WE HAD A

WINGIN’

GREAT TIME

First off – let me say thank you to Rocky and Rog who shared lead duties to Reno. Thank you Doug for guiding us the rest of the way to Billings Montana.Thank you Danny, for seeing us through the rain, wind, sleet, snow, and fog of Beartooth pass. A special note of appreciation and inspiration to Sandy who could have “weathered the storm(s)” in the cage with Patti, but hung in there on the back of their bike as the ever faithful co-rider. I want to point out a statistic that is eye opening and say congrats to CA2S and its faithful membership: We had a total of 14 attend Wing Ding 38. That is about 70% of our active members…….. OUTSTANDING !!! CA2S has come a long way and we are moving forward. Here is how Wing Ding read out to me: On Saturday the 27th, Patti and I met with Rocky and Roger at the Omega. We started our trip with 3 motorcycles and a cage. Rocky and Roger switched off duties as ride leader. I was on the new bike. Things were going great till I had a break down about 1 mile outside of Lockeford California. It was the kickstand signal. WHHAAAAAAAT? I don’t have a kick stand on the new trike……. Well, the trike thought I did and would not move without the kickstand up. We all tried to figure out the wiring for the kickstand, but without Doug, we were lost in the forest. The stars were aligned. I called Don Allen at Wing Nut and he said he’d be there shortly. It turns out he and Justin were on their way to Carson City for an event. Don came to the rescue with his red superman cape, Justin repaired the wire mishap, and we were off to Nevada. Our first stop was in Sparks Nevada where we checked in to the Super 8 motel. Rocky had a terribly smoky room and had a difficult evening at that particular hotel. You will have to ask Rock about his hotel misfortunes. The rest of the Blue Butt group joined us shortly for dinner. We had a great dinner at BJ's in Sparks. We only did about 280 miles for the day. On Sunday, Doug took over responsibilities as lead rider. We headed out from Sparks, kickstands up at 8:30. John Hein missed us but we picked him up at a rest stop several miles down the road thanks to Lori’s eagle eye. We spent the entire day riding through Nevada. We had 5 bikes and two cages and made it to Jackpot Nevada for the night. We stayed at Cactus Pete's Hotel and Resort. They have nice hotel rooms. We had a very good dinner at the buffet and a special treat for everyone. The Chapter picked up the tab for dinner. But more of a treat, Rock presented John Hein with his 50K miles pin – WAY TO GO JOHN!!! We spent a lot of time after the meal just sitting around and talking. This was the case the entire trip – a lot of great conversation. The total mileage for the day was about 400 miles. On Monday, we were kickstands up at 0800 with a gas stop to start. At the gas stop, we gave Rocky a birthday card from all of us and a special greeting from Pearl. It was a classic !!! I hope he reads it at the next meeting. Patti took the helm of the motorcycle from Jackpot crossing the state line into Idaho. I had the cage. We made our first stop at Twin Falls Idaho for some breakfast. We made our obligatory stop at Walmart so Gary could buy a new antenna for his cage CB. Speed limits in Idaho were posted 80 mph. We stopped in Burley, Idaho and had lunch at Denny's. This turned out to be one of the more fun times of the day with a lot of laughter and good conversation. We really enjoyed ourselves

