We’re firm believers that life’s too short for a bad meal (or coffee) and since we have somewhat of an “in” with The Urban List crew, we asked them to pull together a hit list of the best Byron has to offer.

A huge thanks to AJ James for her intel and crafty way with words – we know who to blame for any extra kilos after the weekend! And to Gabby Stjernqvist for making it all look so darn delicious!

We know we’re keeping you pretty busy with our celebrations, but on the off chance that you’ve carved out an extra day or two, we hope you’re able to put this guide to good use.

BYRON BEACH CAFÉ

Perfect for an informal, post-beach breakfast –

particularly when it’s a bowl of breakfast beans with a side of

avocado smeared seeded toast. Great coffee, good pastries

and for those who’ve really celebrated, the onion rings and

burgers are truly restorative.

A must if you make it up to Bangalow – particularly for

breakfast. It’s owned and operated by husband and wife team

Karl and Katrina Kanetani, who’ve worked in Sydney at Quay,

Pier, Est and Tetsuya’s. Katrina has an incredible way with

sweet things, so anything baked and sitting on the

counter is a must.

Yes, we’re taking you there on Friday night, but the ocean

views may be enough to entice you back for an early breakky

on Saturday or recovery feed the day after. Fresh, local,

seasonal fare with a gorgeous seaside vantage.

THE ROADHOUSE

We love it here. Some of the boys who worked at Top Shop run

the floor, and it’s rivalling their own stomping grounds as the

locals’ pick for both coffee and locally sourced and often or-

ganic dishes. Beautiful breakfasts, and once the sun goes down

the fun kicks in owing to their 400+ types of whisky and well

priced, ever-changing mains.

6/142 BANGALOW ROAD

BAYLEAF

Always popular, and rightly so. Their breakfasts and lunch are

lovely, but the coffee is next level. They serve the blends of

Marvell Street Roasters who run off the premise ‘life’s too short

for bad coffee’. You can pick up some of their beans to take

home from the café too.

HARVEST

THE ITALIAN AT THE PACIFIC

TARGA

ST ELMO

Really good things await up in the hinterland. Housed in a

100-year-old bakery and cottage, Harvest is an institution,

renowned for the seasonally focused menu. We can’t fault

it for breakfast, lunch or dinner, as no matter the meal,

you’ll be feeling content and quite green, with much of

the fresh produce grown on their 5-acre farm just a few

kilometres away. A great bar set up too with one of the

best wine lists in the region.

No guesses on the cuisine of choice here. Great

Italian fare with a mean Amaretto Sour. NOTE: Be-

ware the pub next door! There’s a reason we didn’t

select to host our Friday night drinks at The Italian!

High risk territory for first night fever…

Another Italian pick. It’s a little less formal,

but equally delicious.

Our go-to if Spanish reds and morsels of jamon

and manchego are the order. All the plates are

great, but the beef cheek is particularly rich,

and the empanadillas moreish. Great for lunch,

dinner or casual afternoon snacks and drinks.

RAE’S FISH CAFÉ

Not surprisingly, the menu is practically all seafood. It’s all

divine, as too is the setting in this famed hotel that

overlooks gorgeous Watego’s Beach.

8 MARINE PARADE, WATEGO’S

TREEHOUSE

If there are a few of you and you’re looking for some

informal fun you need to scoot here – five minutes from the

town centre, just off Belongil.Beach. Good food and

even better wood fired pizzas.

25 CHILDE STREET, BELONGIL

PIZZA BAR

Alternatively, if you don’t want to leave town but

are craving pizza, this is another, more central spot

that’s good and family friendly.

FISHMONGERS

OZYMEX

RAW BAR BY NAKED TREATIES

ORGASMIC

Downright delicious fish and chips! And with a very expansive

menu – from the comforting crumbed fillet (with very fat

potato chips) to the slightly cleaner, yet equally

satisfying, grilled prawns.

Sometimes you just need a taco or pile of nachos, packed with

heat and flavour to get you through ‘the day after’… It’s the

eatery for the famed Byron Bay Chilli Company, who make the

salsas and sauces with the cult following that are now stocked

all over the country.

Get your feel good fix, and one of Australia’s best green

smoothies. Packed with many a super food, they’ll get you

glowing and running on green vibes for your whole stay. And

interestingly enough, their healthy thick shakes, taste just like

chocolate ones. (As do the raw Bounty Bars. Just saying…)

Never-ending Felafel pockets… Okay. admittedly they do end,

but they’re very deep and stuffed with freshly fried chickpea

croquettes and copious Middle Eastern condiments.

Seven Mile Beach.

If you do the LIGHTHOUSE WALK at dawn you’ll be well rewarded.

Start at the Clarkes Beach car park and head up towards the light-

house. Follow the signs and wind your way past The Pass, Watego’s

Beach and up those steep, steep stairs, past the most easterly point of

Australia. The panoramic view is extraordinary. After you’ve taken the

obligatory iPhone snaps, either turn around and head back down the

stairs, or return via the winding road through the rainforest.

Head up to BANGALOW for ample boutiques and antiques, sweet

spots to breakfast, and the brilliant BANGALOW PHARMACY (23

Byron Creek Road). The food in the Hotel’s dining room would be our

pick for ‘pub grub’ in the area and THE ITALIAN DINNER (Shop 2, 37 –

39 Byron Street) serves classic Italiana in a modern and relaxed space.

WHIAN WHIAN FALLS are on the land of a landowner, but open to all.

It’s a bit of a trek to find them, but they’re worth the expedition, and

make for a great spot to swim and picnic. Just type, ‘Whian Whian

Road’ into your iPhone map and head towards Dunoon. You’ll cross a

cement bridge, then park directly on the left. Find the fence, and follow

it down to the falls. An oasis awaits.

If the wind is in your favour, head to SEVEN MILE BEACH. With your

umbrella, beach toys, and picnic in tow (stock up at Green Garage for

delicious supplies), get on the road heading towards Lennox Heads.

Veer up Broken Head Road, take the dirt track on the right (Google

marks it as Seven Mile Beach Road), and continue along the road.

There are a number of marked spots you could stop and park at, but

good things come to those who wait, and if you continue along to

Seven Mile you needn’t incur the steep descent, or steep ascent, down

to the sand. That said, Whites Beach, with the steep descents is pretty

stellar.

NEW BRIGHTON is about 15 minutes north up the highway. It’s a great

town and much calmer than Byron. Their hotel has a beautiful beer

garden, and possibly the best hotel signage around. Very good fish

and chips are just next door.

MANIKMUDHONEY

Another spot that comes highly recommended for

Saturday-morning hair and make up. First in best tressed.

A one-stop shop to have you wedding ready, complete

with rock’n’roll attitude. It’s a central spot for spray tans,

nails, hair and make up – all in one. And recommended by

everyone in town.

AVA BELLENo pressure. Just if you want to. (Zero points for creativity

re the name, but apparently they’re great.)If you’re worried about the early start and how to get your

hair done, get a group together and email Ava about having

a stylist come to you. Blow dries or up-dos are a cinch, as is

make up if you feel the urge.

If you’ve got time and a few fellow spa goers, take a trip to

Mullumbimby and spend a few hours jumping between their
