@ CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

JUNE 2015

Have you ever wanted to make a positive impact on your community and help those in need? If so, do we ever have an awesome Reach event for you!

Cornerstone Christian Church will be hosting the Annual Perry County Work Camp this year. The work camp has occurred for the past 13 years and has allowed mem- bers from several local churches to help countless individuals, right here in Perry County.

Perry County is one of the poorest counties in Pennsylvania and has many elderly, dis- abled, and poverty-stricken families. There are homes in our county that have no electricity or running water. While we can not solve all of these problems, we are compelled to assist those in our community.

We are looking for your help in making this year’s work camp a success. To do so, we need donations and volun-teers. Work camp is a week-long endeavor from June 8 to

June 12. During this time we will serve breakfast, supply food to pack lunches, put in a full work day from 7am to 4pm, and then dine together for our evening meal.

We will need funding for the projects and food donations, carpenters, painters, drywallers, flooring installers, land- scapers, and of course, cooks! Whether skilled or unskilled, we can use your help! There will be plenty of jobs to go around. You can find informa- tion about volunteering on the church Web site (www.cccduncannon/#/reach/perry-county- work-camp) or at the Welcome Center.

We are also accepting applications for work projects that need to be completed. If you need assistance or know of anyone residing in Perry County who needs some help, please complete or encourage them to complete an application for home repairs. These applications can also be found at the Welcome Center or on the church’s Web site.

Taking care of business

With apologies to Bachman Turner Overdrive, Cor- nerstone is taking care of business at our Annual Summer Meeting on June 28 after the

10:30am service. If you remember, at our usual annual meeting in January we decided to shift our annual budget year to run from July 1 to June 30 instead of by the regu-lar calendar dates of January 1 to December 31. Because of that, we will be reviewing and voting on the 2015/2016 budget at a “summer” meeting. Other church business, like affirming church officers and Elders, will still happen at our “winter” meeting in January. Everyone at Cornerstone is encouraged to attend these meetings, but only church part-ners can vote to approve the annual budget. The church will send a draft budget via email to all partners before the meeting for review. Paper copies will also be available at the Welcome Center.

Nancy’s Soft Pretzels

If something smells good coming from the kitchen at Cornerstone on Sat-

urday, June 6, that would be Nancy’s Soft Pretzels baking for their next pretzel sale! Stop by the church on June 6 from 11am–2pm and pick up a few pretzels. Cost is $18 per dozen, $10 for a half dozen, or $2 for one pretzel. Avail-able flavors are regular, sugar and cinnamon, onion, garlic, and sour cream and onion. Pre-order by calling 503-5588. A bag of pretzel nuggets is also available for $15.

He’s making an impact

Each May WGAL-TV 8, along with Rotary Club District 7390, honors teachers with Teacher Impact Awards, recognizing teachers currently

teaching in grades Pre-K through 12 who have made a significant difference, academically and personally, in the lives of their students. Students are strongly encouraged to nominate a teacher, but anyone, including parents, admin-istrators, or other co-workers, may submit a nomination form and a written account of how this person has posi-tively impacted their lives or the lives of students in their local school.

This year Rick Knepp of Susquenita Middle School was one of the teach-ers selected for this award. Rick teaches 8th grade physical science at Susquenita Middle School and is the high school cross country coach. He is currently in his 36th year of teaching at Susquenita.

Rick and his fellow award recipients were honored at a banquet on May 11 at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey Hotel. Each teacher was also profiled in vignettes aired on “News 8 at 5” newscasts. Although Rick’s story was aired on May 22, a 30-minute Teacher Impact Awards compilation will air on WGAL 8.1 on Monday, June 15 at 7pm and Sunday, June 21 at 1:30pm. The special will also air on WGAL 8.2 MeTV on Monday, June 15 at 10:30pm.

Helping in a time of need

Cornerstone’s facilities are sometimes used for receptions following funeral services. Our Reach Director, Keith Wilson, is working on forming a

—for want of a better name—Funeral Committee to organize and plan for these receptions. Deb Reed has agreed to be the point person to meet with the family and then coordinate the team and needed food and supplies. Thanks, Deb!

If you would like to be a part of this team, either serving at the receptions or providing food, please contact Deb ([email protected]).

