Hasn’t the year flown by? It seems like only yesterday that the ‘Black Youth Achievements’ team were getting ready for their premier event in November 2009. Still, time waits for no-one and this is why we should always try to live our lives to the full. Difficult sometimes with the stresses of day to day life, but tonight we will witness just how much can be achieved when we hear about our 2010 nominees and their paths to success.

‘Black Youth Achievements’ have had an extremely busy year! Along with the planning of the 2010 awards which started in January, we also hosted our first careers day in July which saw many organisations and training providers come together to help young people and their families explore the many different career, further education and business opportunities available to them. We’re really pleased that even in testing economic times, people then went on to secure employment as a result of attending the careers day, signed up to various courses and went on to find out about setting up their own business. Really looking forward to our next one in 2011!

We’ve also finished designing our ‘Youth In Excellence ©’ programme, which teaches young people how to utilise the entrepreneurial skills that they already have (but are probably unaware of) and use these to create their own businesses. Next year is going to be amazing!

Thank you all for your continued support not only of ‘Black Youth Achievements’ as an organisation, but of the people that we are working for and with. Our finalists are all ordinary people, but deserve recognition of who they are and what they are doing.

You are going to be so proud of them all and ‘Black Youth Achievements’ are honoured to be in a position once again to celebrate them.

Have a wonderful evening and remember – keep on achieving! Founder / Director

ACHIEVEMENT As I progress in my life, I want to take people with me on the journey of understanding life’s truths; young girls who have may have limited mind, or young people who need to be pushed and encouraged to bring out the unique creativity that they have. I love putting on community events, so we can come together and share, learn and laugh.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ebony Torrington – Community Category

Be independent, persistent and true to your dream. For me music is my life, my motto is ‘I don’t make music - music makes me’ you can use that phrase in whatever dream you have.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Naomi Francis – Arts Category

Being my own boss has opened up opportunities that I thought never existed and it has given me a new confidence and I have really found myself by doing this business. ‘Break all social barriers because you can, break all inner limitations because you want to and live life because you must’.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rose Fernando – Business and Enterprise Category

The most invaluable advice is to believe in your dream. If you do not have 100% belief that you can convert an idea into reality, nobody else will. During the good times your dream will seem a reality, though when periods of adversity arises this is when you are tested. It is crucial that you embrace the bad times as they will make your journey worthwhile when they have been overcome.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The LIFE Experience – Community Category

To win this award would be overwhelming. I have gone through a lot in my life, in the last four years especially. To be recognised for my achievements in theatre, TV, and creative entrepreneurship would be wonderful. But to be recognised for achieving these as a mixed heritage male with the social background I come from would mean the world to me.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alex Browning – Arts Category

We’ve all been blessed with gifts and talents and it’s up to us to use those gifts to the best of our abilities to get us where we want to be in life.

No one is going to do it for you, you have to dig deep and want it for yourself. You have to push and keep on pushing against all odds no matter what.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Valerie Bakare – Education Category

Achievement is a personal thing. Where are all in our own personal race, I believe the only person you are trying to beat is yourself. You cannot live your life competing against others because we all have different gifts and abilities.

If you can do YOU to the best of your ability, each and every day, then that is the greatest achievement.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Junior Ogunyemi – Business and Enterprise Category

Never ever give up on your dreams, because if you give up on your dreams you give up on yourself and your success, which just makes you another statistic and a product of your community.

Always stand strong and fight to make your dreams and goals come through. Remember to always believe in yourself that you can make a change if you really want to.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dennis Gyamfi – Community Category

I’d say that when life is hard and you feel you can’t go on, keep pushing on and don’t quit. Winners don’t quit and quitters don’t win.

