JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021
Due to the fluid environment we find ourselves in, our 4-H calendar is changing just as quickly. Please make sure to contact your local Extension Office or your
counties facebook page to see updated events, dates and times. Thank you
in advance for your patience and understanding.
4-H Scholarships
Attention graduating seniors! You may be interested in
applying for state 4-H scholarships. It’s simple to apply
for them as they all have the same application. Fill it out
once and you have applied for all scholarships. The
application is available from January 2 to April 1, 2021.
For more information on state scholarships, go to http://co4hfoundation.

In the cold of winter, we feel the need to keep animals warm and comfortable. Many youth livestock
projects are limited in number and instead of building an expensive insulated barn we need some simple
alternatives.
• First provide shelter from wind, rain and snow. Having a shelter that can block wind and keep animals dry is a great start.
• Provide good bedding. Bedding needs to be dry and clean to start with. Clean wheat or barley straw makes a great bedding. Put enough in the shelter that when animals lay down on it, they do not
smash it too flat.
• Putting animals together can help keep them warm. If they will not fight, they will probably snuggle together at night and share body heat while sleeping.
• Provide fresh water. Water is important for maintaining body temperature. If your animals’ water bucket freezes, have an extra one you can fill with fresh water while you thaw the other.
• Feed provides the energy for your animals to keep their internal heaters going. You may even give them a little extra (but not a lot extra) during extreme cold. Try feeding later at night too. This fills
their bellies and will help them make “metabolic heat” from digesting their food while they sleep.
• Heat lamps can also be used to provide extra warmth but be careful. Heat lamps have been known to injure and can also cause fires. Make sure they are installed safely.
Take care of your animals when it’s cold. If they stay warm, watered and fed, they will keep
growing into the great project you want them to be.
It's time to showcase your favorite project or hobby!! With a demonstration, you are describing to your
audience "HOW TO" do a particular skill or sharing what they have learned from their projects. In this
event, 4-H youth members demonstrate their topic individually or with another member as a team entry.
A successful demonstration will show the audience and judges several steps in a process, such as
preparing a cooked dish, grooming an animal, demonstrating how to take a good picture, etc.
Demonstrations are followed by a Q&A period with the judges where the contestant(s) provide answers,
and can cite further resources or expertise.
Participants learn and develop many excellent communication and life skills through this activity
and gain confidence to be prepared to speak in front of audiences. 4-H'ers can compete in this contest at
the Colorado State 4-H Conference held in Fort Collins in June. If you have prepared an amazing
demonstration and want to compete at State Conference, please call your Extension Office for
more details.
Hi! My name is Brooklyn Plumb and I am the District 1 President and the Colorado State Secretary. I am
from Phillips County and show pigs and cattle and exhibit leathercraft. I am also a part of my county’s
livestock judging team. 4-H is something that has helped me in school and other extracurricular events. I
strongly encourage every person to become as involved as you can. You will be able to meet new people,
develop your leadership, and gain skills that are necessary later in life.
Of course, with all of the things that are currently happening, this year is going to look a little
different. As an officer team, we are trying as hard as possible to make all of the conferences as close to
normal as possible. I am excited to see all of you as soon as it is safe to do so!

4-H Project Spotlight: Clothing Construction
Clothing Construction units are flexible and allow youth one or more years to explore
and master the techniques. Youth may exhibit more than one entry per year by simply
making a copy of the project record to go with the other exhibit! Each skill level offers
several choices of items to sew using the skills in that level.
Beginning Clothing STEAM 1 is for beginner sewers. You can start out with non-
clothing items like pillow covers and pillow cases. Then you can progress to sewing
clothing items: simple top, simple bottom (shorts, pants or skirts), or a simple dress.
Please use a firmly-woven, medium-weight cotton or at least 50-percent cotton-blend fabric; and garment must
be without set-in sleeves, zippers, collars, or button holes.
Beginning Clothing STEAM 2 is for sewers that are familiar with the basic techniques and
ready to learn more advanced skills. Use any woven or knit fabric appropriate to the
garment’s design. The exhibit garment MUST INCLUDE one or more of the following
techniques: set-in sleeves, zippers, collars, cuffs or button holes. Clothing exhibit items are:
top or vest, pants or shorts, skirt, dress, romper or jumpsuit, or two-piece outfit.
Sewing for Others (Unit 7) and Recycled Clothing (Unit 8) Both units are very flexible
in what you choose to sew and exhibit. In Sewing for Others, you sew a clothing items
for another person like a child, friend, parent or grandparent. In Recycled Clothing, you
take an existing clothing item(s) and you redesign it into a new garment for yourself.
Clothing STEAM 3 is for the advanced sewer who wants to learn more about advanced
sewing skills. Garments should demonstrate sewing skills beyond STEAM Clothing 2; for
example, rolled hems, hand-picked zippers, princess seams, flat felled or mock flat felled
seam finishes, invisible zippers, tailoring techniques (French or Hong Kong seam finishes,
non-woven interfacing, bound buttonholes, shoulder pads, sleeve heads, lining and or
underling, welt pockets, swing tacks, etc.). The exhibit classes are separated by the fabric used: Cotton or
Cotton Blend, Synthetics and Rayon, Wool and Wool Blends, Silk and Silk-Like, and Specialty Fabrics.

