2014 ECO National Gathering Report

The 2014 National Gathering of the ECO and the Fellowship of Presbyterians was a great event attended by 1,300 participants. At the time of the conference there were 148 official ECO congregations representing some 60,000 covenant partners. That equals an average congregation size of about 400 covenant partners per congregation. We currently have about 280 covenant partners so perhaps our good company will help us to add even more individuals and families to our church family.

The highest level of government in the ECO is known as the Synod. Formerly we were accustomed to the Synod being a regional body and the General Assembly being the national body; however, in the ECO the national Synod is the only level above the Presbytery. So there are three levels of government: 1) The local church Session, 2) The local Presbytery (ordinarily between 10-15 congregations), and 3) The Synod. Our Presbytery is known as the Pres-bytery of the Great Lakes and includes 24 congregations spread over Western Pennsylvania, Western New York, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. A full 17 of the congregations are located in Western Pennsyl-vania. There are many more congregations in our Presbytery geography who are in the process of discernment and entrance into our body, so multiplication of our Presbytery is imminent and will be undertaken sometime in the next year or two. I happen to be the chair of the Nominating Team so if there is anyone in the congregation who would like to serve on the Presbytery level, your service would be very much valued and appreciated.

The conference itself was very well done and the speakers were extremely effective in developing the theme for our time together which was “From Consumerism to Community.” We thought deeply about developing church fami-lies that thrive not just in the best of times but especially in the challenging times. We considered how so many of the heroes of the Bible were not well resourced materially, but they were given everything that was needed and more to accomplish the mission that God had for them. We also thought about various models of church leadership and how we might be able to think about the way we lead our congregations differently for more impact. Bits and pieces of the material will be integrated into sermons over the next few weeks, so stay tuned. Our days were very full and I extend special thanks to Tom Maxwell and Syndria Lowe for attending the conference as well. They also had a very positive experience and would love to share some of what they experienced and learned.

In the meantime, pray for our church and our denomination that we would be faithful to Christ and would flourish by his grace.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Justin

Thanks to everyone for a great VBS! It takes a lot of people to make the week of Vacation Bible School a success. Some folks can be there each day and others help before

with gifts of generosity. To each person that purchased a kitchen item or donated financially, thank you. A special thank you to McDonald Methodist Church, St. Vincent De Paul and the McDonald's in Imperial for their support.

Thank you also to all of the dedicated volunteers for showering God's love for the week.

A special note of thanks to our VBS kids! Throughout the week, we raised $438.70 for the Operation Kid-to-Kid mission. That means 175 children in India will have clean water at school for a year! That's amazing; you all are so weird!!!

VBS ~ THANK YOU

FUTURE TRAVELERS COHORT

Rev. Justin has been selected for a special Cohort of about 20 ECO pastors who will be undertaking a year-long study of what it means to live missionally as individuals and as a congregation. The program consists of three two-day ses-sions that will be held at different churches across the country that have undertaken certain steps to live missionally. The first session will be held at a church in Canton, Ohio on September 29-30. The facilitator for the program is Alan Hirsch who was the keynote speaker for the 2014 ECO National Gathering. ECO has paid for the sessions and the travel costs will be covered by our pastor’s Study Leave allowance.

As the final major project of the Lighting the Way Campaign, Session has decided to replace a number of large sections of Trinity Center’s roof. While the shingles themselves are less than ten years old, there have been numerous problems ever since the work was com-pleted. Due to improper installation, the repair work is welcome and necessary to secure the future of the facility. Our investment in this work will be just over $30,000.00 and will

essentially replace every section of roof that has failed since installation. When this work is combined with other work that has been completed, approximately 60% of Trinity’s roof will have been replaced since the start of the Lighting The Way campaign. This is in addition to dormer flashing, brick re-pointing, and extensive gutter and downspout repair. This work is scheduled with our contractor to be completed sometime this fall and will answer one of the leading priorities in the Lighting the Way Campaign.

This work is an investment in our future as a congregation who reaches out to the community. Trinity Center is an excellent resource for youth and children’s ministry as well as special projects and programs that will be an important part of our future. Thank you for your amazing support as we live into the future vision of our congregation.

The Lord has opened up an opportunity for us as a congregation to host a Christian counseling center in our fa-cility. The counseling center is located in the Tower Room of Calvary Center which has been refurbished and upgraded according to the requirements of the center. Our partner in this effort is Christian Counseling Associates of Western Pennsylvania. We represent their 29th counseling center and their 11th county. We are told that there is a great demand for reliable Christian Counseling that has a solid Biblical foundation. We are very excited to be playing a part in bringing people into a better relationship with Jesus Christ through this ministry. This organization has seen dramatic growth throughout the greater Pittsburgh region having been founded only five years ago. The center will benefit us by bringing people unassociated with our church into our building and will be a financial blessing to us as well. Our congregation receives a percentage of every client’s counseling fees. Currently the center will be functioning on Thursday afternoon and evening as appointments are sched-uled. Please warmly greet any of the clients or staff that you may encounter as you are in and around our build-ings. Also look for a sign to be placed in our lawn that will identify us as a Christian Counseling Center site. This is the first in a series of articles that will keep you up to date on the activities of the center. For more information go to CCA’s website: www.christiancounselingwpa.com
