FARMING DIARY

The wet winter finally arrived and allowed pumping to start from the River Ouse to fill the reservoirs for summer irrigation. Pumping from the river under strict control from the EA takes place during the winter months and is shared among 4 farms in the local area, extracting approx 3Mgal/day. Completion of pumping is expected late Feb-ruary. The weather has allowed small windows of opportunity to prepare land for this seasons vegetable/root crops. Soil analyses have been completed and the relevant nutritional requirements have been calculated beginning with ma-nure (FYM/poultry) being spread and incorporated in front of carrots, onions, potatoes and sugar beet crops. A proportion of early carrots have been sown under polythene to keep soil temps up and help facilitate early harvest-ing. Sugar beet yields continue to be well above average and to allow the processing factories to manage this lar-ger crop, harvesting will continue until early March. The lambs are fattening well on the turnips and the cattle are fed their rations daily throughout the winter. The young piglets certainly don’t like this wet weather and fresh straw bedding has become a daily routine. With adverse weather at this time of year please be mindful of poor road conditions particularly near field gate-ways, we will endeavor to minimize any disruption.

Croxton Village Fete, Saturday 12th May 2018

We are planning a traditional Fete with stalls, sideshows, competitions plus tea, cakes and beer. All proceeds to be divided between The Village Hall, Croxton Club and YANA a charity that helps farming

families affected by mental health problems. Any one interested in helping or having a stall please contact: Ashley Tei, Clare Mead, Leah Claydon, Tina

Miles, Bev White, Emma Grist, Julie Eagle or leave message 01842 766232

CONSERVATION

We all take conservation very seriously on the farm land around Croxton. At Croxton Park, over 90 species of birds

have been recorded plus the uptake of the 100 nest boxes. The boxes have already been cleaned out ready for use this

year - this should be done prior to 21 February. Staff from the British Trust for Ornithology regularly ring birds at the

Salix site. After establishing age and sex, weighing and measuring a bird, a small metal ring with a unique number is

loosely fixed around the bird's right leg. The BTO retains all the information on birds ringed all over the uk. Monitor-

ing the birds movements is interesting - some ringed at Croxton have been retrapped in Italy and Scotland. If anyone

would like to see a ringing session please email [email protected] Melinda Raker