Due to COVID -19 Unfortunately, we have been using this phrase often in 2020 and will probably be using it again in 2021. It is not
only CSU Extension and the Colorado 4-H that have been making changes and cancellations to events, but the entire
world from our local schools to the summer Olympics. We know this is stressful, so please be aware these changes can
happen at any time.
One of the H’s in 4-H is for Health and this includes emotional and mental health. If you are struggling with the
stress of COVID-19 or for any reason and need to reach out and talk to someone, do not be afraid to call our office or
reach out to free services like 1-844-493-TALK (8255) or text TALK to 38255.
Be HOPEFUL As it makes us all groan when we hear “due to COVID-19”, be hopeful! Remember last year we were scared there
would not be 4-H meetings, shooting sports, ride nights or even a county fair? We were afraid we were going to be in
permanent lockdown, right? Well, things got better, and even though we are not back to “normal” we got to do things. 4-
H‘ers were able to participate in fairs, shooting sports, have 4-H meetings and get to see each other in person. Focus on
what we can do and not what we cannot.
Leadership Development Conference and YouthFest Leadership Development Conference and YouthFest are being planned to give 4-H members a great experience.
Although we do not foresee statewide in-person events, they may be regional or district in-person events. Please watch for
more information as the plans are finalized.
Citizenship Washington Focus Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a week-long 4-H citizenship program for youth ages 15-19 that takes
place at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. Every summer, thousands of young people participate in the program,
which provides opportunities for them to strengthen their communication, leadership, and citizenship skills, and
experience hands-on learning using the historical backdrop of Washington, DC. We hope CWF may be a possibility in
2021.
Kit Carson County 4-H Council offers two partial scholarships to pay a part of the total cost. Members wanting to
attend should fill out an application available at the Extension Office. The applications will be ranked to determine the
amount paid by the council. The remainder of the balance will be the responsibility of the delegate.
After CWF, members who attended will be asked to create a booth for the KCC Fair and give oral presentations at
a county council meeting and the 4-H achievement program.

Extension Office. Dates will be announced when plans are finalized.
Beef Weigh In Beef Weigh-in will be SATURDAY February 20th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Noon). Any market beef
cattle who may be showing at the KCC fair must weigh in during those times in order to be eligible to show at the fair.
CATTLE MUST BE BROKE TO LEAD ACROSS SCALES. This is due to safety concerns and wear and tear on the
scale equipment. Cattle that cannot be led across will not be weighed in.
There will be 156 days between weigh-in and fair. Minimum weight for all market beef at fair will be 1000
pounds and a maximum weight of 1500 pounds. No minimum rate of gain requirement for the livestock sale in 2021 but
there will be a Rate of Gain Contest. This weight will be used to determine the animals Rate of Gain.
Junior Superintendents 4-H members 12 years and up, who are interested in being Junior Superintendents for the 2021 KCC Fair need to
contact the Extension office and apply by February 1st. We ask that junior livestock superintendents not apply for a specie
they intend to show at the fair.
Spots still needing to be filled are: Beef – 2; Swine – 3; Horse – 3 (one for each show day, Th, F & S); 4-H Foods
& Cake Decorating – 2; 4-H Clothing/Fashion Revue – 1; Rabbits – 1; 4-H General Projects – 2; Open Class Garden – 1;
Photography – 1; Paintings – 1; General Living Arts – 2, Foods – 1.
Please call the office as soon as possible if you can help us out! 346-5571
Community Service Thank you all who participated in writing Christmas letters. It was a small gesture that made several community
members feel the Holiday Joy!
Spring Exhibit? A lot of kids participating in livestock projects have shows available in the Spring/Summer prior to fair. What do
you think of a Spring Exhibit for FCS projects? It is an opportunity to practice projects, also practice the interviews with
judges as well. We will be in touch with club leaders as well but if you are interested please speak up so we can make it
happen probably!

