Introduction

› Being connected while on the move has become a central customer expectation. To some extent, this trend is driven by the overall shift in customer behavior. This has many facets:

– The use of apps and connected devices has become a part of everyday live, and the expectation that cellular networks provide the required connectivity comes with it.

– Also for safety-related applications, the complementing role of cellular networks is becoming more and more important, especially as budget constraints make it difficult to argue for dedicated infrastructure.

– Ongoing discussions on a pan-European eCall add to the demand for cellular connectivity in vehicles.

› All in all, we are not discussing anymore whether cars will be connected in the future – the question rather:

How can we do this in a flexible,future-proof and cost-efficient manner?

C-ITSThe challenges

As NO single access technology can solve all the needs:access agnosticism is a must

Synergies coming from Road Safety and ‘classical’ applicationsare essential

› C-ITS– is essentially Sourced from M/453

› ISO/CEN are working on a precise definition– addresses best possible use of

› Communication technologies› Data collected from application

- Data miming requires different level of consolidations and management (along with anonymity)

– is about ITS related cooperation at all level› Communication Technologies (Access; networking; transport)› Applications exchange of data› Road safety and non safety ITS

› Cost of assigned spectrum implies different biz models

C-ITS: What to standardize on which level and with what methodology

› Interworking challenges- service delivery instances - service provider access layers

(communalities?)- service-enablement

components (network technology independent)

- service-enablement components (network technology sensitive)

- network operator access layer- the networking layer (radio,

MAC, etc.)- network technology specific

(within and across a technology cluster)

Are really the same methods applicable on- and across all those layers, players and instances?

Different design methodologies / common goals

› Goals– ensure smooth interworking between system and solution

components– decouple phases and layers to allow for timely evolutions– provide flexibility for service and systems evolutions and adaptations– fast, with low cost, with limited adaptation complexity

› Methods– Divide & Concur: Separate sub-tasks, freeze APIs, subdivide further– Formalize & Automate: Extract patterns, develop tool chain, automate– Encapsulate & Describe: Single out components, compose solutions

Which method is applicable for C-ITS standardizationon what aspect?

No single method for all aspects and on all layers

Conclusions

› C-ITS in on its way and needs substantial work to meet expectations.

– Different segments have to contribute the work!– Access agnosticism is a must and substantial efforts have been

done to comply– Modern sw technologies need to be taken in account

› An effective standardization requires some shift from an silo approach to an enabler or system component layered architecture

› Ericsson is supporting both the standardization and the business path

› Geomessaging enabler is an example about how the whole chain can be addressed