Thank you!Megan Safko, Connections Director

We had an awesome day honoring our military and raising money for our

veterans at Pushups for Charity on Saturday, May 16. We are still calculat-ing and collecting donations, but we have raised more than $4,000 so far. All of that money, and any additional collected, will be donated to the Boot Campaign to assist veterans with counseling, housing, job placement/training, medical costs, and more. We had 78 people complete 4,416 pushups, plus many more counting pushups and cheering everyone on.

But most importantly, we couldn’t have done it without you! To everyone that volunteered, and those who jumped into help and faced the monsoon, thank you for giving up your Saturday to help reach our community, honor our

veterans, and raise money for a great organization!

If you couldn’t participate in this event, make sure you check out some upcoming ways to get connected and reach out this summer! There’s information here in the newsletter about a number of opportunities or you can check out our Web site, cccduncannon.com.

On behalf of the Lauver family, we want to thank all the members of our church family for the love, kindness, and support shown to us after the recent death of our father, Larry Lauver. To all who helped with preparation, serving, and clean up with the services at the church —thank you so much. How kind you all were that day. What a blessing to us and all those in attendance! Since then I’ve had many people express to me very favorable comments on our church family and how wonderful the services and Pastor David’s message were. My family is overwhelmed by God’s love ex-pressed through others.Love, Melanie and Michael Boyer, Carol Lauver and family

Elvis is in the building!

Our own Elvis, Denny Heck-ard, will be appearing at Cornerstone on Saturday,

July 18 from 5:30 to 9pm for three big shows. Tickets are $12 per per-son, and available by calling Denny Heckard (443-7222), Jen’s Jems (567-0400), or the church office (834-4641). The pice includes drinks and snacks. All proceeds benefit our next Haiti missions trip.

Celebrate • Connect • ReachListen up on Sunday morningsSeries: Summer Sermons on the MountSynopsis: This series goes section-by-section through the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus explains the difference between mere religion and true spirituality.

May 31 • Don’t hide Your HappinessScripture • Matthew 5:1–16

Takeaway • As we look at this list of “bless-eds,” we see that happiness comes through surrendering ourselves to God, giving Him control of our lives, and serving others with a heart of compassion.

June 7 • The Cure for ConflictScripture • Matthew 5:17–26

Takeaway • If you just want to be religious, then all you have to do (in regards to this topic) is keep the command-ment that says “Do not kill.” But if you want to be spiritual, then you have apply that commandment to your heart.

June 14 • How to Defeat Sin’s StrongholdScripture • Matthew 5:27–30

Takeaway • Paul said, “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” (Romans 6:14) God created us to be victorious over sin—even the biggest one of all—the one that has your name on it.

June 28 • Who Do You Answer to?Scripture • Matthew 5:31–37

Takeaway • We can save ourselves and others a lot of frustration if we are careful with promises. The key is not to get people to believe the promises we make; the key is to only make promises we have the power to keep.

Rocks of AgesKatrina Boyer

The Rocks of Ages is planning a trip to the Carlisle Sports Emporium on Saturday, June 13 at 5:30pm. This will be a family-friendly event and

all are welcome. The Sports Emporium’s Web page is www.carlislesportsemporium.com. Information regarding costs and such is on the Web page and will also be sent out in a Rocks of Ages email. Anyone who is interested in get-ting the information can email us at CornerstonesRocks [email protected], and we will forward the documents to you. The venue has many opportunities for fun—laser tag, two different mini-golf courses, two go-cart tracks, an arcade, and even roller skating!

Anyone who is interested in laser tag as a group should contact Katrina ([email protected] or by text or phone 514-2375) no later than June 10. Laser tag must be prepaid to guarantee everyone can play together. There are some great savings opportunities, so if you’re planning to go, be sure to check out the Sports Emporium’s page. There are also some really nice savings packages at Groupon.com, so if you’re planning to go, you can save a little bit of money! (I got a $30 gift certificate for about $18, and there is a “fantastic play” offer—$28.50 for laser tag, a go-cart ride, a $3 “play card” for the ar-cade, and a choice between another go-cart or a round of mini golf! What a bargain!)

