Introduction

Manufacturer: Piper Aircraft Maiden flight: Nearly 60 years ago during 1949. Production was from 1949 to1983 and then from 1988 till 1994.

The Piper PA18 "Super Cub" is a twoseat, singleengine light utility aircraft. It was developed from earlier Piper PA11 and traces its lineage back through the J3 to the Taylor E2 Cub of the 1930's.

Three years after it stopped building J3s, Piper introduced the PA18 Super Cub. This design which is also a tandem tail dragger with fabric covering but fitted with flaps, an O290 Lycoming, 135 hp engine and an electric starter was regarded as the perfection of the J3 Cub. Well over 9000 Super Cubs were sold over the years.

Super Cubs are commonly found in roles such as bush flying, banner and glider towing, and other situations in which short field performance is required. These aircraft can takeoff in about 400 feet and land in about 300 feet thanks to the huge “barn door size” flaps.

The highlift wing and powerful engine also made the Super Cub a prime candidate for conversion to either ski or float plane.

Today, the Super Cub is still manufactured as the PA18 "Top Cub" from Cub Crafters in Yakima, Washington. Many enthusiasts all over the world also tackle it as “home build” projects. Tanks to them we will hopefully see Super Cubs dancing in the clouds for many years to come.

Specifications (PA18150): Length: 22 ft 7 in (6.88 m) Wingspan: 35 ft 3 in (10.74 m) Empty weight: 983 lb (446 kg) Loaded weight: 1750 lb (794 kg) Power plant: Lycoming O320 flat four, 150 hp (112 kW) Cruise speed: 100 kts (120 mph, 180 km/h) Range: 400 nmi (460 mi, 740 km) Service ceiling 19,000 ft (5,800 m) Rate of climb: 960 ft/min

Installation

Installation is relatively easy. Actually, chances are that when you read this, you’ve already DONE IT! Just to reiterate what happens then: You start the ‘installer’ It will find your FSX installation (unless you have changed something, then you will need to point the installer to the PATH where you have installed FSX) The installer will make (or find an existing) FSceneDN folder within your FSX folder and move the necessary files into it Inside that FSceneDN folder you will also find this manual.

Uninstalling

We can’t imagine you would want to uninstall what you just bought, but just in case you need to, here is how:

Click on Start (bottom left of your windows screen) Click on Programs Find the FSceneDN product title (you may have more) Find the appropriate ‘Uninstall’ and click on it

That’s it.

THE PIPER SUPER CUB “TOP CUB” 150HP FOR

FSX ACCELERATION, FSX REGULAR AND FS9

The Flight simulator model is based on the “Top Cub”. The “blue prints” of the real world full size Super Cub were as far as possible used in the design this model. This package contains the following four versions:

Wheels for land surface operations. Ski’s for snow surfaces as well as dry land operations. Floats for water surface operations. Tundra Tires for soft surface operations.

Inside the cockpit

The model was designed to be operated from the virtual cockpit. However a 2d panel is available for those who prefer it.

Let us take look at the office:

Aircraft Operation

The gauges and radios on the main panel are pretty much straight forward light aircraft things so we will not discuss their operations in this manual. If you do have a need to know more about these gauges please consult the Flight Simulator Learning Center.

The following engine and aircraft management procedures for this Super Cub are however important to point out:

Cold start up

By default the engine will be running. The cold Start up procedure is as follows: Master Battery Switch (on right hand wing root switch panel) = ON. All other switches= OFF (if on too much current drain can occur which will make it difficult for the engine to “light up”). Throttle= full aft. Mixture (on main panel) = Full in. Fuel Selector Switch (left hand side) = select BOTH. Push Starter Button (on main panel – yes that big red thing)

You can operate the starter button in two ways. 1= with the mouse wheel or 2= left click and drag to the left. Sometimes it might take a few attempts to get her going but Cubs are like that. Still trying? Keep on practicing it must take! No luck? Try a squirt or two fuel using the primer. Alright there she came alive, good!

