USA NORTHEAST PROVINCEOF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS CALENDAR 2015-2016
The USA Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus
Another Year Together…
Welcome to another year together with the Jesuits! Thanks to your prayers, support and generosity, Jesuits and their colleagues continue to serve in many corners of the world, meeting the needs of God’s people. As the months go by and you browse through the calendar, you will have an opportunity to learn more about the work of the Jesuits and the many lives they are affecting. The days and months ahead of us will be exciting, and challenging at the same time, as we continue to form, care for and help individuals. Be assured of our deep gratitude and continued prayers for you. We could not serve God’s people without your support.
About the USA Northeast ProvinceOn Dec. 3, 2014, the New England and New York Provinces united to form the USA Northeast Province. Fr. John Cecero, SJ, serves as provincial of our province, which spans from Maine to northern New Jersey, with a main office in New York City and a regional office in Weston, Mass. A glimpse of our province “by the numbers” shows many of the ways that our new province is flourishing in the northeastern U.S. and abroad. • The USA Northeast Province consists of 533 Jesuits, many of
whom serve in schools, parishes, international works and affiliated social ministries
• Our province spans 15 time zones and includes international works in Jamaica, Jordan and Micronesia
• 32 men in our province are in various stages of Jesuit formation• 15 Jesuit high schools and middle schools are educating more
than 9,600 students• 7 Jesuit colleges and universities are home to more than 47,000
students• Two vibrant health care communities serve more than 150 senior
and infirm Jesuits as they pray for the Church and Society We are grateful for your partnership as our province continues to thrive.
• Theology studies generally last three years at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University, located in Berkeley, Calif., or at the Gregorian University in Rome.
Care for Senior and Infirm JesuitsAfter decades of administering the sacraments and in service to the Church and the Society, many Jesuits will live their final days in a Jesuit community at one of our health care facilities.
Whether they are long-term residents or just recuperating for a while, Jesuits will find at Campion Health Center (Weston, Mass.) and Murray-Weigel Hall (Bronx, N.Y.) a level of medical, physical, emotional and spiritual care that is very professional. Through the generosity of benefactors, these facilities provide the care needed for health and comfort.
EducationSince the earliest days of the Society of Jesus nearly 500 years ago, Jesuits have been involved in the ministry of education. Today, over one million students are enrolled in some 900 Jesuit schools and universities the world over. As customs and cultures have changed through the years, Jesuits and their colleagues have remained com-mitted to the vision of St. Ignatius Loyola, imbuing their students with a desire to seek God in all things.
The principle of cura personalis (personal care for the individual) that each student experiences fosters the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical growth integral to leading a life of faith, scholarship and service.
Social MinistriesJesuit middle schools, high schools, colleges, parishes, retreat houses and volunteer organizations place service and justice at the core of
In honor of his hard work and 38 years of service, Br. Donald Murray, SJ, (center) was inducted into
Boston College High School’s 2014 Athletics Hall of Fame.
VocationsFr. Charles Frederico, SJ, the director of vocations for the Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces, along with the vocations team, continues to travel to parishes, schools, and institutions to help men in their journey of discernment.
FormationFormation of our men is and will continue to be a priority. To be prepared for ministry today, Jesuits receive ongoing spiritual direction and professional training, spanning from entry into the Society as a novice to first vows as a brother or scholastic, to priestly ordination and continuing throughout their lives. Here are some interesting facts:
• Formation generally lasts from 9 to 12 years, depending on the candidate’s educational background and prior training.
• The total cost to train and educate a Jesuit from the novitiate to final vows and graduate studies is over $450,000.
• Jesuit novices from the Maryland, and USA Northeast Provinces enter Saint Andrew Hall in Syracuse, N.Y., for the two-year novitiate program.
• After first vows, Jesuits continue in First Studies at Loyola University Chicago, Saint Louis University or Fordham University, studying philosophy and theology for two to three years.
• In regency, Jesuits work full-time for two or three years at a Jesuit work, such as an educational institution, or in pastoral ministry.
their institutional identity to develop a faith that does justice. Direct service to local communities, international immersion trips, advocating for housing to meet the needs of low income families and pressing for comprehensive immigration reform are all areas of concern.
Pastoral MinistriesJesuits can be found in hospital ministry, on call day and night to bring the healing presence of Jesus not only to those who are ill, but to the doctors, nurses and staff as well.
In prisons, Jesuits bring the love of Jesus to men and women who might find it difficult, because of their past, to let the Lord into their hearts and lives.
Parishes play an important part in the ministry of Jesuits. We staff traditional parishes in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. Other individually missioned Jesuits find themselves as campus ministers at colleges and universities throughout the area and working in parishes on a temporary or permanent basis.
International MinistriesHistorically, Jesuits have been known as missionaries around the world, and indeed this work is rooted in our foundations. Our most extensive missions have been in Ghana, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Micronesia, Nigeria and the Philippines.
Fr. George Coyne, SJ, and Dixon Tiwelfil, SJ, greet one another in Aug. 2014, when Dixon professed his
Jesuit vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
September 2015 In September 2015, Pope Francis will make his first historic visit to the United States, traveling to Washington, D.C., New York City and Philadelphia. Photo credit: The Photographic Service of “L’ Osservatore Romano”

December 2015On June 12, 2015, six Jesuit priests pronounced final vows, the last part of their formation, at the Fordham University Church in the Bronx. Three Jesuit novices led the procession and participated as altar servers during the Mass. It is in the novice stage where men can get a better sense of life in the Society by living in communities, praying together and serving at events like the final vows Mass.