and stayed way too long at Denny's. We continued on our way to Montana and enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the cornfields and farm lands of Idaho. We stopped for a photo opportunity at the Montana State Line and continued our trip on to Butte. The weather was hot and it was a long ride, but very enjoyable. The mountain scenery through Montana was spectacular. We had a great ride and a wonderful day. We pulled in to the Quality Inn in Butte Montana and they let us park our motorcycles on the walkway in front of the office – very cool. We enjoyed a fantastic dinner at Sparky's which is a well-known place in downtown Butte. We got to eat our meal at a table set up in the bed of a pickup truck (how cool is that) and that should give you some idea of the fun place Sparky’s was. We settled in for the night after a full day of motorcycle riding. We did about 420 miles that day. Tuesday August 30th, we awoke to find our motorcycles covered in a fine white ash from local fires. That was a surprise and something to witness. It made us wonder how much we had breathed in on the trip. We were kickstands up about 0800 with a gas stop to start. We continued on the roads through Montana where the speed limit was still posted 80 miles per hour. The Rocky Mountain scenery through Montana continued to be spectacular and we had some very beautiful motorcycle roads to travel through the mountains. We certainly had our share of curves and twists. We arrived in Billings Montana about 12:30 pm after a short day on the road. We did about 220 miles the last day. We all immediately went to the Metra Center to pick up our Wing Ding 38 registration packets and get set up for the week of Wing Ding fun. There were already many motorcycles and quite a few cages with people enjoying themselves checking things out with an early view of Wing Ding. After checking in and getting the lay of the land, we all went to check in at our respective hotels. Patti and I lucked out with a spectacular room after being upgraded to a suite at the Lexington. It was like a small apartment and beautifully maintained. It was one of the best hotel stays we've ever had. And yes, everyone got tired of hearing me go on about it. We met our CA2S group for dinner at the Outback in Billings. Every night we needed reservation for 10+/-. We mentioned to the manager at the Outback, it was Rocky's birthday and they gave us all free appetizers to celebrate. That was very kind and generous of the Outback. Folks in Billings were falling all over themselves to accommodate the Goldwing Riders. The welcoming was overwhelming by all of the businesses and folks that we met. We had a great dinner and a lot of laughs. Once again we stayed way too late at our table just having good conversation and fun. This is more than just a group – this is FAMILY. After dinner, we all headed to the welcome party in downtown Billings where they had more free food and some wonderful local ice cream available. There was Native American dancing and live music – WADDA PARTY. All we can see on people are smiles and bright eyes as everyone is having a great time. We got to our hotels late that night exhausted and had a fantastic first day in Billings. Opening ceremonies on Wednesday August 31st: So the fun begins and we enjoyed an impressive opening ceremony. There was a very inspirational talk from a couple that was rear-ended on a motorcycle by a drunk driver. He lost his leg and his wife was severely injured. What impressed him most and made him emotional was the family like focus of GWRRA people in Nevada who took them in and “adopted” them. The NV folks stayed with them and saw them through the entire ordeal. There's a reason we carry these Gold books, again – FAMILY! It was announced that Wing Ding 39 will be in Grapevine Texas just north of Fort Worth. After opening ceremonies, we couldn't wait to get into the vendor area. My first purchase was new Wind Wings for the 2012. I had a 1:00 PM appointment to have my motorcycle “tattoos” by Sue Hopper and she did a fantastic job on it. Shortly after that I had my wind wings and windshield engraved. There is just too much fun stuff to shop for and buy at wing ding. We did not win a 50/50 prize but the prize was worth about $2,500 (+/-) each day – it was amazing. We finished the day with our CA2S family enjoying another fun filled dinner at Famous Dave's Barbeque in Billings. We had a great meal and again much more fun. We hung out talking and enjoying more conversation outside for quite some time after we left the restaurant. We just can’t seem to let go …….. On Thursday we went directly to the Wing Ding Center and picked up our motorcycle. Patti did some riding in Montana on Thursday. Most of the day was spent shopping and going to classes each of us a different way. Donna said she had “HAPPY FEET” and brought the crew to the vendor that sold the in sole cushion – it became all the rage. Donna should have got commissions. The rest of the week, the gals were talking about their “happy feet”. We met up with the Cooks and Watts. We enjoyed a very informative motorist awareness program. I am proud to say we had 8 people from our chapter in the Motorist Awareness class. CA2S is making a very impressive showing at Wing Ding 38. People are taking notice of us. I want to emphasize (in case you missed it) that we had 14 people from CA2S at Wing Ding 38 and

Page 4: Chapter CA2S Silicon Valley Wingsgwrra-ca2s.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/CA2S-Sept-2016-Newsle… · We had a great dinner at BJ's in Sparks. We only did about 280 miles for the

