MAIN RESEARCH INTERESTS

Electrofluidodynamic technologies (EDFT) for tissue regeneration /degeneration, cell and molecular therapy:

- Design and production of micro and nanostructured platforms by electrospinning technique to be used as 3D models for tissue regeneration and cancer therapy.

- Preparation of ECM analogues by intrusion of functionalized hydrogels in electrospinning matrices (nanofiber reinforced hydrogels).

- Implementation of deposition strategies to assign a preordered structural anisotropy to electrospun membranes by controlling the fibre alignment.

- Additive Electrospraying technology for coatings or molecular functionalization of scaffolds and biomedical devices for tissue engineering and molecular delivery;

- Design of microcapsules (monocomponent, core shell) via ElectroDynamic Atomization technology for oral delivery.

Multifunctional device with conductive properties for regenerative medicine:

- Composite fibres including polyaniline nanoneedles for myocardium and brain regeneration;

- Electrosensitive films with piezoelectric properties made of PVDF;.

- Nerve conduits for peripheral nerve regeneration;

- Hybrid porous hydrogels with conductive phases for nerve applications;

Design and Fabrication of 3D Porous Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering:

Study of materials and process technologies to develop porous scaffolds with suitable features to induce the regeneration of several tissues (i.e, bone, cartilagineous and osteochondral tissues, nerve, skeletal muscle and myocardium, tendons) by different processing techniques:

- Phase inversion/salt leaching;

- Photopolimerization/salt leaching;

- Thermally induced phase separation (TIPS);

- Polymer blending under co-continuity regime;

- Microsphere sintering;

Injectable Composite Cements for Functional Restoration of Hard Tissues:

Chemical formulation of calcium phosphates; Optimization of self-setting and hardening reaction of alpha-tricalium phosphates. Development of composite cements by adding hydrogel polymers (i.e, Polyvinilalcohol, polyhydroxymethylmeacrilate) and their characteriation. Implementation of new cement formulations able to immobilize and subsequently release bioactive molecules.

Structural and Functional Characterization of Biomaterials:

- Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) under different working conditions: High Vacuum, Low Vacuum, and Environmental mode (ESEM);

- Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM);.

- Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM);

- 2D Image Analysis for porosity measurements;
