POLAR BEARS–WALKING ON THIN ICE2018 POSTER CONTEST THEME

2

The polar bear has an uncertain future. Its habitat is retreating at an alarming pace as yearly increases in global temperatures reduce the extent of sea ice that forms in the Arctic. Polar bears are found throughout the Arctic Circle. Polar bears are at the top of the food chain in the Arctic. They have only one known predator – man. They can live as long as 20 - 30 years. They can see and hear as well as us, but their sense of smell is far better. They can sniff out a seal from miles away. Polar bears are covered in a thick waterproof fur on top of an insulating layer of blubber. Underneath the white fur, their skin is actually black. Polar bears feed mainly on seals. They are also scavengers who will feed on fish, birds, kelp, berries and human rubbish. In warm weather, they are in danger of overheating. They must find somewhere cool to rest or go for a swim.

Polar bear biologists have expressed grave concerns about the impact of climate change and the survival of the polar bear. Melting sea ice cause by global warming, habitat loss, over-hunting of some populations, increased shipping traffic, and organic pollutants may put the polar bear at risk. The key danger is starvation due to habitat loss. Polar bears hunt seals from a platform of sea ice. Reduction in sea ice causes polar bears to swim even further looking for food which can lead to their drowning. Rising temperatures cause the sea ice to melt earlier in the year, driving the bears to shore before they have built sufficient fat reserves to survive the period of scarce food in the late summer and early fall. Polar bears will be forced to look for food on land and will forage in garbage dumps which creates a dangerous situation for humans. Insufficient nourishment leads to lower reproduction in adult females and lower survival rates in cubs. Polar bears have the slowest reproductive rates. In the course of a lifespan, females produce an average of only five litters.

It is critical to remember the warming that threatens polar bears is human caused. If we caused it, we can fix it and there is lots of science out there that says we still can act in time to save the polar bear.

OCEAN PALS® CONTEST GOALSTo encourage young people to become aware of and share their concerns for the marine environ-ment through their poster art. These messages will be brought to the widest possible audience to create a stronger commitment protect the environment on which all life on this planet depends.
