It’s that time again…the 43rd Annual Meeting of Shareholders is right around the corner. This year we are celebrating our theme Keeping Culture Alive in honor of our many culture camps. The first one was held in Unalaska in 1997 and now many of our communities come together to share traditional knowledge of Aleut art, culture, traditions and history. Activities include dance, basket weaving, bentwood visor construction, kayak construction, drum making, traditional foods, head dress and regalia sewing, carving, language, history and storytelling.
The two-day Aleut Villages Conference on October 8 and 9, Culture Night on October 9, the Annual Meeting and Banquet on October 10 will all be held at the Egan Center. This year the Akutanam
A{asniikangin dance group from Akutan will perform Friday night and again during the Annual Meeting on Saturday.
New to this year’s series of meetings and events is our first Career Fair named Awan Unangam Quliin “Jobs for Aleuts.” The purpose is introduce our shareholders and descendants to career and training opportunities. TAC’s subsidiary companies, Aleut businesses, other regional organizations, training and educational groups will be at the Egan to:

Where did the summer go? Here in Alaska we pack in a lot while f ishing, hiking and boating during our short 100-day season. This summer at the Aleut Corporation though, it was not all about fun. It was about hard work and dedication to winning government projects. I am pleased to announce that we did win some very lucrative bids.
Aleut Management Services (AMS), our subsidiary in Colorado Springs, CO, and its subsidiary Aleut O&M Services, LLC. (AOMS), had one of their largest wins in the history of the company. AOMS received a $395 million dollar award through the US Air Force to provide services and infrastructure support at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. AOMS is the prime contractor and will work with its partner PAE Applied Technologies, LLC to provide these services to the Air Force. Join me in saying congratulations.
That’s not the total picture. AMS and ARS International (our subsidiary company based in Port Allen, LA) added over $100 million in additional awards.
It has been a winning summerat the Aleut Corporation.
• ARS’s mid-summer RADCON award of $55 million to provide onsite radiological services to a nuclear facility in Oakridge, Tennessee.
• ARS also added another $8 million in sole source government contracts.
• AMS added an additional $46 million with 16 other awards.
That’s a total of $500 million (half a billion dollars) in new awards since April 1.
These recent wins are important because they refl ect improvements to the overall corporation, while beginning a new era of growth. Equally as important, these wins will make a difference in our overall profi tability.
When the Board of Directors brought on TAC’s new management team it was with the expectation that we would return the Aleut Corporation to profi tability by evaluating our subsidiaries and working with them to develop strategic plans for recovery. Doing so, we were able to make improvements in each of their performances.
Our next step for the remaining months of this fi scal year is to focus on improving the return on investment.
It is important to keep in mind that changing a company’s performance is like turning a large ship. It takes time to change direction and make meaningful changes. I am very pleased with our progress thus far and I am confi dent of continued success. As we look toward the 2017 fi scal year we will focus on improving gross margins within each new project we win, so that we can improve our overall net profi ts. In the coming months we will begin our strategic planning and budget process. I am looking forward to working with the Board of Directors on this. Their insight is crucial as we continue our growth.

