On this fourth Sunday the scripture readings are alive with excitement about the Saviour who is coming very soon. It is no surprise that the spotlight is focussed on Mary because no one can help us to understand the meaning of Christmas better than Mary. The visitation to her cousin Elizabeth is more than a happy exchange of support between two women sharing the joys of pregnancy. Its a story of faith as well as friendship and human love. Elizabeth clearly recognises that Mary is carrying Jesus the image of the unseen God when she says: Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? What a warm welcome the unborn Christ child received at Elizabeths home in contrast to the cool welcome he would receive in Bethlehem when there was no room for them in the Inn. Mary reveals in living colour how all Christians are to await Christ. She was carrying him as a gift to a world in need and we are to do likewise. We are signs of his presence when we give ourselves to others – and what better time than at Christmas, when we meet family and friends with warmth and added feeling. Its a social celebration of family, food and fun and its joy should not be spoiled by somebody being left out because they are not considered suitable or worthy enough to take part in our festivities. At Christmas everybody ought to feel like an insider, but society doesnt work that way and a lot of people feel more outside than they have ever been in their lives. Let s not forget the humble origins of Jesus, born into our world of pain and sorrow, in a stable on the very bottom of the social ladder. All our celebrations are an empty sham if Jesus is not born into our hearts. Good things need to be done at a deeper level out of love and affection and a spirit of generosity. The gifts that we give have no purpose unless God is part of the giving and unless we make Christmas a pattern to be followed in everyday living. Like Mary we are all invited in our own lives to do the will of God. Perhaps this year a neighbour or an old friend has to spend Christmas in hospital or away from the security of family. It could be that old age has taken its toll and the Lord has called someone home leaving a vacant chair at home. A visit made there in the spirit of Mary to Elizabeth will always be appreciated and will bring loving warmth and badly needed company. It is one sure way of offering the perfect Christmas gift saying to God as Mary did, Here I am Lord, Ive come to do your will.Advent Blessings, Pa Peter There will be no further newsletters until mid January.

With Christmas just around the corner, the days of Advent waiting are almost over.

On this fourth Sunday the scripture readings are alive with excitement about the Saviour who is coming very soon. It is no surprise

that the spotlight is focussed on Mary because no one can help us to understand the

meaning of Christmas better than Mary. The visitation to her cousin Elizabeth is more

than a happy exchange of support between two women sharing the joys of pregnancy.

It’s a story of faith as well as friendship and human love. Elizabeth clearly recognises that

Mary is carrying Jesus the image of the unseen God when she says: “Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?” What a warm welcome the

unborn Christ child received at Elizabeth’s home in contrast to the cool welcome he would receive in Bethlehem when there

was no room for them in the Inn.

Mary reveals in living colour how all Christians are to await Christ. She was

carrying him as a gift to a world in need and we are to do likewise. We are signs of

his presence when we give ourselves to others – and what better time than at

Christmas, when we meet family and friends with warmth and added feeling. It’s a social celebration of family, food and fun and its

joy should not be spoiled by somebody being left out because they are not considered suitable or worthy enough to take part in

our festivities.

At Christmas everybody ought to feel like an insider, but society doesn’t work that way and a lot of people feel more outside than

they have ever been in their lives. Let’s not forget the humble origins of Jesus, born into

our world of pain and sorrow, in a stable on the very bottom of the social ladder.

All our celebrations are an empty sham if Jesus is not born into our hearts. Good things need to be done at a deeper level out of love

and affection and a spirit of generosity. The gifts that we give have no purpose unless

God is part of the giving and unless we make Christmas a pattern to be followed

in everyday living.

Like Mary we are all invited in our own lives to do the will of God. Perhaps this year a neighbour or an old friend has to spend Christmas in hospital or away from the

security of family. It could be that old age has taken its toll and the Lord has called

someone home leaving a vacant chair at home.

A visit made there in the spirit of Mary to Elizabeth will always be appreciated and

will bring loving warmth and badly needed company. It is one sure way of offering the

perfect Christmas gift saying to God as Mary did, ‘Here I am Lord, I’ve come