It’s key to develop a positive attitude, regardless of what kind of tribulation you’re going through. The motivation starts with you.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Tashaurn Hall Beckles – Education Category

– in their own wordsStick to your dream as anything is possible. Just have the correct mind set which makes you strive for what you want and have a hunger which makes you so busy trying to succeed, you have no time to daydream about your goals, as you make that dream a reality.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michael Kosmas – Business and Enterprise Category

I love the work I do as it gives me the chance to tell people my story and help them succeed and strive to excellence in their life just as I did. I will continue to help young people and share my life experience some may not learn but if one does I’ve succeeded in my job. Success feels good!. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Amy Tandoh – Choices Category

It means gaining something invaluable no matter how big or small. It means obtaining something that you can be proud of, that no-one can minimise. It means accomplishing something in spite of doubt from others. As long as you feel that you have succeeded, it is an achievement.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Shanice McAnuff – Education Category

I think having people around you who have experienced what you’ve been through and achieved what you want to achieve is absolutely vital. They know what you may be going through and you can pull on their experiences and knowledge to help you overcome obstacles in your path.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Richard Kuti – Business and Enterprise Category

You deserve the very best achievement of which you’re capable. The challenges and setbacks and disappointments are there to make you determined enough to get it.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Paris Thomas-Robinson – Choices Category

Giving up is the easiest option you will always have in your life, one will always face trials and tribulations that could hold you back when trying to achieve your goals but challenging them will only make you stronger and more resilient.

Even though you might not achieve the goal you have set for yourself, you have put yourself on the right path to accomplish something positive in your life.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rotimi Adeeko – Sports Category

It really would mean a lot to me, to actually win an award, just to know that someone or people have actually recognised me and picked me out of a selection of young people, that would just be amazing.

There is a motto that always keeps me going, ‘Set goals, and reach them. Aim high, and you’ll do well.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kanayo Dike-Oduah – Education Category

Everyone has the potential to do whatever they want but you can’t do it unless you have confidence in yourself so build confidence first. I would say that never give up because success is only learnt through failures, so if you make a mistake it just puts you closer to success because you now know how not to do it.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jerome Harvey-Agye – Community Category

If my PE coach and a couple of my friends didn’t convince me that I may make it big in athletics, I don’t know whether I would be where I am now.

Having people that believe in you is always a great boost and with all my coaches, friends and family behind me, I know I can achieve great things. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ebuka Bob-Ume – Sports Category

Michael Carty is the director of Macpro Ltd, a youth training development initiative providing opportunities for young people who have an interest in working and participating in global youth, sports and social education programmes. Macpro develops innovative community sports and leadership training. Our training programmes are tailored to suit young people of all levels and abilities, aged 14 to 25.

A former professional basketball player and a qualified Level 3 basketball coach, Michael has over twenty five years’ experience in managing capacity-building activities and supportive services for young people, including the Macpro Basketball League which has been running since 2003.

Macpro Ltd. provides support for young people in disadvantaged areas of Southwark and Lambeth, with a main focus on basketball training. This has proved very successful and resulted in significant youth achievement locally and internationally. In 2009, we won the prestigious ‘Black Business Initiative’ Sports, Heritage & Culture award, in recognition of the valuable services we offer to young people in South London.

We are supported by youth volunteers who have come through our social development programme over the years and gone on to recognised clubs pursuing career goals through higher education. The emphasis is on having fun and building self-attainment within sport, through disciplined participation in programmes which cover diverse areas of sports leadership.

As Michael puts it,“I grew up in care, and as a teenager lived in Brixton and experienced deprivation at first hand. I faced life challenges head on, and sport gave me the opportunity to strive for personal empowerment and a sense of fulfillment”. Macpro believes that sport enables young people to be disciplined individuals, enabling them to carefully consider life choices and open the door to greater opportunities. As such, our training programmes play a key role in helping to raise aspirations in the community.

Afridiziak Theatre News is a website celebrating African-Caribbean theatre. Launched in September 2008, this is the UK’s one-stop guide to all things theatre-related from an African-Caribbean perspective.

From theatre listings, interviews with Whoopi Goldberg, Michelle Williams, Oliver Samuels and Bashy to all the latest reviews and news – Afridiziak Theatre fills the gap for anyone wanting to know all that’s happening in the rich, cultural tapestry of black theatre. The site was set up by journalist Sophia Jackson who saw an opportunity and ran with it. The patron of Afridiziak Theatre News is acclaimed playwright and comedian, Angie Le Mar (Forty, Do You Know Where Your Daughter Is? and The Brothers).

