, a real icon in British racing - it is a truly great feeling when you get it right too! A well balanced bike is crucial for Mallory Park and requires quite a firm set up, as the suspension is under load for much of the lap. The new surface that

was laid in January is a big improvement, the track flows a little better now and many of the large bumps have been ironed out, there is plenty of grip and the whole surface is more consistent to offer plenty of feedback. It’s also better around the Hairpin area where some of the surface had been dug up over the years by rear sets and the like, it could easily catch you out, but it’s now vastly improved.

stebbe straightHold fourth gear as you pick the bike up out of Gerard’s and keep it there as you drift across from left to right on the track. As the bike comes upright, the revs steady, build with acceleration and you snick into fifth. This is the fastest point on the track and Edwina’s comes up real fast! Knock it down a three cogs to second on the 600 (some people may choose to go right down to first depending on their gearing choice) as you approach the corner, reducing speed from 150mph to about 60mph.

edWina’sThe left corner entry is tight, sharp, tricky and there are two ways to deal with it. Either enter fast and exit slow or enter slow and exit faster. I prefer to enter a little slower and keep tight to the left on entry, allowing an easier change of direction right, which sets up the bike for a nice curved arc out, rather than a sharp exit. This is smoother, faster, you can get on the gas much sooner and there’s less chance of a highside crash (very common at this corner). I’m confident making the left hand element of the chicane tighter, allows me to exit the right hander with so much more drive and I’m sure it contributes to fastest lap times. »

essesAs soon as you are out of Edwina’s, it’s up to third and then a short shift into fourth before you get to the Esses. I tend to roll off the throttle entering the corner – but keep it at about 20% and then steadily wind it up as I go through the direction change from right to left. Turning into the left-hander you are opening the throttle right to the stop and aiming for the kerb on the left of the exit. You can run over this because it has so much grip, it acts like a catapult shooting the revs up and now you’re hurtling towards the Hairpin at well over 120mph.

hairpinOn the approach you should try to stay as far to the left as possible. The braking is a lot easier on the left hand side as it is flat, grippy and opens up the correct right hand entry of Shaws Hairpin to the maximum. You can still feel a bit of a rise because of a tree root under the track and that’s a good marker for you to start pressuring the front and rear

brakes very heavily to break speed from 140-150mph to 30mph and down the box to first gear. You then drop into the Hairpin at the very last moment using the banking that is positively cambered to keep your speed up as much as you dare. You can’t go for a tight entrance, as it is nearly impossible to get the bike turned and apex the corner effectively. In fact if you go too slow through this corner, then you may lean the bike too far, rapidly unload the forks and risk losing the front end.

the bUs stopOut of the hairpin, short shift to second. The Bus Stop chicane is very tight with Vallelunga curves so you need to stay alert. Take the weight off the front and run through in second gear, gently picking up the throttle and keeping it steady on the way out. Don’t be tempted to accelerate or brake through this corner, keeping consistent is without doubt the fastest way through it.

the deVil’s elboWI really like the Devil’s Elbow - it needs a lot of feel to get right as it is a descending, off-camber corner that is critical to the lap as it leads on to the start/finish straight and it’s easy to get out of shape here. You go from second to third and then rev out before clicking into fourth, but as you do, you need to roll off just a little and aim for the inside of the corner as it is banked and offers more grip for extra speed. It also means a shorter lap! I have seen a lot of people run wide here but that makes for a longer loop and a slower lap time. Then you’re back on to the start / finish straight and onto the next perfect lap!”

the historyMallory Park is handily based in the middle of the country, with around 80% of the population within a two hour drive, making it popular for track days and club racing. It operates events around 35 weekends of the year, including The Race Of The Year and the famous Plum Pudding car and bike races on Boxing Day. It started out as a Pony Trotting track in the 1940s before moving to Grass Track Racing in 1951 and the first Tarmac event – a bike race - was on May 13th 1956. Now it has developed into a major UK circuit and is well known as the Friendly Circuit thanks to the helpful and open approach from the staff and marshals.

Race SeRieS aprilia rrv450Gp challenGe

The germ of the idea for the series was planted nearly four years ago when the Aprilia SXV Supermotard 450 was first looked at as an alternative to the single cylinder Moto 450 project. IN Competition’s Ian Newton saw its potential as the ideal middle-weight sportsbike that could fill the void left by the demise of the extremely popular and capable Aprilia RS250, which had effectively been killed off by the new European emission controls.

IN Competition run the very successful Aprilia Superteen Challenge, the series that has seen many talented riders pass through its doors, including Cal Crutchlow, Casey Stoner, Leon Camier, Danny Webb, Leon Haslam, Chaz Davies and Bradley Smith.

“The SXV450 is a lovely bike, with a very compact and powerful V-twin engine and we realised that with some adaption, we could use it to fill the gap between Superteens and Superstock 600. I really wanted to do something in this area, because I’ve seen too many kids get demotivated by this jump in race class” Ian explains “It seems counter-intuitive in some cases and it’s always an expensive leap without proper grounding in riding a four-stroke.”

That’s quite a claim, but the leap from a humble production two-stroke 125 to a sophisticated four-stroke 600 is a big one in terms of both race craft and budget, so it seems logical to develop a race series that provides a more gradual step up the ladder.

Dealing with youngsters carries huge responsibilities though and simply building a brand new concept bike and letting young riders loose on it isn’t the responsible way forward. So Ian built a prototype machine from an SXV550 (the 450s big brother) as a working test bed. After one year’s race development, the bike won the Thundersport GP2 Championship, ridden by experienced test pilot Rob Elsmere.

