Congregation Agudath Israel (CAI) is defined by

rare and wonderful contrasts. It is large in stature

and sway, yet intimate in character and climate.

It offers modern and meditative worship alternatives,

while maintaining a core spiritual identity rooted in

Jewish tradition. It is on the cutting-edge of educational

trends, and deploys them to deliver the wisdom of

both yesterday and today. It meaningfully engages all

members, whether they express Jewish values in the

sanctuary, the classroom, or the soup kitchen.

COMMUNITY

The stars of Israeli TV sensation Shtisel appeared before more than 1,500 fans.

Comedy Night featured Emmy Award-winner Judy Gold and brought out over 350 audience members.

Super Bowl Shabbat engaged more than 200 sports fans.

Over 450 music lovers attended a concert on Yom Ha’atzmaut featuring Jewish a cappella by Six13.

Young Parents’ Night Out was enjoyed by120 moms and dads.

The CAI-GOA Reunion Dinner drew a crowd of 130 day school alumni and parents.

Simchas included 46 Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, as well as several baby namings, aufrufs, and weddings.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

A new Kindness Curriculum was integrated throughout the Education Department, connecting classroom lessons to Judaism’s many altruistic values.

ADULT EDUCATION

Rabbi Lucas offered CAI’s first-ever online courses: Leadership Lessons in the Bible and Do You Believe in Miracles?, increasing participation from working adults.

Courses were offered by Rabbi Silverstein, Rabbi Lucas, Susan Werk, Caldwell University Professor James Flynn, Nancy Caplan, Max Kleinman, and others, who engaged an average of 350 adult-learners on a weekly basis.

ECC

Rabbi Lucas led a workshop for parents called Difficult Conversations. The first session, Talking with Children about Death, drew more than 20 ECC parents.

A ceremony was held to dedicate a new wooden climbing structure in the indoor playground. Offering opportunities for imaginary play, motor-skill development, and social interaction, the structure is the latest illustration of the ECC’s commitment to learning through play.

Parents strengthened their connection to the classroom through Remini, a smartphone app that enables teachers to upload pictures and videos of school activities.

WELLNESS

A new Bereavement Group was led by CAI’s Zeller Family Social Worker. Monthly sessions empowered participants to overcome grief, commit to self-care, recognize depression and anxiety, and engage meaningfully in Jewish rituals surrounding loss.

Over 200 members received support from CAI’s Congregational Nurse and Zeller Family Social Worker, whose services connect Judaism to physical and emotional well-being.

MUSIC

Cantor Joel Caplan was honored for 36 years at CAI. An event celebrating his double-chai anniversary featured CAI’s current vocal groups and alumni of his choirs.

Neshama Singers and the Tov M’od Choir added harmony to Shabbat morning and Holy Day services throughout the year. The High Holy Day Choir participated in Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services.

Twenty-five members blew Shofar for Shut-Ins, visiting the elderly and ill at home and in the hospital.

CAI’s something-for-everyone identity is brought to

life through a portfolio of diverse experiences that

speak to individual interests, curiosities, and callings.

These programs, projects, events, and initiatives

are united by their shared reliance on philanthropy,

especially the Annual Fund, which has played an

important role in helping CAI thrive.

2018-19 ANNUAL FUND In 2018-19, gifts to the Annual Fund exceeded our goal by more than $25,000, growing CAI’s capacity to support its members, community, and expressions of Tikkun Olam. We proudly recognize the many generous donors whose support invigorated our mission last year.

FUNDRAISING LAY LEADERSHIPThe impact of philanthropy at CAI continues to be transformative, enabling new and greater opportunities for Jewish experiences that nourish us spiritually, academically, musically, and socially. Our community’s ethos of giving has been built and fostered by members of the lay leadership, whose efforts have inspired many to make the synagogue a philanthropic priority. For their dedication, energy, and excellence as ambassadors of CAI’s charitable opportunities, we proudly acknowledge them.

TWO-RABBI FOUNDERS SOCIETYPhilanthropic commitments made to the Two-Rabbi Founders Society enabled CAI to expand its clergy team while continuing to invest in the religious, educational, cultural, and social programs that have made it a flagship center for Jewish life.

These commitments made it possible to grow our programmatic infrastructure, fully empowering each member of our clergy team to teach, connect, inspire, and lead.

As we enter our second year as a two-rabbi congregation, we gratefully recognize the families whose generosity enabled CAI to launch a new and exciting leadership paradigm.

Rabbi Alan Silverstein Rabbi Ari Lucas

Seventy-four commitments.

Two million dollars.

One synagogue.

CAI’s financial future is on solid footing thanks to the generosity of our 74 Legacy Circle member units, each of whom has included the synagogue in their estate plans. Their commitments — consisting of life insurance policies, retirement plan assets, wills, trusts, annuities, and other after-life philanthropic vehicles — have climbed to an estimated future value of more than $2 million.

When realized, these gifts will fund CAI’s endowment, a pool of resources invested in growth and income-producing securities, which generate interest and dividends to supplement the synagogue’s budget.

In addition to growing the funds available for Jewish life, the endowment will also provide a consistent source of revenue that will reduce CAI’s susceptibility to economic fluctuations.

We proudly acknowledge the members of the CAI Legacy Circle for their commitment to preserving and enhancing the synagogue’s strength for generations to come.

CAI LEGACY CIRCLE

CAI warmly remembers Jim Weintraub z”l, whose Legacy commitment—made together with his wife, Sandy—was realized after his passing in 2018. Through their gift, Jim’s dedication to CAI will continue to inspire our community for generations to come.

Paula Saginaw addressed the congregation in April 2019 as the featured speaker at Legacy Shabbat. Together with her husband, David, she was among CAI’s first Legacy Circle members.