Since the site was launched, Afridiziak Theatre News has held talks on theatre, worked with Straight to Audience Productions, Talawa Theatre Company, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Geoff Schumann – Treading the Boards, Lime magazine and now the Black Youth Achievement Awards. We have also been featured in Pride magazine, Arts Hub, Ethno News, The Gate Post, Itz Caribbean and on Colourful Radio.

Screen Nation, founded in 2003 by independent film producer Charles Thompson produces the Screen Nation Film & TV Awards, whichuniquely is the only annual international celebration of achievement within urban world cinema and TV in the UK. The event is now confirmed as ‘the’ industry diversity event recognised and supported by industry bodies and all major terrestrial and satellite broadcasters. Celebrating the cascade of achievements that have helped enrich world and UK cinema & TV with cultural diversity, the Awards combine the glamour of international movie stars alongside British talent and has been dubbed by the media as the ‘Black Bafta’s’.

Screen Nation is committed to promoting equality and social inclusion through the development and establishment of a vibrant black British screen media sector. Via the Screen Nation Foundation and various commercial products the organisation acts as a platform for change, raising the profile of black talent, and is set up with the sole purpose of promoting greater cultural diversity in the world of film & TV in the UK.

Screen Nation recognises the significant influence the black community has on popular culture, but although the cultural landscape is positively evolving sees the under-representation of black people in UK media. Through the binding forces of partnership, participation and equity the work of Screen Nation creates a synergy between the black media sector, business, audiences and the community at large, allowing opportunities to flourish.

Our VisionThe Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust (the Trust) works closely with learners, educational institutions, businesses and public and voluntary-sector organisations and funders to identify real needs and create opportunities that help young people realise their full potential. This is achieved through a blend of academic and vocational training, creative learning and skill acquisition projects together with work readiness activities and advice. The Trust ultimately hopes to:l Advance social justice by promoting diversity, equality and community cohesion.l Relieve poverty by addressing the causes of urban decay, youth disaffection and educational underachievement.l Create healthier urban communities by improving urban design, enterprise, regeneration and sustainability.

The operational base is the Stephen Lawrence Centre, a community-based, purpose-built centre of educational and training excellence in Deptford, on the borders of the London Boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich. The Trust supports and encourages communities to engage in activities that give them a positive experience of citizenship. It provides opportunities for businesses to engage with and contribute to the social, environmental and economic development of the communities within which they operate. Our MissionAs a national educational charity, our mission is to:l Reduce race inequalities by challenging discrimination and supporting the development of sustainable and cohesive communities. l Increase the number of young people who pursue a career in urban design, the built environment and the architectural professions with a focus on bringing about lasting improvements to those whose life chances are constrained by economic, cultural and social hardship. l Help young people find pathways out of poverty into sustainable, rewarding careers in urban design and regeneration.l Improve the educational achievements of young people.l Promote diversity in professions associated with the built environment. l Enable those in the professions of the built environment to work in partnership with the Trust to make their professions more accessible. l Provide opportunities for young people to explore their creativity in the field of architecture and urban design.l Raise the awareness of careers in architecture and urban design amongst those who have traditionally been excluded from entering and sustaining a career in the profession.

Link Fostering Agency was set up to provide an independent, innovative and child centred fostering service for children and young who are in the care of local authorities. Our fundamental belief is that every child and young person has right to experience living within a supportive family where they are valued and respected.

Link has eighty approved and committed foster carers who come from all walks of life and who live across London and the Home Counties. Our carers offer a range of placements that promote a high level of care, encouragement, safety and security for children and young people who are unable to live within their own families. In particular, our carers are experienced in offering placements to children who are unaccompanied asylum seekers or rescued from trafficking.

Many of our carers are from Black and ethnic minority communities, as are many of our children. We always aim to match children to carers from their own background where we can, including ethnicity, language and religion.

We always want children placed with our foster carers to make the best out of life. With some children, particularly those who have suffered greatly before being placed with us, this can be a challenge. However, our view is that all children deserve the best chance in life and we always support their achieving – whether that be in learning, sports, the arts, business or community activities.

But don’t take our word for it – our last Ofsted inspection found that when it comes to helping children to achieve, we were “outstanding” – but we’re not being complacent and we are always looking at new ways to help children achieve and to celebrate their successes: contributing to this award is one of them.
