BURRARD YACHT CLUB 81st ANNUAL SAILPASTSaturday, May 4th, 2013

We would like to invite every member of Burrard Yacht Club to this year’s 81st Annual SailPast ceremonies.

For those members who are unable to attend aboard their own boat we would like to encourage them to consider attending aboard another member’s boat.

This is a formal club event that officially opens our boating season and tradition dictates that all club members participate in SailPast. Members are to be in Summer Uniform with guests to be in nautical attire. Good manners require that a member unable to participate will send his or her regrets to the Commodore.

On Friday May 3rd we will kick of this year’s Sailpast with a Steak, Caesar salad, Garlic Bread and dessert dinner at the Club house. You will be receiving an e-vite for this dinner and we ask that you respond so we can confirm the number attending. The bar will be open and you will have an opportunity to check out one or two new wines Social may consider adding to our selection. Dinner is $10.00 and starts at 1800. Please let us know if did not receive the e-vite.

The formal Sailpast event will begin on Saturday at 0730 with coffee and Muffins at the top of the ramp. The Commodore and Flag Officers will walk the docks starting at 0830. Ceremonies will commence at 0930. Upon the completion of the ceremonies The Commodore will leave on his boat to anchor off Belcarra Park. All boats will be asked to leave as per the Fleet Sailing orders to muster in the respective areas in preparation for the SailPast. Members will proceed to pass the Commodore starting at 1200.

Vessels will sail past, dipping their colours in salute, with the Captain (hat on) saluting the Commodore, with the ship’s company standing at attention.

Once you have completed your salute you are invited to rendezvous up at Clementine Outstation.

At this point feel free to change into casual attire for the afternoon.

When you see the Outstation, please contact Mike Davison SHAMAN ll on low setting on Channel 69.

We will be serving food from 1500 until 1730. You will be receiving an e-vite so we can confirm numbers. Please join us for some food, music and mingling on the docks.

For those who do not wish to stay overnight we have arranged for Oceanwatch to pick up, up to 40 people from Clementine at 1830 and return them to Deep Cove. Those wishing to continue on to BYC will be transported aboard a bus arriving at the club at about 2030. We have also sent out an e-vite to determine numbers for the return trip.

We would like to encourage everyone to attend and to help us a great deal with preparation please reply to your e-vite.

Membership News

The “A friend of Yours is a friend of Ours” program has been underway since the beginning of February and will continue the end of May. There is time remaining for you to recruit your friends to join BYC and receive as way of thanks, a credit on your account equivalent to your yearly dues. We have recruited 7 new members since January this year, 5 full members and two Juniors. Special thanks to Frank and Dawn-Marie Plumptre and Neil Tylsley for introducing their friends to us.

This is not a membership drive per se but simply a recognition that our club is maturing in age and must be diligent in encouraging new blood in order to maintain and continue improve the boating experience we’ve come to appreciate

So get out there and twist some arms. Remember to let me know who your prospects are so that I can help in the process.

P.S. Sailpast is a great event to introduce your friends to the club…

SAFETY INSPECTIONS TO BE COMPLETEDAlthough Safety Weekend managed to complete successful inspections on 160 vessels, approximately 100 vessels remain to be completed.

Members are reminded that the Club’s Rules require that your vessel complete its inspection by the 1st of June. This includes providing proof of insurance for your vessel. Two alternate dates at BYC are available for inspections: May 7 and May 28 from 1730-2000hrs. Additionally there is a special inspection scheduled for Mosquito Creek from 1730-2000hrs for vessels moored there. Sign up sheets are posted outside the office.

Inspections may also be done at Spring Cruise at Ekins on the 18 to 20 of May. If there are special circumstances preventing the completion of your inspection by the 1st June, you must notify the Safety Director in writing and you may be granted a temporary waiver.

Non-mooring members may also pass the safety inspection by obtaining a Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary or equivalent Power Squadron inspection and providing the completed safety check form and proof of insurance to the Safety Director.  Note that it is necessary that the inspection include a check for holding tank, radar reflector and of any propane installation.