Note: If you find it too difficult to start using the above procedure, use the “Ctrl + E” from the key board.

Right, now you can switch on all necessary goodies while she warms up (not her man, I’m talking about the Cub!).

Taxiing

Okay, you got taxi clearance, release the parking brakes, and push the throttle slightly forward – not too much as that big McCauley prop in front is moving a lot of air. Taxi speed is at a good walking past. You can’t see clear over the panel so “snake” is the way to go. Keep the stick in your stomach while taxing to keep that tail wheel on the ground. If you don’t do it, she (the Cub) will lift her tail very quickly. While you are busy with all of this make sure the trim indicator is centered for takeoff. Don’t lower the flaps while taxing because she will become too light on her feet.

Takeoff

Right! There is your takeoff clearance….no! no! you don’t have to take off anything…all they said is we can take to the sky! Put her nose into the wind… Keep the stick back…Give her (the Cub) gas….and off you go! While on the takeoff roll use the rudder to keep her lined up with the centre

Page 13: By Simon Smeiman - simMarketonline.simmarket.com/fsaddon/topcub/TopCub_Manual.pdf · 2008-10-17 · By Simon Smeiman Published as ... Levers on pilot left hand side all versions (fig.3):

line. Ease the stick forward just enough to raise the tail. Now you can see the runway clearly in front of you.

Watching the Air Speed Indicator, you can rotate at 60 mph without flaps. With flaps it’s a sudden affair…that high lift wing combined with flaps I mean. While on the flaps subject…this Cub has a 4 setting (0% up, 30%, 66% and 100% full lowered) manual operated flap system. The flap lever (fig.3) can be operated from the virtual cockpit by the normal click and drag thing or mouse wheel or key board or flaps button on the joystick.

Climb out and cruising

During the climb out you can adjust the trim setting as you prefer. Just be aware that at full throttle setting she will keep on climbing.

Cubs were not made for super sonic flight so don’t cruise full throttle. She is very forgiving but she will run away with you if you abuse her too much (we are still discussing the Cub here).

Cruising with this Cub is around 2200 rpm at 100 mph or so. At this speed the trim setting should be more or less centered for a nice steady and level flight.

Very slow flying with full flaps is around 50mph. She will stall at speeds lower than 40 mph.

Landing

Coming down for a landing is straight forward and easy with these Cubs. Just watch your speed during the decent. Don’t let the speed build up – keep her around 6570 mph. When lowering the flaps be prepared…she pitches nosedown. Lined up with the runway, control her sink rate using the throttle. The ideal is to be at around 5560 mph at touch but not slower than 50mph. Pulling the stick back just before the wheels touches the ground will result in a nice 3pointer.

Takeoff and landing on water is also something that these Cubs (the float version) are good at. You will get the hang of it in no time. Just take note of the following:

Make sure the water rudders are retracted before takeoff and landing. When taxing on water use the water rudders and play with the throttle and wind from the prop on the rudder to steer her in the right direction.

Engine Sounds

The engine sounds are recordings from a real PA18 and includes a stereo effect.

Animations and Features

Besides the normal throttle, elevator, rudder, flaps and aileron animations, these Cubs have the following additional animations and special features:

Pilot

Animated head, arms and legs.

Cowl Doors (fig.6):

FSX Acceleration: Use the spoiler command (“/”) on the key board to open both cowl doors to reveal the detailed Lycoming engine.

FSX Regular and FG9: Use the WING FOLD command (I assigned “shift+c) on the key board to open both cowl doors to reveal the detailed Lycoming engine.

Passenger Doors (fig.7 & 8):

The wheels versions have a solid lower door. The other two versions have a glazed lower door. The passenger doors is opened and closed with the “SHIFT+E” command (upper door) and “SHIFT+E + 2” command (lower door).