CA2S Shark Bytes 4

that is approximately 70% of our normal meeting attendance – very impressive. I am so very proud of all y’all. After the motorist awareness class, we had the Wing Ding group dinner. Let me just say this it was not well organized and it was very very crowded. On their behalf, they did a good job of managing the buffet line given the huge crowd. The chicken was good and we enjoyed a good meal with friends. On Friday, we had to start out early at Wing Ding because we were assigned to work the GWRRA store. We had a 3 hour shift that turned out to be quite a bit of fun talking and joking with folks doing their shopping. We had a good contingent from our chapter who did their time working the store on Friday and a couple of days before. I want to thank everybody for contributing and sharing their time volunteering to work in the store. We spent the rest of the day just walking around the vendor area and doing more shopping. Patti and I headed back to the hotel and made a quick stop at Costco and purchased new Samsung S7 phones while there. Catch while catch can, besides we were in shopping mode due to Wing Ding “Vendormaina”. And no Montana sales taxes. We met the group for dinner at Johnny Carinos. Johnny’s is very nice Italian restaurant very close to our hotel. Once again, we enjoyed a lot of good conversation and hung around the restaurant for quite some time. However we spent even more time standing around outside the restaurant talking even more. We have a very fun and cohesive group. We said goodbye to Gary and Lori who were leaving that next day. We will miss them. Saturday September 3rd – Happy birthday to me!!! We started out the day at the Wing Ding Center walking around and making sure there was nothing we missed. We bought a few shirts and some other items. I enjoyed getting an awful lot of very happy birthday wishes. Thank you everyone. One display that Patti and I really got a lot out of was the semi-truck blind spot demonstration. A professional trucker took us through every spot on the large truck and showed us just how difficult it is for truckers to see motorcycles and cars. It was a very informative demonstration and we highly recommend it if you have the opportunity. It was amazing the things we learned around and inside of a semi cab. After that we made our way to the Billings hotel for the Masters lunch. We received excellent presentations from a MT Highway Patrol Captain, and then a Motorist Awareness Presentation from Barri Critzman. The day ended with closing ceremonies in the main Arena. Many awards were given and many Raffles were won, but we didn't take away any bucks this time. Total attendance for Wing Ding was low considering other events. There were just about 6,750 attendees. If we want to see Wing Ding in the West we need to show more support. They certainly got support from CA2S !!!!!!!!!! We went back to the Outback for a birthday dinner and had a wonderful time sharing more laughs and fun. I want to thank everybody for chipping in to purchase Patti and my dinner to celebrate our birthdays. It was heartwarming as was the beautiful cards you gave us thank you all so much – your generosity meant a lot to me. On Sunday, September 4 it was time for an early morning departure. This is not the weather we were hoping for – rain. It rained last night and was raining as we left. We headed out towards Red Lodge on our trip to Beartooth Pass. We were unsure if we'd be able to get over the pass as it depended on the roads. We stopped for gas at Red Lodge. We checked on the road conditions for Beartooth Pass and the roads were dry at present and the pass was open. YAHOO – we’re doin’ Beartooth Pass!!! So we took a chance and headed up the mountain. Beartooth Pass is a very twisty road with several hair pins. As we approached about 7000 feet we started to get raindrops on the windshields and the temperature was dropping rapidly. A short time later we were greeted with hail followed by sleet and then snow. Our speed limit through the area was between 15 and 25 miles an hour with extremely low visibility. The fog was heavy and the snow flurries were pretty thick. We spent a lot of time trying to keep our windshields and face mask clean from the snow that was building up. Yep, it was coooooold. We reached the summit at 10,947 feet for a break and photo op. It was downhill from there but the weather was still very bad. We took our time and finally came out of the clouds. We had some sunshine and some beautiful scenery for a few miles, but the clear skies didn't last long. We were back and pea soup fog in no time. We made our way to Cody where we stopped for a very late lunch. It was hot soup for me. All in all it was a fantastic road trip and great event. If you have not been to a Wing Ding event yet, you are missing out …….. next is in Grapevine TX, just north of Fort Worth. I’ll write more on the fabulous return trip for next month. Thanks again for all that shared ride leader duties and kept us safe through some perilous riding conditions.

Now – That’s the spirit of CA-2S !!

I’m sure by now reading this newsletter, you have read, or will read, several accounts of what Wing Ding was all about. It was my first Wing Ding so I had nothing to compare it to. So, I asked other members that went with me, and other GWRRA members at W/D what they thought.

