• Workers building a sawmill in the newly acquired territory of California, happened to find pieces of gold in the river bed.
• Rumors were spread that there was gold in the west, when rumors made it to the east coast most people headed for California.
• Some gold was then shipped to Washington where later the rumor was then known as a fact.
DECLARATION OF ADMISSION
• Settlers in California decided to create their own order in California.
• The settlers then later created a state constitution and demanded California admission as a state.
• Most of the forty-niners wanted slavery banned in their newly announced state.
• The reason for banned slavery is because rich people owning slaves would easily be able to excavate gold with their slaves.
ACCEPTANCE
• California was accepted as a state and was also allowed to ban slavery within the state.
• Henry Clay announced a comprise in which California must return slaves if they ever runaway to California.
• This new compromise did not only apply to California but to all free states.