CPR Training Courses for 4-H Members and
Their Families
Come and learn a lifesaving skill with other 4-H
members on December 28th or 29th. The
American Heart Association will provide a two-
year certification to our 4-H youth and their
families through hands-on training. The training
will cost $10 for 4-H members and $23 for
adults or family youth members that are not
active 4-H members. The training on December
28th will be in Holyoke and in Haxtun on the
29th. Times will be announced when the dates
approach. Also, Deeona, the Family and
Consumer Science agent will be offering a
Babysitting Class that focuses on marketing and
safe entertainment for kids. The class will
follow the Holyoke CPR class and will last one
hour. The Babysitting Class is available for
youth 13-18 and will cost an additional $10.
Leadership Development Conference
LDC 2021 will not be happening in a face-to-
face event in Denver. The State 4-H Senate is
currently working on the alternatives and
planning for what will be happening so please
stay tuned for more information.
4-H Volunteers
If you are interested in becoming a 4-H
Volunteer, please reach out to the Extension
Office! We are currently seeking volunteers for
new and existing projects and would love to
find caring,
knowledgeable adults within our community to
mentor youth with their projects!
2021 Livestock Weigh-Ins
Tentatively, the beef weigh-in is scheduled for
the afternoon of Saturday, February 6th. More
information will be sent out regarding times and
more confirmed information after the next
livestock meeting. Other species will be
announced as the dates get closer.
Meat Quality Assurance Test
The 4-H Livestock Work Team is making
repairs to the trailer and supplies for the Meat
Quality Assurance Test this year. We hope to be
able to have it in person in the month of April
but will use a computerized format like last year
as a back-up. Members required to take the
exam included first year livestock participants,
second year livestock participants, livestock
participants turning 12 years old this year, and
livestock participants turning 15 years old this
year. Members will be sent a reminder about
taking the exam when the dates get closer.

4-H ENROLLMENT DEADLINE
Sedgwick County 4-H enrollment will close at midnight
on March 1st, however market beef project members
will be required to weigh their market steers/heifers in
on February 7th. If you need assistance, or need to use
a computer, call or stop into the office. Reminder: You
do not need to decide on all projects when enrolling.
May 1st, is the project add/drop deadline. The Extension
office recommends enrolling for all projects that you are
interested in, then dropping the others later.
PANCAKE SUPPER
The Pancake supper date has not been
set, however we are hopeful that it will
be possible sometime in March or
April.
MARKET BEEF WEIGH-IN
Market beef weigh-in will
be held at the Sedgwick
County Fairgrounds on
Sunday, February 7th
starting at 12:30 p.m.
Please be on time! You
will need the brand
inspection paper or official bill of sale at this time to
prove ownership. If you do not weigh-in, you are not
eligible to show at county fair. Remember, 4-H
members are not required to attend weigh-in if they have
prior commitments; however, your animal will need to
be weighed-in at this time. If someone else is weighing
your animals, we will need to know which animal
belongs to which child AT THE TIME OF WEIGH-IN
in order to accurately complete our paperwork. For
safety reasons, we encourage all market beef exhibitors
to start halter breaking your steer or heifer before weigh-
in. The weight range for county fair will be 1050-1500
lbs. for steers and 1000-1500 for heifers. If you are
interested in showing your animal at the Colorado State
Fair, please let the Extension office know by January
29th so we can make arrangements to get the equipment
to retinal scan your animal.
LITERATURE ORDERS
Project Manuals are crucial to successfully completing a
project. They can take into account different aspects you
may not have thought of when doing your project. There
have been a couple of changes this year, the Horse
manual has been updated, all horse members and
horseless horse project members will need new manuals.
Home Design and Décor manuals will replace the Home
Environment manuals. To help members get the most
from their projects, we are asking the club leaders to
collect the orders for 4-H project manuals from their
membership. Literature orders are due to the Extension
office no later than May 14th, 2021 to give some time
after the add/drop deadline. However I will be making
an early bird order on March 19th, 2021. The Extension
Office will order the literature and bill individual 4-H
clubs for all members’ purchases. Members will need to
reimburse their clubs for this expense. Rena will be
sending each club leader a report stating which members

will be information mailed to each member individually
about the MQA. You will need to re-certify when you
are 12 and again when you are 14. Market swine
members will now follow MQA rules, PQA (Pork
Quality Assurance) is no longer a separate program.
Please contact the Extension office if you have questions
about this. Livestock projects that require MQA training
include: beef, sheep, swine, goats, rabbits, and poultry.
If you haven’t met this requirement by June 15, 2020,
you will NOT be eligible to show at fair. Contact the
Extension Office with any questions.
ADD/DROP DATE
The add/drop date will be May 1st this year. This allows
you some extra time to decide on what projects you

Extension Office will be sending a copy of the interview
judging schedule to all members.
STRETESKY GRANT
Being is 4-H is an
awesome opportunity
and The Stretesky
Foundation has made
that easier for the
families of Sedgwick
County. The Stretesky
Foundation has once
again given Sedgwick
County 4-H a grant
that pays for local and
state members’ dues.
The grant is also used
to help alleviate some of the expenses on members going
to camps and conferences. Please remember to send
them a thank you for supporting Sedgwick County 4-H!
Their mailing address is: The William Stretesky
Foundation, 104 W. 1st St., Julesburg, CO 80737.

