CROXTON CHURCH NEWS Our Christmas Carol service and Christmas Eve service were both very well
attended. Thank you to all who, read lessons, decorated the Church and provided
refreshments. It was a happy time to be together and started Croxton’s Christmas
celebrations with a warm feeling.
If all goes well our Chancel handrail may well be in place for Easter Day! The
decoration work in the Vestry and South aisle will hopefully be completed once
the weather is warmer which will ensure the success of the plastering.
Matthew Findlay will be cutting down the dead chestnut tree and tidying up other
branches and bushes in the churchyard during March. Any offers of help to
moved wood into a trailer will be gratefully received – please phone Gerald
Goucher 752100 or [email protected]
CROXTON VILLAGE SOCIAL CLUB - (Former RNA Club)
Croxton Village Social Club News
In accordance with direction received from the RNA the Thetford Branch entered into a period of transition on 1 Jan 18 due to not enough Navy members. As a result of previous work from the committee Croxton Village Social Club Ltd was registered as a mutual cooperative society with the Financial Conduct Authority on 19th Dec and now provides the legal framework within which to run the Club. Also a quote of £1200 had been received from Ashtons to establish the viability of challenging the RNA’s legal claim on the land following the RNA mandated detachment. At an EGM in December the members gave the following direction to the committee: 1 - Ashtons should be engaged with funding coming from donations (£1500 raised so far). 2 - The RNA sign should be replaced with a temporary social club sign. 3 – The new annual membership fee will be £10 per person. The commit-tee would like to thank those people, many of whom were not members, who gener-ously donated to the legal costs. The future may be unknown but your village club remains open for business and is actively looking for new members.

FARMING DIARY
The wet winter finally arrived and allowed pumping to start from the River Ouse to fill the reservoirs for summer irrigation. Pumping from the river under strict control from the EA takes place during the winter months and is shared among 4 farms in the local area, extracting approx 3Mgal/day. Completion of pumping is expected late Feb-ruary. The weather has allowed small windows of opportunity to prepare land for this seasons vegetable/root crops. Soil analyses have been completed and the relevant nutritional requirements have been calculated beginning with ma-nure (FYM/poultry) being spread and incorporated in front of carrots, onions, potatoes and sugar beet crops. A proportion of early carrots have been sown under polythene to keep soil temps up and help facilitate early harvest-ing. Sugar beet yields continue to be well above average and to allow the processing factories to manage this lar-ger crop, harvesting will continue until early March. The lambs are fattening well on the turnips and the cattle are fed their rations daily throughout the winter. The young piglets certainly don’t like this wet weather and fresh straw bedding has become a daily routine. With adverse weather at this time of year please be mindful of poor road conditions particularly near field gate-ways, we will endeavor to minimize any disruption.

Croxton Village Fete, Saturday 12th May 2018
We are planning a traditional Fete with stalls, sideshows, competitions plus tea, cakes and beer. All proceeds to be divided between The Village Hall, Croxton Club and YANA a charity that helps farming
families affected by mental health problems. Any one interested in helping or having a stall please contact: Ashley Tei, Clare Mead, Leah Claydon, Tina
Miles, Bev White, Emma Grist, Julie Eagle or leave message 01842 766232
CONSERVATION
We all take conservation very seriously on the farm land around Croxton. At Croxton Park, over 90 species of birds
have been recorded plus the uptake of the 100 nest boxes. The boxes have already been cleaned out ready for use this
year - this should be done prior to 21 February. Staff from the British Trust for Ornithology regularly ring birds at the
Salix site. After establishing age and sex, weighing and measuring a bird, a small metal ring with a unique number is
loosely fixed around the bird's right leg. The BTO retains all the information on birds ringed all over the uk. Monitor-
ing the birds movements is interesting - some ringed at Croxton have been retrapped in Italy and Scotland. If anyone
would like to see a ringing session please email [email protected] Melinda Raker
