Happy March!!!!

Hope this finds you well! The weather lately has been alittle sporadic but has offered us some extremely goodopportunities to ride. We really need the rain to get outof this drought. Maybe we can wish for rain on theweekdays except Thursdays and bright sunny skies onthe weekends

As Sal mentioned we had a beautiful ride on Saturday,February 22. Thanks to all that participated.

At the March Chapter meeting I will announce Coupleof the Year as well as Individual of the Year. You mustbe present to win (just kidding). I was going toannounce it last chapter meeting, but received a callfrom Sal just before leaving our house saying noelectricity. Speaking of our monthly meeting place, Salhas been in touch with another establishment of thesame name in Santa Clara. We plan on having breakfastthere in March to see how well they have it together.Sal also says that they have a room with a door, whichmeans we can be as loud as we want. Fun, Fun, FUN!Rocky and Roger will be able to give their safetypresentations without a whole lot of outside noise too!We will keep you posted!

I just finished going through my trike in the hopes ofmaking some looong rides later this year. Timing belts, all fluids, new windshield, button install on radio toeliminate cassette tape for mp3, gear shift stabilizer, airfilter, and the list goes on…. Hopefully we can have awork shop at our house soon for whoever needs smallmaintenance taken care of, or just to sit around eatdoughnuts (or pizza) and chat.

Not much on words this month. Actually, as time goeson it gets harder and harder for me to write thesenewsletters. Sal does such a fantastic job on his, also onthe after ride commentaries too!

Chapter Director’s MessageIt would be nice is if we could get more input from ourparticipants. Maybe you could share an interestingmotorcycle adventure, or something that you havelearned in the past to be a better rider?

In closing I would like again to thank all the folks thatkeep this Chapter moving!!!

No Power Chapter Meeting, Feb 15

That's what we found at the Home Town Buffet when wearrived for our regular CA2S meeting - NO POWER.

The entire McCarthy Ranch shopping center and surroundingareas was out of power. According to the Home Buffetmanager they would not open until about noon.We had no choice but to cancel the meeting for thismonth. Thanks to all of you who did show up.

Yep, we had some disappointed folks. Gary and Lori rode allthe way down from Manteca to join the festivities. Loricomplained (and I quote) "I had to get up at the butt crackdawn to get here!" Now that shows some real CA2Sspirit. We all had a good laugh about power outage - whatelse could we do.

Harry gathered up a group andwent down to the Black BearDiner for breakfast. Patti andI hung out till almost 9 in caseothers showed up.

We did have one fellow show up on a vintage 80's (?)GW. He came in response to our Craigslist ad. We hope tosee him in March. On that note another responded to the adso we got two "nibbles".

Patti an I joined the raucous group at Black Bear. In typical2S fashion we had a great time. We enjoyed a goodbreakfast. Harry was kinda surprised at the helping size of hisbiscuits and gravy. Nothin' holds us back from FUN. Wespent time telling motorcycle stores, ride stories, talkin' aboutthe rest of you, and how we are "one big haaaaaaaaapyfamily".

All and all we made lemonade outta lemons and had a greattime in spite of "HAVING NO POWER"

Last Planning Meeting, Feb 4, Rocky had the misfortuneto unknowingly misplace his wallet. It was eventuallyfound by another customer in the men’s room, less thecash he had in it earlier. Thanks to the kind person whofound it, and went looking for its owner.

Rocky’s good words:Last night folks was a shining example of the GWRRAfamily coming together to help a fellow winger. Theconcern, empathy, and good old fashion caring got methrough the terrifying moment. Thank God for thatyoung man coming forward. Those that offered toreward him and loan me money if needed, afterconsoling me, will not be forgotten. As I said GWRRA atits best.Thank you all for your support.

No Ride for Kids FebruaryIn reading my March Readers Digest, I came across theEveryday Heros article for this month; Meet the ParentsFighting to End Pediatric Cancer.

The first story states that cancer is the number one killerdisease for children and many people are unaware of this fact. The foundations and websites listed are not on our radar, albeit they are all worthy fundraisers for important work, theRide for Kids Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is ours.

Because of the McCarthy Ranch power outage on ourmeeting day in February, we suspended the Wing Nut for themonth, but the fight to help these kids is a never ending, everyday job.

