GIRLS’ STATE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP Hi my name is Georgia. I made it into the North Coast PSSA Girls’ Hockey team that competed at the state championship in Murwillumbah last week. I played eight games. We came second in our pool and second in the whole tournament. I had lots of fun and made many new friends. This was a great experience and I hope to be selected next year.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL REMINDER The School Athletics Carnival for students in Years 3-6 and those children who are in Year 2 and turn 8 in 2015, will be held at Riverview Park, South Lismore on Thursday, 11 June with events starting at 10.00am. Children are to wear casual clothes in their house colours (appropriate footwear is compulsory). Parents are very welcome to come to our Athletics Carnival. Our theme is PARTICIPATION. Please encourage your children to participate in as many events as they can. JUNIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL The Junior Athletics Carnival will be held in our school grounds on Friday, 5 June. The carnival is for students from Kinder to Year 2 (only those Year 2 students who turn 7 this year). Year 2 students who turn 8 this year are not involved in this carnival. Races will be held from 11.30am - 1.00pm. Students will be involved in races and novelty events. Children may wear suitable casual clothing and footwear.

WRPS BOYS’ SOCCER Last week, the boys’ soccer team played their second round match against a combined Terania district team. Once again, the boys moved the ball around the park with ease, creating many opportunities. The final score was 8-0 to WRPS. We are now awaiting the results from the other side of the draw before they find out who they play in the next round of the PSSA Knockout. Well done boys!

KINDERGARTEN EXCURSION On Monday, 87 Kindergarten children excitedly boarded the buses destined for Rocky Creek Dam. This was our first excursion and was part of our current unit of work ‘Our Place’. We had been invited to a Forest Party at the dam, hosted by Christine and her team from the Dorroughby Environmental Education Centre and Rous Water. During the day the children were involved in many fun activities and learning experiences. We played environmental games and sang the ‘Aussie Outback Party’ song accompanied by our highly talented kinder percussionists. We took part in rainforest investigation activities using our senses. We followed the platypus trail over the dam wall, through the rainforest and along the boardwalks. Unfortunately, despite our long trek to find them, the platypuses had snuggled back into their burrows long before we arrived and were not to be seen. We had a fantastic day and learnt many interesting things about the natural environment in our local area.

LISMORE HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE

Over the past two weeks, Stage 3 students have been travelling to Lismore High School to participate in hands-on science workshops with Miss Hall. This opportunity allows the students to engage in lessons and curriculum linked to the new science syllabus, which is now being implemented across Australia. Following is what Ethan W had to say about the workshops;

On Thursday, 28 May, our class went to Lismore High School for a Science Discovery Day. It was really fun. Firstly, we went to the science room and did all kinds of stuff like making crystals and labelling different kinds of rocks. Then, we did an experiment where you have a glass of cold water and a little glass of hot water with red food colouring in it. You pump some of the red hot water in this tube and squeeze the hot water back out at the bottom of the cold water. It then starts to rise up to the top like a little nuclear bomb was dropped into the glass. When we had finished everything we had to do in the science room, we went out to get ready to go back to school. Abbie and Courtney (Lismore High students) walked us back to the bus stop. The trip back didn’t take that long at all because our school is just around the corner. by Ethan W

NEWSLETTER FEATURE Giving you an insight into L3:

The students in KD become ‘busy little bees’ when we are engaged in our L3 session every morning. To start the session we work together along with Miss Doolan to create an interactive writing piece about a topic of interest. We use our word wall and magnetic letters to create the sentence together. We then move around the many L3 activity stations

picking and choosing the activities we want to work on. We all know that we must complete our ‘must do’ activities before the recess bell as they are very important for our learning. Our ‘must do’ activities include; familiar reading, writing centre, ‘who, what, where’ sentence creator (pictured) and Crunch and Sip. Some of our ‘can do’ activities include; iPads, computers, Interactive Smart Board activities, sight word bingo, cut and paste and many more. During this session, we always engage in guided reading with Miss Doolan in our small groups of two or three.

WORLD OF MATHS When World of Maths visited our school on Monday, students were given a hands-on approach to a wide variety of maths activities. They were very enthusiastic about the experience and enjoyed completing the work. It gave many students a new way of looking at various concepts and proved to many that maths really can be fun!

WASTE AUDIT On Wednesday, 20 May the Environment Team was visited by Danielle from the Lismore Recycling Centre. She talked to us about rubbish, waste, recycling and land fill. We then participated in a school waste audit. We looked through all the school’s bins and analysed the items in them. In one waste bin which was half full, we found that about 50% of the bin contained food scraps; about 40% was recyclable items and ONLY four packets of chips which could not be recycled. From this, we hope to put some green and yellow bins in our eating areas. We also learnt that you can recycle plastic bags – these include zip lock bags, freezer and shopping bags. All you have to do is place them in a larger plastic bag such as a shopping bag and when this bag is full place it in your yellow bin. Old batteries, DVDs, CDs, sun glasses, mobile phones, x-rays and ink cartridges can also be recycled by placing them in a special bag, which you can now pick up from the front office. Once the bag is full, just seal it and place it in your yellow bin. RECYCLING Every year in Australia and New Zealand, over 30 million toothbrushes and 80 million toothpaste tubes are thrown away. Our school is participating in the Colgate Oral Care Brigade, a unique recycling solution in partnership with Terracycle. Simply collect your used and empty oral care waste (any brand is accepted), send it to school with your child and we’ll ship to Terracycle to be recycled. You can provide a second life for the following acceptable items and their outer packaging: toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, toothpaste caps and floss containers. For each approved item received, our school will be awarded points which can be redeemed for funds for the school. Colgate will award $1,000 in local currency to the registered school from which we receive the largest total shipment of oral care waste in each of Australia and New Zealand before 1 November, 2015. Thank you for your participation. To learn more go to: www.terracycle.com.au Students can place there recyclable items in a box in the foyer.

CRUNCH AND SIP MIX IT UP! Try to challenge your child to try a new fruit or vegetable. Make it easier by cutting it up and joining it with another fruit or vegetable and have them help you prepare it, eg. watermelon and strawberries or carrot and cucumber.

WRPS CHOOKS As you may be aware, we have some chooks that are cared for by some of our students. We need some more to add to our brood. Please contact the office if you are able to donate any to our school. They would be much appreciated and cared for.
