  • 2The Nelson Beamer: Teamwork is its strength

The Nelson Beamer isan innovative devicefor controlled Argonplasma coagulation.

    Nelson stands for New Electrosurgical

    Solutions and constitutes a new

generation of Aesculap devices in the

crme de la crme of electrosurgery.

    Argon-enhanced electrosurgery

Argon plasma coagulation and argon plasma cutting are theideal complement to electrosurgery. Innovative safety and per-formance functions, as well as a precise and easy-to-regulatepower supply, optimize argon-enhanced electrosurgery.

Argon plasma coagulation is a monopolar procedure involvingthe noncontact application of electrical current to tissue withthe aid of ionized argon gas. This technology is now widely usedin both endoscopic and open surgery.

    Indications

General surgery Liver surgery Gynecology Plastic and reconstructive surgery E.N.T. Cardiac and thoracic surgery Bronchoscopy Laparoscopy and pelviscopy Gastroenterology

The Nelson Beamer is the ideal complement to the entire familyof Aesculap electrosurgery units.

Once a sufficiently high level of voltage has been achieved andthe gap between the electrode and tissue is narrow enough, aconductive electrical field - the argon plasma - is establishedbetween the electrode and the tissue. The argon plasma thenacts as a conduit for the electrosurgical current that flows between the electrode and the tissue.

  • 3The Nelson Beamer delivers optimal coagulation oflarger areas of diffuse bleeding.

    No tissue adherence

Argon plasma coagulation is performed without touching thetissue. This prevents tissues from sticking to active electrodes.

Coagulation is complete and evenly distributed

Whats special about argon-enhanced coagulation is that thestream of argon plasma is distributed not only in a straight linebut can also be applied laterally and at an angle. Surfaces that have already been coagulated manifest a high le-vel of resistance; bleeding or insufficiently coagulated surfaceshave low resistance. The argon plasma flow automatically sear-ches for the least resistant tissue areas within the applicationregion.

Tissue-sparing procedure with less blood loss

As an inert gas, argon creates a protective gas atmosphere, thereby preventing oxygen from infiltrating the coagulation site. The tissue surface in argon coagulation is more flexible and lessnecrotic than that of conventional spray coagulation (up to amaximum of 3 mm). The result: more reliable tissue closure andenhanced wound healing.

    Minimal smoke and odour

In endoscopic applications, smoke generation should be kept toa minimum. Minimal smell put less strain on O.R. personnel, particularly during long operations.

    Advantages of the Nelson Beamer

  • 4The Nelson Beamers safety features

    Selftest

After being switched on, the Argon control unit runs a selftest during which the operational components, micro-processor, hardware functions and warning signal are checked.

    Continuous function monitoring

While the device is operating, all relevant functions and signals are checked at frequent intervals, thereby ensuring optimal safety.

    Gas pressure monitoring

In endoscopic procedures, argon gas increases the intra-abdominal pressure. In order to minimize the risk of emphysema, the Nelson Beamer continuously checks the intraabdominal pressure (at the distal end of the electrode) that is set on the unit. This function is of particular relevance with insufflation devices that do not have an automatic gas release function.

    At Aesculap we putsafety first.

    Continuous monitoring of all

key parameters by the device ensures

    optimal patient safety.

    Monitoring gas level

The level of gas in the argon bottle is indicated both visually and in percentage points. If pressure in the argon gas bottle decreases to less than 30 bar (15 percent of the remaining gas), a warning signal sounds and the color of the bottle icon chan-ges from green to red.

    Gas flow individually programmable

Gas flow can be set separately for cut/coag in order to meet specific requirements. The desired gas flow rate is set by pressing a key on the device, and is monitored continually while the device is in operation.

  • 5Documentation of error codes

When the Nelson electrosurgical device andNelson Beamer are used together, errors in theNelson Beamer are automatically saved in amemory. This promotes rapid evaluation of thesources of errors.

  • 6The Nelson Beamers comfort features

    Saving data

The argon control unit is outfitted with sevendifferent memory locations. Memory location 1(GEN-SURG) contains the standard values forthe application of rigid electrodes. Memory lo-cation 2 (ENDO) is intended for use with en-doscopic procedures that employ flexible pro-bes. The other memory locations can be pro-grammed individually and saved under a freelyselectable name.

    Measurement of gas consumption

The quantity of gas consumed is displayed as adigital value in liters. This digital value can bereset at any time (e.g. in order to measure gasconsumption per operation).

CIDS allows you to seeeverything at

a glance!Never before has anyAesculap information system been easier to

    understand. The displaychanges according to

application. In each case, the active output can be

clearly discerned thanks tothe heightened contrast of

the card displayed on the screen.

    CIDS (Colour Information Display System)

The Nelson Beamer is equipped with the unique colour information display system (CIDS). All important information isunambiguously and clearly displayed on a central informationdisplay.

  • 7Automatic instrument recognition

The Aesculap electrosurgical device Nelson deluxe recognizescoded, connected instruments automatically and (likewise auto-matically) sets all predefined parameters. The Nelson Beamerthen receives the necessary information via the interface cableand sets the corresponding parameters on its side.

Twisted cables are a thing of the past

The gas tube can be attached without twisting. It is tighteneddown at the device with a locking wheel.

Unobstructed view of the colour display

The optimal height of the equipment trolley (which was especially designed for the Nelson family of products) allows for a direct view of the color display with optimal contrast.

    Communication

The Nelson Deluxe and Nelson Beamer electrosurgery devicescommunicate with each other via an intelligent CAN bus interface.

    Generous gas capacity

The unique design of the (optional) equipment trolley allowsthe provision of two 10-liter bottles of argon gas. This reducesthe frequency of bottle changes. Nelson Beamer can also beconnected to the main gas supply.
