In some cases a child enjoys a rare gift for music or sport that propels him or her into a career while at other times it is something completely different. As an educator the fact that many very successful people have not always found their school years rewarding is a constant reminder that each of us have our own unique gifts and that they emerge at different times in our lives. Recently I had the privilege of meeting someone whose experience embodies this truth. During the enrolment interview with her daughter I was explaining that a learning difficulty did not have to limit her potential as a person etc… Midway through the conversation this mum said, “That sounds like me.” It turns out that mum had left school early after experiencing many challenges. Since then she has built two successful businesses and is currently studying for a university degree that she would never have considered possible as a school student. Talk about life-long learning! It is often said that parents are the primary or first educators of their children. This mother’s story reminds us of the truth of this statement for all of us. Receiving our child’s report at the end of term is one of those moments when we get to teach as parents. We do so from our own experiences of having received feedback both positive and negative throughout our lives. Thus we know just how important it is to choose our words carefully. With this in mind it is worth noting that academic reports provide students with a snapshot of their performance at a particular point in time. As such they affirm the efforts the child has made in the previous term or semester and offer some possibilities for development in the second half of the year. However the conversation goes, encouraging your son or daughter to reflect on his or her report and discuss some realistic goals for improvement is invaluable. New Semester

As we draw the end of term to a close, we also look to new beginnings. Schools provide a unique opportunity to start again at the beginning of each semester. The reports that you will receive assess your child against

curriculum standards. Teachers also reflect on a range of assessments to inform, monitor and scaffold teaching and learning. The process of learning how to learn, is an important goal in our educational setting. We provide opportunities for students to set goals, self-reflect and seek new challenges.

Assessment FoR learning:Focuses on the gap between where a learner is and where they need to be so that they can meet their desired goal.

Assessment AS learning:Focuses on teachers and students identifying and reflecting on the evidence of their learning. This can help to set new learning goals and the skill of peer and self assessment.

Assessment oF learning:Focuses on teachers moderating and using evidence against curriculum standards.

working Together

Please use this opportunity to open new learning conversations with your child as they review their Semester 1 progress. Use this as a time to set new goals, identify skills that are assisting their learning and challenges the student can work on to overcome. Together we can work to provide high challenges and high levels of support to promote further success for Semester 2.

Grandparents Day

It was wonderful to see so many visitors at our recent Grandparents and Special Friends day. The Year 6’s enjoy hosting the day, to pay tribute to the many special people in their lives. It was a wonderful showcase of their skills as we were entertained by various musical ensembles on the day. Their biographies were presented to their visitors and many were amazed at the rich details, excellent literacy recount and technical skills that were used to prepare these. Congratulations to Sarah Russell and the Year 6 team for their planning of this event and thank you to all parents and staff who willingly assisted. As we often say, “it takes a village to raise a child.”

Mid Year Holidays

We hope that the holidays provide a time of rest and relaxation for the students as they prepare to face the new challenges of Semester 2. We thank them for the enthusiasm, commitment and joy that they share with us each day as we journey together.

Ms Griffiths and Mr von der Borch took their Year 8 English students to the “Meet the Writers Festival” on Wednesday June 13th at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

They had the privilege of meeting some of Australia’s best adolescent-fiction writers. It was a great day as is evident from some of these student responses:

I saw Jackie French and she was loud, which caught my attention… I was

inspired to be creative because of some of the writers’ stories. Leila Scott

I learned heaps from all the authors and loved hearing their stories, especially those

from Michael Pryor. Stephanie Antolis

Michael Gerard Bauer was hilarious! He told us how he was a champion fainter. I

Year 10 Life education Presentation

Last week the Year 10 students attended a Drug Education presentation from the Life Education Organisation. The information session provided the students with a broad range of evidenced based data

associated with the short term and long term impact which harmful drugs can have on an individual’s body. The presentation was extremely engaging and informative for the students.

VeT Awards

Congratulations to Brayden Hill and Jana Tsesmelis for being formally acknowledged at a recent presentation for students who have undertaken VET courses as part of their Senior School studies. The INAP Graduation Ceremony was held at Our Lady of the Scared Heart College last week. I would also like to take this opportunity to formally acknowledge all of the work of Mrs. Sharkey who is our VET Coordinator here at the College. Mrs. Sharkey devotes a significant amount of time

customising career pathways in consultation with individual students which align with their personal skills sets and interests. By enrolling in a VET course students are provided with the opportunity to engage in ‘real world’ learning activities. The courses also provide the students with the chance to mix with students from a broad range of other Schools and Colleges.

