include damage to local store-fronts, broken windows of cars, and theft or destruction of e-scooters.

"At Bird, we have zero toler-ance for vandalism and aggres-sively address it when it occurs incommunities where we are meet-ing peoples’ needs for sustainabletransportation options. Weencourage everyone in thesecommunities – whether they rideBird or not – to report vandalismdone to or with our vehicles as weare committed to acting swiftlyand effectively. If you see some-thing, report it to us [email protected]. Bird investigatesall reports of vandalism and takesappropriate measures, includingworking with law enforcement."

According to San Diego PoliceDepartment Lt. Shawn Takeuchi, other than Johnson’s incident, there have been no other vandal-ism reports filed regarding braketampering for Bird, Lime or Lyft.

“Recently there have beensome social media posts aboutindividuals cutting brake lines,”Takeuchi said. “First and fore-most, cutting brake lines is acrime. It’s either a misdemeanoror felony depending on theamount of damage that’s caused.

“There is a chance people arecutting brake lines because theyare unhappy with scooters intheir community,” Takeuchi said.

“That is not a way to send a mes-sage. It’s absolutely a crime.”

This wasn’t the first time John-son experienced scooter tamper-ing. Not only had she witnessedpeople cutting the brake lines onLime and Bird scooters, but shealso rode a different Bird scootermonths earlier that she realizedhad broken brakes. Luckily shehad plenty of time to let the scoot-er slow down on its own beforeending her ride.

“I’ve definitely seen people at theend of Newport Avenue tamper-ing with scooters and even Limebikes,” she said. “There’s all sorts ofevidence of this all across OB.”

At the time of this writing,Johnson said Bird had only paidfor the ride she had taken duringthe accident. She’s consideringhiring a personal injury attorneyand did file an incident reportwith police.

“With the brake cables, it’s onlythe older versions of these Birdsthat have them actually accessi-ble,” Johnson said. “Newer ver-sions don’t have the wires outthere. Like they’re trying to takecare of that, but they should prob-ably take the ones with the wiresoff the streets because it’s becom-ing a pretty apparent issue."

Takeuchi said the reason hebelieves brake tampering hasn’tbeen reported is because with acrime of vandalism there has tobe victim and a witness. SDPDencourages citizens who seebrake tampering or other scooter

vandalism going on to take pho-tos and videos and call the police.

“Most importantly, [citizens]can’t just call and move on withtheir lives,” he said. “They haveto remain there so an officer cantalk to them. Because legally, if amisdemeanor is not committed inthe officer’s presence, an officercan not make an arrest. It has tobe a citizen’s arrest."

Now, citizen’s arrest doesn’tmean residents are expected to“go out and put handcuffs” onthe person responsible. All itmeans is that they have to stay atthe scene and sign a piece ofpaper attesting to the fact thatthey saw the crime occur andthat they’re making the arrest.

“We need a citizen’s arrest bythe witness so we can take thesuspect into custody. In the eventthe suspect leaves, we definitelydon’t want the witness to followthem or put themselves in dan-ger. Instead we’ll take a report, document the crime, collect anyvideo, photographs or evidenceand do a follow-up investigation,”Takeuchi said.

While no scooter vandalismarrests have been made yet in SanDiego, Johnson has a few choicewords to the people who are cut-ting brake lines.

“You’re not doing anything toBird, you’re just trying to kill me,”she said. “Thank you for nothing.Thank you for making no differ-ence in this world. Thank you forbecoming a bigger problem."

Founder of Point Loma business remains jailed

Afederal judge hasordered the founder of anow-closed Point Loma

electronic business to remaindetained without bail in federalprison as he awaits trial on 21counts of mail and wire fraud.

The founder, Jonny Ngo, 33,raised more than $61 million from350 investors for the company. The business, NL Technology LLC,closed its Rosecrans Street shop in2018, and Ngo was indicted by afederal grand jury in April.

U.S. District Court Judge Magis-trate Barry Kurren described Ngoas posing an "economic danger tothe community" as a reason todeny bail, according to courtrecords. Curren also cited Ngo as apossible flight risk and he remainsin the Metropolitan CorrectionalCenter.

Ngo, of San Diego, was orderedlast month to next appear in courton Aug. 16 when a trial date willbe set. He has pleaded not guilty. He was the owner and presidentof NL Technology.

