FRESH

SUMS Up! Success Using Math Skills

The SUMS Up Math Program is a great way for students to keep their math skills sharp over the summer! This program is intended to help parents encourage their kids to stay fresh in math by giving them resources that align directly with the District 834 math curriculum.

Parents should order the grade level their child has just completed. This program is designed to help children maintain their grade level learning.

Each child registered will receive a colorful bag containing a workbook, a letter from the teacher and math manipulatives to use with their assignments. Each week, via email or U.S. Mail, we will send an assignment which will include focus workbook pages, as well as math games and suggested online sites that kids can go to for more practice. Lessons are completed by the child and corrected by the parent so there is nothing to turn in. This program is coordinated by district teachers who will be available over the summer via email to answer parent questions.

SUMS Up materials align with District 834’s math curriculum.

Students who attend Stillwater Area Public Schools will receive their bag with workbook and materials from their teacher during the last week of school. All other students can pick up their materials after June 6 at the Community Education office at 1875 South Greeley Street in Stillwater.

Mixed Ages

Children learn so much when they explore the world together. This is especially true in these classes that encourage and challenge language development, social interaction and physical development across ages. Parent discussion may include topics such as: sleep issues, fostering child creativity, behavior guidance, activities encouraging early literacy and math skills.

37 EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION

What is Early Childhood Screening?

Any child who will go to school in the state of Minnesota must have an Early Childhood Screening record. It involves a simple, easy method of finding out how a child between the ages of 3 and 4 is growing and developing. The screening process is meant to identify any possible health or learning concerns so that they may be addressed before a child enters school.

What are the goals of Early Childhood Screening?

• To find out how your child is growing and developing.

• To connect parent and child with early childhood programs and other community services.

• To answer any parenting questions/ concerns you may have.

At what age should my child be screened?

The ideal age to have your child screened is between 3 and 4. Early Childhood Screening is not a kindergarten readiness assessment. Children should be screened one to two years before they enter kindergarten.

What happens to the information gathered at Early Childhood Screening?

You will be given a full report of the findings when your child finishes the screening appointment. You will receive one copy of the report and one copy will be placed in your child’s cumulative file with the school district.

Why must I make sure my child attends a scheduled Early Childhood Screening appointment?

About 750 children are screened each year in Stillwater. Canceled or missed appointments make it difficult to systematically get all children screened at the appropriate age. It is also difficult to find a make-up time for children who miss an appointment.

How does my child get an Early Childhood Screening appointment?

The district census list of 3 to 4 year olds is used to obtain names and send notices about screening dates. If you are unsure as to whether your child is on the census, you may check with the enrollment office at 651.351.8412. If you receive a notice to attend a screening clinic, or you want to make an appointment before that time, schedule your appointment online at stillwaterschools.org/ec-screening or call 651.351.4022.

Appointments are held at the Early Childhood Family Center 1111 Holcombe Street South

Stillwater, MN 55082 Appointments typically last one hour.

Registration Online at stillwaterschools.org/ec-screening or call 651.351.4022

Driver Education

Stillwater Community Education partners with Safeway Driving School to offer a convenient teen driver education program in our schools. All instructors are licensed through the Minnesota Dept of Public Safety. The program is divided into two phases:

Classroom Phase: This phase includes the required 30 hours of classroom instruction that prepares students to take the Minnesota permit test and to take on the responsibility of driving. Make-up lessons can be completed in any other Stillwater Community Education or Safeway classroom session. Students can take the class at age 14½ but cannot take their permit test until age 15.

Behind-the-Wheel Phase: After students pass the permit test, they are required to complete six hours of driving lessons. The lessons are provided in three, two-hour lessons. Lessons can be scheduled online at www.safewaydrivingschool.com or by calling the Safeway office at 651.351.9150. Students will be picked up and dropped off at Stillwater Area High School.

Parent Involvement: It is critical that parents plan to practice regularly with their newly permitted drivers. Safeway offers detailed information on its web site to assist parents with understanding MN laws and requirements for student drivers. There is also a bi-monthly Parent Class offered at Safeway’s Stillwater classroom. Safeway strongly encourages all parents to review its Parent Information section at www.safewaydrivingschool.com.