2013 Subject Information Sessions

This Thursday we will be having the first of our SACE information sessions for the current Year 10 and Year 11 students in preparation for the 2013 SACE Orientation Evening for parents which will be held on Wednesday the 1st of August commencing at 7.30pm in St. Dominic’s Hall.

Road Accident Awareness Presentation

Last week we had the RAP Presentation (Road Accident Awareness) for the Year 11 students. This is an integral program which we have embedded into the Year 11 Pastoral Care Program each year. The students were very attentive for the ninety minute session. The presenter Mark Haylock was really impressed with the students’ response to the presentation which includes aspects that are very confronting.

Generation Next Conference

Each year we provide opportunities for our staff to attend the ‘Generation Next’ Conference which deals with a broad range of issues associated with student wellbeing.Last week we had one of our College Counsellors and two of our Senior School Year Level Coordinators attend the Conference. The information gathered from these types of Conferences are then fed back to our Pastoral Care Teams and incorporated into our Pastoral Care Program.

Year 11 Coordinators – Semester 2

I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank Dr. van Eyk for all of his work in relation to supporting the Year 11 students in Semester 1. Dr. van Eyk will be on long service leave for the remainder of the year. We all wish Bernie a safe and relaxing break over the coming months. In response to an absence being created in this role we have appointed Mrs. Chris de Silva and Ms. Erin Mann to the position for Semester 2. Both Mrs. de Silva and Ms. Mann will share the role for the remainder of the year.I look forward to working with both Chris and Erin over the coming months.

written by: michelle robertsLast week Michelle Roberts (Student Counsellor), Richard Bolt and Edmund O’Brien (Year Level Coordinators 12 & 10) attended ‘The Mental Health & Wellbeing of Young People’ Adelaide conference 2012.This annual conference is an opportunity for Teachers, Health Care workers and Doctors to hear reports on the latest research and trends in a broad range of topics affecting the young people with whom they work. Presenters and topics included Dr Ramesh Manocha who has conducted studies of the benefits of meditation (mental silence) in the classroom, Prof Michael Nagel ‘Re-understanding the Developing Brain’, Paul Dillon ‘Drug & Alcohol Update 2012, Sergeant Stuart Butler ‘Online Predators – What You Need to Know’, Melinda Tankard Reist ‘Porn & its Impact on Young People’, Prof Felice Jacka ‘Junk Food & Mental Health’, Dr Sarah Blunden ‘Children, Sleeps & Screen’, and Dr Wayne Warburton ‘Violent Video Games & Violent Behaviour’. Each present nationally and in some cases are World experts in their field. The insights offered will be of daily use to many of those who attended – including the delegates from Cabra. An example of this is Paul Dillon’s research on Alcohol & Drugs is being used in the Year 10 Drug Education Seminars this term, along with Sergeant Stuart Butler’s recommendation that schools continue to run Parent Information Evenings on Cyber Safety and that parents be reminded that students should never have computers or mobile

phones with internet access unsupervised in their rooms. Many of the old adages, such as ‘you are what you eat’, as well as ‘watching too much TV (or any other screen) gives you square eyes’ and ‘playing violent video games makes you more likely to act violently’ all rang true. Worryingly, it has been shown that eating too much processed food leads to depression and anxiety in young people. To counter this people are encouraged to enjoy processed foods in moderation and return to ‘2 fruit and 5 veg’. Too much screen time can also make people more anxious and experience low quality sleep. Research has shown that an adolescent or pubescent child, who has less than 8 hours sleep for 14 consecutive days, will be as adversely affected as if they had not slept for 48 hours. Kids need sleep to function effectively at school. In recent times violent video games have become shockingly more violent, and ratings such as MA15+ are clearly not enforced. The expression ‘the jury is out’ in relation to violent video games making people more violent was shown to be untrue. Of the more than 400 studies conducted all have to some degree shown that playing violent video games does affect young people in that they are more likely to act aggressively for up to 15 minutes after playing than those who play non-violent games.

While all of these topics can seem overwhelming in terms of their effects on young people, delegates were also brought up to date with new initiatives from organisations such as Headspace, MindMatters, and professional associations like ACER. Many of the insights gained will have positive impacts on our Pastoral Care program and policies. They will also be of use on a daily basis as we continue to work with and support our young people.