The business imported wholesaleelectronic and technology-relatedproducts for resale in the U.S. A law-suit filed against Ngo by the Securi-ties & Exchange Commission sayshe purchased bulk electronicsabroad for resale in the U.S.

The wire fraud charges involve

email communications for anorder to purchase smartphoneparts and screens and transfer offunds from investors who are con-sidered victims.

The SEC suit says Ngo andanother man converted investorfunds to pay for "extravagantlifestyles" such as luxury cars, watches, homes, and spendingother funds at casinos. To concealthe fraud, Ngo allegedly fabricatedbank statements and financialrecords.

"Investment fraud has a long-lasting and devastating effect onvictims in our community," saidU.S. Attorney Robert Brewer, Jr., ina statement.

"When these schemes arebrought to our attention, we willwork collaboratively with our lawenforcement partners to unravelthe fraud and hold those responsi-ble for profiting from it," saidBrewer.

"Mr. Ngo's alleged technologybusiness scheme was, in fact, aplan to deceive investors, luringthem into a false sense of securityabout their investments, falsifyingdocuments to cover the lies andstealing the funds for personaluse," said FBI special agent incharge, Suzanne Turner.

The SEC suit won a $4.5 millionjudgement against Ngo in Sept.,2018, by U.S. Judge M. JamesLorenz, according to records.

Ajudge said on July 29 hewill release the 1980s"Bolder Than Most"

rapist to the custody of a stateagency who will supervise him 24hours a day in a site that has notyet been determined.

The decision upset nearly every-one who attended the hearing forAlvin Ray Quarles, now 56, whosexually assaulted 12 women inPacific Beach, Mission Bay Park,Old Town, and elsewhere from1985-1988.

San Diego Superior Court JudgeDavid Gill closed most of the hear-ing last week to the public andpress, and only allowed peopleinside late Monday to hear his rul-ing. Quarles' attorney had request-ed the hearing be closed as some ofit involved a supplemental evalua-tion of how Quarles has beendoing at Coalinga State Hospital.

Quarles was present Mondayand said nothing in court. He wastransferred from Coalinga to theVista Detention Facility on July 18and remains there without bail.Gill said he might send Quarlesback to the Coalinga hospital if aplacement hearing is not sched-uled for some months off.

Quarles was sentenced in 1989to 50 years in prison, but the stateDepartment of Corrections deter-

mined he finished his term afterserving 25 years under the law atthe time. Quarles was then deter-mined to be a sexually violentpredator (SVP), and was sent to astate mental hospital for treat-ment.

"If I had my pick, I would puthim next to Judge Gill's house,"said County Supervisor DianneJacob, afterwards in a court hall-way to applause from dozens ofprotesters and two victims.

"I'm extremely disappointed inthe decision. Conditional releasemeans he's not safe to be released,"said Jacob. "He needs to stay lockedup. Put him out in the desertwhere there's no one around."

In Monday's ruling, Gill re-affirmed his earlier decision of Oct.12, 2018, to release Quarles toLiberty Healthcare, the agencythat contracts with the state ofCalifornia to provide security per-sonnel to be with Quarles at alltimes, at a house at Jacumba HotSprings.

The Jacumba placement fellthrough after it was learned thestate was not dealing with the cor-rect owner of the house and theplacement was rescinded a weeklater.

On Monday, Gill said the deci-sion was "a close call," but added"he can be effectively managed...ina monitored restrictive program."

While it is likely that

these documents are

that there have been no significant changes

events that may affect your Will and Trust

include the birth of a child or grandchild, death

of a family member that is named in your Will or Trust, changes in the health

Evans previously said in courtthat Freeman’s blood/alcohol levelwas .28, which is three times thelegal limit.

Freeman had been drinking inOcean Beach before the crash anddisregarded four warning signsthat she was entering the freewaythe wrong way, said Evans.

Evans said Freeman previouslyworked as a server at an EastCounty casino and she was taughta course about serving alcoholicdrinks.

Family owned and operatedColeman Moving Systemsof San Diego County has

spent the past 40 years relocatingpeople, businesses and their belong-ings from point A to point B.

Based at 3045 Rosecrans St. inPoint Loma, father-son team Stuand Matt Coleman admit little haschanged in the industry since Stustarted out in 1979.

“I came out here in 1978 with apsychology degree and tried every-thing, including real estate,” saidStu, who graduated from collegein Rhode Island. “I’d gotten mar-ried and had a wife and daughter. In the ’70s, everyone was buyingand selling houses. So I figured I’llget a rental truck, and if I need ahelper, I’ll find somebody out ofthe newspaper.”

