Introduction

Manufacturer: Piper AircraftMaiden flight: Nearly 60 years ago during 1949.Production was from 1949 to1983 and then from 1988 till 1994.

The Piper PA-18 "Super Cub" is a two-seat, single-engine light utility aircraft. It was developed fromearlier Piper PA-11 and traces its lineage back through the J-3 to the Taylor E-2 Cub of the 1930's.

Three years after it stopped building J-3s, Piper introduced the PA-18 Super Cub. This design whichis also a tandem tail dragger with fabric covering but fitted with flaps, an O-290 Lycoming, a 135 hpengine and an electric starter was regarded as the perfection of the J-3 Cub. Well over 9000 SuperCubs were sold over the years.

Super Cubs are commonly found in roles such as bush flying, banner and glider towing, and othersituations in which short field performance is required. These aircraft can take-off in about 400 feetand land in about 300 feet thanks to the huge “barn door size” flaps.

The high-lift wing and powerful engine also made the Super Cub a prime candidate for conversion toeither ski or float plane.

Today, the Super Cub is still manufactured as the PA-18 "Top Cub" from Cub Crafters in Yakima,Washington. Many enthusiasts all over the world also tackle it as “home build” projects. Tanks tothem we will hopefully see Super Cubs dancing in the clouds for many years to come.

Installation is relatively easy. Actually, chancesare that when you read this, you’ve alreadyDONE IT!

Just to re-iterate what happens: You start the ‘installer’ It will find your FSX installation (unless you have changed something, then you will need to

point the installer to the PATH where you have installed FSX) The installer will make (or find an existing) FSAddon folder within your FSX folder and move

the necessary files into it Inside that FSAddon folder you will also find this manual. It will copy all aircraft files to the FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes folder

Uninstalling

We can’t imagine you would want to uninstall what you just bought, but just in case you need to, hereis how:

Click on Start (bottom left of your windows screen) Click on Programs Find the FSAddon product title (you may have more) Find the appropriate ‘Uninstall’ and click on it

That’s it.

Inside the cockpit

The model is designed to be operated from the virtual cockpit and there is no 2D cockpit provided.

You will be hard pressed to find two Super Cub cockpits that are exactly identical. They are allunique. Some have simple panels with only the most essential flight instruments. Others have squaremodern panels. Then there are some with flight instruments cluttered all over the panel and so it goeson.

In fact, we have included FOUR different basic panels with our collection, Simple, Cluttered withstarter, Cluttered with push button starter and Square with key starter and switches.

Basically they all have the same functionality (upon availability of switches etc.), and are the same asour previous Cub model. So let’s show you the basic functions you can find in most of the models, using the schema below:

As we said earlier there are many different configurations and cockpit layouts so please familiarizeyourself with the cockpit of your aircraft before you take off. Look closely (zoom in) at everythingaround you in the cockpit. Make sure you know where the switches, primer, mixture, starter, magnetos, trims and other levers are. Also check what flight instruments are available and where theyare situated.

About every lever, knob, switch and handle in these cockpits are functional and can be operatedeither by mouse click, drag or mouse wheel. Familiarize yourself with their operations otherwise youwill lose it during busy times in the office!

Other features regarding the gauges and avionics:

The RPM gauge also indicates engine hours. The Artificial Horizon Indicator can be caged and the “wings” can be set higher or lower. The heading bug in the Directional Indicator can be set. The radios and transponder can be tuned. The NAV122 Receiver will only function if tuned to the correct airport frequency. You can also

listen to the airport id in Morse code. The fuel gauges are mounted on the wing roots inside the cockpit. The fuel levels are visible

through the glass tubes of these gauges.

Virtual Cockpit polygon

The 3-D gauges cannot be changed. They are fixed parts of the model.

However, we are aware that some simmers like to use their own custom gauges in Flight Simulatormodels. For these simmers we have provided a “clean” Virtual Cockpit Polygon panel in eachmain panel onto which “picture” gauges can be projected.

To access this Virtual Cockpit Polygon and panel click with the mouse somewhere on the phone wiresockets near the left hand corner of the main panel.See the illustration below:

The 3-D Panel with gauges (top) is now replaced by a “clean” Virtual Cockpit Polygon panel (below)onto which you can place your own gauges. You can switch between the default 3-D Panel andgauges and Virtual Cockpit Polygon Panel as often as you like while in the Virtual Cockpit.

Aircraft Operation

The gauges and radios on the main panel are pretty much straight forward light aircraft things so wewill not discuss their operations in this manual. If you do have a need to know more about thesegauges please consult the Flight Simulator Learning Center.

The following engine and aircraft management procedures for this Super Cub are however importantto point out:

Starting and Shutting Down

The Super Cub you choose to fly will have either a push button or key starter.

By default the engine will be running. The cold starting procedure is as follows:

Master battery on. Recognition lights on. Mixture full in (rich). Fuel Tank selector - left tank. Magnetos both on (cockpit left side -push button starter version only) Prime as required. Click and drag push button left or right. For key starter version click and drag the key to start

position.

Shutting down the engine is by Pulling the mixture full out (lean). Magnetos switched off or the key to off position. All switches to off position. Leaving the switches on after shutting down will drain the battery

quick and you will find it difficult to cold start again.Note: If you find it too difficult to start using the above procedure, use the “Ctrl + E” from the keyboard.

Right, now you can switch on all necessary goodies while she warms up (not her man, I’m talkingabout the Cub!).