Year 10 Science

written by: mrs sharkey, Year 10 Science TeacherAs a part of the topic on Species Survival, the year 10’s were carrying out a Natural Selection simulation looking at the survival of Woolyboogers with different mouth parts for feeding. (source: http://www.biologycorner.com/worksheets/naturalselection.html).

Working in groups of 5, each student was given a piece of equipment to represent their Woolyboogers mouth part – these were a plastic knife, fork, spoon, clothes peg or tweezers.

In each trial they had to attempt to pick up, one by one, at least 20 lima beans in order to survive to the next round. If 20 beans were not collected the woolybooger died, students were then given a new mouth part to use in the next trial. We completed trials of 60, 45, 30 and 15 seconds. Surprisingly 2 students using plastic knives survived along with those who had either tweezers or plastic spoons. Student then went onto to complete an iteractive about rabbit survival, using their laptops:http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/natural-selection

Stage 2 Biology

As a part of the Cells section of the course students dissected a chicken wing to look at the muscles, bones, joints , tendons and ligaments. As well as seeing bones that were able to be bent. They had been soaked in acid overnight

to remove the calcium that contributes to the hardness of the bone. You can try this at home using chicken bones and vinegar:http://www.sciencebob.com/experiments/rubberbone.php

Life education: Drug Education Session

written By: Jane DeekOn Wednesday afternoon all year 10 students were fortunate enough to partake in a drug awareness/information session. It presented valuable information which made us all more aware of the effects of drugs, both legal and illegal. Furthermore, it addressed the topic of underage drinking and the problems associated with the usage of these substances. This session was extremely useful to our age group as some students might sometimes consider experimenting with alcohol and drugs at this age. This session highlighted the effects of drugs and other substances and the harm they cause to our bodies, especially at such a young age. This life education class was different from the others that we have been to as this time we were able to interact and answer questions that were put to us in order to test our understanding of short and long term effect on the well being of drug users. I believe that there was a lot of constructive information that students gained out of this Drug Education Session. Also, it equipped us with valuable evidence based data in order to assist us in making right and wrong moral choices. Overall, it was a challenging session which clearly took the myth out of our temptation for short term pleasures compared to long term irreparable damages. I believe every student should attend one of these sessions at least once in their schooling life.

kYoTo BUNkYo JAPANeSe STUDeNTS

written by: grant thompsonThere is much enjoyment to be had in participating in programs overseas. For the Kyoto Bunkyo Japanese students here at Cabra College, many of them have been joining in various fun extra-curricular activities.

The girl in the photo facing towards this way,Aya Ito, had just finished singing in a school musical performance in St Brigids Square. On the same day, Kaede Kito played guitar, Yako

Kano played trumpet, Sakura Sakane played clarinet and Kana Nakai played trombone. They are all involved with musical activities here at Cabra.

As for sporting activities, Yako Kano and Kana Nakai play in the school’s 8 – 10 Girls Soccer Team and Hiroki Saito plays basketball for the school and participated in the Athletics Carnival at Hindmarsh Stadium.Seize the day!

Debating Report

written by: mrs J CrossCabra’s two debating teams continue to do well. The Yr 6 Junior team narrowly won their debate against Scotch College last week when they convinced the adjudicator that “Sportswomen do not face more hurdles than sportsmen” and

the Intermediate team only just missed out on a win against Scotch on the topic of “That we should abolish trial by jury”.Both teams are working hard to prepare for the next Round, with some interesting topics coming up: (Juniors) “That parents are to blame for childhood obesity” and (Intermediate) “That Australia should become a republic”.

Middle School Library News

written by: ms sb and mrs millsThe Middle School Library hosted its first Scholastic Book Fair last week which was a resounding success. We were inundated with eager readers and through the sales were able to receive around $300 worth of books as a reward for our library. Most of the books for the library were chosen by students. Thank you to our student volunteers Henry and Sam who worked tirelessly that day. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. It was fantastic to meet our year 6’s grandparents and special friends. Thank you for bringing them over to your favourite place in the school. In the lead up to this special day we asked the students to write a poem about their grandparent or special friend and were truly moved by the beautiful work that was submitted.