Turns out, the guy in the news-paper want ads above Stu had arental truck. So they started outworking on that truck until Stubroke out on his own.

Coleman Moving has been haul-ing households and offices through-out mostly San Diego ever since. Thebusiness is licensed, insured andmovers used are all full-timeemployees with people skills.

That’s real important, notedMatt Coleman.

“If [movers are] nice and friend-ly and polite, things go a lot better,”said Matt. “Obviously, moving isstressful. You hear a lot of nastystories about movers being rougharound the edges or looking likethey just got out of prison. All ofour guys are really nice. Wealways get positive feedback onthem. They’re not easy to get.”

Coleman Moving’s servicesinclude: antique, apartment, fineart and commercial movingincluding extra-large items, cus-tom packaging, door-to-door ser-

vices, furniture delivery and setup, loading and unloading, officemoving, packing and unpacking,pick-up and delivery, residentialmoving, referrals and short-noticemoving.

Coleman sells packing materialsand their six trucks arrive loadedwith pads, dollies and freewardrobe boxes.

“It’s $105 an hour for two menwith a truck,” said Stu, of thehourly moving fee charge, adding,“What a lot of people do is just hireus for the heavy stuff. We’ll moveeverything, or nothing, it’s up tothem.”

Stu said they charge a flat ratefor large one-item moving, whichhis son, Matt, said can be chal-lenging.

“Pianos going up and downstairs, those are really scary situa-tions,” Matt confided. “You’ve gotto be real slow — and careful.”

“The worst jobs can be hoard-ers with lots of infestation of crea-tures, or nasty apartments withdogs and cats all over where

movers have to wear gloves,” saidStu.

“Strong backs, weak minds,” isColeman’s business model, jokedStu, who added finding goodmovers is increasingly difficult.“It’s kind of monotonous day afterday moving furniture,” he said.

“Some people take to it. Others, it’snot their style.”

But those who are willing towork hard, find furniture movingcan be profitable, if not fun.

“You do get good tips on thisjob,” said Stu. “Movers make outpretty well.”

“It (four-way stop) was startedby an effort by parents who wereconcerned about the safety at theadjacent park,” said Schlageter.“The sight lines can be pretty bad,and a lot of people drive quicklydown Ebers.”

Adjacent to the intersection isEberts Street Park, a highly uti-lized green space and playgroundfor toddlers and their families.

In January, Isaac Darby, vicepresident of OB NeighborhoodWatch, testified that large trucksare often parked on the streetcausing blind spots. He added theintersection is most dangerousduring the morning and eveningcommutes for both drivers andpedestrians.

Initially, Darby’s application tothe City for a four-way stop signwas denied because it didn’t meetrequirements. That caused him toseek out OBPB to get the group’srecommendation to put in a newall-way stop at Saratoga andEbers.

Ever since her appearance, mermaid in residence Verahas won over Obecian’s

hearts. Last year, a lifelike, blue-haired mannequin-turned-mer-maid named Marina once strad-dled 50-foot-high Ross Rock atSunset Cliffs. She was taken downand mysteriously disappeared inJune 2018.

Enter Marina’s “sister,” Vera, who has since replaced her andbecome the beach community’s defacto mascot.

“Vera the OB mermaid is posi-tive magic and energy in OceanBeach,” claims longtime ObecianClaudia Jack, who, along with her“crew,” including interior decora-tor Marna Cahn and muralistJanis Ambrosiani, is responsible forthe nautical nymph’s triumphantreturn.

“Vera is a happy piece of OB,another piece of history here,”noted Jack.

When Marina went missing,Jack refused to abandon the searchto replace her as some advised. “Idevised my story that Marina isstill out swimming, and that Verais her sister,” Jack said.

Born-again mermaid Verastarred in last year’s OB Christmasparade. She rode in a lifeguard boatsurrounded by her “court” of 20mermaidettes and their parents.

Vera has since been gracing OBstorefronts, switching localesevery month. “It’s an attention-getter,” noted Jack.

So far, Vera has been at a petstore and at the James Gang print-ers. She’s inhabited a seat at TheElectric Chair Salon and resided atSeams to Me.

Other “tour stops” for Vera areto include OB Surf & Skate (hercurrent location), Sunset Clipps,Pruett Realty and 2141 Salon inPoint Loma.