The consensus was that even though it was lower on overall attendance, the same family for FUN was present. I enjoyed meeting Wingers from all over the U.S. and Canada throughout

the week in Billings. The town of Billings loved having us, and showed it by closing down main street for a street party country style complete with music, dancing, and free food!! Then there was the light parade with over 60 bikes participating and a grand parade with over 300 Goldwings rolling down the several long mile course. How’s that for having FUN? The Gold Angels Drill Team supplied entertainment for us with a couple of riding feats I had never seen before. Try riding having 2 motorcycles side by side of you facing one direction, and you are facing the opposite direction. Then you sit there while they each place a foot on your motorcycle and pull you backwards in a circle no less! Amazing stuff! There was every kind of vendor there you could think of for adding farkles, etc. to your bike. I added a Butler drinking mug, which I said I would never do. But on longer trips, it is great to have access to something to drink at your fingertips. I attended 4 or 5 Seminars to keep boned up on all the changes coming to GWRRA. And, it was great to stay inside for a bit to escape the 90 degrees outside besides. I learned a few things and got a few of my own questions answered as well. GWRRA certainly lives up to the knowledge part of education for the members. All good stuff for sure. Add to that the week long friendship and the celebration of another birthday for me, and you couldn’t ask for more good times. Pearl wrote me a special note on my Birthday card that I will share at the next chapter meeting. ☺ We saw some marvelous scenery on the way home through Beartooth Pass, Yellowstone, and The Grand Tetons! Another trip of a lifetime and a pocket full of memories that will always be better than dreams! Be sure to chat up any of the gang that attended Wing Ding to find out where it will be next year! Till next chapter meeting or ride,

Tires, Tires, Tires! Hello CA-2S fellow members! Just got back from the National celebration at Wing Ding. While I was there I had the chance to speak to several tire manufacturers about motorcycle tires. You might remember the incident that I had with my rear tire coming apart that I discussed as one of my safety chapter talks. Well, I recently had the same experience with the same make and model tire as before. Deep in the sipe pattern the tire was beginning to split apart only after 5,000 mile wear. It was the same beginning stages as my previous rear tire that literally did split open enough to see the nylon cords. After talking to the Metzeler rep., the Dunlop rep., and the Bridgestone rep. I learned something very interesting. All three of the manufacturers said that making a tire for the Goldwing was very difficult. In fact, Michelin has stopped making a tire for the Goldwing because of this. The weight of the bike. The amount of additional weight when traveling 2-up, Pulling a trailer, etc all put unusual heavy stress on the tires. Add the engine torque to the equation and you have a very difficult problem to solve. The Metzeler rep admitted, when I showed him the pictures, that the splitting was a common problem for the 880 model tire!!! That is why the 888 model was brought out to re-place it. Dah! So why are they still selling the tire that they know is failing? They needed to use up the existing stock!!! Meanwhile, I’m paying full retail for a tire that was proven to fail on the Goldwing. In Metzeler’s defense, they did refund 50% of the retail value of the tire that needed replacing. Bridgestone and Dunlop both have new model tires especially designed for the Goldwing. I recently purchased the Dunlop Elite 4 tires for Pearl. So far, I am very happy with the handling, performance, and quietness of the tires. They are very responsive. They are available in both the 1500 & 1800 Bias and Redial Ply. Why am I telling you all this? Well, through the conversations I had with all the reps. One single most important issue was mentioned over and over again. Tire pressure. Did you get that? Tire pressure. The daily checking if you are riding daily is important. I was told that only 1 or 2 lbs low could cause all different types of wear and damage to the tires. 1 or 2 lbs?? That seems really picky, doesn’t it? The design and engineering is so critical that there is no tolerance. Blow outs, tread damage, etc. can be caused by just running your tires low on air pressure. So for your safety and prolonged tire wear please check your tire pressures regularly and get down and closely inspect the tread for any damage or unusual wear. Your life may depend on it! I've said it before and I'm saying it again, last month was a busy month with something going on every weekend. Nothing but the facts, Jack! We started with the Progressive Dinner on August 6th. We changed it up a little and went to the Olive Garden in Tracy for dinner and then to Ralph & Robynn’s place in Manteca for delicious desserts. All that partook had a great time. The next weekend on August 13th a group of us went to CA2J’s gathering for another great time and some education on the GL1800 rear drive unit. As usual on the third Saturday of the month we had our own chapter gathering on the 20th. Of special note, Lori was the recipient of the coveted wing nut award for slapping the helmet of the driver of our trike (yep, me) when we performed a tight maneuver on the PLP trike course. For some reason she prefers all three wheels to be on the ground at all times. Go figure, right? Paul Androwsky made the nomination and paid the buck. He also received a little ire from Lori, but all in good fun. Anyways, thanks Paul.