This is going to be a fun-filled event for everyone, and we hope to see you there! Don’t forget to let me know by June 10 if you’re planning to attend so I can let the Carlisle Sports Emporium people know how many to expect. (Also tell me if you are planning to do laser tag or not.)

If you are not already a member of the Facebook page, Cornerstones Rocks of Ages, look us up! We want to use this as a place to connect as a group. So if you are “some-where in the middle” between the Young Adults and the Seniors, come check us out—Cornerstones Rocks of Ages is the group for you!

Life and friendsAndy Rooney

I’ve learned … that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I’ve learned … that when you’re in love, it shows.

I’ve learned … that just one person saying to me, “You’ve made my day!” makes my day.

I’ve learned … that having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I’ve learned … that being kind is more important than being right.

I’ve learned … that you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I’ve learned … that I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help him in some other way.

I’ve learned … that no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I’ve learned … that sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I’ve learned … that simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I’ve learned … that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I’ve learned … that we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.

I’ve learned … that money doesn’t buy class.

I’ve learned … that it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I’ve learned … that under everyone’s hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I’ve learned … that the Lord didn’t do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?

I’ve learned … that to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I’ve learned … that when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I’ve learned … that love, not time, heals all wounds.

I’ve learned … that the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

I’ve learned … that everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I’ve learned … that there’s nothing sweeter than sleeping with your babies and feeling their breath on your cheeks.

I’ve learned … that no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I’ve learned … that life is tough, but I’m tougher.

I’ve learned … that opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I’ve learned … that when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I’ve learned … that I wish I could have told my Mom that I love her one more time before she passed away.

I’ve learned … that one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I’ve learned … that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I’ve learned … that I can’t choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.

I’ve learned … that when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you’re hooked for life.

I’ve learned … that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.

I’ve learned … that it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is requested and when it is a life-threaten-ing situation.

I’ve learned … that the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

I wondered why somebody didn’t do something. Then I realized, I am somebody.

The most important missionary journey a person can make is to walk next door.

STUDENT MINISTRIES • KIDS

Hey, parents, if your kids would like to help lead the worship during VBS, please join us for prac-tices beginning Sunday, June 7 between our two

Celebration services.

MANDATORY VBS volunteer meetingStephanie Morris

On Sunday, June 7 at 7pm and Sunday, June 14 at 10:30am there will be organizational meetings for Cornerstone’s VBS. If you would

like to volunteer to help with VBS (and we hope you do!), you MUST attend ONE of these meetings. Both meetings will be exactly the same. If you need help with childcare, we recommend you attend the meeting on June 14 and take advantage our Cornerstone’s new Clubhouse format for your elementary-age children or our nursery for your younger ones. The meetings should only last for one hour.

WHAT do we need help with? There are SO many things we need help with … some involve teaching, leading a group of children for the week, setting up, tearing down, decorating, preparing snacks, collecting and organizing materials, staffing the nursery, and preparing meals for the volunteers. We can find a place for you if you are interested in helping! Each year, Cornerstone reaches 100+ children in the Duncannon area. Don’t miss out on this fun week—I promise you will be blessed! If you only have a small amount of time to volunteer for Children’s Ministry, THIS is the event to help with.

WHO can help? Anyone who meets this description may help: adults and youth with a fun, positive attitude, a heart for Christ, and a clear record (clearances are a must for ev-eryone 18 and older). Did you notice that you do not have to have any experience with children? That’s right! Give it a try … it is SO MUCH FUN!

Any questions may be directed to Stephanie Morris ([email protected]).

This is it folks—it’s finally summer and VBS is fast approaching! I hope you are excited!! Each year, Cornerstone reaches 100+ children at our VBS.

Soon you will notice snowy mountain top decorations pop-ping up all around the church lobby. When you see them … that’s your cue … VBS is coming soon!

VBS will be held Sunday, August 2 through Thursday, August 6 starting at 6pm each night. The fun week will conclude with a family picnic on Sunday, August 9 after the 2nd service. We will begin pre-registering children ages 3 through 6th grade in the next few weeks. Around the same time, we will be asking you to donate or lend mate-rials that we will need to make this year’s VBS fabulous. Look for the special EVEREST table in the lobby, coming soon.

