6. Course Aims and Content by Level: what is this course all about and how does the programme of study build and develop over time?

The BA (Hons.) Media Production with Foundation Year degree is an exciting overview of the Radio industry as we see it both now and in the future. We are

CA3 Course Specification Template – October 2019 Page 2 of 27

extremely proud to launch this degree at UWL. It encompasses modules spanning production, presentation, writing, formats, Business Management, Events, Sound Design, Video Production, Advertising and Branding alongside more theoretical and historic approach, ensuring its contemporary content is reflective of academic practice. With reference to the 2012 Creative Skillset Employment Census of the Creative Media Industries, it is notable within the field of Radio that skillsets and demand are variable particularly in the realm of Production roles. It is with this in mind, we have placed a weighting on a more varied skillset, focusing on Management, Business Management, Journalism, Interactive Media and Post Production in order to ensure more students are industry ready upon completion of this degree. Business Management and Editorial/Journalism are identified as the largest occupational groups within the growth areas. Interactive Media in particular has risen +33% since the 2009 survey with Post Production showing a rise of +19%, so these subject areas are paramount.

Stats from Skillset’s report also show that both Radio and Interactive Media recruit and operate from a dominant market share within London and neighbouring counties, (45% and 23% respectively) thus giving UWL students and staff the edge due to close proximity to companies and facilities. It would also be wise to build further links with practitioners and businesses in East London as they are now shown to represent an equivalent workforce as their West London counterparts. Forging industry links is very much embedded within the aims of the course, which can be read in detail.

This course provides students with the institutional knowledge and technical skills that are necessary for a successful career in the radio and broadcasting industries. It also requires them to engage with theories of mass communications and debates relating to these industries. We envisage that graduates will recognise the importance of media practice informed by theoretical ideas relating to communication and cultural studies, and will have a mature understanding of the pragmatic relationship between creativity and industry. Graduates will be business literate, and able to generate ideas and income from their skills.

The course also aims to engage students in the creative use of contemporary media platforms, with an appreciation of technology and its impact on content production. Students will develop knowledge, understanding, conceptual and technical skills relevant to the production of audio for radio and the wider broadcast and entertainment industries.

Outcomes

The BA(Hons) Media Production degree aims to develop within the student:

A good knowledge of relevant technical skills (principles of audio recording and editing, self op studio management and mic techniques).

The ability to cast voices, write a budget, production-manage and oversee delivery of audio in all forms, from initial brief to finished files.

7. Course Contact Hours: how much time should I commit to this course?

Learning hours are determined by credits. One credit is worth 10 learning hours, so a 20 credit module is 200 learning hours, a 30 credit module is 300 hours etc. This is the amount of time you should be prepared to commit to each module.

Learning hours are divided into: taught or ‘contact’ hours, i.e., the amount of time students spend in contact with academic staff, whether through face-to-face classes or online learning; and independent study, i.e., the amount of time students are expected to spend on their own study and assessment preparation. Students also have one-to-one time with academic staff in personal tutorials.

8. Academic Staff:

Staff employed on UWL Academic contracts at Lecturer level have a minimum requirement to have a higher degree in an appropriate discipline and a teaching qualification (PG Cert or Academic Professional Apprenticeship) and/or HEA Fellowship. Senior Lecturers have a similar minimum level and in addition should either hold a PhD or be registered on a doctorate programme. Associate Professor and Professor levels are required to have a PhD. All staff on Academic contracts at UWL are required to undertake teaching. Hourly paid teaching staff are also used across UWL and these colleagues bring a wide range of professional, specialist and industry experience to the teaching of our students. The University has made an explicit commitment to supporting the professional development of its staff through the programme of continuing professional development (CPD) managed and

10. Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategies: how will I learn, how will my learning be assessed, and why are these the most appropriate methods?

Studio-based and practical activities are a significant feature of broadcast and sonic education, providing logic for both individual and group tuition. Effective learning environments are engendered in studios, workshops, production units and computing units, with staff and students sharing experiences as partners in the process of learning. Distinctive features of the subject include, for example, the use of projects as a vehicle for learning, and the group critique, where students present and discuss their work with their peers and tutors. These, together with the individual tutorials, promote reflective learning and the development of generic skills. Other teaching and learning methodologies include team-teaching, demonstrations, seminars and lectures, and peer learning. Live projects, competitions, work-related learning and student exchanges also provide vehicles for teaching and learning. Utilizing the cutting edge radio studio facility will enhance immensely the learning experience for students, giving them an industry parallel to learn in, ensuring they are industry ready in every facet of the radio and production strands within this

degree.

The development of students' independent learning skills is promoted through self-directed and self- initiated study, which may be formalized through individually negotiated learning agreements. Such personal and professional development is typically expressed in a range of forms including production diaries and personal development records, planning documentation and pitches and presentations, which inform the learning process throughout.

Students are likely to come from a variety of academic and practical backgrounds and have varying learning styles. It is always the intention to ensure that all learning needs are met and suitably supported.

