The Theatre Program at Grand Valley recognizes that the casting in
this play that is outside of the recognized ethnic character types may
be perceived by some as insensitive or even racist. This was not our
intent. We acknowledge that antisemitism is a particular prejudice
that has been perpetuated against the Jewish people for centuries and
culminated in the 20th century with the rise of Nazism by white
Germans, who proceeded to wage a world war and to implement a
mass genocide against the Jewish people. Ultimately, over six million
Jews were murdered by the Nazi machine. Between the Nazi
takeover in 1933 and the end of the war in 1945, 2 out of every 3
Jews in Europe had been murdered. Nearly 100,000 gay men were
arrested during that time period, and 15,000 were sent to
concentration camps. It is estimated that over half died during their
imprisonment. And while we acknowledge that there were many
good people who resisted the genocide, often risking their own lives
to help those trying to hide or escape, the vast majority of white
German citizens stood by while Hitler’s regime executed its Final
Solution.

Director’s Note
It could never happen today. It could never happen here. It is easy to think that,
isn’t it? That is what many residents of Europe in the 1930’s thought. It is certainly
what the characters in Cabaret believe. Sally Bowles dismisses politics as
irrelevant. Schultz believes the Nazi’s are just another temporary political party of
no consequence. Schneider and Cliff see the danger, but run away from the fight.
None of them knew just how bad it would get. How do you imagine the
unimaginable?
Even for us today, with the benefit of hindsight, the horrors of the Holocaust are so
atrocious that is difficult to grasp its reality. But it was real. It happened. And
happened because not enough people had the courage to stand up.
So could it happen today? Could it happen here? Of course. Human history is
littered with genocide. As you read this, there is an attempted genocide going on in
the southeast Asian nation of Myanmar under the rule of a woman who was once
awarded the Noble Prize for Peace. So it can happen anywhere.
But I don’t think it will happen here. For the last several decades in the United
States there has been a healthy resistance to those who would follow the path of the
Nazis and their kind. I am optimistic that our society will continue to stamp out
racism and oppression when it rises up. I think most of us have learned from the
historical mistakes of our country and are better for it now.
This relative peace we enjoy, however, cannot be taken for granted. When
neo-Nazis walk the streets of Virginia with torches chanting, “Jews will not replace
us,” we must speak out. And when our political leaders fail to denounce this
behavior, we must speak out. When a President makes a proclamation that the
military must begin discriminating against the LGBT community, we must speak
out.
Like Weimar Germany and its Kit Kat Klubs, America 2017 is a place that allows
for many freedoms and privileges. Enjoy it! “What good is sitting alone in your
room? Come let the music play!” sings Sally. “In here everything is beautiful,”
insists the Emcee. Just don’t forget that outside lurks that which will not only end
the good times, but, if permitted, will do far worse.
Imagine the unimaginable. Don’t let it happen again.