Jack said the reaction of people, especially young people, to Verahas been truly “amazing,” withmost everyone wanting to havetheir photos taken with her.

Recalling Vera’s creation, Jack

noted they started by sending awayfor a boxed store mannequin thathad to be shipped and reassembled.“They put her together, rearrangedher wig into a pony tail, and did herskin tone,” Jack said. “We didn’twant her to be voluptuous and sexy.We wanted her to be a mermaidthat 5-year-olds could stand next toand hug.”

Two local businesses who’vehad Vera say she was a pleasureto have around.

“Vera spent May at DetailsSalonSpa,” said Barbara Iacomet-ti. “Many days she was seen loung-ing in the lobby. She had a newhairstyle nearly every day. Oftentimes she would be sitting in astyling chair next to other salonguests while they were gettingtheir hair done. She was the talk ofthe salon among our guests andstaff alike. It was a sad day whenVera moved on, but we did enjoyour time with her.”

“My husband Shane and I ownShore Thing Pet Supply in OB andwe recently had the privilege ofhaving Vera hang out with us inour store for a month,” said ErikaBancroft. “She was a huge drawfor everyone in town who remem-bers the mermaid out on the rock.As a new business within the com-munity, we're so happy to be a partof the Mermaid's history.”

“Erika and Shane, the owners

of Shore Thing Pet Supply, asked ifwe had any interest of getting Verato come into our place for amonth. Of course we said ‘yes!’”said Jo Peregoy, co-owner of OceanBeach Business Center at 4876Santa Monica Ave.

“Why were we so excited? Well, yes she is just a mannequin that isdressed up as a mermaid. Howev-er, she is more than that. WhenMarina landed on Ross Rock lastyear, our three daughters wereexcited to hear of such a magicaloccurrence,” Peregoy said.“They’ve always wanted to see onein the ocean. Being able to bring atangible representation of some-thing our kids loved to our shopwas motivation enough.

“Having Vera sit by the frontdoor, she greeted all guests comingin to either utilize our services orthose heading over to the coffeeshop side. She was a great conver-sation starter for everyone,” Pere-goy said. “Strangers would starttalking to one another about herwhile waiting in line and that con-versation could grow into a long-lasting friendship. Children’s faceswould light up in wonder and thenhappiness when seeing her.

“What started out as an idea thatcould garner more interest in ourbusiness and walk-in traffic, turnedout to be so much more in the longrun. She is a treasure that allows forimagination to be real and that nomatter what, dreams can cometrue,” Peregoy said.

What’s next for Vera?Jack will concede only that the

mermaid will be in this year’sChristmas parade again. She hint-ed there’s a big secret about herthat will be revealed then.

Though ultimately, Jack haseven more ambitious plans forOB’s native mermaid.

“I would love to have a bronzemermaid next to the (bronze) life-guard at the OB Lifeguard Sta-tion,” she said. “That’s my long-term goal.”

Anyone with questions aboutVera may call Jack at 619-846-6269 or visit OB’s mermaid onFacebook.

Mary Maud Mitchell SadlerJuly 22, 2019 - April 30, 1919

Mary Maud Mitchell Sadler, age 100,died peacefully Monday morning, July 22,2019 at her home in Point Loma sur-rounded by family. She was the wife ofthe Rev. Canon C. Boone Sadler, Jr. whopreceded her in death; the daughter ofGeorge R. and Clara Mitchell, and the nieceof famed San Diego Plein-Aire painterAlfred R. Mitchell. She was born in St.Joseph’s hospital in San Diego, April 30,1919, a third generation San Diegan sinceher grandparents, on both sides, came toSan Diego at the turn of the 20th century. Her father’s parents attended St. Paul’sChurch, and her father sang in the boys’choir in the early 1900’s. Educated in public schools in Californiauntil she was ten, Mrs. Sadler transferredto the New Jersey system when her fami-ly moved to Princeton, New Jersey in Sep-tember 1929. The following year theymoved to Philadelphia where she finishedjunior and senior high school. She grad-uated from Oak Lane Country Day Schoolin June, 1937 and returned to California toattend Stanford University. While at Stan-ford she made her home base in San Diegowith her artist uncle, Alfred R. Mitchell.September 4, 1942 she married the Rev.C. Boone Sadler, Jr. and spent the rest of herlife supporting his ministry. In addition toteaching church school, and doing youthwork, she took charge of parish librariesand enjoyed hospitality and entertaining. They lived for eleven years in La Mesa. Fr.Sadler began his work there with two mis-sions, St. John’s Bostonia, and St. Andrews. In 1953 the Sadlers moved to La Crescen-ta where Fr. Sadler became Rector of St.Luke’s of the Mountains. After 42 years of