PLEASE BE PREPAREDo THE OWNER OR SPOUSE MUST BE ABOARD FOR THE INSPECTIONo YOU MUST HAVE A COPY OF YOUR REGISTRATION OR LICENCEo YOU MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF LIABILITY INSURANCE ($ 2 million minimum) TO THE

CLUB INSPECTOR o HAVE YOUR FLARES AND OTHER SAFETY EQUIPMENT LAID OUT OR WITHIN EASY

REACH.

If you have not completed all requirements for your inspection by 1 June, you WILL be assessed a monthly fee until completion. In addition, if you still have not successfully completed all requirements by the 30th of June, the Board will consider further action which may require that the member surrender his/her burgee and a mooring member remove his/her vessel from the Club until such time that all requirements have been met.

Any questions/concerns should be addressed to the Safety Director.

Shore Report

Recently a mattress was put in the Club dumpster. It is not even clear that this mattress would have come from a boat. We have been informed by our disposal company that the Club will be charged a disposal fee of $50 for the mattress. If this was yours could you please contact the office. On that note I would like to remind members that the same rules apply to our dumpster that apply at the transfer station. There is a lengthy list of items that are not accepted or are charged a fee for disposal at the transfer station. Please do not dispose of any of these items in our dumpster. A partial list that includes items that should never end up in our dumpster is as follows: • Asbestos• Electronics• Explosives and ammunition (I assume this would include flares)• Pesticides• Paint cans• Compressed gas cylinders (including but not limited to propane)• Fiberglass insulation• Gypsum/drywall• Mattresses• Automobile waste: tires, used oil filters, lead-acid batteries Please don’t dispose of any prohibited items in our dumpster as you are imposing the associated cost on your fellow club members. Thanks,

Colin Dunwoody Shore Captain

SEASONAL TRAVEL ADVISORY

Please note - The Indian Arm and Howe Sound areas are steep sided salt water fjords where high rainfall and/or rapid snowmelt have previously triggered debris flood or debris flow torrents in a number of the mountainside creeks. These events can be very destructive and may occur without warning so please keep this in mind and exercise caution if you choose to visit these areas during periods of high precipitation.

Social Committee Report

Safety Weekend was a huge success by all accounts, despite the torrential downpour on Friday night which probably accounted for a bit lower turnout than expected. Almost everybody signed up via Evite and while some of you signed up in both places, only 2 or 3 just signed up on the sign-up sheets outside the office which is fantastic. Thanks to everyone for giving up your seat so that someone else could sit to enjoy their meal – we served about 150 Friday night and 170 for lunch on Saturday – no small feat in a room that was set for 80 people. Signing up in advance also takes some of the guessing out of how many to expect and really reduces the waste. Always be sure to let us know how many in your party – easy to do on Evite if you “view the invitation” first. You also have the option to add a comment and/or opt out of receiving all comments at that point.

There were two informal events over Safety Weekend that were also very well received. The first was a casual wine tasting (6-8 whites and 8 or 9 reds) on Friday night after dinner. We had asked participants to bring wines under $15 and wines under $25 to come up with some new ideas for the BYC house wines. We’ll probably do something more official later in the year and we certainly had fun – not sure that our tasting notes (yuk, yum, smells like socks…) are completely useful but we think we’ve figured out how to make it work next time. The second event was a Potluck Appy hour late on Saturday afternoon for many of the members who were staying overnight on their boats. We had about 30 people who came out for that. And of course the dancing on both nights was lots of fun too – thanks to Ingrid for bringing her iPod out to make for a nice change.

Special thanks to all the volunteers – Tom Hammond (behind the scenes sautéing all those onions and slicing tomatoes & lettuce), Jennifer Thornton, Edith Wormsbecker, Sue Arnold, Jule Hopkins, Neal Tyldsley, Lee Ann Sutton, Don & Linda Fetterly, and our Barbecue Team - Conor Shankey, Rob Langford and non-members, Katrine Clarke and Bernard Besseling. These events are never easy to pull off but Neal and Jule have been doing it with their team for years and making it look quite effortless so it was fantastic to have the benefit of their help and experience. Rose Robertson & Ingrid Simpson did their usual OUTSTANDING JOB of selling 50/50 tickets and 4 winners took home approximately $250 apiece. Everyone else was really digging in too and I’m guessing that this week they’re a little more appreciative of their day job. Fantastic effort everyone! A big Thank You! I sure hope I haven’t missed anyone.

