“As family physicians, are e telling stories? And if e are,

hat stories are e telling? e should never be pusillanimous in our stories as healers, teachers, spouses, parents, neighbors, or friends. For if e are, ho can e ever hope to be able to connect ith our pa ents and have them be vested in a rela onship for decades? Speak up; speak out.”

“Leadership is crea ng posi ve change in people's lives. This is either done by example, or by becoming the voice for those society does not care to hear. As a family doctor, I take pridein being a living example of healthy living for my pa ents. As a result, I successfully climbed Mount Shasta (14,12 . eleva on in June of 2014 to support the Breast Cancer Fund.”

“I consider teaching the next genera on of family physicians my greatest capacity to a ect popula on and pa ent health for many years to come. If more family physicians ere a are of the state ide Medical Educa on Net ork ho po erful and meaningful it can be hen e gather ourselves together and focus on a shared vision and purpose o It

ould be a game changer ”

To celebrate residency Match Day, e honored t o fourth-year medical student leaders. They served as student co-directors on the CAFP Board of Directors and are founders of CAFP’s Building Bridges campaign, hich connects students, residents and physi-cians to encourage collabora on on pro ects and advocacy e orts.

“My advice to gradua ng residents transi oning to prac ce is to

rite out your short-term and long-term personal and professional goals. Try to pick a prac ce model that ts your personality and goals. Save your list of goals and periodically reassess to see if you (and your prac ce choice are on track to achieve your goals or if your goals have changed. ”

“I am energized by the possibility of helping to shape a be er Americanhealth care system based on thevalues and beliefs family doctors have prac ced for decades. e should help partner ith our legislators to help them appreciate hat needs to change in our health care system and hat does not.”

CAFP regularly highlights the inspiring stories of our members ith the Member of the Month series. e celebrate the passion that drives them to success and share ho they have put their vast kno ledge and enthusiasm to ork on behalf of their pa ents, students and community. Take a moment and meet our standout 2014 honorees ho are using their voices and experience to advance the specialty:

“To achieve ork-life balance, havean understanding life partner

ho is illing to step in for you hen you are torn bet een family and professional needs. Also try to nego ate me hen you seek employment. Time for personal and professional development is usually not grantedin standard contracts. Develop a net ork of like-minded colleagues ho ill provide support and mentorship to you.”

“The best career experience I’ve gained so far is ge ng to kno some of the family medicine community. It has been fantas c. I love my program and my co-residents. Residency is tough. No ques on about it, but speakingabout my class speci cally, I kno that no ma er hat happens, eight outstanding family physicians have my back through anything. I am just star ng the journey ith these people and I kno amazing things are in store for all of them.”

“The most important quality a family physician should have is openness to hearing hat a pa ent’s true perspec ve is, to learning, to handling challenges, and to the countless opportuni es a family physician has to make adi erence.”

“I got involved in smartphone mobileapp development hen I as anintern in my family medicine residency program. I realized ho much I didn't kno aboutso many di erent things andho poorly some of those topics ere taught in medical school. So, I decided to do it myselfand do the research and come up ith these evidence-based tools that ill allo primary care physicians on the frontlines to access up to date informa on to help ith clinical decision making at the point of care.”

“Ini ally, going do n the road of the medical home transforma on as very hard, but no e actually have di erent physicians and groups visi ng our prac ce on a monthly basis just to look at ho e run the prac ce. It is re arding to see our physicians be very happy to explain to physicians and groups hat they are doing. I think the biggest achievement is atching the hole prac ce transform and really embracing it going for ard. ”

“The biggest opportunity for the specialty is crea ng a model of team-based care that succeeds in balancing all the roles on the team to provide pa ents

ith a seamless experience. e have to ork together to

de ne hat it means hen e ask each member of the team to provide care at the top of his or her ability. I am hopeful that solving this puzzle also ill provide the solu on to physician burn-out and help us provide excep onal care to hole communi es.”