I propose that we each bring an extra $5 donation for thebucket to the March meeting (March 15th) to supplement theshortfall in February.

So What Are Your Plans for 2014?

If you want to have some fun and get some good ridingexperience at the same time you’ve come to the right place– CA2S is where it is happing. We enjoyed a successfulEvent Planning meeting on Saturday, February 1. We saidgood bye to a great year and we are looking forward to anew year filled with lots of events to keep us busy. So,what are your plans for 2014?

We had a good turnout, plenty of food including the sugarrush donuts, and enough laughs to go around. Thanks toeveryone who provided input and volunteered to help Rickwith ride logistics as ride assistants – great participation. Ifyou didn’t make it you not only missed a fun time, but wemissed your input. We pretty well blew through 2014 withtons of stuff to do. This was an event planning meeting sowe plan much more than rides – we plan FUN for CA2S.

We will have dinner parities and/or BBQ’s, picnics, anotherHalloween party, PLP’s, a Progressive Dinner ride (alonger one this time, miles = smiles), our garage sale, andrides to other Chapter Rallies and/or meetings. Let’s get outand support some other Chapter’s this year by attending arally or at least a Chapter meeting. It’s a big state. I’ll tryto go if you’ll go – hit me up! We have day rides plannedand overnight rides planed. RTE (Ride to Eat) anyone? Ifyou haven’t seen California you will in 2014 with CA2S.Got any plans for 2014? Mark your calendars!

We had a good group show up at the Omega for our firstofficial CA2S ride of 2014 – Sutter’s Fort. We had lots offolks wearing Chapter vests and/or t-shirts. We actuallylooked like an official GWRRA group. We looked greatand will “suit up” on future rides. One down, so manymore to go!

We are looking forward to PLP after the meeting on 3/15.Workshops are not on the calendar, but certainly on themenu. Our Chapter commitment to PLP and workshops iswhat makes our Chapter one of the best in the District. Are

you tired yet – well, there is more to come.

The ever popular Rally in the Valley “Ridin’ on theRiver” is coming up on March 28 hosted by CA1R (SoCal – Santa Ana area). Rally in the Valley is always a goto destination for CA2S and this year is no exception. Itwill be in Laughlin NV at Harrah’s Laughlin. Danny hasa poll out. This is a great ride and good way to supportone of our Chapters. You can register on line at:www.rallyinthevalley.com.

On that note (OK, now for the soap box) – please help usout by responding to the yahoo polls. A good deal ofplanning and effort goes into making a ride or eventsomething you all will enjoy. We need your input!Besides, it is a good way to stay in touch with Chapteractivity even if you cannot make an event – we still loveto hear from you and want to keep you involved. Let usknow you are alive and kickin’ from time to time. If youhave a problem with the Yahoo functionality let the“Yahoo team” know and we will help you. Give Rick andhis ride assistant a hand so they can plan better for you.

Now, “Back to the Future.” We have some great eventscoming up and we always enjoy good weather to do them. After all, this is California – drought aside. We have gotour regular RTE rides each week, Streetmasters is comingup (highly recommended if you have never been), Solvangand many other events coming our way in 2014. So, whatare your plans for the year?

Our Chapter Rally – the ever popular CA2S Garage Saleis on the horizon scheduled for May 2nd and 3rd. It is NOTtoo soon to start gatherin’ your goodies to sell at the bigevent. We did very well last year, and as a result, we areable to give reimbursement to Chapter members going toclasses such as First Aid and CPR. Besides, the garagesale is a BLAST!! Oh, let’s not forget our shirts andvests. Let’s show folks who we are when we go on a rideor have an event!! We have good reason to be proud ofCA2S and GWRRA. So, what are you doing the rest ofthe year?

If you bought a Gold Wing to have fun and ride -- thenyou’ve come to the right Chapter. By now your calendarshould be full. Hey, I’m not getting any younger and Iwant to make the best of my times. There is no questionon what we plan for 2014 and we want as many of you tojoin us that can at each and every event. This is yourChapter and your opportunity to make the most of it.

Now let’s have some fun in 2014!

Patti’s Corner

Hi Everyone,

Wow… it is March, already… two months of the year have already gone by.