active ministry, they returned to San Diegoto enjoy retirement on Point Loma. Theywere married for 64 years. Also preceding her in death were her sons,Thomas Aidan Sadler (Chats) and Timo-thy Mitchell Sadler, (Aura Marleni) andher sister Josephine Mitchell Dearborn. She is survived by her three daughters,Rachel Anne Mueller (Richard) of Carmel,California; Genevieve James of Westmin-ster, Colorado; and Betsy Northam (Jack)of San Diego.A Requiem Eucharist in thanksgiving forthe life of Mary Maud will be held Satur-day, August 3, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at AllSouls’ Episcopal Church, 1475 CatalinaBoulevard, San Diego. Memorial gifts canbe made to All Souls’ Memorial Fund, orLUV, c/o Kathryn Bunch, LUV Treasurer,328 Maple Street, San Diego, CA 92103.

Ihave lived in Ocean Beachsince 1966. There have beenso many changes to the

community in those years. Somany that if I were to mentionthem many of our current resi-dents would have no idea what Iwas talking about. But one thinghas remained constant since 1997– Lighthouse Ice Cream & Yogurt.

I can’t tell you how many timesI have been here and how manydifferent items I have tried, but Ican tell you that I have alwayscome back for more.

Irene and I decided it was time torevisit Lighthouse. Of all myfriends and acquaintances, I thinkthat Irene enjoys ice cream morethan any other friend I have. When we walked in we both spot-ted our favorite ice cream and itturned out we like the same one,Dulce de Leche. We were going tohave trouble!

First, we looked at the “Today’sFlavors.” It is a list 28 flavors long. Then we were not sure what someof them were: Beachcomer, Birth-day Cake, Death by Chocolate, It’sa Goody, etc. You get the picture. And the 31 toppings, if youinclude the “sauces” and the sprin-kles.

But of course that isn’t all. TheirHot Waffle Ice Cream Sandwichmade them famous. They’ve sinceadded a Hot Pancake Ice CreamSandwich. They have non-dairyitems, soft serves, shakes andmalts, root beer floats, and sun-daes. It goes on, and on, and on.There is even a Doggie Ice in twoflavors for your dog (vanilla andpeanut butter).

For people that are on special

diets the non-dairy or sugar freeofferings are extensive. The yogurtis a vanilla non-fat (hard pack)and the soft serve is vanilla icecream or pineapple whip. It isserved with chocolate, caramel, green apple, cool lemon, tropicalorange, blue coconut, purplesgrade or red raspberry toppings.

What’s that you say? You don’twant any of the above? Well, howabout a piece of Julian pie, or abrownie Junior, or a banana splitor a flurry or… There was no waythat we could do justice to all theirofferings in one day. We havedecided to try it several times amonth and today we chose ourfavorites and will have somethingdifferent the next time.

Irene ordered a sundae withcaramel daze ice cream – vanillaice cream with chocolate bits andcaramel running through it. Iteased her because when she wasasked if she wanted a cherry ontop she said “no.” I asked her if shewas on a diet? (The nice thing is

that you can have your sundaeanyway you want it made.) Shehad butterscotch topping andalmonds on top.

I had a sundae with Dulce deLeche ice cream, caramel sauce, whipped cream, almonds and acherry. It was so good.

And here is another surprisingthing – the price was so very rea-sonable. Our sundaes gave us eachchange from $5. Do you know ofany other ice cream place aroundthat gives you back change likethat? That in itself is enoughincentive to keep going back formore.

Believe me – our next widowfunction is July 27 – and you willfind the entire group there then.I’m driving!

Lighthouse Ice Cream is a treatthat should be enjoyed daily

Seventeen year-old emergingstar Samantha Sibley, fromSan Clemente, overcame a

stacked field of top-ranked competi-tors to stand atop the Nissan SuperGirl Surf Pro podium in Oceansideon July 28, earning her first WorldQualifying Series title and becom-ing the youngest champion to wearthe Super Girl Pro cape.