Enjoy your holidays and see you all next term where one of our focuses will be completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Grandmas are...Grandmas are the best,They are better than all the rest,You might think they aren’t there,But know that they always care,Missing you all the time,They are really so kind,Their hugs and their kisses,Show how much they miss us,Counting on them,To be there for us,Spoiling us is their game,Nothing can be the same,Without them we’re nothing,They really are so loving,That’s why Grandmas are the best.By Brayden 7BGrandpaA male relative that is not your father,A retired fellow who would much rather,Sit at home and have you sit on his lap,Who is this chap?My Grandfather.By Tom 7G

Coles Sports for Schools is on again for 2012! In 2010 the Cabra community collected just over 14,000 vouchers, and in 2011 we collected over 28,000. This has enabled us to provide approximately 100 pieces of equipment to both Middle School and Senior School students. To participate, simply collect the vouchers provided at the checkout at Coles supermarkets, and have your child bring them in to school. There are several drop off points around the college, including the MS and SS Office, Book Room and Front Office. Ask your family and friends to start collecting for the Cabra community. Our tally is already over 500 vouchers! The more vouchers we collect, the more sports equipment we can provide for Cabra students to use at recess and lunchtimes.

Junior Boys BasketballA clean sweep in all three matches against Blackfriars on Saturday 16th June. Jnr A BoysThe A’s withstood a last quarter fight back to hold on by five points, 58-53. Rhys O’Brien (28 pts) and Jalen Croxton (12 pts) were the standout players.Jnr B BoysThe B’s proved too big, too strong and defensively a very tough unit to win easily 56-12. Alonzo Mercado sizzled with 12 pts, and Alex Marschall produced a season high 14 pts to lead our scorers.Jnr C BoysThe C’s, led by Ahmad Ahmad (7 pts) and William Shepherdson (8 pts) in his season best game won 29 to 18. Alex Hurley, Christian Vlahos, James Rech, James Scarfo and Alex Nalepa all chipped in to contribute to a great win. Mr Rob Jarrad.First XI Boys Soccer ReportCaptain: Tom Harvey, Vice-captain: Hugh Callow. The First XI have had a difficult start to the year. They have been put into what is predominantly the 'A group' of soccer schools. Our only wins so far have been against Nazareth (5-1) and Mercedes (3-0). Our

first game of the year was against Nazareth which we won comfortably 5-1. This was an excellent start to the session. Our second, third and fourth games against Pulteney, Scotch and Westminster were lost due to players not marking, leaving too much open space and losing control of our formation. In our fifth game against Mercedes, one of the top soccer schools at this level in the state, we surprised them by scoring an early goal. From this moment on the boys played with sheer determination and great skills. Our marking, movement and ball control was a magical thing to watch from the side-line winning 3-0. They prove to me and themselves that they have

the depth, talent and skills to outplay any team. Now at the half-way mark of the season, as a team we have decided to play our strongest team from this point on. With harder work at training these boys who have already been playing together for five years have the potential to outclass any team. The future looks good as all of these boys are in Year 11; 2013 will be their year to remember.I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching these boys so far and look forward to witnessing the improvement and growth as individual players and as a team.Nelson Lee, Coach

ST MARY’S UNIT ReSeARCH PRoJeCT

By: Cheryl webber, Flexible learning CoordinatorThe current Year 12 students in the St Mary’s Unit began their Research Project-Modified (RPM) in semester 2 2011. They have continued this subject this year and have almost completed all requirements for SACE moderation.DAVID DE HAAS chose to investigate the ARIA Awards and some of the worthy recipients. Recently he gave a detailed oral presentation, supported by Powerpoint, to an enthusiastic audience.LUKE EVANS extended his already-prodigious knowledge of Pixar Animation by creating his own cartoon characters and involving them in a Game Show format.GEORGINA HAMILTON further developed her love of performance by investigating the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and planning her ideal stage act. She will perform this next term in the St Dominic’s Day Talent Show. All three students amassed much research material including both Internet and hard

copies of sources of information. They conducted interviews and questionnaires, worked diligently on their final outcomes, and gave stellar performances to their invited guests. Their Learning Goals – to learn to research fairly independently and to present to an audience – were met successfully.David, Luke and Georgina would like to thank those teachers and support staff who assisted them directly – Ms Deborah Lubatti in 2011 and, this year, Ms Tha’is Bussenchutt, Mr Ben Heath and Mrs Cheryl Webber – and others, staff, parents and friends, who contributed in many ways to their progress.