Students will engage in learning through a variety of resources in person and online:

Lectures

Workshops

Practical demonstration

Guest sessions and industry events

BlackboardLecture capture

Relevant online professional resources

UWL Library services archive

Students will be encouraged to discover their own learning preferences and to develop strategies to improve their abilities to learn from other methods.

Students with diverse academic backgrounds and experiences there will be support for them through the Study Skills Support team to further develop their abilities.

Reflective practice will be enabled through the use of workbooks, project evaluation and personal development plans

The fundamental theories and concepts will be delivered by tutors, thus enabling students to investigate further in group work, seminars and projects.

Students will be encouraged to extend their knowledge beyond the classroom through reading and production activities relevant to the subject.

Feedback to students will be made both on a formal basis on assignments and in classroom contact which will encourage the development of skills on a regular basis.

Page 17: CA3: Course Specification Any · 2020. 7. 31. · CA3 Course Specification Template – October 2019 Page 1 of 27 CA3: Course Specification Along with the Module Specifications, the

Team working will be encouraged both informally in the classroom exercises and in formal group presentations.

Time management will be integral in the assessment with fixed deadlines to work to, which will reflect the workplace.

The students will have the opportunity to discuss subject queries with their personal tutors.

The students will be developing skills using Industry standard IT packages and by the use of standard practice methodology.

Students will carry out student-led practice beyond taught ‘classroom’ sessions through supported open-access arrangements to all practice studios/workshops.

Technology Enhanced Learning:

Levels 4,5 & 6 The course subscribes to the University’s TEL strategy, which forms part of

the more general IT strategy for the University, available at: https://www.uwl.ac.uk/sites/default/files/Departments/About-

us/Web/PDF/policies/IT_strategy.pdf The latter is designed to implement various modes of integration and

consolidation. The course deploys all of the resources of the VLE used by the University

(Blackboard), and operates in conjunction with the Reading Lists which interface with the Library. The resources of lecture capture technology (UWL Replay) are used on several modules. Modules with an audio-visual focus use Box of Broadcasts for off-air recordings of relevant television programmes, films screened on television as well as radio programmes linked to the syllabus.

Almost all modules with a theoretical emphasis will use Powerpoint or another comparable presentational aid. All modules are underpinned by their representation on Blackboard, with content for lectures, seminars and workshops placed on the VLE as appropriate for the learning event in question.

On-line assessment submission and feedback are used for all appropriate modules. This is in line with the University’s IT and TEL strategies.

Assessment strategies:

Learning strands throughout the course progress from primarily skills attainment and cognitive learning at level 4 (see Course Learning Outcomes – particularly A4.1-4 and C4.1-4), to more focused subject level and conceptual development at level 5 (Course Learning Outcomes – particularly B5.1-3), to then a more individual

CA3 Course Specification Template – October 2019 Page 17 of 27

Page 18: CA3: Course Specification Any · 2020. 7. 31. · CA3 Course Specification Template – October 2019 Page 1 of 27 CA3: Course Specification Along with the Module Specifications, the

personal development emphasis at level 6 (Course Learning Outcomes – particularly B6.1-3, C6.1-.5 and D6.1-6). Formative, summative and diagnostic assessment are regarded as positive learning tools and feedback from assessment offers students clear guidance with regard to future development. Assessment strategies support students' understanding of their learning processes and are designed to foster a deep approach to learning. Strategies also promote autonomous learning and self-evaluation as vital elements within the overall learning process. Self- and peer-evaluation constitute an important part of formative assessment and, on occasion, of the formal summative assessment process. Assessment criteria accommodate the speculative enquiry common to most disciplines in art and design, and provide fair and accurate assessment of teamwork and individual contributions to the overall outcome of collaborative projects. Feedback on assessed work is an important feature of students' learning. Art and design has a strong tradition of providing students with comprehensive oral feedback through tutorials and critiques, but written feedback (or audio recorded feedback) has increasingly supplemented this predominantly oral tradition, reflecting the art and design community's awareness of good practice in teaching, learning and assessment. Support systems at institutional and discipline levels identify student needs and provide relevant help and advice for both academic and pastoral matters. Research indicates that dyslexia is more prevalent amongst students of art and design than in other subjects, and UWL has well-established support systems for this need. The main form of module assessment will be the production of a portfolio of evidence. This may include a range of information such as research materials, evidence of self-reflection and evaluation, as well as the production of artefacts. Some modules will also require the production of essays relating to research and analysis concerned with the theoretical discourses and debates surrounding art, design and multiplatform radio & audio production practice. The timing of the assignments has been planned to ensure that the students are not overworked at any stage. Many of the technical subjects will have a final assessment. These will be a mixture of either essay and / or artefact production supported by research and production diaries to ensure that the work is a true reflection of the student’s knowledge understanding and skill developments in meeting the module’s learning outcomes. Documentation appropriate to professional workplace demands will also be integral, including commissioning documents and broadcast documentation in accordance with BBC and Commercial practice. Formative assessment is also used throughout all modules in the individual and group tutorial system to support and direct students prior to the formal summative assessment. 11.
