SOUTHWEST OHIO PLEIN AIR PAINTERS The SOUTHWEST OHIO PLEIN AIR PAINTERS 2013 Schedule is available now on the CAC website.

Notes on the Origins of the Cincinnati Art Club

The Cincinnati Art Club has a long history, dating back to the nineteenth century. This is the second of a series from Club Historian, Dave Klocke.

Cincinnati as an art center during the 19th century

When studying the history of the Art Club of Cincinnati, it is useful to understand the status of Cincinnati in the 19th century. Cincinnati was then a prosperous and comparatively rich community. There was an unusually large portion of the population with education. The economic opportunities here drew wealthy investors from the East Coast to the city who became patrons of the arts as well as supporters of other civic causes.

Art schools and other art clubs existed here from the early 1800’s. During the latter half of the century the number of artists in the area grew significantly as numerous lithographing, publishing, and related decorative arts businesses developed here. The Queen City was the recognized art center of the West in those days.

Founding of the Club

Fine artists of the 19th century sought group discussion, critique, and sharing of techniques with other artists. One such circle of artists was a Cincinnati sketch group regularly meeting in Jon Rettig’s studio as early as 1885. From this group came the 13 founding members of a men’s art club meeting in Clarence Bartlett’s studio on March 15, 1890.

The members were John Rettig, president; James McLaughlin, vice president; Edward Butler, secretary-treasurer; Clarence Bartlett, Matt Daly, Albert Elzner, Edward Johnson, Remmington Lane, Leon VanLoo, Louis Lutz, William McCord, Percy Morris, and John Henry Sharp. In order to avoid the unlucky number of 13 members, they elected Bartlett’s dog as the 14th member and recorded that in the minutes.

The first printed roster of the membership is that of 1891-92 listing 32 active members and 36 associate members, indicating remarkable growth in the first year. Henry Farny was elected the second president and Leon VanLoo the third. In 1896 Frank Duveneck was elected the 4th president. Duveneck was already the most prestigious painter in the area and his commitment to the Club brought in many additional members.

Happy April, Happy Spring!

Yes, spring is upon us, snow and all!

Chuck Marshall gave a wonderful presentation and snow scene demonstration at last month’s dinner meeting. We were all captivated and spellbound by his every move of the brush. In the end, a wonderful landscape magically appeared. Many thanks, its great having you back home!

Wrapping up the last program of this season will be David Mueller. David will be giving a presentation on how he proceeds from starting a piece through its completion. We look forward to this unique opportunity to spend some time with David and to learn how he travels through his works and the many steps involved.

With that being said, and with this being the last program/presentation of the season, it doesn’t go without saying. . . . Thank you to Judith Affatato for coordinating this past year’s programs and for scheduling each program speaker, you did a great job. We all benefitted from your hard work and dedication, many thanks!

Recently this past March, George Capito blessed the club with his one man show. It was a wonderful exhibition, a huge success and it was a great honor to have George, his lovely wife Mary and his family on hand. The gallery walls were covered with over 90 beautiful works of art which were enjoyed by all, including George’s family and friends, George’s students, guests and club members, past and present.

As we look ahead, we have the Sketch Group Show, followed by the Signature Members Spring Show and finally the Critique Show. The 45th National ViewPoint Exhibition will be held later in August. All dates and times will be listed in the newsletter and on-line.