It is clear that a lot of time, effort and hard cash has been spent on making this into a safe and secure series, fit for the very best up and coming youngsters.

One of the things thrown up by this development year was that it wasn’t just youngsters who were interested in a viable and competitive middleweight class. This year’s entry is comprised of about 80% teenagers and 20% more mature racers.

So what’s the appeal for the older guys? Well, there are, of course, riders out there who want to race a more pure race-bred bike – like those used to racing 250GP bikes who hanker for ultimate corner speed without the risks associated with sitting atop a 200bhp fire-breathing monster. There are also those who want to race a bike with a robust engine that

doesn’t eat its way through too many tyres at each round and those who just, frankly, love the look of the RRV450!

This mixed appeal should work out well as it means youngsters can learn from older riders as they get to race in the same class, together. This is not the case with Superteens which by its very nature limits the upper age to 18 so there’s less opportunity to quiz older racers about set up and kit.

The RRV450 Challenge is a well-supported class, benefiting from the extensive list of suppliers and sponsors that IN Competition have built up relationships with over the past 16 years. The cost of the bike and spare parts is subsidised by Aprilia UK, Bridgestone provide tyres at cost and podium prizes at each round, as do Silkolene in the lubricant department. All of this helps to keep a lid on running costs.

As a result, it’s a remarkably affordable series. The race bike itself costs £9,000 + VAT complete with Marchesini lightweight wheels plus the original SXV wheels to use for wet tyres. On top of this, a hop-up package consisting of STM slipper clutch and Maxton Fork Internals, is available as an option for £999 + VAT. Ian reckons that entry fees and a season’s supply of tyres come in at an additional £4,000. That’s allowing for one set of tyres per round, which is more than enough as the bikes are extremely light and don’t crucify the rubber like the Supersport 600 machines the tyres are designed for.

So what do you get for your nine large?Well, the bikes start life as Aprilia SXV 450

Supermoto machines and use the original frame, swing arm, chassis, electronics and engine, which are modified for road racing in the race shop. The sub frame, fairing bracket, top and bottom yoke, rear sets and tank are hand-made to an uncompromising high standard in the race shop by Scott and Stinson Engineering to convert it to a race bike. Each of the conversion parts are polished and engraved to add to the ‘bling’ factor. Ian admits that one of his pet hates is seeing a race bike that isn’t properly finished; “When one of my bikes rolls out of the race shop, it has to look as though it’s ready to line up on a Grand Prix grid, nothing less is acceptable.”

The front fork legs are from an Aprilia RS 125 modified to suit this application. The front and rear master cylinders, front and rear brake callipers and single front and rear discs are a combination of genuine Aprilia parts from various models designed to give the bike plenty of stopping power and feedback. The rear linkage is also a bespoke piece that marries up nicely with the Maxton rear shock. Another aim of the series is to provide an environment where riders can learn about set up, so whilst the engine, frame and chassis are fixed and cannot be altered, the suspension is fully adjustable. The bike is easy enough to ride even on base settings. Maxton, the suspension specialists, have

been heavily involved in the series from the outset and have made and supplied the whole suspension package.

Maxton don’t just provide the equipment for all the bikes, the racers also get their valuable advice too. So there’s a great opportunity to get to grips with the fine art of adjusting suspension on a bike that’s easy to ride and where improvements (or otherwise) are easy for the rider to identify, as there aren’t lots of other settings that can be messed with!

At first glance the RRV450 looks like a baby RSV4 from some angles and very similar to a Moto2 Grand Prix machine from others. Either way it always attracts a second glance, no matter who’s looking. The front fairing is actually a modified RSV4 unit, the petrol tank cover and rear seat unit is a one piece item fashioned in the modern GP style and there’s a MotoGP-style stubby seat unit.

Whilst from some angles the bike might be reminiscent of a CRT machine, there is a significant difference – it weighs in at just 118kg and makes 64 bhp, so it’s quick off-the-mark, agile in the twisty bits, stops on a sixpence and is a beautiful looking machine.

Ian Newton’s motto is ‘Keep It Simple’ and so the rules and regs covering what you can and can’t do to the bike are very straightforward and not open to liberal interpretation. The first year had its challenges - as you would expect in the inaugural season of any race series. The original bike’s rear suspension is set up for a lot more travel than you’d ever want on a road race machine and getting the original set up to cope proved to be a compromise that Ian insisted on eliminating. Therefore a new bespoke part was commissioned and developed and subsequently fitted to all machines. The bikes were extremely competitive right from the start and as the riders progressed through the year they became the dominant force and by the end of that first season, they had taken over the entire front half of the grid.

In 2011 as a stand alone series it provided some of the most exceptional racing anywhere at any level. For 2012 it really is THE place to be if you’re a youngster intent on making a career of racing in the modern four-stroke era.

The series will run at 9 Thundersport GB race meetings again this year and Ian is hugely appreciative of the club’s support; “Thundersport GB is now an internationally recognised series with excellent organisation and promotion and getting aspirational people into the sport is an absolute priority.” The biggest challenge in getting more entries leading up to the start of the season was the lack of availability of new bikes as the Italian factory struggle to keep pace with demand for its highly desirable range of bikes.

The factory has now produced a new consignment of SXV450s and the race shop is geared up to produce more bikes as more riders sign up. Several current Superteen competitors are now just developing their skills in preparation for their future

advancement into this class, so that they can begin their four-stroke progression!
