From the Principal This week: PBL Launch Education Week Parking and How You Can Help Class and staff changes PBL Launch The Positive Behaviour for Learning team have been hard at work behind the scenes gearing up for the introduction of PBL. The groundwork of developing our school-wide expectations is done, writing lessons to teach these expectations is nearing completion and temporary signage is ready to post on locations around school to make these expectations highly visible. Because here at KPS we sometimes use the Ready, Fire, Aim! philosophy to introduce new ideas (instead of Ready, Aim, Fire!), we are having a soft launch of PBL. What this means is; that we are going to prepare what we can, implement, test and trial these new ideas and amend/ change or improve them as we go instead of spending a long time trying to perfect it before introduction. Next week’s advertised Education Week open afternoon will be a little different as a result. We invite you to join us for a short student led assembly where we explore what PBL means and then to go to classrooms to join in an introductory PBL activity with your children. Mrs Wardlaw and a team of students have put together a great video presentation for your information and entertainment. PBL Launch The Positive Behaviour for Learning team have been hard at

work behind the scenes gearing up for the introduction of

The groundwork of developing our school-wide expectations is done, writing lessons to teach these expectations is

nearing completion and temporary signage is ready to post on locations around school to make these expectations

highly visible.

Because here at KPS we sometimes use the Ready, Fire, Aim! philosophy to introduce new ideas (instead of Ready, Aim, Fire!), we are having a soft launch of PBL. What this

means is; that we are going to prepare what we can, implement, test and trial these new ideas and amend/

Is parking a problem? Do you want something done about

it?

Are you prepared to get out of your car and come in to the office and sign the P & C’s petition to Gosford City Council to

take action to help us sort out our traffic jam?

There is a petition sitting on the front counter in the office that the P & C hope to record many signatures on to

present to our local council.

P & C will also be organising a school community meeting in September to discuss the issues and proposals for

improvement, so we need your signatures on the petition to encourage local organisations to see it as a priority for

Class and staff changes Thank you to the families involved in our restructure of some

infants classes at the beginning of this term. I appreciate the

fact that it was hard to do and tested our resilience, however, on the catastrophe scale it wasn’t so bad was it?

With your understanding and assistance and Mrs Groom’s

awesome organisation, the whole process went very smoothly.

Mrs Klatt and Mrs Roberts have returned from extended leave and thank Miss Abbie Stone for doing a great job on 2K and

Mrs Cheryl Samuel for managing the office superbly.

In addition I can advise that Ms Theresa Reinhard has taken extended leave prior to retirement and we all wish her the

best.

Although I was at a training course last week and missed it, I

am told by everyone that Mrs Heymans runs a great athletics carnival. Well done to all competitors too!

Hope you had a great week at our great school.

2M Goes Vivid

Athletics Carnival

Last Friday 18th July Kincumber Public School held their K-6 Athletics Carnival at Adcock Park.

It turned out to be a beautiful day, although very windy.

All students were on their absolute best behaviour and it

was great to see everyone getting in and having a go.

I would like to congratulate all students who will be going through to the next carnival and wish them all the best of

luck. These students will be notified very soon if they are going.

Thank you to all staff and prac teachers who made the

day run smoothly. Parents were also a great help and it was wonderful to see parents walking around watching

their child at each event.

Watch for the announcement of house winner and athletics champions in next week’s newsletter.

Mrs Kyle Heymans Sports Coordinator

2M has recently been investigating the Sydney Vivid

Festival and how light is able to transform the different locations of Sydney into a wonderland of ‘light art’

sculptures. After viewing the different designs of light projected onto the Sydney Opera House, students

created their own interpretations using oil pastels. All of the individual pieces created by the students of 2M not

only express vivid colour, but also the power of light to bring people together to celebrate. Out ‘Vivid Opera

Houses’ are on display in the school hall, please come and take a look.

WriteOn 2014 –

a competition for aspiring authors!

The WriteOn 2014 competition, for NSW students in Years 1 to 6, is designed to encourage students to

develop their writing skills. The competition is a great way to get students excited about writing.

Using a selected photograph for inspiration, students write a short piece of up to 500 words. Entries should

be a description, exposition, narrative or recount. The best entry from each stage will be submitted by the

school.

The competition will be judged by a panel of primary

school teachers with Gold, Silver and Bronze award win-ners chosen from each stage. Outstanding entries will be

published by BOSTES (Board of Studies Teaching and

Educational Standards NSW) - a fantastic opportunity for any young author. Gold award winners will also be

acknowledged at a special event.

PBL is Coming Positive behaviour for Learning (PBL) is coming! On Monday the 28th of July at 1:30pm we will be launching PBL at a special

school wide assembly to be run by our school leaders. Our school wide expectations to be ‘safe, respectful learners’ will

be introduced along with the viewing of a video that explains what PBL means to individual students. PBL is a school wide

system of support for defining and teaching positive student behaviours and we will be beginning our own PBL journey this

Monday. We would like to take this opportunity to invite any parents and care givers to this assembly who would like to be a part of this significant occasion.

PBL promotes positive student behaviour by building the

school’s leadership capacity and teachers’ knowledge, un-derstanding and skills in applying effective school-wide be-

haviour systems. PBL boosts student engagement in learning by increasing

attendance and retention and improving student behaviour. PBL helps schools to deliver highest quality learning pro-

grams to improve behavioural learning. PBL is a consistent, school, wide system of support that

helps define, teach and support appropriate student behaviours, creating a positive school environment.

PBL is designed to be responsive to the individual school’s current social and educational challenges and encourages

schools to reflect on their systems and practices to determine if they are having a positive impact on student learning.

PBL creates effective teaching/learning environments where students make positive behaviour choices that support ac-

ademic success PBL focuses on prevention of problem behaviours and in-

struction in appropriate behaviours

Positive Behaviour for Learning is a continuum

of evidence based practices that includes: school-wide discipline practices including establishing clear

consequences

instruction in social skills

helping students regulate their own behaviour

helping teachers intervene effectively to manage behaviour in the classroom and other school

environments

active supervision in all areas of the school

enabling the learning and support team and PBL team to plan and solve problems together

external coaching to build capacity and provide consistent, region-wide support for schools