Remain HOPEFUL We all pledge our Head, Heart, Hands and Health to 4-H at each and every meeting that we attend. This year, we
would like to add another H for HOPE. We realize that 2020 has been a year full of challenges, but help us remain
hopeful that we will make 2021 better. Here is to a new year and new opportunities ahead!!
Colorado 4-H Leadership Development Conference (LDC) The Colorado 4-H State Officer team is working diligently to put on a Leadership Development Conference this
spring. The statewide event will not be held; however, we are planning for a district, in-person event after
January. Virtual options are also being explored. LDC is an event geared towards our senior 4-H members age
14 and over. If you are interested in joining this year’s conference, be sure to let us know so that we can keep
you informed as more details are provided.
YouthFest YouthFest is an annual leadership camp for members age 9-13. Although the traditional statewide event cannot
be held, we are working with the district and state 4-H officers to offer some sort of YouthFest experience
locally. This will likely be a one day, district event. Virtual options are also being explored. If you are
interested in learning more, contact the office today.
Market Beef Weigh In Market beef weigh-in is tentatively scheduled for SATURDAY, February 20 from 7:30 a.m.
– 9:00 a.m. at the Eastern Colorado Research Station north of Akron. All market steers and
market heifers MUST be weighed in on this date to be eligible to show at county fair - NO
EXCEPTIONS.

Carnival and Raffle Update The county 4-H council is holding off on planning our annual spring carnival and raffle at this time. It is
possible that the events may be held later in the year or in a slightly different format. Stay tuned for details!
County 4-H Council Updates The County Council met via Zoom on Monday, November 16. In unfinished business, Emmalee Gailus gave a
quick report on Colorado Leadership Camp (CLC). This year, the event was held locally in Yuma as a district
activity. The council approved paying half of her registration to attend. In new business, the council discussed enrollment and a quick demonstration of the new database was given. The
carnival and raffle were discussed and the council decided not to move forward with either this spring. Those
events may be considered later this year. Covid updates were given and the status of state and national events
was discussed. Looking ahead, the council bounced around a few ideas of programs or activities that may be
needed this spring. All agreed that record book workshops and a “how to” for virtual meetings would be great.
Spring events were discussed. A short training was held on the proper use of 4-H funds.
The next council meeting will be held January 18th at 7:00 p.m. At this time, the meeting is being planned
virtually. If county restrictions are moved back to orange, an in person meeting will be held at the annex (masks
required). A postcard reminder will be mailed to all of our club leaders and council representatives. Club leaders,
please let us know who your council representatives are so that we can get them on our list.
Community Service Ideas With changing times, some of our typical community service ideas have needed to be revamped or changed to fit
new safety guidelines or virtual experiences. Check out these ideas that might be new to your club:
Adopt an elderly neighbor – Check in on them by phone, they would love to hear from you! See
if there is yard work or a small outside project that you can do for them safely without in-person contact. Send them holiday cards, letters or artwork that you’ve drawn.
Organize a donation drive – Maybe you can collect food for the local pantry or toys for the angel
tree. Collect winter clothing or warm blankets for programs like the “Eric Project”. Have the
donation drive be set up so that people can just simply drop off items in a bin or container for
collection.
Send cards, letters, or crafts – Nursing home residents and elderly community members are all
missing contact these days. Send cards, letters, or handmade crafts or artwork. Do a special
recognition project and send cards or thank you notes to local veterans or first responders.
Recognize teachers or people that make a difference in your life by sending something special.
Project Ideas Still looking for new ideas for projects this year? You are welcome to add or drop projects
until May 1st. How about trying something new? Check out the project spotlight section
in the front of the newsletter for more information on clothing projects. Call us and ask
about projects like gardening, welding, beekeeping, ceramics, robotics or rocketry. For a
complete list of projects, contact our office today or look online at colorado4h.org.
WE ARE HERE FOR YOU! We understand that you are missing activities, dealing with changes, and tired of cancellations. Our Extension
staff, your 4-H friends, and your 4-H leaders are all here for you. Check in on each other, be a friend to all, and
reach out if you need to talk. Just need someone to listen? Contact the Colorado Crisis Line at 1-844-493-TALK
(8255) or text TALK to 38255. We care about you all and are looking forward to better times in 2021!