Window and Cabin Ventilation

Pulling or pushing the Cabin Vent Lever on the vc main panel (item 16, fig.1) will open or close the Cabin Vent just in front of the windshield (fig.9) and also the left hand window (fig.10). The left hand window has a handle that can also be clicked and dragged up or down to open and close the window and the vent.

(fig.9) (fig.10)

Elevator Trim

Turning the elevator trim handle (fig.3) will actually move the stabilizer up and down like in the real aircraft.

(fig.11) (fig.12)

Note that when the stabilizer is in the up position (fig. 11), the aircraft pitch nosedown and visa versa (fig. 12). See also the markings on the trim indicator plate when in the virtual cockpit.

Landing and taxi lights on left hand wing leading edge: Operated with the appropriate switches on the switch panel (fig.2).

Nav lights and rotating beacon (fig.2): Operated with the appropriate switches on the switch panel.

Cabin light (fig.2): Operated with the Panel light switch on the switch panel.

Avionics master switch (fig.2): Turn the power to the radios on or off. The radios do not function with this switch in the off position.

Comm 1 radio (item12, fig.1): Can be turned on or off with the on/off button on the radio. This radio is linked to the Nav 122 radio (item 13, fig.1) on the main panel.

Transponder (item19, fig.1): Is always on. Squawk code can be tuned with the four frequency buttons.

Fuel gauges (fig.2): These Cubs have an 18 gallons fuel tank in each main wing. A total of 36 gallons will take you about 450 miles or just over 700 km, far. The fuel gauges (one mounted on each inside wing root and directly connected to the fuel tank) is gravity based and show the actual fuel level in the tanks through glass tubes.

With the fuel tank selector switch (item3, fig.3) you can select which fuel tank to use. However because the Cub is so very light using one tank at a time will result in bank to the heavier side. You will experience the effect doing so.

Cubs are normally flown with both tanks selected. The “both” setting is between the “left” and “right” markings on the fuel tank selector indicator face plate. Selecting “off” will cut the fuel supply to the carburetor and kill the engine.

Main landing gear:

(fig.13) (fig.14) The landing gear is fully animated for movement in all directions.

The wheels versions (fig.13) have a soft dampening for rough field operation and when air born shows off that “hanging” undercarriage attitude.

Page 17: By Simon Smeiman - simMarketonline.simmarket.com/fsaddon/topcub/TopCub_Manual.pdf · 2008-10-17 · By Simon Smeiman Published as ... Levers on pilot left hand side all versions (fig.3):

The ski version (fig.14) has harder dampening to provide a level ski surface for landing on snow surfaces.

Snow ski animation:

(fig.15) (fig.16) (fig.17)

The snow skis are raised (fig. 15) and lowered (fig. 16) with the ski lever in the vc cockpit (fig.4), or by using the “SHIFT+W” command from the key board. The ski actions are pneumatically driven as follows: When lowering, the actuator (that big red soda can) mounted on the ski will first lower the ski then push a cover into place underneath the wheel (fig.17) to provide more ski area for landing on snow (or is it to keep the tires warm, Shumi).

Raising the skis has the opposite actions. Make sure that the skis are retracted for hard surface landings.

Water rudder animation:

(fig.18) (fig.19)

The water rudder lever (fig.5) in the vc cockpit deploys (fig.18) or deploys (fig. 19) the water rudder at the rear of the floats. You can also use the “SHIFT+W” command from the key board to action this animation.

The water rudders are connected to the rudder with control cables so the steering is through the rudder pedals.

To protect the water rudders it must be in the retracted position for takeoff and landing.

Conclusion

Well, that’s it!

I did some South Africa scenery for FS9 before but this is my very first aircraft design project for Flight Simulator.

I started with it as a fun project for FS9 during December 2007, just to learn the modeling program (Flight Sim Design Studio). I became so involved with it the more I learned about the program that I decided to go all the way and develop a model that resembles the real thing as close as possible and with as much animations I’m able to replicate.

Well, after about 1800 hours (that’s not a miss print) I am proud to present to you this model.