The following Friday we took off for Reno for the Blue Butt ride held by the Blue Knights II on Saturday August 27th. This was my tenth (Lori’s eighth) consecutive time attending and for my “participation” efforts I got a nice mug with fancy engraving commemorating the ten years. Looks great mounted on the wall with the Blue Butt plaques that we get each year we attend. We weren’t the only ones to go from CA2S. Douglas Loyd and John Hein also attended the ride. We also rode with John’s son John Michael, Roger Walls and his wife CeeCee (for half of the ride) and Ron Taylor a former CA2S member now associated with GWRRA Chapter ID-T in Idaho.

This year’s route theme revolved around the “Bill of Rights”, and we also had to find the “Lost Knight” if so inclined. Promptly at 6:45 AM on the 27th, the route was handed out to all which would take us all on a 300-plus mile ride for the day. The first stop was on the way to Truckee, CA to a firing range where we exercised our 2nd Amendment rights and fired five 22-caliber rounds with a pistol of our choice at a plate/target to acquire raffle tickets for a drawing after the ride. We both hit the plate twice and got two raffle tickets. The second stop was at the Nevada County Courthouse in Truckee, CA and pertained to the 6th Amendment (speedy and public trial stuff). We had to find a sign and write down the number of the Nevada Co. ordinance for a parking ticket. Good thing the courthouse was closed or we all might have gotten parking tickets (maybe). Next, we rode to the St. Canice Catholic Church in Nevada City to find their kiosk to determine when their Saturday Vigil begins. If you didn’t know already this stop relates to the 1st Amendment and freedom of religion. From here we went to the Maranatha Fellowship Mennonite Church in Bangor, CA to find what time Sunday School begins. Again, the 1st Amendment which gives us freedom of assembly. Next stop, the California National Guard building in Oroville, CA to find who are the Commanding Officer and the First Sergeant of the 2668th Transportation Company. This if you are not familiar with pertains to the 3rd Amendment which prohibits the peacetime housing of soldiers in private homes. (Good thing, my house is too small as it is.)

CA2S Shark Bytes 12

We then went to the Portola Reporter, a local newspaper in Portola, CA to find the day’s headline, which just happened to be taped to the front door and read, “Blue Butt Riders Rock !! 2016”. The 1st Amendment also guarantees freedom of the press. The final stop before heading back to Reno was outside Vinton, CA to another firing range to acquire more raffle tickets. Shooting the pistols was a hoot! This time around Lori hit 4 of 5 and I hit 5 of 5. I didn’t get a marksman medal, but we did get raffle tickets. The ride was fun, but would have been more fun had we done it on our trike. If you haven’t read our COY article in this issue, you probably don’t know what I’m getting at.

Somewhere along the route we ran into Roger & CeeCee, who just happened to be the “Lost Knight” I mentioned earlier. This is the first time the Lost Knight was mobile. Usually, it is hidden and you follow clues to find it. Our own Douglas Loyd was the first to verbally (or physically) acknowledge Roger and therefore awarded the Lost Knight patch by Roger. The next day, Sunday, we met up with Sal, Patti, Rocky, Roger, John Hein and Douglas and headed off to Wing Ding 38 in Billings MT. I’m assuming (I know, that’s dangerous) that Sal did a big write up about Wing Ding in his article, so all I’m going to say is that it was a bunch of fun and I’m glad I went. We are looking forward to Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, TX. Don’t forget, CA District is coming up on September 23rd and our gathering is the week before on the 17th. Come to the gathering and say goodbye to Sal and Patti as they head off for a few months of fun and frolic in sunny Alabama. Until next month, be active, show chapter pride, and of course ride! Patti’s Corner