I am in the midst of tax season.. need your taxes done??

As I mentioned last month, the Region rally is Memorial Day weekend in St. George, UT. I have it on good authority that this will be thelast year at this location. So, for those of you who haven't been there, you better be making your plans and reservations to go.Reservations are pouring in, so get yours in, too.

After the Region Rally in St. George, the next big event is WingDing in Madison, WI in early July. As I hear the story, this will be the lastWingDing at that time of the year. Come out and see the fireworks with other GoldWingers…

And, the final big event for the year will be the California District Rally in Agoura Hills, CA. This will be a new location… I am certainlygrateful that we are not going back to Visalia.

So, get your calendar out and put the events on the calendar… What are your plans for 2014?

Dust off the bike, get in your car and come play with us…or tell me what you want to see us doing and what will get you to participate.

Patti.

CA2S Event Planning Meeting, Feb 1

Thanks to Roger and MK for hosting, andthanks to all who provided input and volunteered to help Rick with ride logistics – great participation.

We pretty well blew through 2014 with tons of stuff to do. This is an event planningmeeting so we plan much more than rides – we plan FUN for CA2S. We will havedinner parties, BBQ’s, picnics, another Halloween party, PLP’s, a Progressive Dinnerride (a longer one this time, miles = smiles), our garage sale, and rides to otherChapter Rallies. Get on board, we’re going for a RIDE(s)!!!

The CA2S calendar has been updated, so go there to get the dates and activities for your planning and calendars. Beprepared to do your part on these adventures because Rick and the ride crew may be calling on volunteers to helpwith logistics. Hey, it's all about TEAM, right!

THE INVISIBLE RIDER?"I never saw him. He came out of nowhere!" That's probably themost common statements heard at a collision between anautomobile and a motorcyclist. They're usually made by theoperator of the auto because the motorcyclist is unconscious (orworse).

As riders we wonder, "How can they NOT see us? Are they justnot looking?"

A lack of attention on the part of the driver does explain some ofthe car/bike collisions; the distracted driver, cell 'phones, unrulychildren, etc. All these can contribute BUT some responsibilitybelongs to the motorcyclist as well.

I know. I know. That's heresy. Let me explain.• Motorcycles make up about 3% of the "normal" traffic flow.• People "see" what they expect to see; things like cars and

trucks

Unless the rider does something to visually stand out, he can beeasily overlooked.• Motorcycles ARE much harder to see than cars/trucks because

of their smaller size. A motorcycle can easily be "lost" in thebackground even with the headlight on.

• Many motorcycles are colors that lend themselves to blendinginto the environment. Particularly dark colored machines(black is the color of pavement after all).

Many motorcyclists wear dark colored helmets (or no helmet atall, but we won't discuss those here) AND dark colored clothing.A number of studies in the US and abroad have shown that alight colored (white, silver, yellow) helmet is more noticeable(during daylight hours) than a dark colored (black, dark red, darkblue) helmet. Why? The driver sees this bright colored "orb"floating above the traffic (most riders heads are higher than thehoods/windshields of cars). It's DIFFERENT.

Lastly (and sadly), most motorcyclists are not skilled inemergency maneuvers. Over 13% of the motorcyclists involvedin fatal crashes made NO effort to avoid the collision. Theydidn't brake, they didn't swerve, they just rode right into thecollision. That's because, after they've gotten their license, they

Safety Corner,by

Rocky Fagundes

don't practice those kinds of maneuvers regularly (orever). Motorcycling is a SKILL. It takes practice.

So how can you NOT be the Invisible Motorcyclist?• Position your bike so it can be seen and identified in

the traffic stream.• Wear bright colors• Consider getting a brightly colored bike• PRACTICE your emergency maneuvers

Or you could take the advice I got once from a veryexperienced rider. He told me not to "ride like I wasinvisibile." He told me to ride like they can see meand are actively planning to do something to take meout."

Back In the Saddle Again. . . part two!