A repaint kit is also included for those who want to reskin.

I want to thank you for your interest in this little aircraft for Flight Simulator and hope you have all the fun and enjoyment in the world with her.

About FScene Design Network

Because we know that addon products have become increasingly expensive over the past few years due to an increasing complexity in development and an increasingly demanding market – we decided to found this ‘affiliate’ of Silver Cloud Publishing (to which also FSAddon Publishing belongs). The idea was to provide a separate ‘brand name’ with products focused on the lower end of the market.

In simple terms: more affordable products!

Reducing the price of products in this industry can only be done through a couple of ways (apart from just giving things away, a.k.a. freeware, which we actually also do at times). That means we either have to reduce production cost OR the authors have to accept lower revenue.

We do both. The production cost are lowered by not providing the same high level of documentation and other ‘good looking’ stuff to go alongside the actual software, and by providing less complex products thus reducing development efforts and time. That does NOT mean the production quality is any less, but obviously you get a little less complex products and less detail.

And we use ‘new’ authors who are starting in this business, who have things to learn and who have not yet made such a name for themselves in the commercial arena. Therefore they can and will accept lower fees to start with.

The idea is that this works both ways. Less costly products for the (perhaps starting) ‘FS consumer’ and a chance for new talent to get their feet wet in the difficult world of commercial FS addons. We hope you like our formula and the products we’ll provide under it.

About FSAddon Publishing

Since you've come this far, you must be a diehard simmer, or at least an avid reader. Congratulations on your perseverance, not many people read manuals at all ;) To reward you, let me tell you something about our companies then…..

The FScene Design Network was an idea of Ruud Faber and yours truly. We thought it was a good idea to help developers new to the commercial world of making and selling addons AND to provide a somewhat cheaper ‘brand’ with entrylevel addons and prices. Ruud kindly offered to use the name if his well known brand, FScene !

The FScene Design Network hence is the little sister of FSAddon Publishing, and both are owned by Silver Cloud Publishing, François Dumas’s privately owned company.

FSAddon.com was founded by Miguel Blaufuks and François Dumas with the main purpose of designing and publishing addons for the Microsoft Flight Simulator range of products. But not just any addons!

Page 21: By Simon Smeiman - simMarketonline.simmarket.com/fsaddon/topcub/TopCub_Manual.pdf · 2008-10-17 · By Simon Smeiman Published as ... Levers on pilot left hand side all versions (fig.3):

Our aim is to provide additional immersion for the simulation by providing highquality, complete packages or series that do more than just add an airfield, a utility or an aircraft. We are aiming to provide ‘reality kits’ that are a combination of additional FS software AND other things such as a story line, navigational information and tools, or even community access via the Internet.

We are also convinced that most buyers of these flight simulators only scratch the tip of the proverbial iceberg and won't use more than perhaps 10% of its capabilities. Another goal of ours therefore is providing education and information geared towards better and more satisfying usage of what you have already bought!

The company is affiliated with the wellknown company simMarket, which in turn is part of the associated simFlight Network. SimMarket is the world largest online distributor of flight simulator addons. But up to now all products have been sold under their own name and without any (or much) guidance from simMarket.

The simFlight Network consists of a multitude of flight simulator news sites, covering many languages and areas around the world, and also hosting a large number of flight simulator user communities via forums and other means. The two organizations together form a very powerful base for the newly founded FSAddon.com, providing all the basic infrastructure, skills and contacts needed to design, develop and publish flight simulator addons.

The company’s aim is 3tiered

1) To substantially expand the possibilities for beginning simpilots to use their flight simulator 2) To provide highquality, extensive addons to the more experienced simpilots 3) To lower the thresholds for communicating and flying together using flight simulators and the internet.

We hope you'll enjoy our products, and above all, the pleasure of sharing this hobby with us and the hundreds of thousands of likeminded enthusiasts all over the world. If we can add just a little value to it, then we have achieved our goal.
