The Jubilee Year of Mercy Dec.8, 2015 -Nov. 20, 2016

The Role of Mercy in Each of the Sacraments (Part 2 of 3) By Father Ryan Connors

In Confirmation, God’s mercy heals the fear that often accompanies being a public witness to the faith. How needed in our age is the merciful grace of Confirmation to restore the Church’s public witness, especially about the truth of the moral law.

God’s mercy is enfleshed in the Holy Eucharist. Jesus, the merciful face of the Father, heals venial sins in Holy Communion. The mercy of God, which brings us the Eucharist, means we are never alone. God’s mercy waits for us in the sacrament of love.

The Sacrament of Penance is the sacrament of mercy par excellence. Sin, more than any other wound, requires God’s healing. And being drawn to his mercy—even more than revulsion against sin—should bring us to confession.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick heals the effects of sin. In holy anointing, God’s mercy ensures that the doubt and despair that often accompany sickness and death are healed in a soul already restored to his friendship in confession.

Last month I wrote that John Asaro, a member of the Parish Staff, was retiring to spend more time with his family, especially his grandkids. John began working for Corpus Christi as an evening front office receptionist ten years ago and eventually worked the day shift as well. When John announced his retirement, we announced that we were hiring someone to work Monday-Thursday evenings (the office is now closed Friday evenings) and Sundays. I am happy to announce that we have hired someone; you will be introduced to her shortly.

This week, however, I’d like to focus on another member of our Parish Staff who has also worked at Corpus Christi for the past ten years, David Hinojosa. In addition to working at Corpus Christi, David has also earned different technology certifications to prepare him for a career in computer security. While I knew that at some point David would be moving forward with his career, I had not expected it to be so soon. He will be greatly missed. If you have called or come into the office in the evenings or on Sundays, you know how kind, devoted, and professional David has been. It is hard to see David go, as not only has he been such a committed employee, but has become a friend to me and has been part of the family of Corpus Christi. If you know David, please stop by the Parish Office before his last day on July 1st to say thank you and wish him well as he embarks on this new journey. A message from David:

Hello. Many of you may already know me and for those of you who may not, I was the gentleman that has been working the evening shift in the Parish Office as well as on Sunday mornings. I have been extremely blessed to be a part of the Corpus Christi staff and have grown up at this parish. The people here are amazing and extremely supportive of each other. I am and will always be proud to call Corpus Christi “home.” As Father Chad mentioned, this decision was very sudden,

but after receiving my BS in IT Security along with a few other AAS degrees and a dozen certifications, I feel this would be a great start for a career in the IT field. I have prayed over this decision and spoken with family members and I have come to the conclusion that this would be the next step in my life; the next big adventure I shall embark on. This is not a “goodbye.” I am sure you will still see me around as I intend to be more involved in parish activities. Please pray for me during this big change in my life as I will continue to pray for all of you.

- David Hinojosa

www.kofc10062.org SUPREME KNIGHT ADDRESSES UN ON BEHALF OF PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS “The world’s greatest humanitarian crisis since World War II is unfolding in the Middle East.”

With these words, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson addressed the United Nations on Thursday, April 28th. The speech was part of a panel discussion sponsored by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See, which focused on human rights abuses and the persecution of religious minorities in the Middle East and throughout the world.

The supreme knight said, “Hundreds of thousands of people in Syria and Iraq have lost their lives, entire communities have been displaced or wiped out, while neighboring communities and cultures strain to accept millions of people fleeing years of war and terrorism. We face the very real prospect of the extinction of many of the communities indigenous to the region.”

Other speakers echoed the supreme knight's appeal for concrete action to help the victims of genocide. In particular, they urged the U.N. to prosecute those guilty of genocide, to take legal action to support full and equal rights for religious minorities in all countries of the Middle East, and to support genocide survivors seeking refugee status.

(Full message in June 2016 Knightline.)

FAITH THROUGH LOVE AND WORKS Living one’s faith means much more than professing beliefs and avoiding sin. In the Letter of James, we read, “If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and nothing to eat and you say to them, ‘Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,’ but do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

It is through the love of neighbors that the intent of our founder, the Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney is perpetually carr ied out by the Knights of Columbus.

Father McGivney founded the Knights initially to look after widows and orphans who were without “the necessities” of life following the untimely death of husbands and fathers due to untenable working conditions. The Knights were founded on God’s command: “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” (John 13:34)

The first principle of the Knights of Columbus is Charity. This virtue begins in our homes and reaches out to the “least of these” - “And the king will say to them, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’” (Matthew 25:40)

Tuesday, June 28th: Irenaeus, † c. 202; from Smyrna; disciple of Polycarp; the bishop of Lyons for twenty-five years; wrote against the Gnostics, especially, Adversus hæreses, first to provide a coherent rationale for a Christian Bible including both testaments, and first to offer a comprehensive account of belief in God’s universal providential and redemptive economy.

Wednesday, June 29th: PETER THE APOSTLE, † c. 64 in Rome under Nero; Galilean fisherman; spokesman for the Twelve who became “Prince of the Apostles”; two epistles are ascribed to him; patron of those in the fishing industry.

Online Giving is a web-based electronic contribution application that is available at our parish. This convenient system is safe and secure and allows you to start, stop, and

change your contributions at any time. Parishioners also have the option to see their tax information and to give to other Catholic charities online.

Online Giving allows the Parish to make better decisions based on a more stable income. It also helps the parish to know how active a parishioner is, which then gives necessary information for one to become a sponsor or receive tuition assistance for Catholic schools.

Currently, 11% of Corpus Christi parishioners give online. The goal of the Parish is to increase that number to 20%. You can sign-up for Online Giving through the link on our parish website at www.corpuschristiphx.org. Please prayerfully consider if you are doing your part to support your parish financially.

What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? How do I register? All Catholics living within the Parish and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs.

Adult children, 18+, need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get mar r ied, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors.

Also, in order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program.

You can register by coming to the Parish Office and filling out a short registration form. The registration form can also be downloaded from our parish website.

How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. Preparation classes are also required for parents prior to the child’s Baptism.

How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive.

How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