Our last meeting was on August 20. We were all excited for the workshop after the meeting to get ready for the trip to Wing Ding. Remember the California District Rally is just around the corner. I am sure they would love for you to show up if you didn’t register. We did the drawing for the Streetmasters workshop and the 2nd and 3rd place cash winnings at the Progressive Dinner…. That was a fun night… we ended up going to the Olive Garden for the salad and main course and ending the evening for dessert at Ralph and Robynn’s place. We surprised everyone and let CA2S pick up the tab for dinner. John Raser won the Streetmasters workshop and Roger won both the 2nd and 3rd place cash winnings Congratulations to the winners. John Raser has already signed up for a dirt bike version of Streetmasters near Yosemite in the next couple of weeks. I am sure that we will hear more about that from John in the weeks to come. There was a lot of talk about rallies we had attended (and the prizes we won) and the rallies to come. And, if you missed WingDing, you missed a lot of fun. See ya’ in Grapevine, TX for WingDing 39??? Come out and play with us this year... We want to see you.

When awareness counts….

By the time this goes out “today” would be a couple of weeks ago, but that is OK. The events of “today” could be any day for anyone. Today could have been a rather ugly day if not for seeing the unusual and realizing in short order that I needed to stop and quick without really seeing the reason “why”.

I was on my usual less traffic route riding home from work and about a mile away. I was going down one of those wide neighborhood streets with 35 limit and cars that tend to park at the curb. I ended up noticing a woman about 3 feet away from the curb (well away from the street) from over/through a parked car when she suddenly goes into all out panic and heads out towards the street I was heading down. I hit the brakes hard and then see about a two year old girl pop out from behind the front of a parked car and into the street. If I had not already been braking, she would have been hit. Her panicked mom did get ahold of her arm, but that also would have been too late as she was well out into the street by then.

I may not have seen the girl, but the items that I did see was enough to react to without actually seeing what was about to happen.

Enjoy,

Douglas

Summer seems to be winding down as September rolls in. There has been a feel of fall in the air so it’s time to brush up on our motorist tips for the fall weather coming. There are some things we can do ourselves as riders as well as tips we can pass on to motorists. Passing these on to other riders and our friends in cages could help save a life, maybe even yours.

For motorcyclists:

Never ride impaired or distracted. Obey traffic laws, wear DOT-compliant helmets and other protective gear. Make yourself visible by wearing bright colors and using reflective tape. Avoid riding in poor weather conditions. Use turn signals for every turn or lane change, even if you think no one will see it. Combine hand signals and turn signals to draw more attention to yourself. Position yourself in the lane where you will be most visible to other drivers.

For drivers:

Never drive distracted. Doing so can result in tragic consequences for motorcyclists. Allow a motorcyclist a full lane width. Although it may seem that there is enough room in the traffic

lane for a motor vehicle and a motorcycle, the motorcycle needs the room to maneuver safely. Do not share the lane.

Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic. This allows motorcyclists to anticipate traffic flow and find a safe lane position.

Because of its smaller size, a motorcyclist can be hidden in a vehicle's blind spot. Always check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections.

Turn signals on motorcycles are not the same as those on motor vehicles – motorcycle signals are usually not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Allow enough time to determine the motorcyclist's intention before you proceed.

Remember that road conditions that are minor annoyances to motorists can pose major hazards to motorcyclists. Motorcycle riders may change speed or adjust position within a lane suddenly in reaction to road and traffic conditions such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings, and grooved pavement.

Allow more following distance, three or four seconds, when following a motorcycle so the motorcycle rider has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. In dry conditions, motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars

These last two tips have some good stuff for motorcyclists too. We always need to our eyes open for road hazards and keep a safe following distance. Remember to stay safe out there and keep aware.

Last month I discussed the issues I had with our trike rear-end and some other items I needed to finish before heading off to Wing Ding in Billings, MT. Unfortunately for me, these issues ran deep into August and ate up a lot of precious time.

About mid August I finally got the rear-end housing and differential (installed in housing) back from my differential guy; from here on noted as DG. The bad news is that I didn’t get the axles with it. However, at this point I didn’t need the axles right away because most of my work