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – This fall, two Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) alumni will make history at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) as the first tenure-track Alaska Native engineering faculty members. Both Michele Yatchmeneff and Matt Calhoun recently earned their doctorates in engineering and will begin teaching engineering courses during the fall semester of 2015 to develop the next generation of STEM industry professionals in Alaska.
“We’re proud of how far Michele and Matt have come,” said ANSEP Founder and Vice Provost Dr. Herb Ilisaurri Schroeder. “They exemplify the ideal ANSEP students. Their experiences, first as students and later as staff, speak volumes about the long-term impact ANSEP can have and also make them uniquely qualified to encourage other Alaskans to pursue STEM education and careers.”
Dr. Yatchmeneff is a Unangax (Aleut) woman who grew up living a traditional subsistence lifestyle in rural villages along Alaska’s Aleutian chain. She discovered her love of engineering in high school while attending an engineering camp at the University of Denver, and began to immerse herself in several camps and internships. While working toward her undergraduate degree at UAA, Yatchmeneff participated in the ANSEP University Success component. After earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering at UAA, she began working in Alaska’s construction and engineering industry, specializing in water and sewer projects in remote villages across the state. Throughout her school and work experiences, Yatchmeneff felt that there was an ongoing negative
stereotype that came with her Alaska Native heritage. As a result, she returned to ANSEP in 2007 as deputy director, with the goal of motivating other Alaska Native students to earn STEM degrees and join her in combating those stereotypes. Yatchmeneff recently earned her Ph.D. in engineering education from Purdue University.
“ANSEP students inspire me every day because they are knocking down barriers they don’t even realize exist,” said ANSEP Assistant Professor of Engineering Yatchmeneff. “I’m looking forward to helping students learn to navigate the university and getting them excited about their undergraduate engineering degrees.”
Calhoun is an Athabaskan Indian from Homer, Alaska, and has been involved with ANSEP since 1999. After meeting ANSEP Founder Schroeder, Calhoun was inspired to pursue an engineering degree at UAA while participating in the ANSEP University Success component. In 2002, he was one of the first ANSEP students to graduate with his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. From there, Calhoun was employed as a project engineer for three years before returning to ANSEP as a regional director in 2006. Calhoun actively recruited students for ANSEP pre-college components before going outside to earn his master’s in civil engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2010. This year, Matt earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
“I truly believe Alaska needs more homegrown scientists and engineers, and I want to be part of making that happen at ANSEP and at UAA,” said ANSEP Assistant Professor of Engineering Calhoun. “Having more Alaska students with degrees is
key to having a voice in the projects and research that will build Alaska’s future.”
Both Yatchmeneff and Calhoun are now tenure-track faculty members at UAA. During the fall semester, Yatchmeneff will teach Introduction to Engineering as well as two sections of Engineering Economic Analysis and Operations. Calhoun will teach Introduction to Engineering as well as Properties of Materials and its corresponding lab. The two will also continue their work at ANSEP, serving as assistant engineering professors to Dr. Schroeder.
ANSEP’s longitudinal model begins at the middle school level and continues through high school and into college undergraduate, graduate and doctorate programs. Yatchmeneff and Calhoun are among 146 ANSEP scholarship recipients that have graduated from the University of Alaska with bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields. There are currently more than 1,500 students in the ANSEP pipeline.

The Aleut Corporation has launched a new website, www.portofadak.com, showcasing the importance of the Port of Adak’s strategic location and unique capabilities. The deepwater port is accessible year round because unlike most other ports in Alaska, the Port of Adak remains ice-free.
The port’s close proximity to the Arctic makes it a vital tool for a diverse group of Alaska industries, which include transshipping, oilfi eld services, offshore companies, and fi sheries. The Port of Adak
website is the source of information for industry leaders.
“We are thrilled to launch this new site. We see some one-of-a-kind opportunities on the horizon for the Port of Adak,” said Matthew Fagnani, Aleut Corporation CEO. “The Port of Adak is a true gateway to the Arctic. An investment in the Port of Adak is an investment in the future of Alaska’s most valuable and productive industries.”
The new website is a testament to the bright future the Aleut Corporation
envisions for the Port of Adak. Currently the corporation is forming new partnerships with industry leaders, as it positions itself for the future of off-shore oil and gas exploration projects and expansion to arctic shipping routes.
Aleut Corporation Launches New Port of Adak Website

Aang Aang! We had a wonderful summer this year and I hope everyone had a great summer as well. Now, we are busy focusing on the fall and more importantly, the upcoming school year.
The Annual Aleut Picnic was held June 20 at the Aleut Corporation’s offi ce grounds. This was our second year that the picnic was held on a Saturday and we were thrilled to have beautiful weather and a lot of shareholders and descendants in attendance. I even thought we might run out of hamburgers and hot dogs but thank goodness we didn’t. The picnic was held in conjunction with the closing ceremony of the APIA Urban Unangax Culture Camp. Millie McKeown, Cultural Heritage Director, brought over the youths who performed dances. Culture Camp attendees also provided fi sh pies and needless to say, they were the fi rst to go. We would like to thank Dr. Gary Ferguson, TAF Co-Chair, for the wonderful job he did as Emcee!