Thanks to Edith Wormsbecker for sharing these photos from A Taste of Portugal Evening – looks like everyone had a fantastic time.

UPCOMING EVENTS LOCATION/CONTACT

DATE/TIME

Sail Past – These events are being organized by Vice Commodore, Burns McLellan and Rear Commodore, Rob Langford and we’ll be sending out 3 Evites:

1. Friday night Steak Dinner – steaks are fresh and so you must sign up by Monday at noon so that we can get our order in – if you’re not signed up you won’t have a steak. We had about 80 sign up last year and this is about the maximum the clubhouse holds so you’ll want to sign up right away. Cancellations after Monday noon will be charged to your account.

2. Saturday Sail Past Party at Clementine – this is a catered event and we want to be sure there is enough food for everyone without wasting our money by ordering too much. A catered event means that the club pays a price per head for the numbers we guarantee on Tuesday – they actually start cooking some of the food on Friday so we really want to have as accurate numbers as possible. This is a club sponsored event and critical you RSVP by Tuesday at noon to ensure we have enough food for you and your guests.

3. Transportation from Clementine to BYC for those not staying overnight courtesy of Ocean Watch – seats a maximum of 40 people and advance sign up is requested.

Any problems or questions regarding Evite, please contact Karen Shankey at [email protected] or at 604-730-9350. Thanks!

Breakwater Update

The Breakwater Committee is pleased to report that construction of the first of our three breakwater units has now commenced. A great deal of time and effort has been expended to reach this milestone and there is still much more to do before this project is completed. Our Committee Chair, Burns McLellan, wishes to acknowledge the work done by past and current breakwater committee members who have supported this initiative and have been involved for years to resolve BYC's breakwater issues.

In February, the technical group in our committee completed a very thorough review of the Engineering plans. A number of items were raised as a result of our review and each of these items was forwarded to IMF for resolution. We met with IMF and their engineers and were able to present the final items which needed to be considered. Subsequently IMF responded with solutions which have in turn been approved by our committee as well as our consultant from Metro Testing.

By March, we had completed our review of the drawings and had given IMF the approval to proceed. Final drawings were received in early April and after a thorough review by Stan Shepard, some minor amendments were made and we were satisfied that the engineering drawings were complete.

We next received a call advising us that the floor of the first unit was ready for concrete. All the steel work had been laid and completed, forms built, and concrete scheduled. Our Commodore, John McCallum, along with Burns McLellan, Stan Shepard, Peter Valkenburg, and James Nelson traveled to IMF on Thursday April 11th to witness the concrete being placed on our first unit. Photos have been attached for members' review. On site during the pour was our representative from Metro Testing who inspected the steel before the work began and as well remained on site during the pour. Now that production has commenced we will be visiting the site on a regular basis and will update at least monthly with additional photos

Inshore Rescue Boat stationed in Stanley Park VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)Shane Woodford | Email news tips to [email protected]

After the closing of Kits Coast Guard base Ottawa has activated a new Inshore Rescue Boat, based in Stanley Park.

A shipping advisory sent out by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans informs mariners the new Coast Guard IRB station became active on Monday.

The station will be manned by three Coast Guard crewmen who will use a 'fast rescue craft' to respond to marine emergencies.

Later on, the Coast Guard staff will be reduced to one and two students will be rotated in to man the station at the HMCS Discovery base in Coal Harbour.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says the base will operate 24 hours a day seven days a week. What that means is three people will work eight hours on and 16 off but will be on call, with a planned 30 minutes or less response time.

The IRB station will run from April 15th to September 3rd every year.

The Feds closed the Kitsilano Coast Guard station in February.

Security

We have completed the preparation for the new Security Gate operators. Final installation will occur on or about April 26th.

This is a reminder the gate will be locked at all times so you will need to remember your key, key fob, or remember to get the Gate Code. Although the Gate Code can still be obtained from the office it is now available on Web Site in the member’s private area. Please contact Cliff if you do not know how to get onto the private members area.

Key fobs are available at the Maintenance office.

If you do not have any of the above the front gate will now have an intercom to contact the office.

Please do not give out keys to any non member. After the gate goes into operation any one that has a key and is not a member will be asked to return it.