Taxiing

Okay, you got taxi clearance, release the parking brakes, and push the throttle slightly forward – nottoo much as that big McCauley prop in front is moving a lot of air. Taxi speed is at a good walkingpace. You can’t see clear over the panel so “snake” is the way to go. Keep the stick in your stomachwhile taxing to keep that tail wheel on the ground. If you don’t do it, she (the Cub) will lift her tail veryquickly. While you are busy with all of this make sure the trim indicator is centered for take-off. Don’tlower the flaps while taxiing because she will become too light on her feet.

Take-off

Right! There is your take-off clearance….no! no! you don’t have to take off anything…all they said iswe can take to the sky! Put her nose into the wind… Keep the stick back…Give her (the Cub)gas….and off you go! While on the take-off roll use the rudder to keep her lined up with the centreline. Ease the stick forward just enough to raise the tail. Now you can see the runway clearly in frontof you.

Watching the Air Speed Indicator, you can rotate at 60 mph without flaps. With flaps it’s a suddenaffair…that high lift wing combined with flaps I mean. While on the flaps subject…this Cub has a 4setting (0% -up, 30%, 66% and 100% - full lowered) manual operated flap system. The flap lever(fig.3) can be operated from the virtual cockpit by the normal click and drag thing or mouse wheel orkey board or flaps button on the joystick.

Climb out and cruising

During the climb out you can adjust the trim setting as you prefer. Just be aware that at full throttlesetting she will keep on climbing.

Cubs were not made for super sonic flight so don’t cruise full throttle. She is very forgiving but she willrun away with you if you abuse her too much (we are still discussing the Cub here).

Cruising with this Cub is around 2200 rpm at 100 mph or so. At this speed the trim setting should bemore or less centered for a nice steady and level flight.

Very slow flying with full flaps is around 50mph. She will stall at speeds lower than 40 mph.

Landing

Coming down for a landing is straight forward and easy with these Cubs. Just watch your speedduring the decent. Don’t let the speed build up – keep her around 65-70 mph. When lowering theflaps be prepared…she pitches nose-down. Lined up with the runway, control her sink rate using thethrottle. The ideal is to be at around 55-60 mph at touch but not slower than 50mph. Pulling the stickback just before the wheels touches the ground will result in a nice 3-pointer.

Take-off and landing on water is also something that these Cubs (the float version) are good at. Youwill get the hang of it in no time. Just take note of the following:

Make sure the water rudders are retracted before take-off and landing. When taxing on water use the water rudders and play with the throttle and wind from the prop on therudder to steer her in the right direction.

Engine Sounds

The engine sounds are recordings from a real PA18 and includes a stereo effect.

In closing

Well, this is it. A lot of features and detail packed into a small little Super Cub. There are more thingsbut we leave that up to you to discover!

This model was extensively tested and works well with Windows XP and Vista. We are prettyconfident that the model will function well on any computer capable of running Flight Simulator X atreasonable frame rates.

The following are known issues which are due to the Simulator itself or flaws in the SDK modeldefinition codes:

- The lights that appear to be out of place when viewed from some angles.

- Movement of the spinning prop not smooth.

- The fuel selector cannot be set to the “Off” position.

Feel free to contact us regarding other issues you might find. We will be glad to assist.

Thank you for your interest in this model. We trust that you will enjoy many happy flying hours withthe little Super Cub.

Time to fly! You will find ‘em all under “GFA Super Cub” in the Aircraft Select Menu. Remember toturn on “show all variants”.

Enjoy!

Simon

About FSAddon Publishing

Since you've come this far, you must be a die-hard simmer, or at least anavid reader. Congratulations on your perseverance, not many peopleread manuals at all ;-) To reward you, let me tell you something aboutour companies then…..

FSAddon Publishing is wholly owned by Silver Cloud Publishing, François Dumas’s privately ownedcompany.

FSAddon.com was founded by Miguel Blaufuks and François Dumas with the main purpose ofdesigning and publishing add-ons for the Microsoft Flight Simulator range of products. But not just any add-ons!Our aim was and is to provide additional immersion for the simulation by providing high-quality,complete packages or series that do more than just add an airfield, a utility or an aircraft. We areaiming to provide ‘reality kits’ that are a combination of additional FS software AND other things suchas a story line, navigational information and tools, or even community access via the Internet.

We are also convinced that most buyers of these flight simulators only scratch the tip of the proverbialiceberg and won't use more than perhaps 10% of its capabilities. Another goal of ours therefore isproviding education and information geared towards better and more satisfying usage of what youhave already bought!

The company is affiliated with the well-known company simMarket.com, which in turn is part of theassociated simFlight Network. SimMarket is the world largest on-line distributor of flight simulatoradd-ons. But up to now all products have been sold under their own name and without any (or much)guidance from simMarket.

The simFlight Network consists of a multitude of flight simulator news sites, covering many languagesand areas around the world, and also hosting a large number of flight simulator user communities viaforums and other means. The two organizations together form a very powerful base for the newly founded FSAddon.com,providing all the basic infrastructure, skills and contacts needed to design, develop and publish flightsimulator add-ons.

The company’s aim is 3-tiered

1) To substantially expand the possibilities for beginning simpilots to use their flight simulator2) To provide high-quality, extensive add-ons to the more experienced simpilots3) To lower the thresholds for communicating and flying together using flight simulators and theinternet.

We hope you'll enjoy our products, and above all, the pleasure of sharing this hobby with us and thehundreds of thousands of like-minded enthusiasts all over the world. If we can add just a little value toit, then we have achieved our goal.
