Words can not describe how fantastic it is to see the children back at school this week. The teachers have thoroughly enjoyed having their class back again with teaching and learning getting back to normal.

It is refreshing to see and hear the sound of happy students, both in the classroom and out in the playground. I have had the great pleasure of visiting classrooms and have been very impressed with how the students have presented back at school with a renewed level of engagement and commitment to learning. Well done, boys and girls.

A BIG thank you to our amazing parents who took up the challenge of home learning, it is very much appreciated. Teaching is not an easy job and we know that there must have been additional challenges at home.

It is expected that all students will have returned to school this week unless they are sick or have a doctors certificate explaining that they have an illness that requires further leave.

National Reconciliation Week National Reconciliation Week is on the same time each year between 27 May to 3 June. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This years theme is, ‘In this together.’

2020 marks the twentieth anniversary of the reconciliation walks of 2000, when people came together to walk on bridges and roads across the nation and show their support for a more reconciled Australia.

As always, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and Australians now benefit from the efforts and contributions of people committed to reconciliation in the past. Today we work together to further that national journey towards a fully reconciled country. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

On this journey, Australians are all ‘In This Together’; every one of us has a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures. First School Assembly Via Zoom This week we held our first whole school assembly via Zoom. It was good to see everyone in their classrooms being respectful, responsible and fair whilst participating in this important event. We commended the 26 award recipients for their great work and also gave out our playground and yellow ticket awards. It’s good to know that even during these challenging times, we are still able to find new ways to meet as a whole school and celebrate our achievements together. Thank you to Miss Stanton-Gillan and Ms Lennon who organised the assembly and to our amazing School Captains who did a great job running the assembly.

School Uniforms Our school values are those of being respectful, responsible and fair. I ask all families to please ensure that the wearing of correct school uniform is a priority. By wearing the correct school uniform, students are demonstrating that they are responsible students who have pride in their school, along with being respectful of school expectations.

The office no longer has any spare uniforms left to give to students who have soiled their clothes. With the wet weather, quite a few students have needed a dry change of clothes as they have fallen over in the wet grass. If you have uniforms at home that the children have grown out of could you please donate them to the office. Additionally, if we send your child home with clothing loaned from school, could you please give it a wash and return it to school.

Temporary Kiss and Drop Off Zone in Tennyson After weeks of negotiating with the council and the council agreeing to set up a temporary kiss and drop off zone in Tennyson St, they have decided not to go ahead with it. I am disappointed in this outcome.

Different Pick Up Times to Ease Congestion Around the School This week we are trialling staged finishing times with students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2, along with their siblings in Years 3 - 6 finishing their lessons earlier, ready for collection from the exit gates at 3pm. We are trialling this in order to ease the congestion at the gates in the afternoons and to make it easier for our parents to adhere to social distancing requirements that are in place for adults. If your child/ren are in K - 2 and you pick them up of an afternoon, please be there to collect them at 3.00pm. Siblings in Years 3 - 6 are ready for collection at this time. The remaining children in Years 3 - 6 are finishing as usual at 3.15pm.

New Families A BIG warm welcome to our new families. Byron Bay is lucky to have students who readily welcome new children to the school. It is a great strength of our school community and one that the students are to be congratulated on.

Staff News Welcome to Carol Davies who is our new cleaner that has been appointed for the duration of Term 2 to assist with enhanced cleaning procedures that are in place. Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

Home Readers Teachers are endeavouring to make sure that students have success with their home reading. Across the board, because of the interruption to daily book reading, many students may need to be reading books at a lower level than they were before the changes. Others may have had access to books and improved. Over the coming weeks, teachers will be looking at which level is best for your child, but please understand that this will take some time to assess. Success comes from their sense of achievement when they read and their enjoyment of the text. We encourage you to continue to have a daily routine of home reading with your child, with them reading books to you at any easy level as well as shared texts that you read to them.

Stage 2 Science In Stage 2, our topic for Science was ‘Heat Transfer and Conduction’. There was a video to watch, some slides to read and an experiment to conduct! Students were asked to test how heat transfers through metal, wood and plastic by placing spoons made of these materials into boiling water with butter on the end. The spoon with the fastest melting butter was the best conductor! Picture is one experiment completed by Oskar 4P.

Waste Free Wednesday As we are a school committed to sustainability, we are encouraging students to come to school with a waste free lunch. Classes will be competing for the class that has the most waste free lunches.

Library News

If your child/ren have a library book at home on loan, please send library books back to be returned. Students can place them in the “Returns Box” located outside the library. Borrowing will recommence when current COVID19 restrictions are lifted.

Please note, there will be a limited menu available. Sign up at www.flexischools.com.au to place your orders. Orders need to placed before 9.15am. We recommend placing your child’s lunch order the night before. Additionally, the canteen will not be

handling any money until further notice. In the event that you are unable to place an online order, please send your child/ren to school with food in their bags. Unfortunately, at this stage, volunteers are unable to assist in the canteen, however this is temporary and we hope to be welcoming our lovely volunteers back soon. If you wish to volunteer in the canteen, the hours are 9.00am to 12.00pm, please email to [email protected] or phone Mandy on 6685 6557 for more information.

Please be advised that for the next two weeks the Uniform Shop will be operating on Tuesday and not Monday. Please use Flexischools for ordering if you can, to keep face to face transactions to a minimum. These orders will be delivered on the Tuesday and we will include any orders made on the Monday as well so there are no delays.

Due to Covid19, at present we are not able to allow trying on of uniforms in the change rooms or the selling of second hand items. Thanks again for your patience and support.

Year 3 Watego students last week being creative While the rain was wonderful for all our new vegetable gardens, it wasn't good timing for sport activities. Students decided to improvise and added a little colour to an otherwise grey day.

Return of Laptops If you borrowed a laptop from the school during the Online Learning period, we ask that you kindly return them as soon as possible to the Computer Room before 9.15am or after school before 3.30pm, alternatively to the Front Office.
