Austria declared war on Serbia Russia attackedOn July the 28, 1914, one month to the day afterArchduke Franz Ferdinand ofAustria and hiswife was killed by a Serbian nationalist inSarajevo.

The weapons they used were rifles, machineguns, tanks andplanes.

On the ]StofAugust 1914 four daysafter Austria-Hungary had declaredwar on Siberia, Germany declaredwar on Russia. As the sun rose two

serious demands were made byGermany. On the 3]stofJuly 1914 at19:00, Germany asked ifFrancewould stay out of the waiç ifGermany and Russia went to war.They wanted an answer by 13.00 thenext day (18 hours later). Two dayslater Germany declared war onFrance.

Germany declares war on France and

invades Belgium

On the 3rd of August 1914 Germany declared war on

France and invaded Belgium. They did this because

they wanted to implement the Schlieffen plan. The

Schlieffen plan is a tactic that Germany had been

planning long before 1914. German men crossed the

Belgian frontier and attacked Liege. This created the

battle of Liege. They advanced to Liege in a right

flanking move which was designed to defeat the

French - as a result of this Britain declared war on

Germany.

23 August 1914

On the 23rd August 1914 Japan (atthe time led by OkumaShigenobu) joined World War 1 onthe side of the allied forces. Theyjoined the war to get more money(as they knew the aLlies wouldwin), they thought they wouldkeep seized enemy positions andthey had a treaty with Britain in1902. Their most important rolein the war was seizing the sealanes.

On the 5th of July, Kaiser Wilhelmpromised the Germans that hewould support Austria againstSerbia. The promise Kaiser madewas an important moment leadingup to the outbreak of World War 1.

Turkey joins GermanyOn the 29t1 of October 1914 Turkey

joined Germany because they wantedrevenge on the Balkans for their defeat inthe Balkan war. They were also enemies ofBritain and Russia because Britain andRussia did not allow Turkey oil. On theof November 1914 Russia declared war onTurkey and on the 5’ of November Britainand France declared war on Turkey. Thisis how Turkey came to participate in thewar in the central powers.

On Christmas eve all of the soldiersstopped fighting and sang carols. Theyalso played games and they were friendsover Christmas. They did all of this onNo man’s land. No man’s land is a placeof peace and quiet. On no man’s landthey placed all the dead bodies. It wascalled No man’s land because it does notbelong to anyone. On Christmas daythey heard the German trench singingto a band. Also the Germans andBritain’s went to No man’s land to playsome football. After Christmas day theywent back to their trenches to have waragain.

In order to fight the war, the U.S. hadto mobilize an army. World War 1was also known as ‘The Great War’.When Germany began violatingneutral rights, the issue was life anddeath. The British began to preparetheir plan of attack which began inearly April 1917. The United Statesjoined the allies in 1917.

21st March 1918Germany launches a major offensive onthe Western Front to win the warbefore the US arrive.

On 8th of August 1918, Britain and theirallies pushed Germany into retreat.There is a code name for the retreat{Black day of the German army).Britain and their allies set off a series ofexplosives to force the Germans to gointo retreat. Because of all theexplosives the bulk of the Germans wereinjured and killed. On this day in 1918the allies launched a series of offensiveoperations against Germany.

August 8th 1918

On August 8th 1918 the battle ofAmiens began. The allies triedto push the enemy back. Thisevent was later described asthe black day of the Germanarmy. The plan was to attackthe enemy in a “big push” andeventually break through theHindenburg line (which was theGerman defensive line). By theend of the battle Germany hadretreated and signed thearmistice that signalled the endof thewar.

8th of August 1918

Germany retreatOn the 8th of August 1918 the Allied

powers push Germany into retreat. It wasknown as the “black day of the Germanarmy.” The second battle of Ameinsbegins. Thousands of the Germanssurrender. The German trenches arebreached. Canadian and Australian troops(plus 600 tanks) shatter German forcesand reach the Hindenburg line. (TheHindenburg line was a German defensiveposition of world war 1). The German menretreat.

Germany was defeated in latesummer. The Germans had builtthe world’s largest artillery gunand they used it for fighting theother countries. By June 1918, theGerman Army had been severelyweakened by the large number ofcasualties.