Close calls remind us of just how quickly our livescan change and, afterwards, we are left askingourselves, “What can we learn from this?” Whetherit is a car that unexpectedly turns in front of us orthe sudden discovery of a growth on our body thatwasn’t there yesterday, our lives can change in aninstant. Last month, California held its collectivebreath as we awaited the outcome of BarbaraJefferies surgery for breast cancer. According to herhusband, Tom, the doctors say that they caught itearly and her prognosis of a full recovery isexcellent. Breast cancer is a leading cause of deathamong women today. In 2014, the AmericanCancer Society predicts that 232,670 new cases ofbreast cancer in women will be diagnosed resultingin over 40,000 deaths. Even though breast cancer is100 times more prevalent in women than in men,men are certainly not immune from breast cancer;2014 estimates are that 2,360 men will bediagnosed with invasive forms of breast cancerresulting in 430 deaths. Thankfully, our prayers forBarbara and Tom appear to be answered, and, hopefully, they will be back in the saddle againshortly, but now for the learning moment: As weage, we tend to accept the changes in our bodies asa normal function of aging. Instead, we need tocritically look at any changes as potential warningsigns that need to be addressed early while they arestill close calls rather than tragedies.

District Director’s Message In keeping with the theme of “back in the saddle”,StreetMasters is holding their first class of the yearon Saturday, March 15th. Regardless of whether youhave been riding all winter or are just getting backon the bike after taking a few months off, refreshingyour low speed skills and improving your corneringskills is something that we all need to constantly beworking on and there is no better way to prepareforCA1-R’s Rally In the Valley event in Laughlin onMarch 28th–30th. As far as weekend over-nightersgo, you will be hard pressed to beat this one for funand value.

To complete the “back in the saddle” hat trick, I amso ready to get out of our four-wheeler and backonto two. My ankle surgery was successful and I amalmost strong enough to trust my ankle in case of aclose call. We thought we would be back on theWing for the Valentine Rally, but I just wasn’tconfident yet with a co-rider. It will be a few moreweeks yet, but with a little bit of luck, we will be inLaughlin on our Wing.

Until next month, ride well and ride often.

Vincent and Pamela PuterbaughCalifornia District Directors

Sutter Fort ride, Feb 22The day could not have been better for a ride up to the Capital and back home along the Delta.

We had a good group show up at the Omega for our first official CA2S ride of 2014. We headed up 680 and then overAltamont Pass. Doug graciously took the lead and did a fantastic job of navigating us safely to our destinations. I washis “gunner”. We had 6 bikes to start picking up a 7th with Gary and Lori joining us in Manteca. From there weheaded north on 99, but ran into some stop and go just south of Elk Grove. That was the worst part of the day – a littletraffic.

We got to Sutter’s Fort after a “short motor tour” of the area. After parking thebikes in front of the fort we were treated to those new fangled credit cardparking meters. We headed off to lunch at Susie’s Burgers, about ½ miles away– good leg stretch.

Susie’s is a converted 3 bay gas station made up like a 50’s diner. We sat outsidein the beautiful 70’s + weather and clear skies. The hamburgers were good oldfashion thick and juicy – the fries were fresh cut. Scrumptious!

We had lots of folks wearing Chapter vests and/or t-shirts. We actually looked like and official GWRRA group –thanks to everyone for suiting up!

After lunch we split into two groups. Doug, Charlie, Gary/Lori and I had to get back to the Valley. Rick, Buddy,Chin/Anita enjoyed a tour of Sutter’s fort before returning. Anita is quite the photo journalist!!

The four of us took the Delta route back. I love that ride down 160 every chance I get to take it. The weather wasperfect, the fields green, boats on the water, and plenty of bridges to cross. We had clear sailing the entire route.

If you missed the ride on Saturday, you missed a great opportunity to be out on your bike with good friends and enjoyour beautiful CA weather. We only have so many of these ride opportunities. One ride missed is one gone forever sotake advantage every chance you get to straddle that saddle. We look forward to seeing you join us next time.

Alas, 2013 is over. And a new COY will be announced shortly for 2014. This willlikely be our last article as COY, and we’ll be handing over this slot for the new2014 COY. Encore!!!! Sandy and I have enjoyed the distinction, recognition, andgenerous financial compensation. Adios amigo’s & amiga’s, we’ll see you downthe road.

