VFW POST 8118 VENICE, FLORIDA TAMIAMI MEMORIAL By the Gulf “There are no strangers here... ...Just friends you haven’t met” March / April 2016, #2 We lost a great person and our current chaplain, Vietnam Veteran and great friend Amedee Melanson, known by all simply as “Medee” on New Year’s day. You will be missed by all who knew you, RIP my friend and “brother”. It is hard to believe that 2 months have quickly passed in 2016. I hope the holidays went well for you, your family and friends. We have many things happening here at the post before our northern friends leave us to return home. The Post will have a St Patrick ’s Day party, Thursday March 17 th with the corn beef and cabbage dinner from 4:30-7:00 pm put on by the Auxiliary. Great food, as always, provided by our Auxiliary!! Tickets can be purchased at the Bar for only $15.00. Entertainment will be provided by Spotlight, Gil and Rhonda and maybe some surprise guests. It will be a filling and fun night, so “b wearing yur green”!! On Weds April 6 th we will have our Members, bartenders and volunteer appreciation day. $1.00 drafts all day, great food, raffle prizes and entertainment. A big Thank You to all who make Post 8118 a shining star in District 10 and the Department of Florida. For the next 3 regular post meetings, March-April-May we will be having a raffle, for anyone attending, of a $100.00 Ticket that will be entered at the VFW State Convention drawing in June for a final prize of $10,000.00. Come to the meeting and get involved. Post nominations begin at the March meeting and elections for Post officers will finalized at the April meeting. Come to the meetings! This Post needs volunteers for all functions. You want to en- joy the events, the great food and all but they just don’t happen by themselves. Spare a little time and contribute to your post, it won’t go unnoticed. Thank you for your support to Post 8118. Christopher Casey Commander 2015-2016 Spring is right around the corner. Thanks Amber, Roger and Brenda for the great meal. Rick and Pat did a great job with the 50-50 $190 to the winner. Decorations were awesome thanks to the decorating team. We were able to send $1000 to our Department President’s special project K9S for Warriors helping our heroes with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Team work works. Claire, Debbie Kay, Marty and I attended Midwinter Convention. We listened and learned a lot at the meetings. Please bear with us as we learn all the new rules and ways of doing things, as we become one Auxiliary. Our new Charter is hanging next to the old one in the hall. We now have 20 male members. We lost a great person and our current chaplain, Vietnam Veteran and great friend Amedee Melanson, known by all simply as “Medee” on New Year’s day. We are no longer accepting applications to the Men’s auxiliary at Post 8118. Please join the Auxiliary. If you haven’t renewed yet, please join the Auxiliary. Dues are $30/ yr. Submit eligibility with application.

Eagle scout scholarship applications are available at the Post and Rotary Futures office at Venice High School. For information contact Marty Wise II at 813-624-7378.

We are sponsoring another bus trip Saturday, March 19, to Veteran’s Village at Ft McCoy, near Ocala. This is a day trip to a BBQ with music, raffles and auctions. Bus will leave the Post parking lot at 9:30 am. and return by 7pm. Any one wanting to go needs a $10 ticket in hand or prepay $10 for ticket at canteen to board the 47 passenger bus. BYOB on bus. Look for sign-up sheet at Post or call Marty at 813-624-7378.

All present VFW members share a unique bond with not only Veterans of oversea conflicts, but also with those who wear our country”s uniform. We must make every effort to inform these returning Veterans of the VFW and their many projects and en-courage them to join us as VFW members. Some of the immediate advantages are the camaraderie and fellowship that comes with joining the nations largest Combat Veterans group, but also the knowledge and aid the VFW can offer Veterans in securing benefits they are due for their heroic service. In addition,VFW members insurance and health care plan advice can be explained as well as having direct contact with the VFW Service Officer, who aid in obtaining deserved aid.

Membership dues can be yearly or life memberships can be ar-ranged with a 12-month installment plan. Eligibility requirements are U.S. citizens who serve honorably in the Armed Services in an oversea conflict.

This VFW Post 8118 operates a canteen where members and guests can meet and enjoy various activities with their families and friends. This canteen offers food and beverage service at reasonable rates.

We have the VFW Auxiliary and Men’s Auxiliary, in which rela-tives of Veterans can join with the VFW and enjoy the camarade-rie and participate in the various activities.

Membership Information

Florida State Parks Annual Entrance Pass information provides a 25 percent discount on annual passes to Florida State Parks for all honorably discharged veterans, active-duty service and reserve members. The discount provides a savings of $15 on an individual annual pass and $30 on a family annual pass, which allows up to eight people in a group to access most of Florida’s 160 state parks. Honorably discharged veterans who have service connected disabilities, and surviving spouses of military veterans who have fallen in combat, will receive a lifetime family annual entrance pass at no charge. The discount Florida Parks Annual Entrance Pass is available for purchase and renewal at any Florida State Park staffed ranger station or via mail order.