involved modifying the swingarm and adding permanent brackets to the housing. I did manage to make up the jig to hold both the rear-end and the swingarm in place while I cut and welded on them. Once I had the jig brackets welded in place I put in the new rear-end housing, bolted up the swingarm and determined what I needed to do to the swingarm. It’s amazing what one can do with a 4-1/2” grinder fitted with a 1/16” thick cutting disc. It must have sounded like a full-fledged fabrication shop with all the grinding, banging and swearing going on. I had three grinders; the one with the cutting disc, another with a grinding wheel and one I kept switching between a wire wheel and a sanding disc. I could have really used a fourth grinder (and also a couple more able hands). I finally picked up the axles on Wednesday 8/24 just two days before we were to leave for the Blue Butt ride in Reno and then from there off to Billings. This was the second time I went after the axles. The first time was on Friday 8/19. I took along the new housing just to make sure that everything would be copacetic. Good thing I did because the machinist made the splined ends too small in diameter and they just spun around where they’re supposed to fit snugly in the differential. Panic, Panic! Did I mention earlier that there was a bit of swearing? Actually, it came from the DG, not me (this time). The machinists on the east coast that made the axles were gone for the weekend and wouldn’t be back until Monday. More Panic!! The DG got a hold of the main office back east and they assured him that new axles would be delivered on Wednesday, and surprisingly they were. Funny (not really) how the axle guys managed to make and ship the axles in one day and it took over ten (that’s right, ten) weeks to get them to me the first time. So eleven weeks later I now have a new rear-end with axles and a modified swingarm, but still need to put the finishing touches to disc brake brackets before installing it all in the trike. I had brackets made a day before but couldn’t do anything with them until I got the axles so I could mount the rotors and figure out where to drill the holes in the brackets. It was now 10:00 PM on Thursday 8/25 and it looked like an all-nighter would get me on the road Friday and off on the first leg of our trip to Reno. I was pumped up and ready to do it. At about 11:20 PM I hit a snag. I had the rotor and lower portion of the caliper installed and tried to swing the upper portion of the brake caliper into place, but it just wouldn’t go down far enough to slide the pin in. It was then that I realized that the brackets didn’t quite match the template I made and wouldn’t work without a lot of grinding (and noise). Seeing how I have neighbors and I would have had to do a lot of grinding outside, the realization hit me that all my work and efforts were about to come to a screeching halt. This meant, of course, that the trike was not going to Reno or to Billings.

I guess this was all for the best. When I started this project back in June, I figured I had plenty of time to complete it and also drive the trike around to get rid of any bugs in the new systems. Nope, it just wasn’t meant to be. After getting back from Billings I’ve sort of backed off the trike modifications in order to get my neglected chores done. But, my next goal is to get the trike on all three wheels and ride it to the District Convention in Bakersfield later this month. Who knows, maybe it will happen. On our recent ride, there was some discussion on Aspen versus

Birch. Thought you might enjoy a few factoids on the two different

geneses. Aspen (Populus tremuloides) is noted for its ability to

regenerate vegetatively by shoots and suckers arising along its long

lateral roots. Root sprouting results in many genetically identical

trees, in aggregate called a "clone". All the trees in a clone have

identical characteristics and share a root structure. The members

of a clone can be distinguished from those of a neighboring clone

often by a variety of traits such as leaf shape and size, bark character, branching habit,

resistance to disease and air pollution, sex, time of flushing, and autumn leaf color. A clone may

turn color earlier or later in the fall or exhibit a different fall color variation than its

neighboring aspen clones, thus providing a means to tell them apart. Aspen clones can be less

than an acre and up to 100 acres in size. There can be one clone in an aspen grove or there can

be many. The largest and oldest known aspen clone is the "Pando" clone on the Fishlake National

Forest in southern Utah. It is over 100 acres in size and weighs more than 14 million pounds.

That is more than 40 times the weight of the largest animal, a blue whale. It has been aged at

80,000 years, although 5-10,000 year-old clones are more common. Hey! That’s older than me!!

Birch (Betula pendula) tend to have short lives. While some varieties are hardier than others,

most birch trees have an average life expectancy of only 10 to 15 years. Birch trees are well-

known for their attractive bark. Many have white or silvery-gray bark that peels off the tree in

attractive rolls. Others have smooth, cream-colored bark that never peels. Regardless of the

species of birch tree, the bark is quite distinctive and unusual.

The leaves of birch trees are small, graceful and delicate. In a breeze, they will rustle together

pleasingly. Some varieties have almost lacy leaves, while other birch trees have small, teardrop-

shaped leaves. No matter the shape, the leaves of all birch trees will turn a golden yellow color

in the fall.