But for now, you’ll have to indulge my ramblings one more time. I got sidetracked in Feb with a family member in thehospital, which kept me away from home. I managed to get one ride over/back on the Goldwing before the rain came. Onthat ride coming home westbound on I580, east of Livermore, I was reminded all the things we have to be vigilant aboutwhile riding. Rocky mentions the need to be visible, practice our skills, and be alert to other drivers, so I want to addanother. Watch out for the road conditions. Specifically the road surface. That stretch of I580 has quite some constructiongoing on, and I suspect they’ll repave the hiway as they’ve done eastbound already. Meanwhile, there’s tar snakes, laneshifts with grind grooves going every which way westbound. And a lot of potholes thrown in for character. So while you’reriding and doing all the other good stuff, you need to make good direction and lane choice decisions too. Usually I try tofind smoother pavement to avoid loose teeth, surprises, and flat tires. Most time a lane change will improve things.Sometimes changing track in the same lane. And lastly, make a game dodging the worst of it. Safely of course.

That’s all folks. Watch out for those road imperfections. Welcome our new COY!!!!Until next time, ride safe and often, danny

Dunneville Market, Feb 20 RTE

What a beautiful day for a ride down to south county. There was not a lot of sun, but the air was pleasant and fresh. It was a small group, but the important folks were there. Buddy met me at Four Points, and we headed south and met Pete as he was toolin' south on New Rdfrom San Martin.

The three of us headed up Roop Rd. to Gilroy Hot Springs Rd. The hills had more a hint of green and itwas a pleasure to see the color. We continued on to Canada Rd. There are some beautiful gated homesup in the south hills. As we curved down Canada we were treated to a beautiful clear view of thevalley. Pete remarked often about the great road conditions. It has its share of twists, turns, and hills, but great pavement. We turned east on 152 and made our way toward Hollister. We took San FelipeRd to the Dunneville Market at Shore Rd. The Dunnville has some of the best tri tip I have had. I'd sayit is better than Harris Ranch - I'm sure others would argue. They have a lunch special - a large tri tip sandwich on a sourdough roll for$6.99 - such a deal! The tri tip is so tender you don't even need teeth to eat it!

I have to give Kudos to Pete. After all my preachin' he was the only one to have on his teal CA2S t-shirt at lunch. Good for youPete! We will all do better to show our "colors".

After a good lunch and some laughs we headed out. Pete and I took Bolsa Hwy home, while Buddy headed off toward the Pinnacles. All and all a great day. Checking out the smiling mugs on the bikers

Ham Radio News for Madison, WI & Wing Ding 36

I have contacted the Ham Radio Clubs in Madison, Wisc. MARC The Madison Area Repeater Association, for our Radio Frequencies weshould use.

The club asked that if you are going to use a repeater us 147.150MHz +600 PL Tone 123.0 There is a 3 minute timer for the timeoutfunction.

This repeater has a height of 750 feet above the ground so it is a wide coverage repeater which will go to the state line to the south andplaces like Milwaukee, Wisc. It is hittable with an HT from the Convention Center. There is a net on Wednesday night at 8PM. Feel freeto check in at the appropriate time when they call for visitors. Make sure to mention you are with the GWRRA Motorcycle group. If youhave an HT you should program that frequency with PL Tone before you leave.

Also program 146.520, 146.550 and 146.580MHz simplex frequencies in there also. We will use these 3 frequencies inside theConvention Center rather than tie up the repeater. Start on 52 simplex and if it is busy move up to 55 then 58 if it is also busy.

There is also two Echo-Links in the area at 443.775 and 443.600 MHz which you can also use if you are interested in Echolink to talkback to home.

There is one D-Star Repeater on 145.305MHz -600 no PL Tone, which is W9HSY. We have permission to use that D-StarRepeater. Don't wear it out but you should be able to talk back home on D-Star.

There is APRS in Madison Area, I cannot find any repeaters in Madison, but within about 10 miles there is one, so listen on 144.390MHzsimplex for that APRS Signal. It seems they are all over the state so as you are travelling you should hit many digipeaters.

This information and permission was obtained from the MARA Club President N9VWH Paul Goussaing. We thank him for getting withthe club for the above permissions.

I am hoping to get a classroom and hold a Ham Radio Forum at Wing Ding 36 also. Please check the WD36 Seminar Schedule when itis published.