Previous Super Girl Pro champ,Tatiana Weston-Webb (Brazil) fin-ished second, with last year’s run-ner-up Caroline Marks (Florida),and Bronte Macaulay (Australia)earning third.

The tournament saw top-ranked surfers such as Sage Erick-son, Malia Manuel and JohanneDefay eliminated on Saturday, andteenagers (Sibley, Marks, LeilaniMcGonagle, and Kirra Pinkerton)take four of the eight slots in theQuarterfinals on Sunday, withMarks and Sibley advancing to theSemifinals.

Another teenage surfer, BrookeYoung, who recently graduatedfrom Point Loma High, competedon Friday at the tournament forthe first time. She finished third inher heat and did not advance, butsavored the opportunity.

“For the last couple years I’vebeen waitlisted, but this year Imade the top 100 and actuallyqualified for the event based off ofmy results from last year’s QSevents that I surfed,” Young said.

“I was happy just to make the cutand surf in my first Super Girlevent.

“I decided to go big or go homein my heat and went for the biggermore critical turns, but the wavesweren't going my way unfortu-nately,” she said. “This event is fullof some of the best surfers fromaround the world, so every heat iscompetitive.”

Super Girl Pro is the largestfemale surf contest in the world, which focuses on women-poweredentertainment and inspiration, both in and out of the water.

“The event is known for it’sfemale empowerment, but it is alsoa big event worth a lot of points,”Young said. “However, all of thegirls are so relaxed and having fun,you would hardly know it’s so

important. Before the event, I wasfree-surfing in Oceanside and theentire lineup was girls. That neverhappens!”

Young plans to pursue a careerin surfing by competing in QSevents while taking college classesonline. “The events are around theworld so there’s going to be a lot oftravel, but I love it.”

For Sibley, the win skyrockets

her from No. 52 to No. 6 on theQS rankings, with a strong shot toland a spot on the ChampionshipTour (CT) next season.

"This is the best day of my life! Ican't believe I just won the SuperGirl Pro,” said an emotional Sib-ley. “I've been coming to this eventever since I was little, standing onthis beach, taking pictures with allmy heroes, and now to be theSuper Girl. I'm at a loss for words."

Weston-Webb wasn’t the onlyCT elite Sibley had to get past. Shealso served up a stunning win overfellow 17-year-old and 2018Rookie of the Year Marks in theSemifinals.

Sibley’s versatile approach withher vertical backhand and power-ful forehand attack helped her gar-ner some of the day’s highestscores along the way – includingthe event’s highest heat total of a15.76 (out of a possible 20) inRound 5 and a single wave scoreof 8.00 (out of a possible 10) inthe Final.

STU AND MATT COLEMAN

With just weeks beforetheir Aug. 23 opener, the Point Loma High

Pointers football team has alreadybeen preparing for months.

During a May-June period, coaches worked with returningplayers and continued installingoffensive and defensive plans whileevaluating the team's condition-ing and skills at each position.

Veteran head coach Mike Hast-ings knows what it takes to pro-duce a winning football team andhas been meeting with players todevelop leadership skills and otherqualities in his teen athletes.

Hastings assumed the reins in1998 after assisting legendaryprep coach Bennie Edens whenEdens experienced health issues. He counts 26 years as acoach/teacher and 22 at the helm.

The Pointers will remain in the

Western League, one of the CIF'stoughest along with county pow-ers Cathedral Catholic, Madisonand St. Augustine and a resurgentLincoln team.

Last year's varsity fell to 5-6overall, 1-3 in Western Leaguewhere the Pointers' only win wasover Lincoln by a 31-20 score. Then, with unfortunate CIF play-off scheduling, the Pointers werepaired with Lincoln in the first

round, the Hornets stinging theDogs this time by a 35-21 score.

Hastings doesn't shy away fromthe tough competition.

"The leagues are based onpower rankings and our goal thisyear is to compete well in thatleague to allow us to continue tobe in it," he said, noting the leagueis composed of the top five schoolsin the city.

Hastings has many returningplayers this year, now includingsome boys who have come upthrough the Junior Pointers pro-gram ranks.

Last season's quarterback pla-tooning system has ended.

"We've told both (seniors) JasonPeres and Trey Cobb there will becompetition and one will win thejob," Hastings said.

Using a spread offense mixed withthe traditionally strong Pointer run-ning game should give the team agood balance, Hastings noted.
