Clémence Vazard is a Paris based artist whose interdisciplinaryartistic practice explores gendered violence and femalerepresentation. After graduating with a Master in Arts and Culture Studies at theSorbonne in Paris in 2009, the artist exhibited her work ininternational art festivals such as Chromatic Festival in Montrealand Passion for Freedom Festival in London and had several soloand group shows in London (M&C Saatchi), Paris (Galerie 21, FGOBarbara, Le Carreau du Temple...), Avignon (City Hall) and the US(Central Features Gallery).In 2017, a few months before #metoo, she engaged 12 women toreclaim their intimate stories by asking them one question: “What isyour first memory of being harassed?”. With these authentictestimonies and powerful portraits the artist created an immersivevisual and sound installation called #monpremierharcelement(#myfirstharassment). By giving these women the rare opportunity tospeak up, be listened to and believed, Clémence Vazardtransformed intimate stories into political matters. Recently, Clémence Vazard launched a multidisciplinary art projectcalled "Sois Belle et Tais-Toi "(Be pretty and shut up) to denouncethe negative impact of the beauty injunction on women’s rights. In aperformance, the artist traces the outline of her body with lipstickon a mirror, reminiscent of the traces left on the crime scenes.Clémence Vazard engages the audience to participate until sheremoves the plaster covering her lips. By freeing herself from thestereotypes and representation norms, Clémence Vazard sends amessage to other women that no beauty standard should interferewith the construction of their identity. Clémence is a thought leaderin art and feminism, the artist is regularly invited to give talks oreven museum lectures about women artists and feministmovements. She recently co-founded “META collective” with 13French womenartists. In a year only, the collective has already beeninvited to exhibit in galleries and Art Centres in Paris.

The "Sois Belle et Tais Toi" ("Be Pretty and Shut Up") project takes several forms, through which Clémence Vazarddenounces the negative impact of the injunction to beauty on women's rights. Here again, the artist's approach is based on personal experience and invites each woman to express her uniqueness, tofree herself from stereotypes.
The injunction to beauty is one of the many psychological and physical violences we suffer as women. On the occasion ofInternational Women's Day, the artist launched a video in which she staged herself, slowly removing the lipstick thatprevented her from expressing herself. Clémence Vazard also develops this reflection through a performance where she traces the outline of her body with lipstickon a mirror, reminiscent of the traces left on the crime scenes and engages the audience to free herself from thestereotypes and representation norms.

55 is the average number of minutes a woman spends each daytaking care of her appearance.* Alerted by this statistic, ClémenceVazard made a video in which she staged herself, gluing and thenpeeling off a plaster covered with lipstick on her mouth. The artistthus manifests the impossibility of expressing her singularity, trappedin the boxes of the norms of representation. Placed behind a one-way mirror, the original 14-second video isslowed down to 55 minutes. The spectator is invited to sit in front ofa dressing table, a piece of furniture representing the time spenttaking care of our physical appearance, to watch the video for 55minutes. "Tell me what you can't tell me." Even today, a woman is not free to express what she thinks/is/does. Issues
related to motherhood, marriage, the couple or sexuality in particular represent shackles in which a woman
must constrain herself, according to her community, her environment and her entourage. Clémence Vazard
asked women to express a sentence that they must pass over in silence to be accepted by their
communities. However, these statements are inaudible because the participants pronounce them with their
mouths closed with a plaster covered with lipstick.

In early 2017, several months before the #metoo revolution, Clmence Vzard gathered the testimonies of women who
answered her only question: "What is your first memory of harassment? ». Offering them the unique opportunity to tell
their story, to be heard, believed and supported, she placed myself as an « enlighten witness" (a method developed by
psychoanalyst Alice Miller in her writings on childhood traumas recovering process). Their portraits, photographed at
the end of the interviews, and their stories are fragmented, echoing the mechanisms of memory and self-narrative.
Gathered in an immersive visual and sound installation, their faces and voices invite the viewer to become aware of
the consequences of harassment and gender violence. A universal yet intimate issue.
