California
Baja California
Baja California is a desert.
![Page 3: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Baja California is part of Mexico.
![Page 4: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
The ocean is never far away, yet the land is very dry.
Pacific Ocean

California
Baja California
Southern California is also very dry.
![Page 6: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Southern California’s Mojave Desert
![Page 7: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Interstate 15 to Las Vegas—through the Mojave Desert
![Page 8: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
However, northern California is NOT desert.
Our San Joaquin Valley
![Page 9: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Can you see WHY our San Joaquin Valley is not a desert??
![Page 10: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Here’s why!
![Page 11: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Snowpack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains keeps our valley lush all year!
![Page 12: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
California was home to a large number of Native American Indian tribes
![Page 13: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Early settlers to California believed it to be PARADISE!
![Page 14: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
But…how will global warming affect our San Joaquin Valley?
![Page 15: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
To begin with, our Sierra Nevada Mountains will receive RAIN instead of SNOW.
![Page 16: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Why is this a problem? Isn’t rain GOOD??
![Page 17: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Rain flows down the mountains IMMEDIATELY, into the Delta, and out into the Pacific Ocean.
![Page 18: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
It’s much better to have gradual snowmelt. Then we can capture it in reservoirs and have a
year-round water supply.
![Page 19: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
As California grows, it’s increasingly difficult to supply enough water for its farms and people.
![Page 20: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
So we drill more and more wells.
![Page 21: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
As the water table falls, each year we must drill deeper and deeper.
![Page 22: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Before long, the wells go dry.
![Page 23: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Another consequence of global warming will be rising sea levels.
![Page 24: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Why will rising sea levels be a problem for us in Stockton?
![Page 25: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Weber Point, Stockton
Hint: Do you know the elevation above sea level of Stockton?
![Page 26: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Do you realize that parts of Stockton (e.g. Brookside) are already BELOW sea level?
![Page 27: California and Climate Change](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062322/56815103550346895dbf20a6/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Now please read “The Race to Save Civilization.”
What it describes is ALREADY HAPPENING here in California.