If you are interested in helping with VBS, please see the article titled “MANDATORY VBS meeting.” Any questions may be directed to Stephanie Morris ([email protected]).

On Saturday, June 20 the Duncannon Outdoor Club (DOC) will be hiking at the Cornerstone Trails. This is a slower-paced, 1.14-mile hike

through woods and fields, mostly on wide paths. It is a hike for the whole family, especially for children ages 5 and up. Try and find as many things as you can to check off your scavenger list. Meet at the Cornerstone Christian Church in Duncannon at 9am. To register, contact Deb Takach (395-2462 or [email protected]). After the hike, be sure to attend the Duncannon Appalachian Trail Festival from 12noon–4pm on High Street in Duncannon.

Going for a drive

The Disabled American Veter-ans Chapter 49 is looking for qualified drivers interested in

transporting Perry County veterans to the VA clinics and the VA Medical Cen-ter in Lebanon. Volunteers do not have to be veterans—just have a clean driv-ing record. The DAV is experiencing a critical shortage in drivers, limiting its ability to take veterans to medical ap-pointments five days a week.

If you’re interested in helping, call the DAV Chapter 49 Transportation Coor- dinator, Lambert Porter (756-5513).

VBS decorating“Setting the Stage”

In August, our Kids Ministry team will lead our kids on an expedition of mountainous proportions at EVEREST, our summer VBS program. We’re looking for some volun-

teers to help set the stage and transform our church into an icy mountain adventure! Whether you can draw, paint, cre-ate or just hang some banners—we need your help! Join us at a planning meeting in the Green Room on Sunday, June 14 during the 2nd service. If you’re interested in be-ing a part of this team, but can’t make the meeting, email Megan Safko ([email protected]).

Introducing Cornerstone’s Kids new “Clubhouse”

Starting May 31 during the 2nd service, Corner- stone’s Kids “Clubhouse” will be offered to children in kindergarten through 4th grade.

Clubhouse is specifically designed for children who have already attended our regular Sunday School program during the 1st service, but need to stay for the 2nd service because their parent(s) are involved in ministry. The Club-house is replacing Children’s Church.

What is the Clubhouse? At the clubhouse, your children will be supervised while they craft, sing, play games, play on the playground, etc. Each week will be different, depend-ing on the weather and the preferences of the volunteers.

If you are interested in helping as a volunteer at the club-house, I would love to hear from you. Any youth and adults who like to play and have fun with children are welcome to help! Please contact Stephanie Morris ([email protected]) for more information.

by escorting your child to his or her classroom, signing him or her in on the clipboard, and then returning at the end of service to sign the child out. This will be mandatory for all children through 6th grade. If your child comes for the 1st service and will be staying for 2nd service, you will need to return to sign your child in and out between services, and they will be the parent’s responsibility between services. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support. Any questions may be directed to Stephanie Morris ([email protected]).

addresses of everyone who regularly attends Cor- nerstone are available at the Welcome Center in the church lobby. The Direc- tory also includes a “business directory.” If you own a business or have skills/talents you’re willing to share with the Cornerstone family, get listed! Submit new or omitted information to Pam Hoover ([email protected] or 829-5211).

Going green!

We’ve got new recycling bins located outside the kitchen under the tables in the hall-

way. Anyone that works in the kitchen for any functions or activites or uses other church supplies—check and see if you can recycle the packaging. The bins are marked for a number of recyclable items. Go green!

Leadership means getting people to think, believe, see, and do what they might not have without you. It means possessing the vision to set the right goal. It means being aware of the fears and anxieties felt by those you lead even as you urge them to overcome those fears.Bill Bradley

True friendship isn’t about being there when it’s convenient. It’s be-ing there when it’s not.

Follow along

We’re offering an interactive way for you to follow along with the Sunday morning sermons

through a FREE App and Web site called You Version. Go to youversion.com for the Bible portion of the program, and youversion.com/live where you’ll type in our zip code (17020) for the ability to fol-low along with the sermon on your iPhone while Pastor David delivers the message. It’s a great way to get into the Word and follow the messages. Check it out!

Need a new box of offering envelopes? Just stop by the Welcome Center on Sunday

mornings and pick up a box.

Worrying won’t stop the bad stuff from happening. It just stops you from enjoying the good.
